A while back this writer
came across a quote on the
Internet that seemed startling
in its honesty, having come
from a famous economist
who was not known for being a maverick. So influential was this man,
John Maynard Keynes,
that an entire school of
modern thought bears
his name.
Keynes had written “we must pretend to
ourselves and to everyone that fair is foul and foul
is fair; for foul is useful and
fair is not. Avarice and usury
and precaution must be our
gods for a little longer still.
For only they can lead us out
of the tunnel of economic necessity into daylight.”
The quote was verified
by obtaining a book through
the Alberta library system.
The passage is in Keynes’
very last essay, entitled The
Future. It is quite possible
the economist was coming to
terms with his life as he was
about to meet his Maker.
As is oft stated within
Advisor political articles,
people, particularly those at
the highest levels, are often
caught up in ‘damned if you
2006 YZF-R6
do, damned if you don’t’ dynamics. The primary reason
for this is that to some degree
ruthlessness must rule wherever there is not an effective
and transparent government.
In essence, where justice
based human laws do
not hold sway, the laws
of the jungle take over.
Force and deception are
the cardinal virtues of
the latter milieu.
Any political entity
without an overarching government will
tend towards the laws of the
jungle. For example, before
there were nations, city state
components of those future
nations were at constant war.
Life within nation states was
immeasurably more peace(Continued on page 9)

A quiet day at work was interrupted when three masked
bandits burst through the doors of a bank, waving guns and
shouting at the workers and a few customers inside.
The robbers tied and gagged the bank cashier after learning the combination to the safe. They then herded the other
employees and customers into a separate room under guard.
After they rifled the safe and were about to leave, the cashier
made desperate pleading noises through the gag.
Moved by curiosity, one of the burglars loosened the
gag.
“Please,” whispered the cashier, “take the books, too.
They’ll do an audit after the robbery.”

A teacher called upon the classroom to make sentences
with words previously chosen.
The teacher smiled when Pete raised his hand to participate during the challenge of making a sentence with the
words “Defeat,” “Defense,” “Deduct,” and “Detail.” Pete was
one of those students who was deemed a slow learner, but
who was really bored with the pace of learning that was set in
his particular class.
Pete stood thinking for a while, all eyes focused on him
while his classmates awaited his reply.
Smiling, he the proudly said, “Defeat of deduct went over
defense before detail.”

Careful What You Wish For
A man was walking on the beach one day and he found
a bottle half buried in the sand. He decided to open it. Inside
was a genie.
The genie said,” I will grant you three wishes and three
wishes only.”
The man thought about his first wish and decided, “I
think I want 1 million dollars transferred to a Swiss bank
account. POOF!
Next he wished for a Ferrari red in color. POOF! There
was the car sitting in front of him. He asked for his final
wish, “ I wish I was irresistible to women.”
POOF! He turned into a box of chocolates.

However, the larger issue has become how a difference of opinion is handled.
People can disagree in a fair

disagreement over a relatively minor materialistic
matter can escalate where
the higher qualities of civil

virtually guaranteed to occur,

degradation. Of course, it
can be difficult to distinguish
between false rumours and
the free flow of information
outside official communication structures. The latter is
critical to the constitutional
democracy that defines Canada.
One concerned citizen
echoed the sentiment that
there was a ‘cancer’ in the

peated in the mass media, are
often both lumped under the
heading of gossip. The line
between gossip and political
discussion is often blurred,
with it being impossible to
separate the players from the
processes in many cases. A
new study on interpersonal
chemistry showed that gossip
was not so much used to discredit others or to build them
up as the case may be. Instead, it was used to create a
feeling of trust between those
talking about the matter.
As covered in last
month’s Advisor, the Federal
Accountability Act could go
some way in improving our
country’s federal political
structure. At the local level,
the provincial government
has made provision for accountability through regular
town organizational reviews.
The results of the organization review that George
Cuff is currently doing for
Whitecourt could go some
way in healing the rift that
currently divides the town.
However, in the final analysis, it will be up to the citizens
themselves to let bygones
be bygones and move on to
more positive work, which
will no doubt involve future
democratic debates.

