Northern Ohio PCA is here to provide you with an excellent form of entertainment and- activities related to Porsches. By now many of us may be making a list of our winter projects and have winterized our Porsches and put them in the garage for the winter. Of course, we’re always hoping for the rare, warm, dry winter day to sneak in a brief drive. To satisfy our craving for auto races and other car related topics, we need to look for recorded videos like, [you tube Porsche]. Currently, the NOR Chairs are busy planning activities to fill the 2012 calendar and we are open to any new twist to old events or new suggestions. It’s almost time for Thanksgiving which is the most travelled holiday of the year. This means it’s time for families and friends to join together and celebrate all we are given to enjoy. I love the tradition of turkey, stuffing, and all of the fixings. Going forward.… November is the time for the Northern Ohio Region Annual Meeting and this year, Election of Officers for 2012-2013. The slate of officers is listed inside this newsletter The October Voices contained a brief bio and picture of each candidate. Each person brings a different perspective to the board. All are enthusiastic about the Club and about continuing the growth in 2 activities and attendance, and meeting the needs of our membership. So please come to the Annual Meeting on Nov. 12 at 7 PM to meet the candidates and cast your vote. The meeting is at Stoddard Parts new location at 190 Alpha Drive, Highland Heights, Ohio [driveway 21]. Come out to play and enjoy the food and the adult beverages. See the details inside. In December the Northern Ohio region will celebrate the holidays in style at the Marriott at Harvard and I-271 in Warrensville Hts. Come early and join the fun. Please bring an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots. See details inside. Please remember to thank all board members and chair persons for their hard work over the last 2 years. Son Steven and I went last year in our BMW and had a good time. Porsche was the featured marque this year and this would be a good excuse to get the air conditioning recharged and go for a road trip. unit. Getting the alternator out of the housing it’s been living in for the past three decades is another matter. The trick is to do it and not mangle the thin magnesium fan or housing in the process. Many thanks to my friend Dave over at PaintWorks for his expertise here. Sometimes I wonder how the people with 356s do it. Their cars are 46 years old or more and they get in them and go for a 225 mile road trip as if they were driving Corollas! Don’t they worry something might break? My car is only 38 years old and I often worry about things going south. Well, I figured another road trip would be fun. I spent a Saturday and adjusted the valves, changed the oil, filter, gaskets, fan belt, and spark plugs. The car was ready except for the air conditioning recharge. I made an appointment with my favorite shop that still has a supply of R12 refrigerant. On the way to work I figured I’d try the air conditioning. I noticed the red alternator light was on, and here I am motoring along on the Turnpike at 70 mph. No weird noises, no cooked oil smell, no histrionics from the gauges. The belt was brand new and sure appeared to be installed correctly. I got off at the next exit two miles down the road and found a spot to pull over. I opened the lid and everything looks fine except the red light was still on. I drove the rest of the way to work in Prius mode. I figured my 38 year old alternator needed some attention. Checked the batteries – 12.9 Volts. I’ll drive from work to the shop on battery power – about 40 miles. The car started up and I drove there without issue. Now if you’ve ever removed the alternator from a 911 it’s a pretty easy task to remove the alternator, housing, and fan as a single 10 The Stubborn Alternator The next day my daughter took the alternator over to Certified Auto Electric in Bedford and her Miata to the shop for some freon. The car is only twenty years old and the AC probably hasn’t been charged in five years. After a recharge it worked great! Air from the vents is around 40°F. Darned Japanese cars! A couple days later I picked up the alternator, took it home, cleaned up the fan and shroud, and put everything back together. I charged up the batteries over night and the car started instantly the next morning. No more red light. Ahhh. I shouldn’t have been so sanguine. Saturday morning we packed the 911 and the Miata and motored off to Pittsburgh. We arrived at our hotel about eight miles from Schenley Park and I shut off the air conditioning and the car. We went inside and met an old friend of mine from high school named Bob. Photos: Doug Wright NOR-PCA Voices from the Trunk I’ll sleep on it. The next day it’s back to the track in the VW for more Porsche enjoyment. Thanks again Bob! Of course the Miata runs like a champ. Darned Japanese cars! Starting Out for Pittsburgh It’s hot. The Porsche coughs to life for all of about ten seconds and then dies. I’ve seen this before and figured it’s just vapor lock from the heat. Well, no. The car refused to restart. Boy am I disappointed. I drove 120 miles to go to a Porsche event and I’ll show up in Bob’s VW! It’s a nice VW, but still. Thanks to Bob for saving the day! We had a good day at the track and saw lots of Porsches and our Porsche friends. We had a good time in spite of the withering heat. Judy saw two unusual cars like her parents used to have. A Checker and a Scout II! That evening back at the hotel I called a friend, like on Who wants to be a Millionaire. We play sempai / kohai and walk through some 911 diagnostics. Take off the air cleaner cover. Move the air plate. Do the injectors sound like a harmonica? Yes. Listen to the CD box. Does it whine? Yes. Pull an injector and lift the air plate. Does it spray? Yes. Pull a plug wire and ground it to a screwdriver. Does it spark? Yes. Check the throttle actuation. It’s good. Okay. We’ve got fuel, spark, and