Japan quake
sparks nuke
concerns
A strong earthquake shook
Japan’s northwest coast
yesterday, setting off a fire
at the world’s most powerful nuclear power plant and
causing a reactor to spill
radioactive water into the
sea, an accident not reported to the public for
hours.
The 6.8-magnitude temblor
killed at least eight people and
injured more than 900 as it toppled hundreds of wooden
homes and tore metre-wide fissures in the ground. Highways
and bridges buckled, leaving
officials struggling to get emergency supplies into the region.
Some 10,000 people fled to
evacuation centres as aftershocks rattled the area. Tens
of thousands of homes
were left without water
or power.
The quake triggered a
fire in an electrical transformer and also caused a
leak of radioactive water
at the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant,
the world’s largest in
terms of electricity output.
The leak was not announced until the evening, many hours after
the quake. That fed fresh

HUMAN ERROR
AT PEARSON
Security experts say reports of breaches at Canada’s busiest airport are
more likely the result of
human error rather than a
system-wide failure. A
news report yesterday
suggests security at Pearson International Airport in
Toronto has been compromised because
screening staff have been
told to hurry travellers
through checkpoints.

concerns about the safety of
Japan’s 55 nuclear reactors,
which supply 30 per cent of
the quake-prone country’s
electricity and have suffered a
long string of accidents and
cover-ups.
About 1,200 litres of water
apparently spilled from a tank
at one of the plant’s seven reactors and entered a pipe that
flushed it into the sea, said Jun
Oshima, an executive at Tokyo
Electric Power Co.
Officials said there was no
“significant change” in the seawater near the plant, which is
about 260 kilometres northwest of Tokyo. “The radioactivity is one-billionth of the
legal limit,” Oshima said of the
leaked water.

Rowland
collapses
Kelly Rowland collapsed onstage early Sunday in Lagos,
Nigeria, where she had been
performing, reports
People.com.
Dehydration was the cause,
her rep, Yvette Noel Schure,
said in a statement. Rowland
was taken to an undisclosed
Lagos hospital for a checkup
and was reported to be in “good
condition.”
The singer, recently released
her second solo album and
was in the West African nation
as part of the ThisDay Music
Festival.
Richards jets
off to Cambodia
Disgraced funnyman Michael
Richards has left on a spiritual
journey to Cambodia in an effort
to save his career, reports
imdb.com. The former Seinfeld
star hit the headlines last year
when a racist rant he delivered
during a stand-up show at a
comedy club in Hollywood was
caught on a camera phone and
distributed to the media. Richards made a public apology to
the audience members he offended, but has admitted the incident and repercussions have
taken a heavy toll on him.
Kylie Minogue has fuelled speculation she’s seeking a
reunion with her ex-boyfriend, Olivier Martinez, after the
couple were spotted dining in the French actor’s native
Paris, reports imdb.com.
The pair ended their four-year romance in February after Martinez was romantically linked to
Israeli model Sarai Givati. But now Australia’s
Sydney Daily Telegraph claims Minogue has
enjoyed at least two “romantic rendezvous”
with her ex in Paris in recent weeks. The
newspaper reports cancer survivor Minogue was visiting the French capital
for a routine hospital checkup, when
she was spotted “kissing and embracing Martinez outside a cafe” close to
where the 41-year-old actor has a
home. The rendezvous marks the first
time the ex-lovers have been in
Paris together since their muchpublicized split. A spokesman
for Minogue says that although
the couple is not back together,
“They do see each other.”

Lindsay Lohan has checked out of a Malibu
rehab centre after a stay of more than six weeks.
The “Mean Girls” star, who turned 21 on July 2,
left Promises Malibu Alcohol and Drug Rehab
Treatment Facility on Friday, according to a report on People magazine’s website Sunday.
She will voluntarily wear an alcohol-detecting
ankle bracelet as part of an intensive outpatient
program, said her publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnik,
in a statement.
On Saturday, Lohan was reportedly seen partying at Pure Nightclub in Las Vegas with several
friends.
“In part she is wearing the bracelet so there are
no questions about her sobriety if she chooses to
go dancing or dining in a place where alcohol is
served,” Zelnik said.
Lohan checked into the swank facility after a
wild Memorial Day weekend during which she
crashed her Mercedes Benz into a curb, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence
and was photographed slumped in the passenger
seat of a friend’s car.
Her outpatient program includes going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, taking daily tests and
receiving therapy.
“She’s doing great,” Zelnik said. “Lindsay is
working hard on her sobriety and we are all supporting her.”
It was the star’s second stint in rehab this year.
She said in January she had checked into a rehabilitation centre for substance abuse treatment.