Three men were sitting
together bragging about how
they had given their new
wives duties.
Terry had married a
woman from America, and
bragged that he had told his
wife she was going to do all
the dishes and house cleaning that needed done at their
house. He said that it took a
couple days but on the third
day he came home to a clean
house and the dishes were all
washed and put away.
I’m looking forward to another 60 kilometre walk for the
Alberta Cancer Foundation in Edmonton. This year my goal is
to match or exceed the $6,260.00 I raised last year.

bragged that he had given his

Put a book right in the middle of
summer fun
(NC)-Children who don’t
continue to read avidly over the
summer months may experience
a learning loss of 2.4 months, research has found. This statistic
comes as no surprise to teachers,
who spend countless days in September just reviewing concepts,
before they can effectively teach
anything new.
“And parents are intuitively
aware of the learning loss too,”
says Dr. Donna McGhie-Richmond, educational specialist for
Kumon Math and Reading Centres.
A 2003 Kumon/Ipsos Reid survey
revealed that 95 per cent of parents
believe that as much as 20 per cent
of school material will be forgotten over the summer. Dr. McGhieRichmond said that most children
cannot afford this loss, especially
those who struggle with their
schoolwork.

“Reading is one of the simplest, yet most effective ways
to keep the mind sharp,” she explained. “Children become
skilled readers by reading. Do encourage them therefore, to
select a few interesting books for trips
in the car, for days at the cottage, or
for bedtime in their sleeping bags.
Reading is so portable.”
As importantly, reading introduces children to a world full of fascinating topics and the challenge for parents is to find just the right books to
spark their interest. Here’s how, says
Dr. McGhie-Richmond:
• Let your child select the book
to heighten its appeal. Studies have
shown that children choose books
for the same reasons adults do and
that includes the recommendation of
a friend; interest in the topic or story;
a television promotion; interest in the
author; plus the cover and back-cover
appeal.
• Take regular outings to the library or bookstore so you and your
child can explore the world of print.
• Create reading opportunities.
Provide the books, and plan times
when they can read on their own, and times when you can
read together. This is valuable for children of all ages.
• Read aloud to your children. It is the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills needed for
reading success, especially in the early years.
“By reading to our children, we activate their imagination
and interest in a world full of stories,” Dr. McGhie-Richmond
said. “And don’t hesitate to include books that are just a little
beyond their understanding. This will require them to ask
questions and extend their thinking.”

Calling the pot cracked.
An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung
on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck. One
of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect
and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the
long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman
bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course,
the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor
cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it
spoke to the woman one day by the stream. “I am ashamed of
myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out
all the way back to your house.”
The old woman smiled, “Did you notice that there are
flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot’s
side? That’s because I have always known about your flaw, so
I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day
while we walk back, you water them. For two years I have
been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table.
Without you being just the way you are, there would not be
this beauty to grace the house.”
Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it’s the cracks
and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very
interesting and rewarding. You’ve just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them. To all of
you other crackpot people, have a great day and remember to
smell the flowers on your side of the path!

the rule of ruthlessness between nations can only end
with some sort of effective

global level.
In any case, as with all
mainstream
economists,
Keynes was not really writing about science or mathematics, but of political stratagems. For example, Keynes
advocated increased government spending to alleviate
the Great Depression, while
ignoring an obvious mathematical problem. The money
supply to private industry
and individuals had been cut
by 30% during this period,
guaranteeing a prolonged
economic collapse. Econo-
mists Milton Friedman and
Anna Schwartz came clean
on this matter in their treatise
The Monetary History of the
United States. In short, the
Great Depression was one
more case of government
policy creating problems,
and then offering solutions
that would entail more government power over the individual.

the Whitecout and District
Chamber of Commerce’s
control, the 2006 World of
Whitecourt Trade Fair was a
success.
There was a further challenge when the Chamber
briefly became caught up in
the town divide, but it stuck
to its mandate of neutrality
and refused to be drawn into
a debate where it did not have
a mandate from its membership.
The building available
was the Curling Rink, which
held about 40% fewer booths
than the nearby arena. Good
use was made of the parking
lot and the Curling Rink’s
lounge and kitchen facilities
to compensate for the smaller
area.
Next year, it could be
back to the larger arena building, with use being made of
the Curling Rink facilities as
well.
A key factor in the degree of success the Chamber
enjoys in the future will revolve around the reason for
its existence. The Chamber’s
mandate is to be a voice to
government, not of government. In the latter role, it can
only be another layer of bureaucracy, which is the last
thing business, and especially small business, needs. The
good news is that the top of
the Chamber’s organization
chart is the general membership. They can direct the
board as to the policies to follow by attending the monthly
general meetings held at
noon, every second Wednesday at the Travelodge downtown. There is a break for the
months of July and August.
Over the years the Chamber has weathered its share of
criticism, However, the essence of the organization is
that of volunteers giving a lot
of time and effort to pull off
events enjoyed by the entire
town. Despite differences in
opinion, this is something
that should be respected by
Chamber and non-Chamber
members alike.

