The AP Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding
college-level achievement through AP courses and exams with the AP Scholar Awards.
These awards are academic distinctions that students may cite among their credentials on
applications, resumés and so on. Most colleges in the U.S. grant credit for AP scores.
McAllen ISD had 82 AP Scholars, 22 AP Scholars with Honor, and 22 AP Scholars with
Distinction. One of the AP Scholars with Distinction was also named a National AP Scholar,
giving the district 127 AP Scholar titles.

McAllen High Mariachis qualify for state finals
The McAllen High School Mariachi
Oro has qualified for the State
Mariachi Finals for 2016. In the Area
Competition held in early January
in San Antonio, the group received
straight Division 1 Superior Ratings
from all three judges and advanced
to the state finals for the third
consecutive year. In 2014 and 2015,
the McAllen High Mariachi Oro
won state championships. The state
competition will be February 5-7 at
Our Lady of The Lake University in
San Antonio.
“I am exceedingly proud of each and every one of them for their hard work and dedication
over the last few months in preparation for this.” Mariachi Oro Director Alex Treviño said.
Group members are Destiny Negrete, Miguel Maciel, Cristian Contreras, Analee Rodríguez,
Brianna Ramos, Kamryn Ramírez, Alex Treviño, Katherine Pérez, Alan Maciel, Lindsey
Garza, Saúl Ruiz, Neri Fuentes, Christopher Echavarría, Mía Treviño, Perla Alonzo and Darrel
Fuentes.
At a national event last fall, the Mariachi Oro earned second place in the High School
category which included all classifications. Student Kamryn Ramirez became the Vocal
Grand Champion and was crowned with the conference’s most coveted distinction as Best
in the U.S. Mariachi Vocalist. Student Katherine Perez was awarded first place in the High
School Division vocal finalists.

McAllen ISD Superintendent
earns RGV Bilingual Ed Award
McAllen ISD Superintendent Dr. James Ponce received the 2016 Distinguished Bilingual
Educator Honoree Award this month at the Rio Grande Valley-Texas Association for Bilingual
Education (RGV-TABE) Conference.
“This award is given every year to individuals whose hard work and dedication have produced
positive change in the field of bilingual education,” RGV-TABE President Karina Chapa wrote
in a congratulatory letter. “Honorees, like you, are also individuals with a proven trajectory of
supporting and celebrating linguistically diverse children and their families, thus opening doors
and building dreams for them and their communities.”
In recent years, McAllen ISD has expanded its dual language program to encompass all 20 of
its elementary schools. In Middle School, students are given the opportunity to receive Spanish
classes tied to high school credit. In high school, students may take more advanced Spanish
courses, study French or American Sign Language. At McAllen ISD, we celebrate bilingualism
and biliteracy!
SPECIAL NOTE: Dr. Ponce (top, seated) receives a standing ovation from the McAllen ISD Board of Trustees at
its meeting January 11 in McAllen. The ovation was in recognition of his earning the Distinguished Bilingual
Educator Honoree Award. January is also School Board Recognition Month in Texas. The McAllen ISD Board
of Trustees includes Conrado Alvarado (President), Larry Esparza (Vice President), Tony Forina (Secretary),
Johnathan Ball (Trustee), Sam Saldivar Jr. (Trustee), Marco Saurez (Trustee) and Daniel Vela (Trustee).