the Edmonton Humane Society.
Animal protection officers
got 10 complaints of dogs left
in parked cars over the weekend, when temperatures broke
30 C.
When officers find animals
injured by an owner’s neglect,
they can lay charges, said
Diane Shannon, a spokesman
for the Edmonton Humane So-
ciety.
All the vehicles reported on
the weekend had left by the
time officers arrived, she
added.
But Shannon said the society
is getting fewer complaints
about dogs left in vehicles because the public is more aware
of the risk heat poses to animals.
Pet owners should keep
their animals in a cool basement or air conditioned house
if possible, she said. They
should also have lots of fresh
water to drink.

DJ Gillian Foote in the studio at 100.3 The Bear yesterday. She starts her day at 5:30 a.m. but
says she loves the work and her fellow jocks.
This lady’s a jock
At her small-town Nova
Scotia high school, Gillian
Foote’s guidance counsellor told her not to get her
hopes up about a career in
radio.
“I remember thinking how
cool it would be to be on the
radio but I never thought it
would work out,” said Foote,
28. “I used to listen to the Rock
Radio Network. I’d tape it and
call in — I was a nerd when it
came to that stuff.”
Not wanting to leave to
chance a spot in Nova Scotia
Community College’s prestigious Radio and Television Arts
program, Foote began volun-
teering at a local radio station.
Two days a week, Foote
would drive one hour from Tatamagouche to Truro, offering to
do anything — including garbage
detail — at Mix 100.9 Radio.
Foote’s persistence paid off.
She got into the two-year program and later, landed a job at
Country 101 in Halifax.
Then, three years ago, she

Since then Foote has been
co-host of The Paul Brown

A former crack addict who

Robert Pickton once explained how to kill women
and feed them to pigs began
testifying at the trial yesterday.
Andrew Bellwood, who
will likely be among the last

was 15 and moved up to
crack cocaine by his mid-20s.
Jurors have earlier heard a

Pickton once told him he

bled them and fed them to his
pigs.

Bellwood testified he got to

eventually spent some time
living on the property.
Bellwood recalled another

SOLDIER’S FUNERAL
Mother pleads to

The mother of a soldier recently killed in Afghanistan
beseeched Canadians on
the day of her son’s funeral
to support the country’s
troops in Afghanistan.
Shortly before an honour
guard piped the flag-draped coffin of Pte. Lane Watkins into an
open field, his mother Wanda
read a family statement that suggested people should be extremely proud of the military’s
efforts in a country that desperately needs Canada’s help.
“We don’t want any family to
experience the terrible pain of
losing their son or daughter, but
if Canada and NATO abandon
the Afghan people, the sacrifices
Lane, our family and others have
made will be for nothing,” Watkins said yesterday.
“They deserve your respect.
In supporting them, you’ll make
our loss much easier to bear.”
Watkins said her family was
much like many others before
her son joined the army two
years ago — they had had little
contact with the military and
their knowledge of Afghanistan
was limited.
“But you become a whole lot
more attentive when your child
is being deployed. We’ve come
to know many of Lane’s instructors and military friends and they
are the finest young men that
you will ever meet,” she said.
“Every Canadian should be
extremely proud of our soldiers.
They’re well-trained and we can
trust them.”
She also said her son was appalled by the poverty and plight
of the children in Kandahar.
Watkins died July 4 along
with five comrades when a
powerful roadside bomb exploded as they were returning
from a mission near Kandahar.

analysts.
Yesterday’s announcement
follows a public-private partnership arbiter’s draft decision on
service charges for Metronet,
which has been renewing nine
of the 12 subway lines in the
British capital in a project expected to cost 17 billion pounds
(C$36 billion) over 30 years.
Montreal-based Bombardier’s
decision didn’t surprise analysts.
Benoit Poirier of Montreal-based
Desjardins Securities said, “When
looking at the big picture, this
move is positive for Bombardier.”

