ABOUT SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE ®
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen,
that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer.
That promise launched Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and the
global breast cancer movement.
Since 1982, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has led this movement,
funding almost $2 billion in research, advocacy and community
health programs to support women, men and their families in
more than 50 countries around the world.
Thanks to early detection and effective treatment, mortality rates
from breast cancer have declined by 33 percent since 1990 in the
U.S., and the five-year relative survival rate for early-stage breast
cancer (cancer that hasn’t left the breast) is 99 percent today.
Thanks to the generous support of our donors, Komen provided
funds for hundreds of thousands of women to be screened for
breast cancer, and provided financial and social support to breast
cancer survivors and their families through almost 2,000
community health outreach and financial aid programs last year.
Komen has funded more breast cancer research than any other
nonprofit and works every day to ensure that women and men
facing breast cancer have access to quality care and support. We
have far more work to do to ensure that women are educated,
getting screened and have access to quality care for this disease.
Proceeds from Honoring the Promise will go to support programs
that help women and men in the National Capital Area, as well
as Komen’s national research grants programs.

2012 GLOBAL AWARDS OF DISTINCTION
BETTY FORD LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT | SENATOR OLYMPIA SNOWE
With a record of public service spanning nearly 40 years, Senator
Olympia Snowe holds the distinction of being only the fourth woman
in U.S. history to be elected to both the U.S. House of Representatives
and the U.S. Senate, as well as the first woman to serve in both houses
of a state legislature and both houses of Congress.
A tireless advocate in the U.S. Senate on behalf of Maine, Senator
Snowe is the first Republican woman to secure a full-term seat on the
powerful Senate Committee on Finance, and is also the current ranking member and
former chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
Additionally, she sits on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation
and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
Senator Snowe is widely regarded as one of the champions of bridging the partisan
divide to solve the challenges confronting the people of Maine and the nation.
COMMUNITY | MAGGIE DALEY
Award Accepted by RICHARD DALEY
As former first lady of Chicago, Maggie Daley was
one of the city’s leading advocates for children and
youth. She founded After School Matters (ASM), an
organization that offers Chicago teens the opportunity
to participate in high-quality programs that engage
them in positive, meaningful activities after school
and in the summer. The program has become a
national model and the largest initiative of its kind in
the country. Since 1991, ASM has grown from serving
260 teens to providing more than 20,000 program opportunities in the visual arts, spoken
word, sports, music, dance, science, and acting, among others.
In 1989 Ms. Daley helped establish The Frances Xavier Warde School, a school built
upon a values-based foundation with strong academics and serving students of all ethnic,
religious, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. What began as a storefront classroom
of 32 students is now 900 students in preschool through eighth grade at two downtown
campuses.
In 2002 Ms. Daley was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was a tireless supporter and
friend to those individuals living with cancer. She collaborated with Susan G. Komen for
the Cure and the Maggie Daley Center for Women’s Cancer Care located at the Robert H.
Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern Memorial Hospital to ensure her
belief in the promotion of knowledge and inspire those in the medical profession to work
with a sense of true urgency.
Ms. Daley was married for nearly 40 years to former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.
He and their children, Nora, Patrick, Lally, and grandchildren Maggie, Jack, and Kevin
remain active supporters in a number of activities and initiatives that support finding a
cure in honor of their beloved Maggie.
2012 GLOBAL AWARDS OF DISTINCTION
GLOBAL LEADERSHIP
HER EXCELLENCY DR. CHRISTINE KASEBA, FIRST LADY OF ZAMBIA
Dr. Christine Kaseba has been the first lady of Zambia since
September 20, 2011. Prior to that, she was the head of the department of
obstetrics and gynecology at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH)
from 2000 to 2011, where she was a clinician, academician, and authored
several scientific articles. Dr. Kaseba is a leader in the fight to reduce
maternal mortality through the provision of quality obstetric care and
in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. A longtime
activist in the fight against cervical cancer, she was involved with the construction of the
first Cancer Disease Hospital in Lusaka.
