craftsmen of the late 18th century; in fact, Maggs catalogue
966 states flatly that “he was considered during his day to
be the finest binder in the world.” He came to London from
Germany, along with several countrymen, in order to fill the
need generated by the gentlemanly English fashion of
forming large libraries filled with sumptuous binding,
working at first for the well-respected Baumgarten and then
succeeding him in 1781. One of his binding works priced at
the unheard of sum of 30 guineas, and its reputation
became such that George III insisted upon seeing it.
Moreover, apparently because of the publicity surrounding
his work, the Czarina made persistent efforts to induce
Kalthoeber to come to St. Petersburg.) A fine set.

of Essays, etc. An exceptionally handsome and well-bound
set. Carlyle (1795-1881) was a Scottish writer of satire, an
essayist, historian, and teacher during the Victorian Era.

of both volumes from Charles Fletcher, a local businessman
and collector in the early part of the 20th Century
(Pittsburgh, PA). We imagine the limitation to this set is
exceedingly small. The binder, Whitman Bennett, was also a
published author of works on book collecting and 19th
Century color plate books and was well established as a fine
binder.
