Indeed, our federation has made a challenge that of reviving
university sport in Africa.
Effectivement, notre fédération a décidé de ranimer les jeux
sportifs universitaires en Afrique.

Today, the participation of fifteen countries in this fourth
edition of the African university games is a true evidence
of your support and commitment to this noble project of
building up a strong and lasting university sport movement in
Africa.
Aujourd’hui, la participation de quinze pays dans cette
quatrième édition des jeux africains universitaires, fait
preuve de votre soutien et engagement à ce projet noble
de construire un mouvement de sport universitaire fort en
Afrique.
Africans came close to each other during their stay in South
African land, to discover and know each other, creating by this
friendship and brotherhood links within sport competition
and sane emulation.
Les africains se sont liés pendant leur séjour en Afrique
du Sud, ils se sont découverts et mieux connus, tout cela,
en créant une amitié et une fraternité dans la compétition
sportive.
Going forward, Africans will share their dreams of a better
and developed continent because they will have to contribute
in its realisation, being the holders of changes in the progress
and generosity.
Pour le future, les africains partageront leurs rêves d’un
continent meilleur et plus développé, car ils devront
contribuer à cette réalisation, étant la clé du changement et

A NEW ERA HAS BEGUN
We have entered a new era in the establishment and
promotion of student sport in Africa as we just came from
celebrating the hosting of the IVth All Africa Student Games
in South Africa. Our work has started now in all earnest
in respect of the awakening of African Student Sport to be
counted against the World. The year 2006 will be recorded as
a very special year in the history of FASU and CUCSA Zone
VI for this combined effort to light the flames of these two
student sport organisations in the promotion of a formidable
unified student sports movement in Africa of which we all will
be proud of.
LE DEBUT D’UNE NOUVELLE Époque
Nous entrons dans une nouvelle époque de l’établissement
et promotion de sport universitaires en Afrique comme nous
venons de célébrer l’animation des IVe Jeux Universitaires
d’Afrique en Afrique du Sud. Notre travail a sérieusement
commencé pour faire reconnaître l’éveil du Sport Universitaire en Afrique. L’année 2006 sera reconnue comme une année très particulière dans l’histoire de FASU et CUCSA Zone
VI grâce à cette collaboration commune qui a allumer les
flammes de ces deux organisations sportives universitaires et
pour la promotion d’un mouvement extraordinaire unifié de
sport universitaire en Afrique et dont nous serons tous fiers.
The hosting of the FASU Games came just after a very important month in South Africa: “The 30th Commemoration of
June 16,1976”, a day that is pivotal in ushering a democratic
era in South Africa. FASU could not have chosen a better
country to host these games, at a time like this. The celebration of youth month spilled over to the FASU Games 2006,
where Children of the African Soil gathered under one roof
to celebrate their youth as well as being African.
L’animation des Jeux FASU ont eu lieu après un mois très
important en Afrique du Sud: ‘la 30ème commémoration de
la date du 16 Juin 1976’, une date importante dans la mise en
place d’une Afrique du Sud démocratique. FASU n’aurait peu
choisir un meilleur pays pour animer ces jeux, à une période
telle que celle-ci. La célébration du mois de la jeunesse a
débordé sur les Jeux FASU 2006, où les Enfants de terre Africaine, se sont réunis sous un toit, pour célébrer leur jeunesse
et le fait d’être africains.
My thanks goes to the Executive and the entire CUCSA Zone
VI family for their understanding in granting South Africa the
opportunity to host the FASU Games during the same period
we are supposed to host the CUCSA Zone VI Games. This
unselfish act, I hope will be noted in the history of FISU in the
context of the development of student sport in the World.
JJe remercie le cadre et toute la famille CUCSA Zone VI
pour leur compréhension en accordant à l’Afrique du Sud
l’opportunité d’accueillir les jeux FASU dans la même période
à laquelle nous accueillons les Jeux CUCSA Zone VI. Cet acte
désintéressé, j’espère, sera note dans l’histoire de FISU, dans
le contexte du développement du sport universitaire dans le
monde.
Finally, we wish to express our gratitude to SASSU for their
tireless efforts in developing student sport and for hosting this
auspicious event on the calendar of FASU.

En dernier lieu, nous voudrions remercier SASSU pour
leurs efforts interminables dans le développement du sport
d’étudiant et pour avoir animé cet événement propice sur le
calendrier de FASU.
On behalf of SASSU, I wish to convey that the support of the
International University Sport movement will go down in the
record books of the South African Sports in general, and the
Student Sport Union in particular. I also wish to encourage
everyone to take the memory and light of the FASU Games
2006 and shine it as a baton that will set fire to the entire
African Student Sport movement, and all its volunteers.
The ongoing message of the prevention of the HIV/AIDS pandemic is one that we as the youth of South Africa, as well as
Africa, would like to spread to all our neighbouring friends.
Moving forward; let the spirit of these games shape the future
of our continent.

