“It’s a simple concept: find the best
songwriters around and sit them down
onstage. It’s worked many times over
the years. But there was something
beyond special about this particular
night in September 1996. We not only
had some of the finest songwriters, but
some of the living legends of country
music - kindred spirits who had seen
and done it all. Except for something
like this. Willie, Waylon, Kris, Billy Joe
and Kimmie. They might as well have
been in your living room; to them, the
cameras were invisible. Each played a
few of their favourite songs – some
never performed before, anywhere.
Songs of heartbreak, faith, defiance.
There were stories, “remember whens”
and laughs. There were plenty of laughs
that night, amid the sense that what we
were seeing and hearing might never
happen again. It all came together at the
end with Willie’s familiar refrain, “ON
THE ROAD AGAIN.” At one point in the
show Waylon said, “Boy, wouldn’t you
hate to try to edit this damn thing?!” We
had to do it for TV, but now for the first
time, it’s all here – just like they were
back in your living room again.”
- Terry Lickona (producer Austin City
Limits®)

Duane Steele is one of Canada's top
country stars with a string of hit singles
and videos. Early success in his music
career came as the result of an eightyear run as lead singer and songwriter of

singles, non-stop touring, and a Juno
nomination as Country Group of the

Kalas Kalas
Kalas is a brand new band from
Oakland, CA, that reads like a who’s who
of seminal Bay Area bands over the past
10-plus years. Matt Pike from Sleep and
High On Fire on vocals; Andy Branton
from Econochrist, Grimple, Samiam and
El Dopa on guitars; Paul Kott from
Medication Time and Cruevo on guitars.
Kalas is no side project. Although the
band is made up of such luminaries, its
sound is a perfect amalgamation of
classic heavy metal mixed with more
modern elements of heavy music. Think
High on Fire, Neurosis, Isis and
Discharge all rolled up into one supercharged band. In Kalas Matt Pike is
given the space to explore a more
introspective and tuneful vocal style while
still unleashing his signature blasts of
aggressive roars.
TRACK LISTING:
1. Monuments to Ruins
2. Things Done and
Undone
3. Frozen Sun
4. Godpills
5. Media Screws
6. Mothers Tears
7. Pleasurable Prison
8. Due Time
9. Voyager
In response to the demo that was recorded
over eight months ago, Kalas fielded offers
from a handful of independent record
labels. The band signed a two-record deal
with NY’s Tee Pee Records late in 2005
and headed into the studio in January of
2006 to record their debut, self-titled, full
length album.
KEY SELLING POINTS:
x Advertising in Exclaim!, Decibel, Vice, Harp, Outburn, Impose, Arthur.

Thurston Moore of Ecstatic Peace first
witnessed these ass kickers when they
appeared with Mission Of Burma. The Band’s
flight paths have mostly circulated in the
Northeast US hitting stages with Sonic Youth.
Canadian tour dates are tbc.
Tam first started playing rhythm guitar in a Django
Reinhardt cover band. She has since left the jazz world
and has collaborated with ex – Van Gogh members and
Leloup guitarist Mark Lamb, producing a great collection
of songs. Tam soon began tracking down Thurston
Moore who defiantly played one of the many CD’s she
kept throwing at him. This self titled disc is a compiled
effort of Thurston Moore to best represent the styles of
Tam. Also listen for Tam’s cover of Arcade Fire’s “No
Cars Go”
“I’ve had it in my ipod all year. The songs just knock me
out – it’s an amazing first album!

like lean, airy impressions of classic

Anti-Hero

PRESS QUOTES:
A female-fronted band, ANTI-HERO
brings together a cornucopia of cool
sounds - punk, pop, alternative - all in
the name of rock ‘n’ roll. Listen
closely to their music and lyrics, and

Ted Nugent, with just the right mix of
soul from lead vocalist, Rose Perry.
UNPRETTY was produced by highlyregarded Rob Sanzo of Signal to

"Anti-Hero rides this wave by
delivering a one-two punch of
pop and punk that leaves a ****
eating grin on your face as your
knees buckle and you fall to the
mat. Anti-Hero is both of pop and
punk, both rude and charming,
while being true to both
extremes. The reason it works is
their sincerity and energy."