Dear Wine Ladies:
We are major fans of your show and have to
tell you how much we enjoy it. We love your
resident chef, Darryl, and look forward to his
ideas and recipes.
We’re planning on making his gourmet crab
pizza as an appetizer for a dinner party and
would like a few suggestions for a red wine. It’s
funny, but most of our friends drink red wine
now instead of white. Why is that, we wonder?
- Theresa and John
Dear Theresa and John:
Thanks for your kind words and we’ll be sure
to pass them on to Chef Darryl. True enough,
the statistics definitely show that more and more
people are drinking red. A fateful day in November 1991 was the start of this trend. The
show “60 Minutes” did a story revealing how despite the French consuming a diet much higher
in fat than here in North America, the incidence
of coronary heart disease was much less prevalent and, according to the documentary, this
was largely attributed to the consumption of
red wine. After this broadcast sales of red wine
soared 44 per cent within the following four
weeks.
Chef Darryl’s recipe for the crab meat pizza
will easily accommodate your guests’ love of
red wine. The sundried tomatoes, roasted peppers and variety of cheeses are not timid flavours. A lighter red wine would be fine, staying
away from heavy, tannic, very full-bodied reds.
A Cotes du Rhone, a Cru Beaujolais, Dolcetto
from Italy or a Rioja Crianza from Spain would
all be great choices and, if you’re in the mood for
something a little different, there are some great
fruity and peppery Malbecs out there from Argentina. Just a quick mention, the wine consultants at the Vintages stores are always happy to
oblige, having tasted many of the latest offerings,
they are great sources to tap into for further
ideas and suggestions.

You need some fresh connections
Q
A
Dear Miki: I have been in
a long-distance relationship for the past seven months
and I am finding it very difficult. I have dated this person
for approximately 2 1/2 years
now and have been offered to
come live together.
I live with family members
and have three part-time jobs
which I have worked too hard
to obtain. However, I am 50
years old and beginning to find
it increasingly difficult to keep
up.
I don’t want to move in with
this person for convenience —
I need my independence. I love
this person and I feel loved in
return. Do you see that I will
ever make the choice to move?

Dear D: You should stop
hesitating and start packing
your bags. You seem to have
no doubts in your mind about
the fact that you love this person, so you would not be going
to live together just for the sake
of convenience.
I see things a little different
— I sense that you are just
afraid to make such a big
change. If you don’t take this
opportunity soon, you will lose
it in the near future.

PSYCHIC ADVICE
Q
Dear Miki: I am 38 and
I’m single and never been
married, but I have been in serious relationships along the way.
My last long-term relationship
was over 2 1/2 years ago. Since
then, I’ve dated with nothing
lasting longer than two months.
My question is the age-old relationship one: Will I meet that
special someone soon?
I’ve been told that, that which
I’ve wanted and desired the
most — marriage and family —
has eluded me the most.
I am a professional with
stable finances, a home, a dog, a
car, good friends and I am considered attractive.
It is getting frustrating for me
at this point in my life to not
have someone to share it with.

CREDIT A LITTLE
Dear H: You need to stop
looking for what you lost
when your last relationship
ended. I don’t sense that you are
fully aware that you are subconsciously looking for the same
feelings you had with your ex
in another person, and when it
doesn’t click the same way, you
walk away.
You are not lacking in the
looks department, so attracting
someone won’t be that difficult.
Change your routines a bit as
well, for you have the same people and same places around you,
and you need some fresh connections. Your chance for happiness and family will not elude
you much longer — don’t buy
into that negative energy.

The Kids are still alright ... just older
The Kids in the Hall are not kids
anymore.
Try middle-aged men, says the comedy troupe’s co-founder Dave Foley,
his soft features now framed by grey
hair.
It’s been more than 12 years since
the groundbreaking quintet redefined
comedy with their off-beat sketch
show, but their trademark dark streak
is still there, he says.
Writing sessions to drum up all-new
material for an upcoming stage show
proved that heartily, says Foley, noting
that the brainstorming stints were very
similar to the group’s creative patterns
in those early days.
“There’s usually one point where
we sit back and look at the material
and go, ‘Wow, is this show way too
dark?’ ‘Or is it way too dirty?’” Foley
says by phone during a recent stop in
Toronto.
“Which is the question we’ve
been asking each other for 25
years. And then we go, ‘Oh, well,
that’s what we wrote.’”
Homosexuals, serial killers, the
clinically insane — there were
few topics that were off-limits
to Foley and his crew during
an acclaimed run in the early
’90s that earned them a cult-like following in Canada and the United
States.
Their string of
off-kilter characters included
Bruce McCul-
loch’s misogynist Cabbage Head, Mark
McKinney’s sex-crazed Chicken Lady,
Kevin McDonald’s unreliable
Dean (The King of
Empty Promises),
Scott
Thompson’s outrageous gay socialite
Buddy Cole, and Foley’s affable axe
murderer.
This week, the troupe brings a slate
of all-new material to the Just For
Laughs Festival in Montreal.
But there are few old favourites returning, save for Buddy
Cole, and perhaps some “headcrushing,” says Foley, referring
to McKinney’s bitter Mr. Tyzik, a
nasal-voiced man who pretends
to crush people’s heads with his
fingers.
“We decided it would be more
fun to get up and do brand
new material,” Foley says.
“Part of it was just to see as a
group, what kind of stuff we
would write together, as
middle-aged men.”
Although reluctant to disclose what’s in the show,
Foley reveals the boys did
find at least one topic still
taboo.
“We had one piece we
were going to do — a thing
called, ‘Happy 25th Anniversary AIDS,’” Foley states matter-of-factly.