South Africa heartily welcomed the rest of Africa to the 4th
FASU Games which continue to emphasise the interlink between Sport and Education, whilst preparing athletes for even
bigger events like the World Student Games, All Africa Games
and Olympics.

aux quatrième jeux FASU, qui continuent à souligner les liens
entre le sport et l’éducation, en préparant des athlètes pour

I am also personally elated to have welcomed both FASU and
FISU family leaders, most of whom I had the privilege to meet
at the World Student Games in Izmir, Turkey last year. Thanks
for keeping to your word and coming.

As one of the institutions to host the FASU All Africa Student
Games in South Africa, it was a privilege to welcome all participants, students and officials of the visiting African nations
to the campus of the University of Pretoria. The University
of Pretoria is proud to be a part of this event, and to be able
to make its facilities available. We were also honoured with
the presence of high profile leaders of the International and
Continental University Sports Federations and trust that they
enjoyed their stay and felt most welcome.

Hosted by our student wing – SASSU, in collaboration with
our Zone VI structure, CUCSA, these games have succeeded.
Africa is yearning for more positive news, and sport helps in
being a vehicle to achieve peace and all other acceptable human values.
SASCOC appreciates the tireless work done by the organising committee and hopes that athletes and officials will do
their best in return to finally champion the course of a stable
university sport environment in our continent.

Months of hard work and planning by the Local Organising
Committee and their support team finally paid off when the FASU
Games took place from the 1st to the 8th of July 2006. The Games
were declared open in Tshwane on the 2nd of July 2006 during the
Opening Ceremony, a first for the Games. The participation of a
record number of over 900 athletes and officials from 17 countries
contributed to the 4th of these Games to be the most extensive
and successful to date.
Des mois de travaux et de planification par le comité local organisant et leur équipe de support a finallement été
récompensé, lorsque les Jeux FASU ont eu lieu du 1er au 8
Juillet 2006. Les Jeux ont été déclarés ouverts à Tshwane le 2
Juillet 2006 pendant la cérémonie d’ouverture, chose nouvelle pour les Jeux. La participation de plus de 900 athlètes et
fonctionnaires de 17 pays a contribué au succès et vasteté du
quatrième de ces jeux à présent.
The 2006 FASU Games was widely visited from as far as the
Chinese Republic and Belgrade, the latter promoting their 2009
Universiade.VIP’s in attendance included Mr. Ben Naobeb, CUCSA
President, SASCOC President Mr. Moss Mashishi, as well as Mr.
Roch Campana and the rest of his FISU delegation.
Les Jeux FASU 2006 ont été radicalement visité de pays tels
que la République de Chine, et Belgrade, ce dernier ayant
promu leurs Universiade 2009. Les invités présents inclus
étaient, Mr. Ben Naobeb, président de CUCSA, le président de
SASCOC, Mr. Moss Mashishi, ainsi que Mr. Roch Campana et
le reste de sa délégation FISU.
FASU President, Mr. Hassan Chikh and members of the FASU
Executive Committee were also present for the Games and
in addition for the FASU General Assembly during which new
members of the executive committee were elected. The General
Assembly took place on the 3rd of July 2006 in the city of
Tshwane.
Le président de FASU, Mr. Hassan Chick, et les membres du
comité exécutif de FASU étaient aussi présent lors des Jeux
et aussi pour l’assemblée générale de FASU, pendant laquelle,
de nouveaux membres du comité exécutif ont étés élus.
L’assemblée générale a eu lieu le 3 Juillet 2006 dans la ville de
Tshwane.
The 4th FASU Games was hosted under the banner of developing
sport in Africa and promoted fair play and sportsmanship. Well
done to all participants, officials and referees for supporting this
ideal. Congratulations to the medal winners and to South Africa for
topping the overall medal standings with 128 medals. Uganda came
second with 31 and Algeria third with 24 medals.
Les quatrièmes Jeux FASU ont étés animés sous la bannière
du développement du sport en Afrique et ont favorisé le jeu
juste et l’esprit sportif. Mes félicitations à tout les participants, fonctionnaires ainsci que les arbitres pour le soutien de
cette cause. Félicitations aussi aux gagnants de médailles, et à
l’Afrique du Sud qui a reçu le plus de médailles, 128 au total.
Uganda est arrivé deuxième avec 31 médailles, et l’Algérie
troisième avec un total de 24 médailles.
A big thank you to all the service providers who made the FASU
Games possible:

and their support and assistance during the accreditation

HISTORY OF THE FASU GAMES
The Federation of African Universities Sports (FASU) or
All African Universities Games was formed in 1974
with the Nigerian Universities Games Association
(NUGA) as a founding member among many other
African Universities grouped together along
national identities across the entire continent.
The first FASU Games took place in Accra,
Ghana between December and January
1974/75 while the second FASU Games were
held in Nairobi, Kenya, in December 1978.
Since Nairobi 1978, all efforts by African countries to
reactivate the Games have proved to be unsuccessful. Not
relenting, an ad hoc committee of four African countries
namely Nigeria, Algeria, Angola and Guinea, was constituted
at the World University Games in Sicily, Italy, in 1997. That
committee ran the affairs of FASU and successfully convened
its 3rd General Assembly in Abuja, Nigeria in May 2002,
through the special intervention of the International University
Sport Federation (FISU) and the Nigerian Federal Ministry of
Sports and Social Development. As a consequence, the FASU
Secretariat was moved to Nigeria. The constitution of FASU
was adopted at the 3rd General Assembly and the following
executive board was elected:

