Pretty Tough All Stars Proposal with Gretchen Bleiler, Jessica
We’re not bragging or anything but we’ve recruited some of the fastest, toughest, gnarliest
and, dare we say, most beautiful athletes on the planet for a new YA book series!
These athletes – Gretchen Bleiler, Julie Foudy, Carmelita Jeter, Jessica Mendoza and
Summer Sanders - have won dozens of Olympic and X Games medals along with tons of
accolades. They’ve overcome difficult odds to become role models to millions of girls (and
boys) who look up to them for their athletic accomplishments as well as their passion, style,
and ability to inspire (see bios under Roster).
When not making history, these athletes all maintain a high public profile. They give
back to their communities by running camps and leadership training for girls. They
appear on television and in print supporting numerous major brands and causes. They
speak at big events and conferences and they’re active on social media with more than
200,000 combined Twitter followers.
Women have always faced challenges in the sports world and each of our athletes has a
great personal story that includes both heartaches and triumphs. For those following in
their footsteps and chasing a dream, these remarkable women have valuable insight
culled from years in the trenches.
WHY PRETTY TOUGH?
Believe it or not, not every girl
is a damsel in distress looking
for Prince Charming. It may be
fun to imagine being a fairytale
princess for a bit but it’s a lot
more fun to dream of being a
kick-ass woman who surfs
twenty- foot waves, dunks
basketballs, sails off vert ramps
or hits grand slams.
Pretty Tough – All
Stars is an extension of the
best-selling Pretty Tough series
(Razorbill) - a line of fiction
featuring teen girls who learn to
play together on the sports field
and in life.
In 2012, Pretty Tough premiered as a scripted online series – directed by Stewart Hendler
(Sorority Row, Halo 4) and starring Adelaide Kane (Power Rangers, Teen Wolf), Crystal
Young and Beth Behrs (2 Broke Girls) on Hulu.
.
Pretty Tough – All Stars is set in the same privileged and picturesque world of Malibu,
California as the previous books but we’re kicking things up a notch. The action switches
from Beachwood High to the elite Beachwood Sports Academy – where the best student
athletes from around the world come to live and train.
Each book will be written by an internationally-known, professional athlete who has
competed at the highest levels, giving the series an unparalleled level of authenticity.
The diverse stories will be adapted into this fictional setting while remaining true to the
trials and tribulations of each athlete’s chosen sport. Readers will meet the athlete’s
friends and families, experience their struggles and successes, and feel the thrills and
heartaches as they tackle the challenges of growing up while shredding the slopes,
ripping up the track and kicking grass on sports fields.
As with all Pretty Tough content, we’ll see athletes develop their independence via
coming-of-age situations and circumstances unique to their lives; Competitive rivalries,
the pressure to excel for parents and coaches, balancing social and sports agendas are just
some of the topics we’ll tackle. And of course, we’ll see girls who are multidimensional.
Girls who like to play hard and run fast but like being feminine as well. Girls who are as
comfortable in running shoes and a ponytail as glitter and high heels. Basically, girls who love
kickin’ butt and busting stereotypes everyday.
GIRLS & SPORT
Being a female athlete isn’t just about physical challenges - it’s
also about being surrounded by amazing teammates who
personify that while winning is important, sports are also about
unity, laughter, dreaming, growing, persisting, dancing and
believing.
Sports teach girls to love the skin they’re in. To be themselves. To
celebrate others. To smile rather than panic in moments of adversity. To
take risks. To act rather than react. To approach each day with a smile. To speak up and stand
up when it matters. Pretty Tough wants girls to know that when they compete, they have the
opportunity to be champions in life as well as sports.
It’s a fact that bookstores are lacking in literary material about girls and sport. This series
fills that gap and captures an audience eager to read about fierce and feminine role
models. We know that girls generally read more than boys – and there are twenty million
girls in the U.S. who play sports – providing a receptive audience to Pretty Tough books.
You Can’t Be What You Don’t See
Society likes to perpetuate stereotypes but in a Pretty Tough world, there is not one monolithic
trope that attempts to put all girls into one category? The jocks are not just
Guys and the girls are not all princesses. Since girls are not supporting cast members in real
life, why should they play that role in popular media?
When females are portrayed as passive individuals, incapable of physical activity and
competition, audiences view the behavior as normal. Just like when girls read or watch
stories about mean girls, that’s who they’ll try to emulate.