Alberta, with all its energy riches, is not immune
from the math. In a 2002
article by the Canadian Taxpayer’s Federation we can
read: “If spending on government programs since 1996
had increased every year
to keep pace with Alberta’s
population growth and inflation, spending today would
be $16.3 billion instead of
$19.5 billion. Alberta taxpayers would have an extra

was a step in the right direction, as is the Federal childcare policy. However the
current monetary math will
drag any well-meaning governments into more and more
spending.
Eventually the bubble

interest is exponential in nature, and therefore highly unstable and unsustainable. At
this point, the dynamic starts
all over again. Mainstream
economists refer to this as
the business cycle. A doctor
observing a patient acting in
a similar manner might diagnose them as bulimic.
Next month, part two of
this article will briefly touch
on the effects of our industrial age money system and
politics as usual on our social
systems, the environment
and especially on foreign
countries. This last area of
concern is highlighted with
a view to examining possible
solutions being put forward
by some analysts to prevent a

and Islam. Some have referred to this possibility as a
clash of civilizations. Please

kids at risk for nutritional deficiencies.

JUNE 2006
TRUE . Kids who miss breakfast miss out on needed
nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin D, calcium,
magnesium, riboflavin, folacin, zinc, phosphorus and
iron. What’s more, breakfast skippers don’t make up for
these missing nutrients in other meals throughout the day,
potentially leading to dietary “shortages” or deficiencies.
A nutritious, well-balanced breakfast helps kids reach their
daily quota for the energy, vitamins and minerals they need.
Breakfast eaters, especially those who consume a readyto-eat breakfast cereal, also get more fibre than breakfast
skippers.

Bullying hotline set up
Young people who are struggling with
bullying now have another option for help.
A new 24-hour helpline will provide support and referral for children and youth who
feel they have nowhere else to turn.
The helpline, 1-888-456-2323, is staffed
by counsellors who can provide information
on bullying prevention and intervention,
and refer youth to local counselling and
bullying prevention services. Helpline staff
are trained to identify potentially harmful
situations in need of emergency services.
The helpline is being launched in conjunction with an advertising campaign,
called Stand Up and Stop Bullying. The
campaign encourages youth to intervene in
a safe way when they see someone being
bullied.

Let’s plan
healthier
meals
By Rose Reisman
(NC)-Believe it or not, it
is possible to plan
healthy meals that
your family will
enjoy and that will
not have you in the
kitchen for hours.
As the nationanl
spokesperson for Balanced Living for McCain Foods, I do it
all the time, and so can you. Here is how I do it.
• Plan your shopping in advance by thinking about the
ingredients needed for quick-to-prepare meals like stir fry
dishes, pasta, chili and vegetable burgers.
• Make a list to ensure you have all the essentials when
it’s time to make the meal.
• Use the basic principles from Canada’s Food Guide to
Healthy Eating - this is my “road map” to keep me on track
when it comes to buying healthy choices.
• Take time after shopping to wash fruits and vegetables
before refrigerating them to save time later in the week.
• Do some pre prep the night before or early in the morning. Cutting vegetables, preparing the sauces, precooking the
meat then refrigerating it allows everything to be “ready to
go” for cooking time.
• Try using an indoor grill to quickly cook steaks, chops,
chicken and fish or let a slow cooker make your dinner while
you are out of the house.
• Use frozen vegetables for a real time saver, especially if
you have a microwave oven. Their nutritional value is equal
to (and sometimes superior to) fresh.
• Double up on the recipes. It takes just as much time to
make one Shepherd’s pie or lasagna as it does to make two. I
freeze the extra one for later use.
• When serving your meal, keep portions in mind. Using
your plate as a guide - vegetables should take up about half
and the other half should be split between protein and grains
or starch, like potatoes.
Meal planning is a great opportunity to teach your family
about healthy food choices and meal preparation. If they are
involved in the process they will learn healthy habits that will
serve them for life. More information is available online at
www.livingwell.mccain.ca or www. rosereisman.com.
