It includes fireworks, a children’s costume contest, a parade, and, of course, a pirate invasion. The storyline in 2015 followed Dominique Youx and his krewe defending the beach from invaders set on stealing the city’s jewels – and its mayor. Some 8,000 gold and jewel-colored balls were dropped on the crowd, bands played throughout the weekend and many thousands attended. The upcoming Emerald Coast Cruizin’ (Nov. 9-15) will mark the 11th annual edition of an event that’s become so popular that it now draws thousands of entries of classic cars that go on display. There are more than 100 vendors at the event at Aaron Bessant Park and it culminates with a concert Saturday night, Nov. 14 this year. It’s a family event that includes hot rods, customs cars and trucks that make the trek to Panama City Beach. There are arts and crafts and plenty to do for both adults and children. The Krewe of Dominique continued its 29-year tradition in Bay County with its parades at the Panama city Beach Mardi Gras and Music Festival, which takes place the weekend before Fat Tuesday. Visitors are encouraged to dress up as well for Mardi Gras, from color clothing to “wench garb,” and enjoy the plethora of floats and costume contests while trying to catch some of the multiple tons of beads, stuffed toys and moon pies thrown from the floats. New Year’s Eve Ball Drop — December Another signature event that has grown rapidly in a short period of time is this New Year’s Eve gathering. To welcome in 2015, 10,000 inflated beach balls were dropped during the seventh annual New Year’s Eve Ball Drop at Pier Park. “The event has kind of taken on a life of its own,” Michael Kerrigan, Pier Park director marketing and business development, said before the 2015 event. The annual events starts with a family celebration early in the evening along the boardwalk, one New Year’s Eve countdown at 8 p.m. for the young, fireworks and the release of the beach balls. Then there is more live music and a final countdown leading to midnight as an 800-pound, lighted beach ball descends and fireworks go up. About 40,000 made it there for 2015. Guests have wristbands that feature 10 taste tabs they can redeem for tastings at participating restaurants set up along Pier Park Drive. Wings, lobsters, shrimp and more are featured from area restaurants eager to see if those attending will find the food as delicious as the chefs do. Seabreeze Jazz Festival — April This festival was named a “Top 10 Jazz Festival in the USA” by JazzIZ Magazine and was also nominated as the “Best Jazz Festival” at the Oasis Smooth Jazz Awards. The idea of combing the sugar, soft sands, cool breezes and some of the best jazz artist in the country worked – more than 25,000 attended in 2015. The lineup included names like George Benson, jazz vocalist Al Jarreau and saxophonist David Sanborn. Mark Carter is the event president and general manager. He and his wife, Renee, owners of the jazz station WSBZ-FM, 106.3, started the event and have watched it grow each year with jazz enthusiasts from across the country attending. There might be some disagreement about what is best about it: the music, the atmosphere or the price – it’s free! Guests bring lawn chairs and blankets and their families and chill out under the summer skies as the sun works its way west, dipping out of sight beyond the Gulf of Mexico – the shores of which are within hearing distance. Star Spangled Spectacular — July The Fourth of July on the beach brings lots of choices for folks, so Pier Park put together a series of events to give people a reason to spend at least some of their holiday time there. In conjunction with Panama City Beach and events at other venues, the days’ events culminate with what organizers describe as the “largest fireworks display on the Gulf Coast,” with fireworks going off simultaneously from the City Pier and County Pier at 9 p.m. Before that, the Convention and Visitors Bureau sponsored the Panama City Pops Orchestra performing arrangements of patriotic music in Aaron Bessant Park by Pier Park. Guests were encouraged to bring chairs and blanks and relax. Other events throughout the day aimed to keep everyone busy and make sure the kids were entertained as well.