By depicting female characters girls can aspire to, we establish an alternative to clichéd
stereotypes. Plus, offering a diverse array of positive female role models will not only
inspire girls, but also help boys learn to respect females they encounter in their lives.
We also want girls to understand that being a female athlete is not an oxymoron. They
can be smart and beautiful as well as tough as nails. The professional athletes writing
these books, along with their literary alter egos, de-stigmatize what it means to be a
female athlete. Bottom line: being pretty AND tough are not mutually exclusive.
SERIES OVERVIEW
Pretty Tough All-Stars is a fictional series about girls and sport; but more than that, it is about
the way female athletes think and deal with the world around them. It's about confronting the
first real obstacles that life throws at them outside the safety of their home and parents.
For most kids, the tween/teen years represent something they're simply trying to survive–
without getting humiliated or in trouble. Elite athletes have another layer of challenges –
including finding the time to excel at their sport while juggling all the other aspects of
adolescence.
While sports stories often seem formulaic, Pretty Tough is not about neat resolutions and
tidy endings. There may be victories at the end of each book (or not) – but bits of
headway or realizations that open the door to change and improvement will play an
equally prominent role.
Most importantly, the series will leverage the Pretty Tough brand mission: to provide
high-quality, specialty content, products and services that empower and motivate young
women to embrace their athleticism and lead active, healthy lifestyles.
CHARACTERS
Pretty Tough deals with duality and the fact that no one fits into a box. We try to deconstruct
the complexities of a female athlete and demonstrate that girls need not be reduced to a single
identity. Throughout the series, characters will have pre-conceived notions of
how the world works challenged. Differences will not be cut and dry. Characters will
learn that people are ultimately defined by their actions and not their sport or gender.
LOCATION
Beachwood Sports Academy is a fictitious elite training facility in the beachside
community of Malibu. Think IMG where the best of the best – from pros to aspiring pros
- train full-time. The Elite Program is reserved for the highest caliber athletes who need a
flexible school schedule to accommodate their training and competition.
From the BSA catalogue:
BSA has close ties to Beachwood High – the setting of the popular Pretty Tough series with cross-over and recurring characters including B-Dub Athletic Director Martie Reese.
The Beachwood association allows students at the Sports Academy to enjoy a world-class
college preparatory education while honing their athletic skills. By offering flexible
scheduling that allows young athletes to train, travel and compete – the college prep
school program prepares students for success on multiple levels.
Academy Admissions
Beachwood Sports Academy looks for student-athletes who are hardworking and dedicated
both in their sport and in life. Athletes who train at BSA are willing to do whatever it takes to
improve – they practice hard, refine their skills, study the sport and their opponents, build up
strength, speed, conditioning, body composition and, most importantly, become mentally
strong. Because often, it is the mental game that is most difficult to conquer.
Housing
Beachwood boarding students benefit athletically, academically, culturally, and emotionally
through living and training in a supervised, athlete-centered environment. The Academy
houses student-athletes in three areas on campus. Younger students typically reside in the
Main House, a centrally located dorm-style building on campus. Victory House is located
behind the tennis courts, and many of the male students are housed in this area. Academy
House is located behind the baseball fields, and most female students reside in this area.
Ongoing Storylines:
The series follows the very realistic, often touching lives of dedicated athletes who take grit
and glory to new levels. In addition to the main storylines connected to the individual authors,
here are just a few of the ongoing stories and subplots we'll see:
• Relationships: Arcing over the series, we will witness the break-up of the Academy Athlete
Director and her boyfriend, a professional basketball player. Seeing the AD embrace her
newfound independence, the girls learn a lot about healthy relationships.
• Friendship: Like Bird and Magic, an extreme introvert and an extreme extrovert, two
competitors become the best of friends. The two are usually at loggerheads about one thing or
another however, as the series progresses, they develop a deep bond of respect for each other.
• Family: Arcing over the series, one of the athletes boarding at the Academy deals with her
father’s battle with ALS. While she’s busy trying to avoid the pain, a veritable village of
family and friends shore up her world.
• Concussions: One of the guys at BSA has a series of concussions that impact his mood and
personality helping to raise awareness of the underreported dangers of head injuries in sports.
• Body Image: Over the course of the series, one of the girls befriends a new guy who is
extremely overweight. She finds her perfect intellectual partner but can't get past the fact that
he's ... well ... less than perfect by physical standards.
• Environment: Whether a snowboarder, a surfer or a softball player, climate change impacts
athletes lives. When possible, we’ll weave in messages of conservation.
