evenzeer over de broertjes achter Soulwax en
2manydjs als over het Pukkelpop festival kunnen

3OH!3 (uitgesproken als
"Three-Oh-Three") is een
Amerikaans duo dat zijn naam
ontleent aan de area code van
het universiteitsstadje Boulder (Colorado), waar
bandleden Sean Foreman en Nathaniel Motte elkaar
ontmoetten. Inspiratie voor hun elektronische
partypop zoeken ze vooral in de elektronische hiphop
scene. 3OH!3 bracht tot dusver twee albums uit,
“3OH!3” en “Want”, en scoorde enkele indiehitjes
met de singles ‘Don’t Trust Me’ en ‘Starstrukk feat.
Katy Perry’. Hun bekendheid danken ze vooral aan
hun energieke live shows en parodiërende
verkleedpartijen. Let’s do the 3OH!3!
Sinds hun debuut 12”
‘Caramellas/Aeroplane’ (2007)
is het bijzonder snel gegaan
voor het Italiaans/Waalse duo
Stephen Fasano en Vito De Luca, alias Aeroplane.
Hun eigenzinnig remixen productiewerk werd
geapprecieerd door de grootste dj’s en producers, en
hun telefoon rinkelde voortdurend met aanvragen
voor remixwerk voor o.a. Cobra Dukes, Das Pop,
Lindstrøm, Cut Copy, Grace Jones, MGMT, Bloc
Party en Robbie Williams. Toch is voorspelbaarheid
niet aan de orde bij Aeroplane. Cosmic nu disco,
psychedelica, balearic, … het behoort allemaal tot de
ingrediënten voor hun opzwepende mix van
electronische muziek. Kitsuné programmeerde hen
voor hun Londense clubavond, MixMag sloot hun
mix-cd bij bij hun magazine, en onlangs koos een
jury met onder andere Carl Cox, Tiësto, Paul van
Dyk, Annie Mac en Pete Tong Aeroplane uit voor het
maken van de vijfhonderdste Essential Mix op BBC
Radio 1. Openen deed Aeroplane met het nummer
'We can 't fly', meteen de première van de eerste
single uit hun langverwachte gelijknamige
debuutalbum.

Met hun energieke live shows
– Spin Magazine riep hen uit
tot beste live band van 2006 —
is het Amerikaanse Against
Me! op korte tijd uitgegroeid
tot één van de belangrijkste
punkbands in het folk-punk
genre. Tegelijkertijd wordt hun
punk as fuck attitude ondersteund door cynische,
dan wel hilarische of ontroerend anti-establishment
lyrics van zanger Tom Gabel. Alsof Billy Bragg, The
Clash en Dropkick Murphys de krachten gebundeld
hebben in een ultieme poging Amerika een geweten
te schoppen.
"Manchester's best-kept secret."
Like M83, they're taking the hidden melancholia of
the '80s with shivering Morten Harket style
vocals..and a collection of catchy hooks mix
beautifully with the guitar work reminiscent of Modest
Mouse and the Pixies.
With a Mercury Rev tinged rock sound (and shades
of really early Idlewild too) expect anthemic choruses,
and a fair degree of thrashing about.

AKS ( Addicted Kru Sound) is
an electronic music band from
Louvain, Belgium. Their music
is a blend many styles , mostly notably dubstep,
breakbeat, drum n bass and electro. They bring
energetic live performances alongside Selah Sue.

Het palmares van Alain
Johannes is ronduit
indrukwekkend. Zijn rol als
medeoprichter van de band
Eleven en muzikant bij Queens Of The Stone Age,
Them Crooked Vultures, Chris Cornell en Mark
Lanegan is legendarisch. Eind augustus verschijnt
‘Spark’, zijn debuutalbum onder eigen naam. Op het
album leren we Johannes kennen als getalenteerd
songwriter, zanger, producer en multi-instrumentalist.
Met invloeden vanuit de klassieke muziek, flamenco
en Indiaanse muziek demonstreert Johannes veel
meer dan enkel een rockgitarist te zijn.
And So I Watch
You From Afar

Wat verfrissende postrock
betreft waren de afgelopen
jaren een betrekkelijk kalme
periode. Tot het viertal And So I Watch You
weergegeven. In die serie is Baltimore, een stad met
ruim 650.000 inwoners aan de Amerikaanse
oostkust, immers één van de belangrijkste
hoofdpersonages. Des te groter is dan ook het
contrast met de opgewekte poppunkdeuntjes zoals
die worden gebracht door All Time Low, een viertal
piepjonge muzikanten uit, jawel, Baltimore. Na het
einde van hun studies, tijdens dewelke ze al enkele
ep’s inblikten, dook het viertal in 2007 een echte
opnamestudio in. Met het resultaat ‘So Wrong, It’s
Right’ –een verzameling hoogst aanstekelijke en
catchy songs— veroverde All Time Low in geen tijd
thuisland USA, maar ook de rest van de wereld. Op
dit moment werkt de band volop aan een nieuwe
plaat die ze op Pukkelpop aan haar Belgische fans
komt voorstellen. Een must voor de fans van Blink182!
periode. Tot het viertal And So I Watch You
From Afar (ASIWYFA) uit Belfast in 2007 op de
proppen kwam met hun in eigen beheer opgenomen
ep ‘This Is Our Machine And Nothing Can Stop It’. In
april vorig jaar volgde dan hun titelloze debuutplaat.
‘The lynch pin at the heart of Belfast’s extraordinary
music scene…’, ‘A brain-annihilating barrage of
rhythms and rottweilers…’, ‘Plucked from the
heavens, colossal…’: het 65 minuten durende
instrumentale opus deed critici schuimbekken van
enthousiasme. Alsof de tourbus van Sigur Rós crasht
tegen de vrachtwagen van Fugazi, en Matthew
Bellamy toesnelt als urgentiearts. Het album geldt
sindsdien als blauwdruk voor hoe men uit gitaren
een sound kan persen waarvan het bestaan
totnogtoe onbekend was gebleven. Live biedt
ASIWYFA zowel muzikaal als visueel een
fascinerend spektakel. Het podium is soms letterlijk
te klein voor de hyperactieve Ieren, die met wilde
bewegingen en dito grimassen het publiek bespelen
op de tonen van energieke, instrumentale postherrie. Met de begin dit jaar verschenen ep ‘Letters’
op zak is het ook voor ons uitkijken naar de
terugkeer van één van de revelaties van Pukkelpop
2009.

Au Revoir
Simone

In 1996 stonden de jonge
wolven van Ash een eerste
keer op Pukkelpop. Aanleiding
was ‘1977’, de plaat die voor
de grote doorbraak had gezorgd. Ondertussen is het
Noord-Ierse drietal de dertig voorbij en staan ze al
bijna de helft van hun leven aan de top van de Britse
muziekscene. Net zoals hun muziek onmogelijk te
klasseren valt — van leuke popdeuntjes tot
weergaloze trash-metal — weigert Ash de
conventionele muziekpaden te bewandelen. Met hun
laatste project ‘The A-Z series’ gooien ze het idee
van een volledige plaat de vuilnisbak in en blazen ze
het concept van de single opnieuw leven in. Een jaar
lang, van oktober 2009 tot september 2010 brengt
Ash om de 2 weken een nieuw nummer uit, 26
nieuwe nummers in 52 weken. Check op hun site
aan welke letter ze momenteel zitten!

Au Revoir Simone is een niet
onknap damescollectief uit
Brooklyn, New York. Het frivole
drietal brengt ijzersterke electropopsongs en zweert
daarvoor bij drumcomputers, synthesizers en
handgeklap. Dromerige melodieën en denderende
disco beats: wat op het eerste zicht onverenigbaar
lijkt wordt in handen van Au Revoir Simone warme
en organische elektronische muziek. Zin in een keitof
feestje? Au Revoir Simone!

Gehypet worden is voor
sommige bands belangrijk om
door te breken naar een
ruimer publiek, voor andere
bands is het een vloek eerder dan een zegen. In het
geval van Avi Buffalo zou het allemaal geen ene
moer hebben uitgemaakt want met of zonder hype,
de band van en rond zanger/gitarist Avigdor ZahnerIsenberg zou hoe dan ook potten hebben gebroken.
De schoonheid en vakmanschap die in elk nummer
op hun titelloze debuut boven komt drijven is zelden
Bad Religion bestaat 30 jaar.
Om dit te vieren nam de
legendarische punkrock band tijdens hun
Amerikaanse voorjaarstournee een live-album op dat
ze via hun website als een gratis bedankje
aanbieden aan hun loyale fanbase. Bad Religion
werkt momenteel aan hun vijftiende album dat
ergens in het najaar op de markt moet komen. Hun
30th anniversary tour brengt hen op zaterdag 21
augustus langs de Pukkelpop festivalweide.

Liefhebbers van zeemzoete indiepopdeuntjes kunnen
zich helemaal verliezen in de magistrale muziek van

Band of Horses

There are 5 artists called
"BALTHAZAR". The first is a
Belgian group, the second is
Canadian, the third is from
Holland, the fourth is a Bulgarian DJ and the fifth is a
Black Metal band from New Zealand.
Met de single ‘The Funeral’ en
het album ‘Cease to begin’
appelleerde Band Of Horses in
2007 aan een breder publiek.
Toch bleef de grote doorbraak van de rootsy
indierockers uit Seattle uit. Medeoprichter Rob
Hampton trok zich terug om zich te concentreren op
zijn eigen project Grand Archives, waarop de rest
van de band verhuisde naar South Carolina, de
geboortestreek van de charismatische frontman Ben
Bridwell. Voor de opnames van hun nieuwe album
‘Infinite Arms’ werd, net als voor de vorige twee
albums, producer Phil Ek onder de arm genomen.
Het album kreeg live al behoorlijk wat exposure en
overtuigde Pearl Jam om hen mee op tour te nemen
in Amerika en ons om hen op de affiche van
Pukkelpop 2010 te zetten. Band Of Horses:
krachtvoer voor fans van My Morning Jacket,
Grandaddy en (de jonge) Neil Young!
Belgium:
The belgian Balthazar are an alternative pop band,
with rock, electro and hiphop influences. They were
formed at the end of 2004 in Kortrijk, Belgium. The
band consists of Maarten Devoldere (vocals, keys),
Jinte Deprez (vocals, guitar), Patricia Vanneste
(violin, keys, vocals), Simon Casier (bass, vocals)
and Christophe Claeys (drums).
The band has released their first album, called
"Applause", on march 22nd 2010. They anticipated
the album with gigs all over Europe (Belgium,
France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland,...), a
splendid tour in South Africa and they were invited to
showcase at the Canadian Music Week 2010.
New Zealand
The New Zealand Balthazar is a Black Metal band
from New Zealand of the industrious Mort. They cite
association with Exiled From Light, Schizophrenia,
Funereal, Beyond Light, Serpenthrone, Nystagmus,
Einsamkeit, When Mine Eyes Blacken and Winds Of
Sorrow.

Band of Skulls is an
alternative rock band that
formed in 2008 in
Southampton, England. It
consists of Russel Marsden (guitar, vocals), Emma
Richardson (bass, vocals), and Matt Hayward
(drums), who formed a band after they all met in
college.
Bart werd geboren in 1980.
Voornamelijk als jongen. Bart
won de Culture Comedy Award
(NL) in 2006. De voorronde
van deze wedstrijd was zijn eerste comedy-optreden
ooit. Bart won Humo's Comedy Cup in 2007. Bart
was kapitein in de 'Tabel Van Mendeljev' en de
smeerlap die Philippe Geubels uit de 'Slimste Mens'
speelde. Hij zat ook vijf keer in 'Mag Ik U Kussen?'
en mocht één keer kussen (dat dat met Showbizz
Bart was, hoeft niemand te weten). O ja, achter de
schermen is hij één van de makers van onder
andere Benidorm Bastards en M!LF.