Combining her role as first lady and her career as a physician, Dr. Kaseba is driving
women’s health issues to the forefront in Africa. She currently serves as the Chairperson
of the Forum of African First Ladies against breast and cervical cancer. The forum plays
an important advocacy role to raise awareness and promote funding for cervical and breast
cancer control. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health in Zambia, Dr. Kaseba recently
hosted the sixth “Stop Cervical Cancer in Africa Conference,” which focused on HPV
vaccine introduction in African countries as well as on successes and challenges of screening,
treatment and advocacy.
SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL | UMBERTO VERONESI, M.D.
Umberto Veronesi, M.D. is a surgeon who has devoted the greater part
of his professional life to exploring new pathways of research with the
aim of improving the treatment and quality of life of cancer patients.
It was he who, at the National Cancer Institute in Milan, on the basis
of controlled clinical trials, first contributed to the development of the
conservative treatment of breast cancer. He was the first to demonstrate
that in the case of small cancers of the breast it is safe to perform a wide
resection followed by radiotherapy and thus preserve the breast, thereby obviating the mutilating
procedure of mastectomy. More recently he has developed new research using the sentinel
node biopsy procedure to avoid axillary dissection when the lymph nodes are not involved.
In the last 20 years Dr. Veronesi has devoted his interests to breast cancer prevention,
conducting two major randomized studies aimed at reducing the risk of breast cancer in
normal women by means of retinoids and tamoxifen. Very recently he has re-evaluated the
procedures of postoperative radiotherapy after breast conserving surgery, introducing the
technique of intraoperative radiotherapy. By founding the International Melanoma Group
he alerted pathologists and clinicians to the pressing need for international cooperation in
melanoma research and devised and conducted trials which showed that prophylactic
dissection of regional nodes in stage I disease could safely be avoided. Furthermore, he
advocated a conservative approach to melanoma which has been adopted by the World
Health Organization Melanoma Group of which he was chief investigator for 20 years.
Dr. Veronesi has also dedicated his energies to initiating and promoting educational
enterprises for the training of oncologists. In 1982 he founded the European School of
Oncology, which has since become a point of reference throughout Europe and, in
particular, an advisory body for the European community.
2012 GLOBAL AWARDS OF DISTINCTION
Scientific and Medical Award Accepted by
V. CRAIG JORDAN, OBE, PH.D., DSC, F. MED. SCI.
V. Craig Jordan, OBE, Ph.D., DSc, F. Med. Sci. is the scientific director
of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in
Washington, D.C. He is known as “The Father of Tamoxifen,” a
medicine that has improved survivorship of millions of women with
breast cancer. He was the inaugural Brinker International Prize winner
(1992) and was appointed to the Order of the British Empire by Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (2002). At Northwestern University in
Chicago he was the Diana, Princess of Wales, professor of cancer research (1999–04). His
discovery of the new group of medicines called Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators
(SERMs) has revolutionized therapeutics with multi-functional medicines that prevent both
breast cancer and osteoporosis. His work has been recognized with election to the National
Academy of Sciences, an honorary fellowship of the Royal Society of Medicine, and he is
currently president of the Royal Society of Medicine Foundation of North America.
MASTER OF CEREMONIES
BOB SCHIEFFER
2012 marks Bob Schieffer’s 55th year as a reporter and his 43rd year
at CBS News. He is one of the few broadcast or print journalists to
have covered all four major beats in the nation’s capital—the White
House, Pentagon, State Department, and Capitol Hill.
Mr. Schieffer has served as the moderator of Face the Nation, CBS
News’ Sunday public affairs broadcast, since 1991. He anchored the
CBS Evening News from March 2005 to August 2006, and is also CBS
News’ chief Washington correspondent, a post he has held since 1982.
Mr. Schieffer has received virtually every award in broadcast journalism, but feels the
greatest honor was bestowed upon him in 2005 when his alma mater, Texas Christian
University, created the Schieffer School of Journalism.