It was at this 3rd General Assembly that the Abubakar Tafawa
Balewa University, Bauchi motivated to host the FASU Games in
2004. Consequently the FASU Games was hosted in Bauchi in
2004.
The South African Student Sports Union (SASSU) was requested
to host the 4th FASU Games in 2006, and the general consensus
was that South Africa would to set the standard for Games to
come.
THE MASCOT - OLIE
The mascot is the face of the host, Tshwane, of the
FASU Games. It represents the image of what the city
of Tshwane wants to achieve during these games, and
that is to showcase the talent, strength, energy and warmth of
South Africa and its people.
The colours of the mascot, firstly represent the South African
sports colours on a national level, and secondly they are two
of the six colours on the South African national flag, which in
addition reflects the face of South Africa’s rainbow nation.
The mascot furthermore depicts the growth rate of sport in
Africa, which puts the continent as a whole in the forefront of
competitive participation as well as a successful host of such
events. It is also aligned with President Thabo Mbeki’s vision
of the African Renaissance where we as a united Africa can be
“alive with possibility”.

HISTORIQUE DES JEUX FASU
La Fédération des ports Universitaires d’Afrique (FASU), ou, les
Jeux Universitaires d’Afrique entière a été fondée en 1974 avec
l’Association Nigérienne des Jeux Africains (NUGA) en tant
que membre fondateur parmi beaucoup d’autres Universités
Africaines regroupéess ensemble suivant les identités nationales
à travers le continent tout entier. Les premiers jeux FASU ont
eu lieu à Accra, Ghana, entre décembre et janvier 19674/75,
alors que les deuxièmes Jeux FASU ont eu lieu en Nairobi,
Kenya en décembre 1978.
Depuis Nairobi 1978, tous les efforts fait par les pays
Africains pour réactiver les Jeux se sont avérés
infructueux. Sans se décourager, un conseil ad hoc
constitué de quatre pays, à noter, le Nigeria, L’algérie,
l’Angola et la Guinée, a été constitué lors des Jeux
Universitaires Mondiaux en Sicile, Italie, en 1997. Ce conseil
a dirigé les affaires de FASU et organisé avec succès, sa
troisième Assemblée Générale à Abuja, Nigeria en mai 2002,
par l’intermédiaire de l’intervention spéciale de la Fédération
Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) et le Ministre
Fédéral Nigérien du Sport et du Développement Social. En
conséquence, le secrétariat du FASU fut déplacé au Nigeria.
La constitution du FASU fut adoptée à la troisieme Assemblée
Générale et le conseil exécutif suivant fut élu :

C’est lors de cette troisième Assemblée Générale que
l’Université de Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi se motiva
pour accueillir les Jeux FASU en 2004. En conséquence, les
Jeux FASU se déroulèrent à Bauchi en 2004.
L’Union Sud Africaine des Sports Universitaires (SASSU) à
été sélectionnée pour accueillir les quatrièmes Jeux FASU
en 2006, et le consensus général est que l’Afrique du Sud est
désignée pour définir le standard des Jeux à venir.

LA MASCOTTE – OLIE
La mascotte est le visage de l’hôte, Tshwane, des Jeux FASU. Il
représente l’image de ce que la cité de Tshwane de la chaleur
de l’Afrique du Sud et de sa population.
Les couleurs de la mascotte, premièrement représentent
les couleurs sportives Sud Africaines au niveau national, et
deuxièmement ce sont deux des six couleurs du Drapeau
National d’Afrique du Sud, et qui en plus, reflètent le visage
d’une nation arc-en-ciel de l’Afrique du Sud.
La mascotte dépeint en outre le taux de croissance du sport
en Afrique, qui pousse tout le continent en entier à la pointe
d’une participation compétitive, ainsi que le plein succès de
l’accueil de tels évènements. Elle est également associée à
la vision du Président Thabo Mbeki sur la Renaissance de
l’Afrique où nous, en tant qu’Afrique unie, pouvons être
“vivant avec des possibilités”.

Tshwane’s heritage
The City of Tshwane is a progressive city whose charm lies in
its harmonious blend of African roots and European traditions.
It is a city where history meets 21st century style and
development, where vibrant township scenes complement
modern shopping centres. The city is a cultural city with a
variety of museums, monuments, historic buildings and art
centres – a lively metropolis that offers accommodation
ranging from vibrant township sleepovers to a five star stay.
Cosmopolitan culture abounds in Tshwane. Arts and craft
markets add a contemporary dimension to the city’s colorful
heritage, while a myriad of museums and monuments offer
visitors a glimpse of the city’s rich history.

The City of Tshwane plays host to numerous local, national
and international sporting events.
Most recent and memorable sporting events include the Rugby
World Cup, Cricket World Cup, All Africa Games, World Tug of
War Championships, World Junior Chess Championships and
the international karate championships.