Initially, they played at night clubs in the greater
London area and recorded some demos under the
name of Fleeing New York before changing their
name to Band of Skulls in November 2008. Their
debut album Baby Darling Dollface Honey, distributed
by Shangri-La Music, was released exclusively on
the iTunes Store on 6 March 2009, followed by a
general release on 20 March. The track I Know What
I Am was chosen as iTunes' free Single of the Week
to coincide with the digital release.

opereert al jaren net onder de
grens van de mainstream. Hun
eerste twee albums ‘Beach House ‘ en ‘Devotion ‘
werden op lovende kritieken onthaald in de
indiescene, waarop de band in het vizier kwam van
het Sub Pop label, bekend van onder andere The
Shins, Iron & Wine en Low. Op aangeven van de
platenfirma dook Beach House de studio in met Chris
Coady die eerder ook al achter de knoppen zat bij
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio en Grizzly
Bear. Het resultaat, het album ‘Teen Dream’,
verscheen begin dit jaar en neemt de luisteraar
moeiteloos mee in een muzikaal universum waarin
melancholie, romantiek en ontroering centraal staan.

Well that explains a couple things, starting with the
simple fact that Bear In Heaven’s breakthrough
moments—Grizzly Bear’s blog-baiting endorsement
of “Lovesick Teenagers,” the “Best New Music”
stamp Pitchfork plastered across the Brooklyn band’s
second album, Beast Rest Forth Mouth—didn’t
happen overnight. Believe it or not, frontman Jon
Philpot founded Bear In Heaven way back in 2003,
using the sweeping soundscapes of his previous
project (Presocratics) as a starting point for the
Tunes Nextdoor to Songs EP.
Four years and several lineup changes later, Bear In
Heaven the band (rounded out by Wills, drummer
Joe Stickney and multi-instrumentalist Sadek
Bazaraa) emerged with their first fully-realized
release, Red Bloom of the Boom. A celebration of
wide open spaces and not-quite-sounding-likeanyone-in-particular, it’s the closest Bear In Heaven
have come to cutting a prog rock album, although
Philpot insists, “We’re bigger fans of Krautrock. We’re
suckers for that continual pulse and things that just
hum. You should be able to feel music, not just hear
it.”
That’s certainly the case on Beast Rest Forth Mouth
cuts like “You Do You” and “Wholehearted Mess”—
songs that reach for the stars with Cluster-like synth
lines, Faustian effects, and steely motorik beats. And
then there are the sneaky moments that emphasize
what a widescreen affair Beast is, including the
massive, life-affirming choruses of “Beast In Peace”;
the queasy build and thundercloud climax of “Dust
Cloud”; and the frayed electronics and death march
drums of “Deafening Love.” That fan favorite went
through 23 mix changes before settling into its final
Apocalypse Now-groove.
“We know when a song is done,” explains Philpot,
“but that doesn’t stop us from tweaking it over time.
We’re actually still messing with our current ones!”
Benny Benassi

Marco Benassi, beter bekend
als Benny Benassi, wordt
beschouwd als een van de
beste houseen electro-dj’s ter
wereld. In 2002 vergaarde hij wereldfaam met de
release van zijn megahit ‘Satisfaction’ en in 2008
won hij een Grammy Award voor zijn remix van
Public Enemy's ‘Bring the Noise’. Daarnaast ging hij
als producer/remixer aan de slag voor onder meer
Outkast, Goldfrapp, Felix da Housecat en
Fischerspooner.
The group’s restlessness is understandable when
you consider their background, from Philpot and
Wills’ film/TV work—something that’s taught them to
tell stories through songs—to such side projects and
one-off performances as the scale-climbing metal of
Dark Vibe and the pure minimalism of Rhys
Chatham’s Guitar Trio. As Wills puts it, "We've all
been really lucky. To have spent time discussing
music on a peer level with the likes of Tony Conrad
and Rhys Chatham, it's been an education."

volgde een optreden voor het Canvas programma

op de actualiteit in het programma SPAM (2008).
Sinds januari 2009 presenteert hij samen met Henk
Rijckaert een eigen Canvas-programma, Zonde van
de Zendtijd. In januari 2010 ging het tweede seizoen
van Zonder van de Zendtijd van start.
Biffy Clyro

Meer dan elke andere band is
Biffy Clyro een exponent van
hoe jongeren vandaag de dag
omgaan met muziek. Zich beperken tot een bepaald
genre of muzikale stijl lijkt voorbij gestreefd. In de
plaats wordt er volop geplukt uit verschillende genres
en smaken. Wat leuk of aanstekelijk klinkt wordt
opgeslagen op de harde schijf, wat niet aanslaat
wordt snel verder gespoeld. Het schots drietal Biffy
Clyro bestaande uit de tweeling Ben en James
Johnston aangevuld met zanger/gitarist Simon Neil,
leent volop van bestaande riffs en songs maar slaagt
er dankzij hun complexe songstructuren, manische
tempowisselingen en onnavolgbare ritmes in om een
unieke sound te creëren die het midden houdt tussen
post-grunge en indie-emo. Na een eerste passage in
2007, waarbij ze hun doorbraakplaat ‘Puzzle’
kwamen voorstellen, zal er ditmaal volop gekozen
worden voor nummers uit hun nieuwste plaat ‘Only
Revolutions’, die eind 2009 verscheen. Voor
liefhebbers van Muse meets Foo Fighters meets
Queens Of The Stone Age.
Blink-182

Met een beetje geluk klopt
Blink-182 eind augustus op de
Pukkelpop deur aan met een
nagelnieuw album onder de
getatoeëerde arm. Naar eigen zeggen zou de plaat
donkerder worden dan ooit tevoren. De heren
Hoppus, Delonge en Barker deden een tijdje hun
eigen ding bij onder andere Angels & Airwaves, The
Transplants en +44, maar nu verklaren ze unaniem:
“We can't wait to get out on tour this summer. After a
four year break, we're ready to get out on the road
and play what we hope will be the most amazing tour
of the season”. Happy times!
De eerste avondvullende show 'Gestorven Onzin'
kwam uit in november 2006 in de
Arenbergschouwburg te Antwerpen en bevatte het
beste van zijn materiaal uit twee jaar stand up. Die
show werd in 2008 opgenomen in samenwerking met
Canvas en werd uitgezonden in november 2009.

Vlaanderen
(BRMC) is een Amerikaans trio
uit Californië en maakt rock
zoals rock moet klinken: ruig en tegelijkertijd subtiel.
De band werd opgericht in 1998 en bestaat uit
zanger/gitarist Peter Hayes, bassist Robert Levon
Been en de van bij The Raveonettes ontleende
drumster Leah Shapiro. Het Brits klinkende trio
bracht eerder dit jaar hun pittige zesde album ‘Beat
The Devils Tattoo’ uit waarop eens te meer stevige
rockinvloeden van bands als Manic Street Preachers,
The Verve en The Jesus And Mary Chain merkbaar
zijn. Bluesy rock, folky americana en fuzzy riffs: het
zijn slechts enkele van de topingrediënten van het
rock ’n roll festijn waarmee BRMC het Pukkelpop
publiek zal inpakken.

Pukkelpop is hét favoriete
festival van Laura-Mary Carter
en Steven “The Animal” Ansell
a.k.a. Blood Red Shoes, al kunnen we niet
ontkennen dat de liefde wederzijds is. Het is dan ook
geen toeval dat het duo voor het derde jaar op rij
komt afgezakt naar Kiewit. Blood Red Shoes heeft
het indie/DIY hart op de juist plaats. Hun rauwe
straight-in-your-face sound sleurt ons telkens
opnieuw mee in een nostalgische trip naar de
begindagen van Pukkelpop. Toch hebben de echo’s
van Nirvana, PJ Harvey en Babes in Toyland stilaan
meer en meer plaats gemaakt voor hun eigen,
bloedrode geluid. Hun nieuwste plaat heet ‘Fire Like
This’ en wij durven erop wedden dat ze die titel alle
eer zullen aan doen met licht ontvlambare nummers
als ‘Don’t Ask’, ‘Light It Up’, ‘Heartsink’ en ‘Colours
‘Fade’.

Bloody Beetroots is het alter
ego van electro-punk
producer/dj Sir Bob Cornelius
Rifo. Voor zijn live- en dj-sets laat hij zich bijstaan
door partner in crime dj Tommy Tea. Drie jaar
geleden tekende Bloody Beetroots bij Steve Aoki’s

Blue October is a Texas band headquartered in San
Marcos, Texas, but is originally from Houston, Texas.
The band was formed in 1995 and currently
comprises Justin Furstenfeld (lead vocals), Jeremy

(violin/viola, mandolin, keyboards, and vocals), C.B.
Hudson (guitar) and Matt Noveskey (bass guitar).

Caribou is het muzikale project
van Dan Snaith, een 32-jarige
multi-instrumentalist en doctor
in de wiskunde uit Ontario,
Canada. Zijn releases onder de naam Manitoba
meegerekend bracht hij tot dusver vijf albums op de
markt die stuk voor stuk, hoewel zeer onderscheiden
van aard, als meesterwerk betiteld kunnen worden.
Na eerdere excursies in de elektronische muziek en
krautrock, verklaarde hij de inspiratie voor zijn
fantastische laatste plaat ‘Swim’ (2010) als volgt: “I
got excited by the idea of making dance music that’s
liquid in the way it flows back and forth, the sounds
slosh around in pitch, timbre, pan… Dance music
that sounds like it’s made out of water…”. Caribou’s
live shows — waarbij Snaith gewoonlijk de rol van
drummer/percussionist aanneemt— gaan meestal
gepaard met complexe, psychedelische
schermprojecties, die op zich als videokunst op DVD
worden gereleased.

McCann, alias Caspa, op dit

kompaan Rusko het toonaangevende Dub Police en
Subsoldiers label. Voor zijn ongetwijfeld
bedwelmende dj-set op Pukkelpop laat Caspa zich
vergezellen door MC Rod Azlan, één van de meest
soulvolle en herkenbare stemmen binnen het UK

drummer Andy Gangadeen is Chase & Status

("Kids These Days") is a hiphop group formed in
Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 2005.
The group is a 4-piece made up of Vieze Fur a.k.a.
Vieze Freddie (Freddie Tratlehner), P. Fabergé
(Pepijn Lanen), Willie Wartaal a.k.a. WiWa (Ollicio
Locadia) and 'de Neger des Heils' (Bas Bron).
They are known most notably for their chart-topping
single Watskeburt?!, which then became Dutch
slang for "what's up?!". In 2005 they released their
debut album named Parels voor de zwijnen (pearls
before swine*), featuring raps containing rather
esoteric lyrics full of (partially made up) street
language. With comical lyrics and an attitude telling
they do not take themselves too seriously, they
gained a unique position in the Dutch rap scene.
Their main themes are alcohol, sex and drugs. All
tracks on the group's debut album Parels voor de

elke hippe club exploderen. Nieuw werk zit er al een
tijdje aan te komen en de kans dat primeurs worden
gelanceerd op Pukkelpop is erg groot, getuige hun
aankondiging voor hun tour door China en Japan
eind vorig jaar: “…will play all the new, unreleased
tunes of Digitalism alongside their classic ones.” U

The majority of their debut album, $O$, was released
for free on the Internet in 2009 - Ninja also handed
out free albums with hand-drawn artwork at live
shows called $O$: Burnt By the Master.
As of Q4 2009, the band were 'officially' set to be
working with Magnetron Music and were due to
release a very special, limited-edition package for
2010 featuring the album, a DVD and a book. Die
Antwoord's $O$ Album/DVD/Book package had a