AWARD PRESENTERS
SUSAN FORD BALES
Susan Ford Bales was raised in Alexandria, Virginia and attended
Holton Arms School and Mount Vernon College, where she studied
photojournalism. Ms.Bales also studied with Ansel Adams and subsequently
worked as a photojournalist for the Associated Press, Newsweek, Money
magazine, Ladies Home Journal, The Topeka Capital-Journal, and the
Omaha Sun. She is the author of two novels set in the White House,
Double Exposure: A First Daughter Mystery and its sequel, Sharp Focus.
During her high school years, Ms. Bales lived in the White House and served as official
White House hostess following her mother’s surgery for breast cancer in 1974. In 1984 she
and her mother helped launch National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Ms. Bales
has served as national spokesperson for breast cancer awareness. Since the founding of the
Betty Ford Center in 1982, Bales worked side by side with her mother on projects at the
Center and has focused her personal efforts on the impact of addiction on the family. She
is particularly active with several programs at the Center, including medical student
training, the Center’s unique children’s program, and special programs for women with
addictive disease.
Ms. Bales was elected to the board of directors of the Betty Ford Center in 1992 and
succeeded her mother as chairman of the board from 2005–2010. Since 1981 she has
served as a trustee of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation. She currently serves as
co-chair of the Foundation’s programs committee. Her work with the Foundation is
centered on its core mission of promoting the ideals of integrity and candor that were the
hallmark of the life and presidency of Gerald R. Ford.
STOCKARD CHANNING
Stockard Channing can currently be seen in the off-Broadway
production Other Desert Cities. Her extensive theater credits include
Pal Joey (Tony Award nomination, Drama Desk nomination), Joe Egg
(Tony Award, Drama Desk nomination), Hapgood (Drama Desk

For Six Degrees of Separation she received an Obie Award and Drama League Award for
Performance of the Year, as well as an Olivier Award nomination when she performed the
play in London. When she recreated her Six Degrees of Separation role for film, she was
nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe. In 2002 Ms. Channing won two Emmy
Awards for her role as First Lady Abby Bartlet on NBC’s The West Wing, and for the role of
Judy Shepard in The Matthew Shepard Story, for which she also received a Screen Actors
Guild Award. She received a 2005 Daytime Emmy Award for her role in Jack.
AWARD PRESENTERS
REPRESENTATIVE JOHN DINGELL
Representative John Dingell is the dean of the House of Representatives.
His first fights were for civil rights, clean water, Medicare, and American
workers’ rights, and he continues to fight for protecting American jobs,
improving the safety of our food and drug supply, strengthening
consumer product safety, implementing pipeline safety measures and
scores more.
An avid conservationist and outdoorsman, Mr. Dingell wrote the
Endangered Species Act, the 1990 Clean Air Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, and
legislation to build North America’s first international wildlife refuge. As a lifetime advocate
for protecting public health, he authored the Affordable Care Act, the Patient’s Bill of
Rights, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, the Mammography Quality Standards
Act, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, the Prescription Drug User Fee Act, and
others. Mr. Dingell continues to be a champion of working across the Congressional aisle.
RICHARD ROUNDTREE
Richard Roundtree has proven his star power in every sense of the
word. As a leading actor and audience favorite over the past 30 years,
he has established himself as a constant presence in the entertainment
industry with a fan base that spans two generations.
After a stint with the Negro Ensemble Theater in New York, Mr.
Roundtree received international fame when Gordon Parks chose him
to star as John Shaft, private detective and super-cop hero in the feature
film Shaft. That role catapulted Mr. Roundtree onto the world stage as one of the hottest new
actors on the scene. From there he went on to star in more than 100 features and television
projects. He recently completed the feature film The Rift and the BET pilot Being Mary Jane,
which has been picked up for a 2013 season. Mr. Roundtree is a 20-year breast cancer survivor.
JACLYN SMITH
For more than 30 years Jaclyn Smith has held the public’s interest as
an award-winning actress, designer, and role model. Ms. Smith has
compiled an impressive filmography of more than 50 films and
television appearances. In 1976 she starred as Kelly Garrett on
Charlie’s Angels. Later, she earned a Golden Globe nomination, and in
1989 she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In
1985 Ms. Smith introduced her apparel and home collections for
Kmart. Since the launch, more than 100 million women have purchased merchandise
bearing her name.