Washington gets a second chance Natural or surgery? Star Jones Reynolds
reveals weight loss story in Glamour
Isaiah Washington, bouncing
back from his “Grey’s Anatomy” firing with a role on a new
NBC drama and prospects for
his own network series, said
yesterday he’s grateful for an
unexpected second chance.
“I’m humbled by this opportunity,” Washington told The
Associated Press, shortly before
NBC announced he would be
joining its new series “Bionic
Woman” for a five-episode arc.
Washington and NBC Universal Studios also are developing
an action series.
He said his dismissal from
ABC’s hit medical show after
his repeated use of an anti-gay
slur was “an unfortunate misunderstanding for everyone”
that he was eager to move past.
“What I always wanted to
put at the forefront is my creativity, that thing I want to do,
which is act,” Washington said.
He was brought to NBC by
Ben Silverman, the recently appointed co-chairman of NBC
Entertainment and Universal
Media Studios. It was a comment to a mutual friend that led
to a meeting with Silverman just
after Washington lost his ABC
job, he said.
Silverman,
recalling their
June 7 get-together, said
he was surprised
to
learn Washington had
just been Washington
fired.
“‘Gosh, it would be great to
get him, get a great actor on
our air,” Silverman recalled
thinking. “It’s like A-Rod leaving
the Yankees in mid-season.”

Ever since her dramatic

Now Reynolds says she’s

speculation about her

“I wrote an article because I

last 10 years on the air,” Reynolds, 45, said recently while
promoting her new Court TV

Her article, “Getting Over

for Glamour said yesterday.
Reynolds, who has said she
lost more than 100 pounds
through diet and exercise, said
she has no qualms about viewing photos of when she was
very heavy.
“I actually like seeing the old
pictures because what it says
to me is, ‘You never allow
yourself to get there again,’”
she told reporters, according
to AP Radio News. “It was dangerous to me. Very dangerous.
I was killing myself.”
Reynolds, who married

decided to use her maiden

Court TV has said Reynolds’

Second tier waits for contracts
BRITISH OPEN
The second wave is ready
and waiting.
After a flurry of activity in
the first two weeks of NHL free
agency, where the bigger
names all found new homes
with rich, long-term contracts,
a number of unrestricted free
agents are now hoping to get
their names on deals.
“All things being equal, it
would probably be nice to
have a contract at this point
but I think you have to understand where you stand and
what teams are doing,” freeagent winger Mike Johnson
told The Canadian Press on
Monday.
“You just have to be patient
and wait for the right team and

Woods
From rain to shine, Open
promises to be wild week
It was wicked one minute,
wonderful the next.
The rain and wind were so
strong yesterday morning at Carnoustie that Tiger Woods and
Rod Pampling didn’t even bother
with umbrellas, and Woods took
off his glove when he lost feeling
in his ring finger. By the afternoon, Henrik Stenson sat on the
side of the practice range trying
to decide which sunglasses to
wear.
“It can turn in a hurry,” Chad
Campbell said. “We saw it
today.”
Sweaters gave way to short
sleeves.
Coffee sales slowed as fans
lined up at the ice cream stand.
The weather is often the best
defence in links golf, and it’s
what makes the British Open so
unique. Along with being brutal, it can change without notice.
But it has been on somewhat
of a holiday since Woods’ bid
for the calendar Grand Slam in
2002 ended in a blast of arctic
wind and stinging rain at Muirfield that sent him to an 81, still
his highest score as a professional.
Sure, there has been the occasional rain and a wee breeze,
but nothing nasty.
Charles Howell III didn’t play
his first British Open until 2003
and has never really experienced
a miserable day on the links.
Monday was the first full day of
practice for many players, and
Joltin’ Joe’s diaries for sale
The diary entry is obscure: Befitting the famously guarded personality of Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio, it
bears only tantalizing hints about
his life as a baseball hero and
husband of Marilyn Monroe.
April 28, 1989: “Up at 5 a.m. ...
Book people felt me out with
questions pertaining to baseball.
Some part of my private life but
not too strong on that. Will not
reveal anything in a negative
way towards Marilyn — only
books that have come out on
her might have not been truthful.”
It takes a good friend — for
instance, Hall of Famer Whitey
Ford — to help flesh out the
man behind the words.
The entry is part of a 2,000-
JULY 17 2007
page, 29-volume collection of
the New York Yankees icon’s
diaries, meticulously handwritten between 1982 and 1993,
which are now being offered for
sale. The pages, in plastic protective sheets, are contained in
thick, black loose-leaf binders
that were kept stacked in the
closet of DiMaggio’s lawyer.
Other diary entries are also
clipped and businesslike. DiMaggio was known for keeping
his emotions to himself.
“I really liked Joe. I know he
was shy. But I got to know him
better after we got out of baseball,” said Ford, who was on
hand yesterday for the launch of
the online auction.