This was until Boing Boing posted their music video

gevaarlijk uit de hoek komen. Met haar
hyperkinetische rapstijl en acrobatisch energieke
puberstem heeft de negentienjarige rapster uit
Tampa Bay het inderdaad op onze knieën gemunt, al
moet je die snelvuuraanval vooral in de partycontext
begrijpen. Vergelijkingen met artiesten als M.I.A.,
Santigold en Kid Sister dringen zich vanzelf op. Haar
initiële YouTube-succes leverde haar een deal op
met Art Jam Records, niet toevallig het label dat ook
Yo! Majesty onderdak verleent.
Het Gentse trio Drums Are For
Parades, bestaande uit Wim
Reygaert (gitaar/zang), diens
broer Geert (gitaar) en Piet Dierickx (drums/zang),
bracht eind 2008 een EP uit met de heerlijke titel
‘Artificial Sacrificial Darkness In The Temple Of The
Damned’. De plaat werd opgenomen onder
goedkeurend oog van Niek Meul van Das Pop, maar
wie zich aan zeemzoete popdeuntjes verwachtte,
verslikt zich serieus in zijn koffie. Drums Are For
Parades is de missing link tussen Amenra en Vandal
X, twee andere bands uit eigen gouw die zweren bij
zware distortion, beukende drums en
duiveluitdrijvend geschreeuw. Chris Goss van
Masters Of Reality, tevens de man die destijds
bepalend was voor de desert-sound van Kyuss en
QOTSA, is alvast fan van deze primitieve, pisnijdige
teringherrie. Niet alleen koos hij Drums Are For
Parades als support voor zijn show in Gent,
bovendien vroeg hij de band, die hij uitriep tot de
nieuwe Kyuss, om een nummer te komen opnemen
in zijn studio.

Erol Alkan is a London-based
Turkish electro DJ. He was
resident DJ and co-founder of
London club Trash, and still
has a hand in the running of its successor Durrr. He
released a series of mash-ups using the alias Kurtis
Rush in the early 2000s. Erol also uses the alias
Mustapha 3000, and is half of the psychedelic rock
act Beyond The Wizards Sleeve. At 2010 he was
acclaimed to be the best DJ of the world in year
2009 according to UK's TOP Magazine.
Touring since 2008 she released her debut single
Under The Sheets on November 16th 2009. The
track was produced by Starsmith, who she has been
working with since the very beginning of her career.
Her debut album was released on the 1st of March
2010 and is named Lights.
She recently won the Brits 'Critics Choice' Award, an
award which has previously been given to acts such
as Adele and Florence + The Machine. On Friday,
8th January 2010, she topped the BBC Sound of
2010 music list which is seen as an accurate
showcase for rising stars for the coming year.

maanden gegokt naar de ware identiteit van Fake
Blood. Was het Hervé? The Count? Boy 8 Bit?
Diplo? Of zaten David en Stephen Dewaele achter
deze underground monsterhit, zoals het Britse NME
onthulde? Intussen is wel genoegzaam bekend dat
het hier gaat om een alter ego van Theo Keating,
beter bekend als Touché, de Engelse dj en producer
die naam maakte als de ene helft van het hiphop/big beat-duo The Wiseguys. Zijn synthy electro blijft
echter mysterieus en spacy: dansmuziek voor party
animals met bovennatuurlijk hematocriet in hun
bloed.

De in Londen residerende
indiefolk band Fanfarlo werd in
2006 gevormd door de
Zweedse muzikant Simon
Balthazar en bracht vorig jaar hun door Peter Katis
(The National, Interpol) geproduceerde debuut
‘Reservoir’ uit. De vijfkoppige band speelde eind
januari voor het eerst op Belgische bodem tijdens het
grote verjaardagsfeest van Duyster in de AB. Met
verfrissende, naar Arcade Fire refererende pop
wisten ze toen op slag de harten van de honderden
aanwezigen te veroveren.

Hoewel de zevenkoppige
dub/reggae/soul band Fat
Freddy’s Drop (FFD) uit
Wellington, Nieuw-Zeeland, een multiraciale groep is,
krijgt hun muziek in eigen land al eens het etiket
Aotearoa roots music toebedeeld. Nochtans reikt de
muzikale horizon van FFD veel breder dan de
inheemse Maori-cultuur. ‘Dr Boondigga and the Big
BW’, FFD’s tweede plaat uit 2009 was het best
verkochte album in eigen land en kreeg ook
internationaal behoorlijk wat bijval. Maar FFD is
vooral live een sensatie die met hun uptempo
gedubde reggaefunk ook op Pukkelpop de handen in
de lucht en de heupen aan het wiegen zal krijgen.

Multi-tasking en multi-talent.
Twee sleutelbegrippen die Flip
Kowlier typeren. Als ze hem
vragen om een beukende,
vettige oersong te schrijven voor de soundtrack van
Ex-Drummer dan levert hij met ‘De grootste lul van ’t
stad’ een song af die niet zou misstaan op de nieuwe
plaat van Queens Of The Stone Age. Als hij zich
toelegt op friethopnummers voor ‘t Hof Van
Commerce komt hij op de proppen met heerlijke
rijmen zoals ‘Zonder Niet’ en ‘Kom Mor Ip’. Met een
handvol klassiekers zoals ‘Min Moaten’, ‘Bjistje In
Min Uoft’, ‘Kwestie Van Organisatie’ en
‘Welgemeende’ staat hij nu al in de galerij van
grootste songschrijvers van de lage landen. Het
verbaasde dan ook niemand dat de man uit Izegem
dit jaar op de proppen kwam met ‘Ottoradio’, een
reggae-plaat waarvan de single ‘Moa Ba Nin’ niet van
de radiostations weg te branden was. Volop zomer
en een beetje Jamaica op Pukkelpop dankzij Flip
Kowlier.
Flying Lotus of kortweg FlyLo
is de artiestennaam van
producer en laptopmuzikant
Steven Ellison. Na zijn debuut
‘1983’ uit 2006 tekende FlyLo een jaar later een
platendeal bij het gerenommeerde Warp Label waar
hij, mede dankzij de fantastische plaat ‘Los Angeles’,
al snel één van de absolute sterren werd. Ellison
hanteert een breed scala van genres, van dubstep
en two step over hiphop en experimentele
electronica naar jazz (hij is de neef van John en Alice
Coltrane), die hij uiterst eigenzinnig tot een magisch
geheel kneed. Ellison weet precies wat hij wil en hoe
hij het wil en werkt dit tot in de perfectie uit. Niet
verwonderlijk dat niemand minder dan Thom Yorke
stond te trappelen om een vocale gastbijdrage te
leveren voor zijn nieuwste plaat ‘Comsogramma’,
voorlopig het absolute meesterwerk in de nog jonge
doch indrukwekkende carrière van Flying Lotus.

Twee jaar geleden kwam
‘Antidotes’, het ambitieuze
De doorbraak voor Four Tet
kwam er in 2001 met ‘Pause’,
debuut van Foals vanuit het
niets aanwaaien. Op die
magistrale plaat combineerde de Britse band flarden
mathrock in de lijn van Battles met de hoekige
ritmiek van Gang Of Four en de dansbare grooves
van !!!. Eind vorig jaar trok het vijftal uit Oxford naar
Zweden om er te werken aan hun nieuwe plaat ‘Total
Life Forever’ die begin mei in de winkels zou moeten
liggen. NME gebruikt voor hun albumbespreking
referenties als Tony Allen, Tom Tom Club,
Ladysmith, Timbaland, Steward Copeland, Andy
Summers, Steve Reich en Philip Glass. Zelf houden
ze het op omschrijvingen zoals “tropical prog” of “like
the dream of an eagle dying”. Omschrijvingen die
ons alvast doen uitkijken naar de exclusieve live
première op Pukkelpop!
een hoogst persoonlijke plaat
waarop Kieran Hebden
traditionele folkgeluiden met elektronica
combineerde. Sindsdien schittert de Londenaar op
constant niveau, met als meest recente meesterwerk
het onlangs verschenen ‘There Is Love in You’. Björk
beweerde ooit dat als elektronische muziek soul mist,
dit komt omdat niemand die er in verwerkt. We
kunnen ons vergissen, maar van weirdo en
wonderkind Kieran Hebden durven we gerust stellen
dat hij zijn laptop minder gebruikt als instrument dan
wel als venster op zijn eigen ziel. Treed binnen in de
wondere wereld van Four Tet en laat de uwe
verwarmen!

Vlaanderen maakte voor het
eerst kennis met mans
capriolen in Studio Brussel’s
‘Studio Kafka’(1995). Hierin was Bart Vanneste onder
meer verantwoordelijk voor ‘De avonturen van de
Here Jezus’ en ‘Frank & Frank’. Later dook hij terug
op als de West-Vlaamse kettingrokende Freddy De
Vadder zowel op de radio (Microkosmos) als op het
podium met zijn eerste programma: “Wa sta ‘k ik ier
eigenlik te doen?”. Met dit bijzonder origineel stukje
character comedy won hij in 2001 Humo’s Comedy
Cup. Wat later trad Freddy De Vadder op als de
frontman van de rockformatie “De Bende van
Miènde”. Op Dranouter 2003 gaven ze het best van
zichzelf in een overvolle Biertent… sindsdien is de
Bende van Miènde een rocklegende.
De laatste jaren schuimt hij onafgebroken theaters,
clubs, festivals, kermissen en ‘baancafé’s’ af. In zijn
soloprogramma ‘ICOON’ bleek Freddy een
vooruitziend chroniqueur van deze tijd. Het
programma hekelde ondermeer de absurde
dominantie van het economische in ons denken. Nu
is Freddy klaar voor een volgende hoofdstuk in zijn
hoogstpersoonlijke autobiografische cabaret en deze
keer is iedereen het er al lang over eens: het is zoals
altijd een verrassend hilarische trip geworden!
Vreemd genoeg wekt deze ex-straatvechter met zijn
confronterende eerlijkheid en een 100% complexloze
‘je m’en fous’ attitude de sympathie op bij grote
lagen van de lokale bevolking.

Mag het iets meer zijn? Voor
de nieuwste plaat van
Frightened Rabbit, ‘The Winter
Of Mixed Drinks’, werd er een extra groepslid
binnengehaald om de band niet alleen op plaat maar
ook live een meer bombastisch geluid mee te geven.
French Horn Rebellion are Robert and David PerlickMolinari, two brothers born and bred in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, currently residing in Brooklyn NY. In
2007, younger brother Robert, an accomplished
French horn player, found himself as principal horn
chair of the prestigious Northwestern University
Symphony Orchestra. Standing at a crossroads, and
fundamentally frustrated by the demands of
mastering such an instrument (that he knew would
never allow him to fully express himself), he finally
asked his brother David to rebel with him, and
together they embarked on a life-long creative
journey.
Having set up shop in the arts/music hub of
Brooklyn, it wasn’t long before French Horn Rebellion
started to impact on the NY music scene, with olderbrother David co-producing and engineering MGMT’s
original “Time to Pretend EP”.
French Horn Rebellion’s international adventures
have already seen them play shows in France and
Belgium, as well as the US, Brazil and Canada,
appear at SXSW, CMJ and NXNE and perform with
the likes of Cool Kids and The Twelves along the
way.

eerst internationaal onder de
aandacht met hun spraakmakende set op het in
2007 door Portishead gecureerde ATP festival. Het
duo brengt melancholische noise met messcherpe
tandjes, en bevindt zich ergens in het muzikale

inventieve indie-rock het hoofdproduct van dit stel
Schotse konijnen. Zanger Scott Hutchison gebruikt
zwartgallige (Britse) humor in zijn teksten om de pijn

Gallows werd door Brett
Gurewitz, grote baas van
Epitaph Records, uitgeroepen tot beste plaat van
2006. Hij twijfelde dan ook geen moment om de plaat
in de Verenigde Staten opnieuw op zijn label uit te
brengen. Het album wordt beschouwd als een van de
beste hardcore platen sinds ‘The Shape Of Punk To
Come’, van het Zweedse Refused. Wie dacht dat
beter doen onmogelijk was kwam bedrogen uit want
op hun tweede plaat ‘Grey Britain’ trok Gallows de
lijn gewoon staalhard door. In de beste old school
traditie van Black Flag en Minor Threat serveren de
heren uit Hertfordshire ons een moderne versie van
de typische rauwe en furieuze hardcore uit de jaren
’80, die ons doet denken aan het beste werk van The
Bronx. Hoog tijd om deze uitmuntende band naar
Kiewit te halen.