Perhaps it’s her dancer’s sense of balance which keeps the many facets of her life in
harmony. Husband Brad and children Gaston and Spencer Margaret keep her centered
and are her inspiration. “That’s truly where my heart lies.”
SPEAKERS
ERIC BRINKER
Eric Brinker is the son of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Founder and
CEO, Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, and nephew of Susan G. Komen.
Before she died, Susan made Nancy promise that she would do
everything in her power to end breast cancer, and Mr. Brinker grew up
watching (and helping) his mother fulfill that promise through Susan
G. Komen for the Cure, the largest breast cancer organization in the
world. He is often called Komen’s first volunteer.
Today, Mr. Brinker is president and owner of Metro Leasing Company in Peoria,
Illinois, a volunteer with the Peoria Memorial Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure,
and was an original member of the JetBlue Airways marketing team, instrumental in
establishing the airline’s customer service and brand marketing positioning.
NANCY G. BRINKER
Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker is regarded as the leader of the global
breast cancer movement. Her journey began with a simple promise to
her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything
possible to end breast cancer, forever. In one generation, the
organization that bears Susan’s name has changed the world.
After Susan’s death from breast cancer at age 36, Ms. Brinker
founded Susan G. Komen for the Cure in her memory in 1982. She
faced an immediate uphill battle: newspapers balked at printing the words “breast cancer,”
no one talked openly about the disease, few treatment options existed for breast cancer
patients, and limited resources were committed to the disease. In a matter of years, Ms.
Brinker broke the silence around breast cancer, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure is now
the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, committed
to action against breast cancer through research community health, advocacy, and global
programs. To date, the organization has invested almost $2 billion in breast cancer
research, advocacy, and community health programs.
Ms. Brinker’s determination to create a world without breast cancer is matched by her
passion for enlisting every segment of society, from leaders to citizens, to participate in the
battle. In 2009 President Barack Obama honored her with the Presidential Medal of
Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, for this work. The same year she was named
goodwill ambassador for cancer control for the United Nations World Health Organization,
where she continues her mission to put cancer control at the top of the world health
agenda. She previously served as U.S. Chief of Protocol and U.S. Ambassador to Hungary
in the George W. Bush administration. She was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most
Influential People and has received numerous accolades for her work.

PERFORMERS
JORDIN SPARKS
It has been nothing short of a whirlwind: the then youngest-ever winner
of American Idol, Jordin Sparks was just seventeen years old when she
won the title. In the four years that have followed, Ms. Sparks has released
two albums on 19 Recordings/Jive Records. Her self-titled debut went
platinum, selling more than two million copies worldwide. She has toured
with Alicia Keys, The Jonas Brothers, New Kids on the Block/ Backstreet
Boys, and Britney Spears. She performed for President George W. Bush
and President Barack Obama, was chosen for a Got Milk? ad, won two BET Awards, one
American Music Award, one People’s Choice Award, and has been nominated for two MTV

theaters across the U.S.
Next up was Broadway. She played the role of Nina Rosario in the Tony Award-winning
musical In the Heights in the fall of 2010. This year is notable as the year that Ms. Sparks
made her feature film debut as the lead in the Sony Picture film Sparkle, which was released
this past August. The film also stars the late Whitney Houston, Cee Lo Green, and Mike Epps.

B
ob and I first met Nancy Brinker 32 years ago. We all went
on a cruise for the Young Presidents’ Organization and were asked to
make remarks. Nancy spoke eloquently about her sister and the
promise she made to Suzy to do everything in her power to bring an
end to breast cancer. Nancy made it clear that this was to be her
mission throughout her lifetime.
Nancy has indeed honored that promise with unswerving devotion to
her mission, along with perseverance and determination to do all she
can to eradicate this disease for women and men all over the world.
