DRIBBLES AND BITS FROM NCWOA
OPERATOR SPOTLIGHT
By Mark Hahn, Environmental Senior Specialist – DENR/PWSS
Throughout North Carolina, drinking water
treatment facility operators work hard to
produce safe and reliable drinking water.
The featured staff this quarter is from the
City of Newton Water Plant. The staff is
pictured left. From left to right: Rick
Sims, Glenn Bach, Tim Abernethy (ORC),
Eddie Copeland, Eric Wheeler, Charles
Wishon, Bob Brown, and Doug Carswell
(not pictured). The newest operator has 13
years of experience at the Newton Water
Plant, so they are a long-term crew.
The Newton Water treatment plant is a
conventional 8.0 MGD rated plant.
The average daily production is just less than 4 MGD. These operators work diligently everyday to provide
safe and reliable water to the City of Newton customers, and four other major purchase water systems:
Energy United Water Corporation, West Iredell Water Corporation, Town of Troutman, and the Town of
Taylorsville. All total, the systems serves “optimized” water to over 37,000 customers.
The City of Newton has consistently ranked among the very best in the State in regards to turbidity removal
and performance. The City has been recognized at the State and Federal level for meeting the Area Wide
Optimization Program (AWOP) goals for seven years in a row.
We wish to thank and congratulate the City of Newton for continually striving for optimized treatment, and
for being our featured water professionals! Keep up the great work Newton!