Kooks. De grote commerciële doorbraak bleef
vooralsnog uit, maar met singles als ‘Ever So Shy ‘
en ‘I'm Not Made Of Eyes’ demonstreert General
Fiasco genoeg hitpotentieel om het helemaal te
maken.

Lieven Gheysen) verraste
vriend en vijand met zijn
succesvolle theatershow
“Iedereen Paranormaal” als antwoord op de mediatsunami rond Het Zesde Zintuig. Sindsdien pikt de
media gretig in op de kruistocht die Gili voert jegens
allerhande zelfverklaarde paragnosten en
helderzienden. Zijn opmerkelijke TV-passages in
Comedy Casino (Canvas), Villa Vanthilt, Peter Live
en vooral de wekelijkse rubriek in De Laatste Show
(één), deden heel wat stof opwaaien, niet in het
minst in de paranormale wereld.
Gili brengt een hilarische mix van
verbazingwekkende absurditeiten, mentale psychostunts en visuele comedy. Zijn vijf zintuigen zó goed
gebruiken dat het lijkt alsof hij een zesde zintuig
heeft: dat is het vak dat mentalist Gili tot een ware
kunst wist te verheffen.
Maar er is meer!
Ook internationaal breekt Gili potten. Begin 2009
schitterde Gili in het TV-programma “Le Plus Grand
Cabaret Du Monde” op France2. Deze populaire
Franse TV-show haalde méér dan 10 miljoen kijkers.
Nadien bleek ook de Gili-compilatie van het Magisch
Vierkant op YouTube een waanzinnig succes:

Je kan de anekdotes rond de
Californische band Girls zo gek
niet bedenken. Singersongwriter Christopher Owen
groeide op in een sekte waar popmuziek verboden
was, vrouwen hun lichaam te koop aanboden en
menig lid tot zelfmoord werd gedreven. Zijn eerste
gitaar werd hem geschonken door ex-Fleetwood Mac
gitarist Jeremy Spencer (eveneens sektelid) en sinds
zijn jeugd bestaat zijn leven hoofdzakelijke uit
verplichte medicatie, punk rock shows en
kunsthappenings. Toch wordt de muziek van Girls
niet overschaduwd door die verhalen, ze maken er
onafscheidelijk deel van uit. Er zijn de gospel
invloeden, de eenvoudige songteksten, het lo-fi
geluid, de hippie vibe, … Wat hen het meest
kenmerkt is hun eerlijkheid en lak aan conformiteit
met het indiewereldje. Girls: een stelletje authentieke
drop-outs en welmenende freaks. Welkom op
Pukkelpop!
Gili, gevaarlijk grappig, maar bovenal geniaal én
geweldig gezond!

Aan het woord is
Yevhen/Eugene Hudz, een
Oekraïner die tijdens het
Sovjettijdperk naar de Verenigde Staten vluchtte en
samen met andere immigranten de gypsypunkgroep
Gogol Bordello oprichtte. Aan de hand van typische
Balkanmuziek, punk en cabaret vertellen zij de
verhalen van de immigranten in New York. Dankzij
hun ijzersterke live reputatie en overrompelende live
shows (denk aan het ontketende publiek bij hun
vorige Pukkelpop passages) heeft Gogol Bordello
hun motto in de praktijk omgezet. Wereldwijd gingen
al massa’s voor de bijl voor deze gipsy’s, en u bent
de (nogmaals) volgende!

Voor hun doorbraakalbum
`From Mars to Sirius’ uit 2005
nam het Franse Gojira een
verfrissende, conceptuele
aanpak ter hand. Het werd een welgemeende
vuistslag die alle metalclichés onderuit haalde: een
retestrakke, tot in de puntjes uitgewerkte sound, en
een pletwals-groove waarvan de nekspieren als
vanzelf in overdrive geraken. Hun lyrics worden nu
eens niet gedomineerd door rondvliegende
ledematen of levende doden. Nee, centraal staan de
verhalen over de relaties tussen mens en natuur.
Hebben we hier te maken met een stel ongewassen
ecohippies? Alvast niet volgens zanger Joe
Duplantier, die met zijn imponerende strot Gojira tot
de volbloed progressive metalband maakt waaraan
fans van Opeth, Tool, Mastodon en Baroness een
vette kluif zullen hebben. Encore!
Bij de naam Goldfrapp denken
de meeste fans al snel aan de
ravissante blonde verschijning
die zangeres Alison Goldfrapp
is. Wat velen niet weten is dat keyboardspeler Will
Gregory het muzikale brein is achter de songs en
arrangementen van dit kameleonduo uit Londen.
Goldfrapp heeft een hekel aan herhaling en
voorspelbaarheid. Geen enkel nieuw album is een
doorslagje van het vorige, en toch weet je
onmiddellijk dat je naar Goldfrapp aan het luisteren
bent. Op hun nieuwste, ‘Head First’, haalt de groep
dertig jaar oude synthesizers van onder het stof: jaja,
ABBA en Kylie zijn nooit ver weg! Op Pukkelpop zal
frontvrouw Alison zich ongetwijfeld weer laten
opmerken in haar exuberante outfits. Ze blijft dan ook
met stip de secretaresse uit onze natste dromen, de
stewardess met de heetste koffiekan in het vliegtuig!

1999, wist het duo Andy Cato
en Tom Findlay Groove
Armada doorheen aardig wat
stijlwisselingen en muzikaal experimentalisme te

uit Austin, Texas, bracht in
april haar tweede album
‘Hippies’ uit. Net zoals Black
Lips baseert Harlem zich voor zijn songs en sound
op grote voorbeelden The Beatles, The Kinks en
Ramones. Korte nummers dus (‘Hippies’ telt zestien
nummers op een totale tijdsduur van nauwelijks
veertig minuten!), die ergens het midden houden
tussen pure pop en luidruchtige, aanstekelijke punk.

Henk Rijckaert is voor de
comedyliefhebber al lang geen
onbekende meer. U zag hem
meerdere malen verschijnen
op Canvas in Comedy Casino maar de grootste
bekendheid verwierf hij met in zijn eigen TVprogramma: het bekroonde en kijkcijferrecords
verpulverende Zonde van de Zendtijd. Of misschien
zag u hem al live aan het werk, met één van zijn
vorige stand-up comedy shows: Loebas, of het
bejubelde Karton (intussen ook op DVD uit bij PIAS
Comedy).
Henk is aan de slag gegaan met spiksplinternieuw
tekstmateriaal voor zijn nieuwe avondvullende
theatershow ‘Het Experiment’ die in november in
première gaat. In ‘HET EXPERIMENT’ neemt hij zijn
toeschouwers mee in een hoogstpersoonlijke wereld.
Als zeer begenadigd verteller en opmerkzame
observator laat hij u een werkelijkheid zien die u
misschien nooit eerder had opgemerkt. Hij maakt
gedachtensprongen die enkel hij kan bedenken en
sleurt u – gewild of ongewild - mee in zijn eigen
realiteit.

‘A Clockwork Orange’ en ‘Blade Runner’ als grootste
invloed noemt, was het J Magik’s ‘Arabian Nights’ dat
hem op zeventienjarige leeftijd tot de drum ‘n bass
bekeerde. Zijn typische sound is te plaatsen onder de
noemer liquid funk, een meer melodisch subgenre in
de drum ’n bass, dat zich kenmerkt door zijn sterke
invloeden uit de soca, latin, disco, jazz, en funk
muziek, en waarvan Fabio zowat de grondlegger
was. Na een spetterende doortocht in onze BoilerRoom twee jaar geleden is de man in topvorm om
opnieuw een kolkende dj-set af te leveren.

Het Canadese kwartet Holy
Fuck opereert in dezelfde
muzikale regionen als Trans
Am en Battles. Meer nog dan
hun genregenoten zoekt Holy Fuck naar een kale,
diepe groove. Battles maakt muziek met wiskundige
precisie, Trans Am zoekt het grensgebied op tussen
robotfunk, minimalistische post rock en semidansbare krautrock, maar Holy Fuck komt het dichtst
in de buurt van een dance-act. Begin dit jaar
verscheen hun derde album ‘Latin’ waarop Holy Fuck
voor het eerst te horen is in hun meest consistente
live line-up. Drummer Matt Schulz en bassist Matt
McQuaid zorgen voor de complexe
ritmefundamenten terwijl Brian Borcherdt en Graham
Walsh een meeslepend en inspirerend duel aangaan
met effecten en feedback. Energieke, aan agressie
grenzende muziek die schreeuwt om een
oorverdovend volume. Holy Fuck maakte zijn naam
eerder al waar op de podia van Polsslag 2008,
Pukkelpop 2008 en Les Nuits Botanique 2010.

dienst uit. Het electropop-vijftal met de nogal nerdy
looks houdt blijkbaar niet van oneven jaartallen: de
groep werd opgericht in 2000, bracht een eerste
plaat uit in 2004 en brak in 2006 helemaal door met
de plaat ‘The Warning’. Twee jaar later volgde ‘Made
In The Dark’ en een tweede passage op Pukkelpop.
Het is nu 2010 en u raadt het al... Zoals de band
afgelopen voorjaar in de AB nog aantoonde staat een
live show van Hot Chip gelijk aan een
onweerstaanbaar dansfeestje. We raden dan ook
iedereen die er toen niet bij kon zijn aan om deze
herkansing niet te missen!

werd door de Britse kwaliteitskrant The Guardian als

This led the band to consider how they could reach
even more fans in hitherto unvisited or rarely visited
countries, an idea which developed into their most
ambitious undertaking to date, the “Somewhere Back
In Time” Tour, a massive stage production based
heavily on 1985’s “World Slavery Tour”. Beginning
Feb 2008 in India, the first leg alone saw the band fly
75,000km around the world, visiting 21 cities in
eleven countries in the course of less than 7 weeks
in a specially converted Boeing 757 airliner (named
Ed Force One by their fans) carrying all the band,
crew and 12 tons of stage equipment to India,
Australia, Japan, North, Central and South America
before finishing in Canada. This achievement was
doubly remarkable because the plane’s pilot was
none other than lead singer Bruce Dickinson, a
qualified airline Captain with Astraeus Airline. The

in 42 countries and won Best Music Documentary at

DVD, it achieved the No.1 slot in the Music DVD
charts of 25 countries including the US and in the UK
where the first day’s sales were over twice the
combined sales of every other DVD in the Music
DVD Top 50. By the end of the Somewhere Back In
Time Tour, at a sold-out show in Ft Lauderdale
Florida in April 2009, Iron Maiden had played to two
million fans in 38 countries, picking up their first ever
UK Brit Award on the way, for Best British Live Act
2009 – an accolade difficult to argue with.