A.M. Interstate
Press Quotes:
“A.M. Interstate plays songs rife with
heartbreak, nostalgia, and
intoxication. Rambling into
darkness of its own accord, like an
18-wheeler rolling slowly but
heedlessly down the slight decline
of a vast, empty parking lot, each
lyricist brings personal experience,
emotion, and poetic clarity to his
verses as well as his singing. Their
melodies weave through ballads,
blues, honky-tonk, straight-edged
rock, and punk rock, brushing
elbows in a sense with artists
ranging from John Mellencamp to
Sonic Youth.” - Jeff Trainor/The

A.M. Interstate
After quickly selling out the first pressing
of their debut concept album (Barron
Confessions), this Portland, Oregon,
band headed back into the recording
studio with a more focused and mature
songwriting approach along with an
eagerness to stretch their boundaries
musically. Filling the 700 square foot
house with as much dated recording
equipment and instruments that they
could get their hands on, they gathered
around the controls, and spent the better
part of a year recording songs to an
analog reel-to-reel machine; Hammond
organs, Wurlitzer pianos, lap steel,
dulcimer, drums and numerous guitars
were the chosen instrumentation for the
project. The collaboration between
Jackson Groves and brothers Seth
Erickson and Cy Erickson is a cohesive
exploration through each member’s vision
of indie-music – psychedelic, rocking and
dreamy. With the opening drone-folk track
“Golden Age”, to themed-album psych-pop
“Thin Again”, to the closing country-folk
lullaby “Neon River”, the fruit of these
threes’ labor is reflected on the twelve track
self-titled album.
A.M. Interstate traffics in a gauzy, mescaline-tinged sound not unlike Mazzy Star, Opal,
Thin White Rope, and the venerable paisley rockers The Rain Parade. The band has
been compared to a wide spectrum of artists ranging from Urge Overkill and
Steppenwolf to most alt-country artists on the scene today as well. Sounds impossible;
you have to hear this band for yourself.

If you’re only familiar with Scott Walker’s
brooding post-1967 solo work, when the
enigmatic crooner gained renown as a
leading English interpreter of Jacques
Brel and the writer of his own darkly
insightful pieces sung in a sophisticated
style well removed from his mid-‘60s pop
hits as lead singer of the Walker Brothers
(“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore,”
“Make It Easy On Yourself”), the early
recordings on this collection may come
as something of a surprise.
During the late 1950s, the teenaged
singer was still doing business under his
real name Scott Engel, his initial output
ranging from unabashed rock and roll to
tried-and-true pop standards as his voice
deepened and matured with every
release. With an exquisitely pomaded
pompadour that Elvis Presley himself
might have envied, these sides prove he
had the voice to match. This is where it all
began for the former Scott Engel. These
early sides in no way anticipated future
musical directions, but there was clearly an
abundance of talent already in place.

One of the most successful integrated
doo-wop groups, the Crests waxed the
classic ballad “16 Candles” in 1959. Led
by Johnny Maestro’s warm tenor, their
early singles for the Joyce label (“My
Juanita”, “Sweetest One”) produced their
first hits and attracted the attention of
doo-wop fans from coast to coast.
Rarely featured on CDs, the finally sees
the light of day with this release.
Universally hailed as one of the finest
and most influential vocal groups in pop
music history, the Flamingos defined
doo-wop at its most elegant and
sophisticated, their matchless harmonies
profoundly impacting the Motown Sound
of the 1960s and the Philly soul of the
following decade.
Their out put for
Chicago’s Parrot label produced some of
their finest offerings such as the classic
“Dream of a Lifetime: and, like the Crests
early offerings, their early singles are hard
to find on CD. This compilation offers the
doo-wop nation a closer look at two of the
most influential groups in doo-wop history.
KEY SELLING POINTS:
x Two of the most influential groups of the doo-wop era together on one CD
x Contains the classic hits “My Juanita”, “Sweetest One” (Crests) and “Dream of a
Lifetime” (Flamingos)

Straight out of Toronto, Ontario, and
preparing for world domination, the Cheap
Suits are certainly a force to be reckoned
with. Riding high on the success of their
last self-distributed album ("Canadian
Idles"), an East Coast tour, and a
college/university tour, the Cheap Suits are
preparing to take it to the next level. With
this new offering, One Giant Leap,
produced by Mitch Girio (The Kingpins,
King Apparatus) and mixed/engineered by
Richard Benoit (Sum 41, Red Hot Chili
Peppers), the band has put forth a disc that
melds together their varying influences
leaving the listener with an eclectic group
of songs from the upbeat to the low-down.
“Imagine if Rancid were from Canada and
they listened to more Wilson Pickett-style
soul than they did The Clash,”
(Chartattack.com).
Lyrically, the album covers everything from
the political to affairs of the heart leaving
no one behind when it comes to being able
to relate. The energetic ska/punk
influenced sound commands attention
upon its first listen and the catchy hooks
will keep you coming back for more.
"Currently local ska favourites, songs like
these can only keep a band 'local' for so
long," (Exclaim!).