air. Maybe it’s the timing. Check the distributor. Point gap is around .016 inch just like normal. Hmmm. Fortunately it’s a 38 year old car and we can check all these things. If it were 8 years old or less I’d need a laptop and software to determine the same thing! Still the car won’t start! Grrrr. november 2011 Sunday thankfully is a little cooler. We had fun watching the Porsche parade lap and the racing. I begin to worry about what to do with my dead 911. I talked to all sorts of Porsche people about my plight. The Allegheny Region president directed me to the proprietor of a local independent Porsche shop. Yes. It’s really all about the people. I met Pete Delmer of Pete’s European Techniques and we formulate a plan. If the car still doesn’t restart he’ll have it towed to his shop to diagnose and repair it. We got back to the hotel around 2 pm and still the car won’t start. We even tried to roll start it to no avail. I made a reservation on line for the MegaBus for son Steve and me. I called the towing company. They will pick the car up the next day. I put the key in an envelope with a note and left it with the desk clerk at the hotel. Gulp. Big leap of faith. Bob took us to the bus station. Thanks again Bob! The girls motor off homeward bound in the trusty Miata. Darned Japanese cars! The ride back to Cleveland was pretty nice, for a bus. If you go mid-week with a reservation a week in advance it’s only $1.50 a person. Are they eleemosynary or what?! The bus is clean, has wifi, 120 VAC outlet, and has comfortable seats. We almost beat the girls in that darned Miata back to Cleveland. (cont. on page 12) 11 pittsburgh porsche problems (cont.) It seems when I removed the alternator housing from the car I had to move the coil. Well, moving the coil caused the positive lead to come loose. That intermittent connection while driving destroyed the coil. Luckily the car died in the hotel parking lot and not on the highway. The Long Ride Home The next afternoon Cress towing called to let me know the 911 is safely at Pete’s. Whew! Then Tuesday afternoon Pete called me. I figured it’s something expensive. No, it’s just a non-functional ignition coil. He replaced it then reset the timing and idle speed. He then road tested it and pronounced that the Porsche performed perfectly. Many thanks to Pete Delmer, Cress Towing, Eric Steinel, and Bob King for getting me through a rough situation. If you’re ever in Pittsburgh, actually Coraopolis, and have a need for Porsche repairs or parts, look up Pete’s European Techniques. It’s a first rate shop and can accommodate just about any Porsche need. Actually he works on other European marques too so you needn’t be bashful bringing him your BMW. The cars are interesting, but they’re what bring great people together. 356 Show Field at the PVGP 12 NOR-PCA Voices from the Trunk call for 2012 advertisers shannon mccue ARE YOU INTERESTED IN ADVERTISING IN VOICES IN 2012?? IFC The Coin Shop........................................... BC 31 Checkered Flag Editor Les Checel I think Mr. Penske made a mistake or maybe just misplaced my invitation to the Porsche Beachwood dealership opening party. In any event, I was left to read about the affair in the 9-29-11 Plain Dealer Metro Section. Commentary columnist Mark Naymik head-lined his description of the evening with the words “Porsche Buyers Good for the Local Economy.” Mark pulled up to the red carpet in a 130K mi. Saturn SUV. I could have arrived in something more fitting and written a positive spin review too. But we will have to settle for the view through Mark’s eyes. He was impressed with the sparkle on the showroom floor, especially that coming from a Red Panamera and from the bling worn by the party people. Waiters from Red the Steakhouse were circulating with shot glasses full of pumpkin soup. The next time Roberta Heller invites me over for dinner I’m going to request she serves that in bowls. I’d bet hers would be better. The service area made a big favorable impression. The spaciousness, cleanliness, and décor reminded Naymik of a modern hotel lobby. Was his viewpoint influenced by the high-end sushi offered, the vintage and current Porsches on display, the ice sculptured Porsche Crest, and the cool jazz band playing off to the side? But the real purpose of Naymik’s column was to debate the decision of Penske Automotive to invest $7.7 million to refurbish the corner property at Chagrin Blvd. & Richmond Rd. In today’s tough economic climate does it make sense to open a business which caters to the affluent Porsche buyer? Roger, being the shrewd businessman that he is, surely thinks so. Economists with a Republican bent would say that tax cuts on Porsche buyers would allow their purchase dollars to cause a trickle down economy boost. The Democratic economic experts counter that tax breaks for people like the 26 Beachwood Porsche employees would better stimulate by freeing up dollars for purchases of refrigerators, back to school clothes, and home roof repairs. I’m not here to take sides on this issue. Maybe we should ask people like Brad, Bill, Dave, or Kellen what they think. And for equal time talk to the new owner of that Red Panamera. The only negative he had to report was a fog machine blowing white haze through the room. It could have been worse. Picture my 914/6 idling in Service Bay 10 before it got its valve guides replaced. 32 NOR-PCA Voices from the Trunk 25855 Chagrin Blvd. Beachwood, OH 44122 2167634911 www.porscheofbeachwood.com LOCATED AT KAMM’S CORNER 17012 Lorain Avenue * Cleveland, OH 44111 Phone: 216-476-1556 * Fax: 216-476-8812 * Email: [email protected] Hours: Mon - Fri: 10 am - 5 pm * Sat: 10 am - 1 pm Greg Panik Established 1979 WWW.COINSHOPCLEVELAND.COM Gold, Silver & Platinum * Gold Jewelry U.S. & Foreign Coins * Sterling Flatware Private Mint Gold & Silver * Platinum Jewelry & Wire Bullion Gold & Silver Coins * Mint & Proof Sets BUYING: U.S. & Foreign Coins * Coin Supplies * Bullion BUYING: SELLING: Voices from the Trunk c/o Pat Ellert 7559 Brecksville Rd.