dan zeer ruim genomen, net als zielsverwanten

door Skream lopen pop- en
rockartiesten elkaar voor de
voeten op zoek naar een passend dubstepjasje voor
hun singles. Eén van de populaire adressen
daarvoor was dat van James Jacob alias Jakwob.
Ondanks zijn imposante remix-cv (Little Boots,
Empire of the Sun, Matisyahu, Ellie Goulding, Lily
Allen, Coco Sumner, Temper Trap, Audio Bullys, …)
staat de twintigjarige dj/producer te trappelen om uit
de schaduw van zijn cliënteel te stappen. Zijn eigen
producties — een album zit er aan te komen —
verraden zijn achtergrond als multi-instrumentalist in
verschillende jazz, death metal en folk bandjes.
Eenzelfde eclecticisme vinden we terug in Jakwob’s
kick-in-the-balls dj-sets, waarin zowel dub als hiphop, drum'n'bass, dubstep en andere genres de

verscheen zijn eerste solo-album ‘Go’, waarop hij
met elektronica en ratelende beats toch wat meer het
contrast met zijn tijdelijk op rust gestelde band
opzocht. Voor zijn live show werkt Jonsi samen met
het gerenommeerde Fifty Nine Productions,
gespecialiseerd in visual design voor live acts en
theatershows. Het resultaat is een geheel unieke live
show met muziek uit zijn soloplaat en onuitgegeven
nieuw materiaal.

debuut 'Well Hunger' kon
alvast op veel bijval rekenen. Cutting Edge: "'Well
Hunger' is een egoïstische noise-uitstap die zwaar
rockend begint met 'When we were Hookers', maar
het meest geniet van de bakken sonische vuiligheid
die Kapitan Korsakov erover strooit. Misleidend en
boordevol dwaalsporen". De single 'When We Were
Hookers' sleepte zelfs op StuBru's 'Select' de
nominatie in de wacht van meest verschroeiende riff
van '09. En dat tussen nog méér coole riffs van
tracks van goed (inter)nationaal volk als The Hickey
Underworld, A Place To Bury Strangers en Baroness.
Cutting Edge riep trouwens ook nog hard: "Kapitan
Korsakov is België's eigenste Fucked Up.". Oh ja!"

door dance. Zanger Kele Okereke op zijn beurt

electro club track for dancefloor stalkers”, zei Kele
over de single ‘Tenderoni’ die de release van het
door Spank Rock’s XXXChange geproduceerde solo
album ‘The Boxer’ voorafgaat.

GCSE in Music and her time studying at the BRIT
School for Performing Arts and Technology in
Croydon, South London. Her first love was acting and
she made moves to start a career in acting by
auditioning at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School but
was rejected. In the days after her rejection she fell
down a flight of stairs, breaking her foot. During her
recovery Nash was unable to go anywhere and
found solace in song writing. She began to write
some new songs, finished old ones and decided that
she would book herself a gig at a local bar to
showcase her songs, and subsequently decided to
start a career in music.

being taught the blues by her father in front of the
family fire, and has been in thrall to the songs and

Les Petits Pilous zijn de neefjes Jean-Patrick en
Anthony. De één leeft en woont in België, de ander
in Parijs, maar beiden groeiden op in Corsica. Het is
daar dat ze zich na het zien van een live show van
Para One bekeerden tot de elektronische muziek.
Bekend werden ze al vanaf hun eerste ep’s ‘Hello
We Are’ en ‘Wake Up’. Met hun nieuwe ep ‘Bielle’ en
hun eerste live show ever hopen ze zich te bewijzen
als vaste waarde.
Limp Bizkit bracht zijn eerste
plaat ‘Three Dollar Bill Y’all’ uit
in 1997 en zou in datzelfde
jaar afzakken naar de Kiewitweide in Hasselt. De groep werd onder de vleugels
genomen door Korn en Deftones, en door het
groeiende succes van de groep in de V.S. zegde de
toen bij ons nog onbekende band haar Pukkelpop
concert af. Bijna vijftien jaar en meer dan 35 miljoen
verkochte platen later is de groep ondanks veel
kritiek en controversie nog steeds een household
name binnen de nu-metal-wereld. ‘Nookie’, ‘Break
Stuff’, ‘Rollin’, … het zijn maar enkele van de vele

Bear. De Californische bandleden zijn allemaal multiinstrumentalist en staan bekend als controlefreak.

Lonelady is het project van de
Britse singer-songwriter Julie
Campbell, live aangevuld met
Andrew Cheetham (drums) en
Gareth Smith (keyboards). Campbell’s debuut ‘Nerve
Up’ verscheen op het gerenommeerde Warp-label,
maar verwacht je niet aan obscure elektronica of
zoals haar naam zou vermoeden een nieuwe Lady
Gaga. Neen, als basis gebruikte Campbell de
viersporen recorder waarmee ze aan de slag ging in
een verlaten industriehal in de buurt van haar

tussen Switch en Diplo, die je
beiden zou kunnen kennen als
producers van onder meer M.I.A., Björk, Kanye West
of Santigold, of als remixers van onder andere The
verantwoordelijk voor de fundamenten in de
Londense dubstep scene. Voor hun spectaculaire
live set gebruiken ze drie Apple MacBook Pro
computers: één voor de drum samples en loops, één
voor de basslines en de derde voor de lead sounds
en samples. Artwork bedient de master laptop
waarmee de andere twee via midi geconnecteerd
zijn. Hun sets bestaan uit een mix van originele,
samen geproducete tracks, en live remixes van
Benga’s en Skream’s tracks. Lage subbaslijnen
wisselen in snel tempo af met minimalistische synth’s
en sample echos, terwijl gesynchroniseerde visuals
van de projectieschermen knallen. Minimal dubstep
die de broekspijpen van je benen flappert en
tentpalen uit grond trilt. Butsen!!!

een fictief Jamaicaans strippersonage – laat het duo
zijn gedeelde passie voor Jamaicaanse (dancehall)
muziek de vrije loop. Ze deden er twee jaar over om
het in 2009 verschenen album ‘Guns Don't Kill
People ... Lazers Do’ te maken. Major Major Lazer
live is een muzikale trip die je meeneemt van de
favelas van Rio naar de dancehalls in Kingston en

The Machines, dus wees maar zeker dat we hier te

Bob is into groovy side of things. The music that he
produces is a mixture of Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul and
Funk. As a kid he was into Rolling Stones as many
of us. He also went through R&B where he picked up
the rhythm and then californian surf wave with Red
Hot Chilli Peppers and Janes Addiction, especially
funky side of things filled with an adrenaline. Moved
into Jazz where Miles did a strong impact on him with
"In A Silent Way" and "Miles In The Sky". After that
everything turned around. Lot of new names started

Wesseltoft... All that has mixed up with some electro

styles but as he says: If you mix all of them together

Eind februari bracht het
Antwerpse vijftal Mintzkov zijn
derde album ‘Rising Sun,
Setting Sun’ uit. De opnames
voor het album gebeurden onder de kundige
begeleiding van de Brit Jagz Kooner, die eerder al
werkte met bands als Primal Scream, Kasabian, New
Order en Reverend & The Makers. Anders dan op
voorganger ‘360°’ koos Mintzkov op de nieuwe plaat
voor een meer gestroomlijnde en meer
dansvloergeoriënteerde aanpak, waarbij
keyboardspeler Pascal Oorts een prominentere rol
kreeg toebedeeld. Toch bleef de voor Mintzkov zo
typische samenzang van zanger/gitarist Philip
Bosschaerts en bassiste Lies Lorquet behouden.
Mintzkov live op Pukkelpop? Humo voorspelde het
als volgt: “Met 'Rising Sun, Setting Sun' zet Mintzkov

Partyharders (depending on
the context) are simply responsible for putting
Belgium and especially their city of Liège on the map
for good.
I think I met those friends of So Me three years ago
in the extremely chaotic backstage of the Pukkelpop
Festival during an unexpected pause (the
soundsystem broke right after Justice's set, leaving
Erol Alkan unable to play at all. Busy P kept a crowd
of 5000 people excited by waving a neon light for 20
minutes or so - classic).
Originally graffiti artists turned graphic designers,
they started putting parties with their friends Forma.t
two years ago, quickly becoming Belgium's coolest
independent event setters (and wildest dj crew).
Pretty much every big name in the current club scene
has played at their parties in Liege and Brussels,

The second: an Edinburgh-based three piece poppunk band, gigging regularly since 2004. The band
released a 4 track EP (Tigershaped) in 2005 and are
recording a full length album to be released in 2009.
The third, a four-piece band: Some bands get lucky.
Others - the ones that tend to matter - get busy. "In
music, there's so much luck involved but we've
always maintained the mentality that there is no way
we cannot get signed, otherwise I'll kill myself or
something," says Proxy frontman Jon Brown. "There
was no way, after years playing together, we were
going to hit twenty-four, get a job and settle down."
Strong words possibly, but its such determination that
brings Proxy's music to your ears. Theirs is a tale of
talent and determination whose seeds were planted
in stuffy pre-teens classrooms. Though Proxy are
English and London-based, the four members of
Proxy were born and raised in three different
continents - half-Chinese frontman Jon Brown in
Hong Kong, Will Hanson in Paris and the Grindy
brothers who form the unwavering rhythm section in
South Africa.
It's possibly these returning alien beginnings that
have made Proxy a singular entity. "We always
wanted to create our own little world to inhabit, as
much as create a band." says Will. "We've never
aligned ourselves with any regional music scene, but
we're just not one of those bands. We exist in own
self-create isolation and like it that way."
Given that guitarists Jon and Will have been playing
together since the age of ten, Proxy's recent singing
to A Records/Island has been a long time coming.
While early shared influences included Queens Of
The Stone Age, Lift To Experience, ...Trail Of Dead
and Jeff Buckley, the early years of the band were
defined by a relatively blas� attitude to what being
in a band meant. At that stage this meant sporadic
gigs when at school or, later, when the members
were back home from college commitments - and
little more. "This band is a long-distance girlfriend,"
says Jon. "It's something we kept returning to,
wherever we were or what we were doing."

In tegenstelling tot wat de
naam doet vermoeden is
Renaissance Man wel degelijk
een duo, zoals de laatste jaren vaak het geval is in
de wereld van dj-sterren. Downtown en Jaxxon, de
twee heren van Renaissance Man, ontmoetten elkaar
in een architectenbureau in Helsinki en al snel
merkten de heren dat hun levensstijl en -visie sterk
gelijk liep. De noodzakelijke muzikale klik volgde dan
ook snel en samen besloten ze te gaan dj’en en
producen. ‘Spraycan’ was een eerste danceknaller
van formaat, maar het uitbrengen van ‘What Is
Guru?’, op het Parijse Sound Pellegrino-label, deed
de carrière van het Finse duo in een
stroomversnelling terechtkomen. De uitnodigingen
voor belangrijke dance-festivals vielen massaal in de
bus alsook de aanvragen van gerenommeerde
namen (Crookers, Brodinski, Health, Le Corps Mince
De Françoise, …) om een nummer door hun mixer te
halen.