the right situation.”
The signings will come in
dribs and drabs over the rest of
the summer.
Johnson is among a group
of unrestricted free-agent for-
wards that also still includes
Michael Peca, Eric Lindros,
Alexei Yashin, Jason Allison,
Anson Carter, Tony Amonte,
Jeff Friesen, Josef Vasicek,
Denis Arkhipov, Peter Bondra,
Patrik Stefan, Petr Nedved,
Martin Gelinas, Arron Asham,
Chris Simon, Nils Ekman, Ronald Petrovicky, Ville Nieminen, Travis Green, Jeff O’Neill,
Jan Bulis, Adam Hall and Dimitri Afanasenkov, among others.
And don’t forget about veteran free-agent stars Peter Forsberg and Teemu Selanne, who
have yet to decide whether or
not they’ll play again next season.

Canucks shoot, strike Gold
Canada took its third and
fourth gold medals of the Pan
American Games in Rio de Janeiro yesterday.
Avianna Chao, a shooter from
Toronto finished first in the 10metre air pistol competition with
a score of 468.9.
Luisa Maida of El Salvador
was second with 467.9 points
while Kirenia Bello Trujillo of
Cuba took the bronze with
467.5.
“This is so very exciting — my
heart was jumping out of my
body,” said Chao. “I tried to stay
calm with some deep breathing
and just tried to shoot the best
that I could.”
Meanwhile, Karine Sergerie,
from Ste-Catherine, Que., captured tae kwon do gold in the
67-kilogram class.
- The Canadian Press
presented with the opportunity,
Howell didn’t want to miss it.
“I didn’t play that year at Muirfield, and I don’t know how it
compared,” Howell said. “I just
wanted to play it and see.
“And it was really rough. It
was very rough.”
He played Carnoustie on Sunday and hit a four-iron to the
fourth fairway and a seven-iron
to the green. One day later,
hands stuffed in his pockets,
Howell hit a driver and threeiron to reach the green at the
412-yard hole.
No telling how Mother Nature
will behave when the British
Open begins Thursday, or the
rest of the week.

ROCKY BUTLER SIGNS
WITH ARGOS
The Toronto Argonauts
signed quarterback Rocky
Butler to the practice roster
yesterday.
The Argos were in the
market for a quarterback
after starter Michael Bishop
suffered a broken wrist in
the club’s 48-15 win Thursday night over the Calgary
Stampeders.
With the injury, former
NFLer Mike McMahon is
expected to get the start
Saturday when Toronto returns to Alberta to face the
Stamps.
Veteran Damon Allen
would become the backup.

HOROSCOPE
IF JULY 17 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY:
Ignore a few enticing temptations that
might waste your time or entangle
your heart.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): If you
start a study or begin exploring business possibilities, the momentum will
gather like when coasting downhill.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Remember that actions speak louder than
words. Make your mark by being an
entertaining communicator.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Discover hidden talents. You never know
just what you are capable of doing
until you try. Experiment with new
ways.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Earn
rave reviews. Start any matter that
needs to receive widespread publicity
or personal kudos.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Sail with
the current, not against it. The latest
news, the most recent fads and most
innovative methods may attract you.
You may prefer peace and quiet.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It’s not
what you know, but who you know
for
that counts. Form alliances with people and a little of their fame and fortune could rub off on you.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Put
some spit and polish on your public
image. Your resourcefulness and flair
at work can bring you recognition.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): The
people you meet now might not stay
in your life long, but could still offer
powerful insights, open your eyes or
alter your viewpoint.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):
Others may challenge you to think
things through. Rather than acting on
every enthusiasm, think objectively.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19):
Bask in someone else’s glow — some
of their star quality could rub off on
you. Go along with the crowd.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Do
well what you do best. If you do what
makes you happy, you will excel.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You
will be happiest when mingling with
like-minded people who share the
same beliefs or promote causes.