dj/producer Stefano Miele
a.k.a. Riva Starr is op korte tijd
tot op grote hoogte gerezen.
Het begon allemaal met zijn 'Snatch!' remixes
waarop hij de gekste folk-, Balkan- en rocksamples
losliet op classics als ‘The End’ van The Doors. Via
het internet vonden zijn bootleg mixes hun weg tot
bij de bekende dj’s Jesse Rose, Fatboy Slim en
Claude Vonstroke, die elkaar voor de voeten liepen
om zijn tracks op hun respectievelijke labels uit te
ontwikkelaar van onder andere Native Instrument's
Traktor Scratch software, het bekende digitale
muziekplatform Beatport.com, de Tonium Pacemaker
draagbare dj mixer, ...:het zijn slechts enkele van de
vele titels en verwezenlijkingen waarop de naam
Richie Hawtin prijkt. Opgroeien deed hij in Ontario,
Canada op de tonen van de Detroit techno en
Chicago house. Geïnspireerd door Motor City
legendes Derrick May, Juan Atkins en Kevin
Saunderson, raakte hij gebeten door de dj- en
productiemicrobe, wat begin 1990 dan weer leidde
tot de oprichting van het befaamde Plus 8
Recordings label, samen met John Acquaviva.
Gaandeweg nam hij met zijn releases onder namen
als Cybersonik, Up!, Chrome, Final Exposure, Circuit
Breaker en FUSE (Futuristic Underground Sound
Experiments) meer en meer afstand van de
klassieke Detroit techno sound richting het steeds
evoluerende Hawtin geluid dat we kennen van parels
als ‘Consumed’ (1998) en ‘Artifakts’, en populaire
mix-cd’s als ‘Decks, EFX & 909’ (1999) en ‘DE9 |
Closer To The Edit’ (2003). Hoewel zijn eerste live
shows dateren van 1993 en hij tussen 2004 en 2009

lege bak bier als drumstel en
een gammele gitaar met slechts drie snaren, speelde
de 65-jarige Steven Gene Wold a.k.a. Seasick Steve
zich de beroemdheid in met zijn passage bij Jools
Holland. Net zoals de White Stripes bewijst Seasick
Steve met zijn rauwe en vettige bluesrock dat
oprechte en eerlijke muziek recht vanuit het hart en
de ziel komt. Het succes van zijn twee studioalbums
brengt hem nu ook op de grotere podia: in 2009
stond hij op het hoofdpodium van Rock Werchter, dit
jaar op dat van Pukkelpop.

essentie nog een rockplaat met “progressive melodic
elements" dan verwijst de Armeense Amerikaan voor

“electro-orchestral-jazz-rock". Voor zijn live show
verwachten wij alvast hysterie en afwisseling alom,

Het Engelse Skindred wordt
door het metalinstituut Metal

het moment. De band verrees in 1998 uit de as van
Dub War waarvan vocalist Benji Webbe al lid was.
Net als Dub War brengt Skindred “ragga metal”, een
hoogst explosieve cocktail van alternative rock, heavy
metal, punk rock en reggae. Midden september vorig
jaar verscheen het derde, goed ontvangen album
genaamd 'Shark Bites And Dog Fights', waarop het
Welshe viertal hun sound een meer elektronische
impuls gaf.

Het zeskoppige Sleepy Sun is
sterk beïnvloed door de
psychedelische rock uit de
jaren ’70 en donkerzwarte
referenties als Black Sabbath, Black Mountain, Black
Crowes en Black Angels zijn dan ook niet uit de
lucht. Net als hun debuut ‘Embrace’ verschijnt ook
hun nieuwe, tweede plaat ‘Fever’ op ATP recordings,
het avontuurlijke label van onder andere Apse,
Deerhoof en Fuck Buttons. In Amerika mochten ze
als support mee op tour met Arctic Monkeys, deze
zomer brengen ze de Californische zon mee naar
Kiewit. Vergeet je tripstick niet!
Beukte Snow Patrol in 2004
met ‘Final Straw’ de deur van
het wereldwijde succes
helemaal open, dan was
opvolger ‘Eyes Open,’ met het prachtige ‘Chasing
Cars’, zowaar nog straffer. Op Pukkelpop 2006
bewees de band dat ze slechts gewapend met 2
akoestische gitaren een festivalweide kon inpakken.
Het in 2008 verschenen ‘A Hundred Million Suns’,
met de monsterhits ‘Take Back The City’ en ‘Crack
The Shutters’, tilde de band op een nog hoger
niveau waar ze probleemloos mag meespelen met
de heel grote jongens. Wereldwijd heeft de band
intussen meer dan zeven miljoen albums verkocht.
Hun live show op de vorige Pukkelpop editie was
zondermeer memorabel, en in november 2009 werd
het compilatiealbum ‘Up to Now’ uitgebracht. Op
nieuw werk blijft het wachten, maar u bent het vast
met ons eens dat een briljante band als deze
absoluut niet mag ontbreken op onze feesteditie.

Jochen Sablon en Vincent De
Boeck, twee kerels uit het
Brusselse leren elkaar kennen
via het net en blijken vlak bij
elkaar te wonen. Ze beginnen samen te dj-en en
muziek te maken die al snel door TMF en StuBru
wordt opgepikt. Niet veel later worden hun nummers
door Crookers, Jokers Of The Scene, Lee Mortimer
en The Bloody Beetroots gedraaid en door de mixer
gehaald. De Italianen vragen Sound Of Stereo zelfs
om mee te werken aan hun nog te verschijnen
debuut. Voor de release van hun ep’s ‘Zoopah
Doopah’ en ‘Heads Up!’ vond het jonge Belgische
fidgettalent onderdak bij het Lektroluv label.
Binnenkort krijgen ze een release op het Dubsided
label van Switch, de nieuwe single is voorzien tegen
september.

daarmee topfavorieten
Florence + The Machine, La Roux en Kasabian
achter zich. Zeggen dat deze dame overloopt van het
talent is bijgevolg een open deur intrappen. Speech
Debelle omarmt hiphop maar doet dit op haar
eigenzinnige, een niet-conventionele manier. Haar
stem is als een warm deken en haar woorden klinken
als heerlijke poëzie. Ze neemt je mee in haar
leefwereld en doet dat met zo’n flow en finesse dat
je werkelijk het gevoel krijgt er zelf deel van uit te
maken. Met de focus op een sterk instrumentale en
akoestische productie (live wordt ze ondersteund
door een contrabas, akoestische gitaar en drums)
neigt de sound van Speech Debelle dan ook naar
eigentijdse jazz en soul met een licht hiphop accent.
De Japans-Californische Steve
Aoki, ook wel gekend als dj
Steve Aoki Kid Millionaire,
heeft een drukke agenda.
Naast zijn activiteiten als club promotor, dj, producer,
modeontwerper en restauranteigenaar, runt hij ook
nog eens zijn eigen Dim Mak Records label. Op de
discografie van dat label prijken namen als Bloc
Party, The Gossip, MSTRKRFT, Klaxons, Whitey,
Mystery Jets en Bloody Beetroots met wie hij het
hardcore punkproject Rifoki opzette. Samen met
Blake Miller maakt hij dan weer remixes en eigen
producties onder de naam Weird Science. Voor zijn
debuutplaat onder eigen naam werkt hij op dit
moment samen met onder andere Kid Cudi, Uffie,
Black Star, Ebony Bones en Weezer.

Stornoway, een Britser dan
Britse band uit Oxford, ontleent
haar naam aan een stadje in
het uiterste noorden van de
Schotse Hebriden. De groep kan het best
omschreven worden als een levende, ademende
roman van Mark Twain en brengt glasheldere,
dromerige indiefolksongs met arrangementen die
geoogst lijken uit de Fleet Foxes-tuin. Dankzij de
uitgepuurde vocals van zanger/gitarist Brian Briggs is
het dan ook puur genieten van pretentieloze songs
als ‘Zorbing’ of ‘Fuel Up’. Net als bij Mumford &
Sons is bij Stornoway de independent-spirit uitermate
aanwezig. Wij durven dan ook met een gerust hart
zeggen: vandaag Pukkelpop, morgen de wereld!
Het theatrale afpellen tot de kern op het podium
staat: een echte mens. Steven is authentiek, niet te
plagiëren. Optredens zijn 'mahieustueus'(1) even
onvoorspelbaar als de doos van Pandora. Toen de
man uit de baarmoeder kroop, werd een groot
improvisatietalent op de wereld gezet. Waar gaat dit
heen? Het pad dat hij in sneltempo volgt, kent
ontelbare zijsporen. Soms slaan zijn uitspattingen
helemaal nergens op... Dan ligt hij op de grond 'vel'

Though the band have enjoyed no mainstream
commercial success, they have received acclaim in
alternative music circles, and their debut album is
currently in Interpunk.com's top 100 items, over 2
years after its release. In addition, they regularly sell
out their live shows, and their first few shows at
Rutgers and The Stone Pony not only sold out, but
had people coming from as far as Minnesota and
Canada. Their second album, a reworking of Catch
22's Keasbey Nights was released on March 7,
2006.
Streetlight Manifesto's third album, entitled
Somewhere In The Between came out on November
13, 2007. Rumors also have it that the band is
currently working on a series of 8 albums entitled
"The 99 Songs of Revolution" in co-operation with

It was the summer of 2002.
The queen mother dies, Everybody's still fucked over
by the 9/11 airplanes crash, 200 people are killed
during a bomb-attack on the island of Bali and a little
country called Belgium hasn't changed a bit since the
Wilfried Martens, Jean Luc Dehaene, Guy Verhofstad
administration. Mike Dubois, a real punkrock dude
from the old school remembers the time that he was
playing in a fast forward, no-nonsense band called
"Les Stroumphs Alcooliques". He remembers those
times and says: "those were the days". He picks up
his guitar, calls his former bassplayer Gerd Vanhoof
and find Jerre, an oldtime friend who just bought
himself a drumset. They finish 7 songs and record
short after it. Fast fucked up songs for fast fucked up
people: "BACK TO BASICS'", which also became the
title of their first EP, released in april 2003. After a
short while Mike became sick of playing the guitar
and Jerre left the band to become a duathlon
legend. Sunpower picked up Davy and Kevin, fucked
up loners from the younger generation and the rest
became history.
Through the years we released 2 more EP's (Total
control and John Terror) and 1 LP. We worked
together with labels such as Still Holding on, HOly
shitPeter Bower and Rock'n'roll radio. We played
with bands such as Negative Approach, Discharge,

SUPERLIJM (pronounced:
“superlame”) is the band of
“boy next door” Pieter-Jan
Delesie, whose songs are
inspired by Grandaddy, Bran Van 3000 and other
great sounds from the 90ies. In his songs
SUPERLIJM tries to return to that decade, when
Belgium’s national goalkeeper Michel Preud’homme
still had curly hair and Edwin Van der Sar was only a
rookie. Back then it was cool to paint t-shirts. AllStars made yet another comeback. And SUPERLIJM
was already trying to save the world by from an
extraterrestial attack, by building a supersonic wall of
sound. His first ep was released in may 2009 by
collectief debonair. The ep was produced by Lieven
Dermul of WAXDOLLS and mastered by Pieter De
Wagter at Equus (just after the latest TIGA album).
The single Michael Jordan became an instant hit on
national radio. (Studio Brussel, De AFrekening, FM
Brussel etc…) . After that Superlijm played all around
Belgium (Leffinge Leuren, Boomtown, AB, Cactus,
etc…)
2010 marks the recording of their debutalbum, with
producer Arne “Styrofoam” Vanpetegem; The album
got mixed by Paul Mahajen, who worked before on
albums from Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, Tv On The Radio,
The National and Liars among others. First single
“Area 51” is also picked up by the national radio and
expectations fro the release of the debutalbum are
high.

weerhaakjes aan je huid blijven kleven. Net zoals
een hele resem nieuwe lichting Amerikaanse bands,
om er met Vampire Weekend en Wavves maar twee
te noemen, heeft ook Surfer Blood een voorliefde
voor zonnige riffs, besprenkeld met noise, lo-fi en
shoegaze. Referenties naar bands als Weezer, een
cleane Pavement en een opgewekte Posies maar
ook Built To Spill en Teenage Fanclub zijn legio. The
Shins laten ons al geruime tijd op onze honger zitten
maar gelukkig kunnen we nu een tijdje verder met
de heerlijke riffs van Surfer Blood.

Groove of Switch zou je
kunnen kennen als producer
van M.I.A., Björk, Kanye West
of Santigold of als remixer van onder andere The
Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, Lily Allen, P.
Diddy en X-Press 2. Samen met Diplo vormt hij het
producersduo Major Lazer waarmee ze hun
gezamenlijke passie voor dancehall muziek de vrije
loop laten gaan. Op Pukkelpop maakt hij graag tijd
voor een feestelijke, maar stijlvolle dj-set.
Hun in 2008 verschenen
titelloze debuut bezorgde
Tame Impala een instant
fanbase. De ep bevatte vijf,
met prachtige zangharmonieën overgoten
fuzzrockparels en riep vergelijkingen op met zowel
de oude (Cream, Blue Cheer) als de nieuwe
generatie (Dungen, Comets On Fire) psychedelische
rockbands. Voor de opnames van hun debuutalbum
‘Innerspeaker’ verhuisde het jonge viertal, met als
frontman de charismatische Kevin Parker, naar een
boomhut met panoramisch uitzicht over de Indische
Oceaan. Het resultaat laat zich beluisteren als één
kosmische trip en werd einde mei uitgebracht door
het visionaire independent label Modular Records
(Ladyhawke, Cut Copy, Delphic, …).

“Dirty Reggae”, zo wordt het
muzikale stoofpotje van The
Aggrolites wel eens genoemd.
Hun rootssound komt voort uit
twintigers die elkaar leerden
kennen tijdens hun opleiding psychologie aan de
universiteit van Gent. Twee totaal verschillende
karakters die één ding gemeen hadden: hun
ongezonde fascinatie voor mooie lelijkheid. Beiden
deden ervaring op in verschillende cabaretformaties
maar staan sinds november 2006 als duo op de
planken. In mei 2007 wonnen ze de jury- én
publieksprijs op het Cabareteske festival in
Eindhoven en het jaar nadien kaapten ze de
hoofdprijs weg op het prestigieus Leids Cabaret
Festival. Het energieke duo brengt powercabaret met
kloten met hier en daar een krakende noot muziek.
Ze laten een frisse wind in het comedylandschap
omdat zij zich inhoudelijk opmerkbaar onderscheiden
van de hedendaagse thema’s binnen de stand-up en
het cabaret. Geen maatschappijkritiek, politieke
grappen of lachen met bejaarden en
minderheidsgroepen. Zij zoeken hun inspiratie in de
psychologie van de mens en de absurditeit van het
leven zoals het is. Neem een dagdagelijkse
gebeurtenis, zet ze op een podium en plots wordt ze
grappig.
“Er bestaan drie soorten mensen: neuroten,
psychoten en perverten. Neuroten zijn verloren maar
ze doen hun best om er toch nog iets van te maken.
Psychoten waren al lang verloren en blijven door de
mazen van het net van de maatschappij vallen.
Perverten regeren, ze klimmen tot de bovenste sport
van de maatschappelijke mesthoop en overtuigen
met gemak de anderen van hun gelijk. Tot welk van
de drie behoor jij?”

The Black Box Revelation, also
known as the BBR, is a
Belgian garage rock band from
Dilbeek. It was formed in 2005 by vocalist and
guitarist Jan Paternoster and drummer Dries Van
Dijck. The band achieved great reviews with their
debut "Set Your Head On Fire".
Jan Paternoster and Dries Van Dijck, two friends
from Dilbeek, started playing together (with Jan's
brother Tim Paternoster as vocalist and Marquez on
second guitar) as “The Mighty Generators”, at the
respective ages of 12 and 14 years old. It was during
this period that the two of them started jamming
together as well. These jam sessions would lay the
foundation to their new group: The Black Box
Revelation.
In 2006 they arrived second, The Hickey Underworld
took the first spot, in Belgium’s influential Humo's
Rock Rally contest. The Mighty generators made it to
the quarter-finals.

Toen The Flaming Lips in 1999
een eerste maal in de
Pukkelpop Marquee speelde
was de band uit Oklahoma net wereldwijd
doorgebroken met het album ‘The Soft Bulletin’. Zes
jaar eerder had de groep met frontman Wayne
Coyne al een bescheiden hit met ‘She Don’t Use
Jelly’ en waren de bandleden al eens voor
gastrolletjes opgedoken in Beverly Hills 90210 en
Beavis and Butthead. Albumgewijs leverde The
Flaming Lips sinds 1999 het ene meesterwerk na het
andere af. De song ‘Do you realize’ uit ‘Yoshimi
Battles The Pink Robots’ (2002) schopte het zelfs tot
officiële stadshymne van Oklahoma City. Eén van
hun laatste wapenfeiten is de integrale interpretatie
van Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’. Als
vaandeldragers van de moderne psychedelische rock
wordt The Flaming Lips gezien als één van de meest
intrigerende bands van de laatste twintig jaar.
Bovendien blijft het viertal met hun carnavaleske en
uitbundige live shows grenzen verleggen, met een

namen die te pas en te onpas
gebruikt worden om voor een
onbekende groep een
referentiekader te schetsen. In het geval van The
Low Anthem zal het niet lang meer duren vooraleer
de groep zelf als referentieband gebruikt wordt. Voor
wie een wondermooi en tot tranen toe bewogen
moment wil beleven op onze verjaardagseditie
kunnen wij dan ook niet anders dan dit New Yorkse
viertal aanbevelen. The Low Anthem ontstond als
een samenwerking tussen dichter, singer-songwriter,
folk muzikant en schilder Ben Knox Miller en Jeff
Prystowsky, jazz bassist en baseball-rookie. Met hun
eerste twee platen brak het duo nauwelijks potten.
Met het inlijven van de klassiek geschoolde multiinstrumentaliste Jocie Adams vielen de
puzzelstukken uiteindelijk in elkaar, wat resulteerde
in ‘Oh My God, Charlie Darwin’, één van de mooiste
en meest bejubelde platen uit 2009. Ondertussen
werd met Mat Davidson een vierde groepslid ingelijfd
en vatte The Low Anthem de opnames aan voor een
nieuwe plaat die momenteel wordt afgemixt door
Mike Mogis van Monsters Of Folk en Bright Eyes. De
release is voorzien voor september dus ongetwijfeld
al enkele fragmenten live in première op Pukkelpop!
Met hun album ‘The Boxer’
(2007) brak The National
eindelijk door naar een ruimer
publiek. Onder de vleugels van
huisproducer Peter Katis (Interpol, Mercury Rev,
Jónsi,, …) groeide het vijftal uit Cincinatti uit tot één
van de belangrijkste indiebands van dit moment. Hun
nieuwste plaat ‘High Violet’ is (alweer) van een
ongekende schoonheid. Uiterst gedetailleerde
indierocksongs en de verbluffende mix van piano,
gitaren, bas, drums, strijkers en blaasinstrumenten
worden ook nu weer overgoten met een vleugje
americana en de weemoedige baritonstem van
zanger/verteller Matt Berninger. The National staat
voor de derde keer op Pukkelpop. Mis ze ook nu
niet!

Velen dachten dat The Prodigy
na de release van het matige
‘Always Outnumbered Never
Outgunned’ (2004) uitgeteld
tegen het canvas lag. Toch wist de Britse dancesensatie vorig jaar een comeback van formaat te
maken met het verrassend energieke ‘Invaders Must
Die’. De opnames van de plaat verliepen in volledige
samenwerking tussen het trio Liam Howlett, Keith
Flint en MC Maxim Reality, en dit was ook te merken
aan tracks als ‘Omen’, ‘Warriors Dance’ en ‘Take Me
To The Hospital’, stuk voor stuk kolkende
adrenalineshots die perfect aansluiten bij de lange
lijst breakbeat en ravepunk classics als ‘Out of
Space’, ‘Smack My Bitch Up’, ‘Voodoo People’, ‘No
Good (Start the Dance)’ en ‘Firestarter’. Vorig jaar
staken ze de lont in het kruitvat op zowel Rock
Werchter als Vorst National. Dit jaar laten ze het
Pukkelpop feest op vrijdag knallen!
Dé sterren op het titelloze
debuut van The Soft Pack zijn
bassist Dave Lantzman en
drummer Brian Hill. Hoewel
perfect aangevuld door gitarist Matty McLoughlin en
zanger Matt Lamkin vormt de ritmesectie de kern van
de band uit San Diego. Muzikaal sluit The Soft Pack
aan bij de energieke rammelpop zoals die
tegenwoordig uit de States komt overgewaaid. Wie
heimwee heeft naar The Modern Lovers of The
Strokes kan terecht bij The Soft Pack.
The Sore Losers

onlangs een platencontract bij
het Nederlandse Excelsior
Recordings dat eerder al met succes onderdak bood

Rock Rally 2010 trokken zich begin juni samen met
producer Pascal Deweze terug in de GAM studio’s in
het Ardeense Waimes. In het najaar van 2010 zou
hun titelloze debuutalbum moeten verschijnen.

De Zweedse troubadour
Kristian Matsson introduceerde
zich voor het eerst als The
Tallest Man On Earth op het album ‘Shallow Grave’
(2008), waarop hij met zijn gepassioneerd gitaarspel
en zijn schorre zangstem smeekte om te kunnen
verdwijnen in een denkbeeldige wildernis. Ondanks
de gebrekkige distributie van de plaat verspreidde
het verhaal van The Tallest Man zich als een lopend
vuurtje, alsook de vele vergelijkingen met Bob Dylan
en zijn reputatie als bevlogen live performer. Midden
april verscheen ‘The Wild Hunt’, zijn tweede album,
waarop The Tallest Man On Earth aan de hand van
tien perfecte folksongs de draad oppikt waar die met
‘Shallow Grave’ was blijven liggen.

The simple story of two big kids -not really interested

their time playing their guitar and writing songs, a
with a stron rock feel, somewhere between Bob
Dylan, the Libertines or Violent Femmes.
Punk, punker, punkst! De Toy
Dolls, grondleggers van de –

afgezakt naar Kiewit. Sinds 1979 combineren deze
Londenaars punk met humor en steken ze op hun
eigen excentrieke manier de draak met de politiek en
de maatschappij. Hun songs dragen titels als ‘Yul
Brynner Was A Skinhead’, ‘My Girlfriend's Dad's A
Vicar’ en ‘James Bond Lives Down Our Street’, en
daarnaast bevat elk album van The Toy Dolls
minstens één (uptempo) interpretatie van een
bekend nummer. Opperdoll en gitaarvirtuoos Olga
(Michael Alger) draait al meer dan dertig jaar mee
met de band, maar toch blijft The Toy Dolls één van
meest hyperactieve live acts in het punkcircuit. Smile!
You’re on Pukkelpop!
After losing a demo contest on belgian alternative
national radio Pure FM and receiving a true
enthusiastic response, the two boys got more sure of
themselves and decided to show the people what
they are up to. In october 2005 they opened shyly for
Saint Thomas at Brussels Botanique Club. A few
month later, they are back as a support act for
Belgian band Venus and The Tellers are truly
another group, Ben and Charles show the arrogant
talent of the ones that come from nowhere. Okay
from nowhere indeed, but you have to reckon that
they don’t show up holding anything in their hands...
Ben has a voice that gives you thrills as
Charles is taking care of all subtle acoustic
arrangments, the Tellers fire at you with laidback
ballads, melancholy tunes,...beauty.
Their third gig was at the Nuits Botanique festival in
Brussels, they’ll play the Dour festival and a couple
summer gigs around Europe.

tweede album van deze Britse art rockers. In een
interview werd ‘Hidden’ omschreven als "1970, but
also quite 1610, 1950, 1979, 1989, 2005 and 2070”.
Geen paniek, want ‘Hidden’ zit volgestouwd met
fijnzinnige ideeën, originele melodieën, opzwepende
ritmes en een sound waar zelfs Pharell Williams
jaloers op zou zijn. En dat wil wat zeggen.
The xx

Schoonheid herleiden tot zijn
essentie, dat is waar het om
draait. The xx distileert de
indiesound van de Britse
bands uit jaren ‘80 tot slechts het
hoogstnoodzakelijke. Geen enkele riff, beat of
zanglijn is er één te veel, alles past precies en valt
wondermooi op z’n plaats. “The xx heeft een
nagenoeg perfect debuut gemaakt”, schreef Humo bij
het verschijnen van de titelloze plaat in september
vorig jaar. Intussen is de hype-storm wat geluwd en
kan het trio terug op haar ware merites beoordeeld
worden. Wat overblijft is niet minder imposant: een
vroegtijdig rijpe indiepopband met een uitermate
ontwikkeld talent voor schoonheid en uitgepuurde
liedjes.

Thrice is an American posthardcore/experimental rock
band that formed in Irvine,
California in 1998. The lineup

and Riley Breckenridge (drums).
Tinie Tempah is het
pseudoniem van de
tweeëntwintigjarige rapper/MC
Patrick Junior Okogwu uit
Londen. Zijn video voor de promo-single ‘Wifey’ werd
een ware underground hit en leverde hem een
platendeal op met het grote Parlophone/EMI dat
onderdak biedt aan artiesten als Coldplay, Blur, Kylie
Monogue en Lily Allen. ‘The Disc-Overy’ heet zijn
debuutplaat en de release ervan staat gepland voor
augustus. Sinds begin juni ligt ‘Frisky’, zijn nieuwe
single en opvolger van ‘Pass Out’, in de winkel.

In 2000, Thrice signed with Sub City Records and
released two LP's. The first, Identity Crisis (2000),
only received 1.5 stars in the AMG review and little
buzz. The second, The Illusion Of Safety (2002), was
widely acclaimed and received attention from major
record labels. Even though Thrice's music has
always included some metal influences, The Illusion
of Safety contained a heavier metalcore sound. The
album was recorded in Beltsville, Maryland and the
track The Beltsville Crucible reflects this.
In 2003 Thrice signed up with Island Records and
released The Artist In The Ambulance, which
featured more structured songs while keeping true to
their hardcore influences. In 2005 a DVD outlining
their entire career to date was released under the
title If We Could Only See Us Now. It included a CD

Thrice
the first
Alchemy Index, a highly experimental project based
on the four traditional elements (fire, water, earth,
and air), on October 16th 2007. Over the summer
Thrice parted ways with Island records and signed
with Vagrant. The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II - Fire &
Water was released on October 16, 2007, and sold
28,000 copies in its first week. The album consists of
the first two volumes, Fire and Water, and features
12 songs, 6 on each disk. The third and fourth
volumes, Air & Earth were released on April 15,
2008.
Toro y Moi
The "Fire" disc features the heavier post-hardcore
sound traditional Thrice fans will quickly embrace,
harking back to their pre-Vheissu albums. The
"Water" disc, however, is comprised of ambient
songs similar to those found in Vheissu, Thrice's
previous album release. The "Air" disc brings a whole
new element of electronic elements and delayed
guitar riffs to Thrice's sound. In "Earth", much like
Dustin Kensrue's solo album, "Please Come Home",
Thrice introduces an indie-folk sound combining
intricate piano and acoustic guitar.

Smashing Pumpkins en onlangs nog door Enter
Shikari nadat die hun originele supportact Story Of
The Year verstek gaf. Voor de komende maanden
ligt hen nog support-werk te wachten voor The
Gaslight Anthem en, jawel, Blink-182. Live
onderscheidt de pop-punkband uit Glasgow zich door
het aparte accent van vocalist Sam McTrusty, het
straffe drumwerk van Craig Kneale en het feit dat de
band perfect op elkaar is ingespeeld.

Two Door Cinema Club startte

veelbelovende indieband op wiens debuutplaatje

verwonderlijk als je weet dat het album verscheen op
het Franse Kitsuné label dat eerder al de
vernieuwende popmuziek van Klaxons, La Roux en
Hot Chip aan de man bracht. Two Door Cinema Club
heeft alles in huis om het te maken. Zo mocht het
Noord-Ierse trio als opener mee op de Amerikaanse
tour van de Franse poptrots Phoenix. Eind augustus
komen ze maar met één doel naar Hasselt: de
Pukkelpop bezoeker inpakken. Let’s call it a wrap?

die rap combineren met electro en andere genres.
En net als Lily Allen, verwierf de 20-jarige Uffie
bekendheid door haar muziek in de eerste plaats via
haar Myspace te verspreiden. Enkele jaren terug
vormde ze een team met DJ Feadz. Resultaat was
de killertrack ‘Pop The Glock’, een contract bij het
hippe Ed Banger Records en opgemerkte shows op
Pukkelpop. Vanaf half juni zou haar debuut 'Sex
Dreams and Denim Jeans' uit moeten zijn. Daarop
krijgt ze de hulp van haar coole vrienden Feadz, Mr.
Oizo, SebastiAn en Mirwais. Voor haar single ‘A.D.D.
S.U.V.' kan ze rekenen op de assistentie van
niemand minder dan Pharrell Williams.

Wallis Bird
Wallis is a 26 year old Irish
born singer who had an
evident first love for music from
the age of 2 when she got her
first guitar! She has been involved in diverse projects,
musically and otherwise since the age of 11, having
written soundtracks to and acted in short films and
plays. Wallis has been giging on the Irish music
circuit since the age of 17, playing a catalogue of
gigs from tiny, smokie, dim-lit bars to big bright
festivals; all building up her reputation as a confident
performer with songs written in many styles ranging
from folk to rock to jazz to contemporary.

Music Prize organisatie uitgeroepen werd als één
van de beste Ierse albums van 2006. Met ‘Becoming
At the age of 1, Wallis had an accident which cut all
her fingers from her left hand. From this, she then
began to start over with her guitar playing at the age
of 4, but this time she learned to do it the way she is
noted for now...a right hand guitar played upside
down: "Nobody ever showed me how to play the
guitar properly! So I just kept going with it and
developed my own style. I only have 4 fingers, but I
feel like it is my special "mojo" so I'm very proud of
it!"
She began to play with various bands and groups
before going solo. Through music college in
Ballyfermot "rock School" in Dublin, Ireland, she was
given the chance to attend a European music
workshop in 2005 that was to change her life: "When
I got to Hammelburg in Germany, where the
European music workshop was, I thought that it was
going to be a week of drinking and maybe a little
music, I never expected it to turn out the way it did!"

"I was assigned a band and we were thrown in at the
deep end to get as many songs together as possible
to perform a concert at the end of the week. So it
was a total shock for me, I had never worked so hard
and so intensely, but it made me open my eyes to
the possibility of my music, I had never heard it being
played that way, so I just knew that the feeling in my
heart was right- I wanted to follow this band. I felt
right from the start, so now I'm living together with
the band in Germany to be close , and I have no
regrets."
So far things have been going upwards, and the
feeling is right which is evident in the music Wallis
plays to this day, it is more mature, and sure of its
direction. Definitely a sign that you should follow your
heart, even if it means moving to a different country
and leaving Ireland, the country she loves!!!

Al gehoord van chillwave? Wie de allerhipste trends
in muziekland volgt, weet dat Washed Out, samen
met onder andere Memory Tapes en Toro Y Moi
(ook op Pukkelpop), één van de pioniers is van het
genre. Chillwave, vaak ook glo-fi genoemd, is een
relatief nieuw genre dat momenteel hoge toppen
scheert aan de andere kant van de Atlantische
Oceaan, maar ook bij ons meer en meer aan de
oppervlakte komt. De muziek is een kruisbestuiving
van genres, waarbij lome elektronica gemixt wordt
met new wave-achtige vocalen, voorzien van een
extreem zomerse bovenlaag, vaak thuis opgenomen
al dan niet in een eigen home studio. Achter de
naam Washed Out gaat Ernest Greene schuil, een
jonge artiest die heerlijk dromerige synthpop maakt
die je hoofd doet tollen. Wat begon als spielerei op
zijn slaapkamer in het ouderlijk huis, werd al snel
opgepikt door vooraanstaande bloggers (waaronder
Pitchfork) en zorgde ervoor dat na amper één jaar
zijn beide, in beperkte oplage uitgebrachte, ep’s ‘Life
Of Leisure’ en ‘High Times’, nu al collectors items
geworden zijn. Wil je absoluut mee zijn met de
nieuwste trend, mis dan het optreden van Washed
Out zeker niet!

in ‘Babes’. Although that wasn’t technically a focus
available at their college, one could definitely assert
that had it been possible to do so, both Keith and
Chris would have graduated with honors in ‘Babes’.
Not that there was anything ‘honorable’ about the
way the two went about their ‘course work’, as it
were. No, they left a trail of scorched social earth
everywhere they went, everywhere their ‘studies’ took
them. Such was their tendency to end relationships
on a sour note that by junior year they were reduced
to poaching students from a high school ten minutes
down the road – no one at their college would even
consider a romantic entanglement with Keith, much
less with Chris.
Shortly after graduation, in the autumn of 1999, in a
desperate shot at reinvention, Chris and Keith formed
a band. The rest, as they say, happened after that.

On the forthcoming Barbara, W.A.S. recruited Andy
Burrows (former hitter-guy for Razorlight) to drum.
Andy moved to
New York for the summer of 2009 and began work

favourable write ups and reviews of our single 'In The
Night' and as many shows as we'd been able to
persuade promoters to let us play, we were definitely
under the radar.”

The singer admits that the initial pressing of ‘Mirrors’,
at that time a self-released effort, totalled just 500, a
release they hoped would “at least serve as a vehicle
to enable us to get onto more shows and play to
more people.” To support the release, the band
embarked on a self-booked tour around the UK,
playing for whoever would have them.
As the group gathered positive reviews and media
coverage, the support slots they’d aspired began to
come thick and fast, with shows alongside The
Blackout, Lostprophets, Taking Back Sunday and
Fightstar, as well as appearances at the Download
and Sonisphere festivals. By the time August came
around the band found themselves nominated in the

Having maintained total independence with Mirrors,
the band decided to remain unsigned for the release
of their debut album, with the help of the wellrespected distributor PIAS. As Wood explains, “We
are control freaks and like to be completely involved
in every aspect of the band, from merch to website
design and so on. Our independence and hands on
approach is the core of what makes us the band we
are.” He continues, “We are interested in, and are
always working towards, the idea of longevity and an
honest and level connection with fans of our music.
We also wanted to be able to freely write the kind of
music we wanted to write without outside influence.
The way we have operated as a band has worked far
better than we could have ever have ever dreamed
of, in no small part due to the dedicated passionate
group of people we have working along side us, and
we saw no need to change that.”
At the beginning of February 2010, the band headed
into Fortress Studios, London with producer Dan
Weller (who had also recorded Mirrors) to being work
on ‘All Our Kings Are Dead’. “The album as a whole,
is, by some subconscious act, a document of both
where I am at this point in my life, the experiences
I've had on my journey to where I am and who I am
today, and the lessons I've learned,” he confesses.
“Be it from dealing with death (After The War) to
struggling with self worth and uncertainty (Stitches). I
can only write about what is relevant to me, or else it
feels fake. I grew up without my father, and it's only
as I get older that I realise how this has shaped me,
and I in turn realised that in some ways I felt that the
same lack of a traditional role model figure was also
relevant to being a young person in our modern

in eigen land en hun deelname aan het Amerikaanse
luik van de Vans Warped Tour werd een korte
adempauze ingelast. Eind 2009 dook de band
weerom de studio in met als resultaat het
aanstekelijke poppunkalbum ‘Hold Me Down’. Warm

nihilism is not just accepted but more and more
