A Valley With a
Long History
The history and heritage of the Juniata River Valley is traced to the Indians known as the “Ona Jutta
Hage,” the people of the Standing Stone, known today as the “Juniatas.” Shortly following the arrival
of the earliest traders, the Juniatas were vanquished in a war with the Mohawks. This opened the
doors to early white settlers who poured into the region, only to be driven away during the French
and Indian War. Following the war, many returned and thus Mifflin County was established in 1789.
The Juniata County area separated and became known as Juniata County in 1831.
Manufacturing and agricultural industry supported the growth and development of the region. In the
early 1800s the area produced what was reputed to be the finest iron in the world. Forestry became
the support of the thriving iron and leather tanning industries. Dairy, poultry and fruit were the area’s
agricultural staples.
Many historic locations exist and are meccas for visitors to
the region. Examples are the county courthouses in Mifflin
and Juniata Counties; covered bridges in Juniata County,
especially the 278 foot Academia Pomeroy Bridge near Spruce
Hill; The General McCoy House and Museum in Lewistown;
the restored Stone Arch Bridge at the southern entrance to
Lewistown; the Embassy Theater in downtown Lewistown;
the mile and a half restored Pennsylvania Canal at the Locust
Campground outside of Lewistown and the Tuscarora
Academy and Museum near Port Royal.

Education in
the Valley
We are surrounded by educational institutions. Located within easy commuting distance are many
universities: Penn State, Susquehanna, Bucknell and Juniata, plus Harrisburg Area Community College.
In the Lewistown area we offer up to a two-year associate degree program at South Hills School of
Business & Technology, degree courses via Penn State with four classrooms at the Regional Business
Center in downtown Lewistown, a three-year Registered Nurses program at the Lewistown Hospital
and an LPN program at the Juniata-Mifflin Counties Area Vocational Technical School. A brand new
community college, the Tuscarora Regional Community College, is in its infancy serving Mifflin, Juniata,
Huntingdon and Fulton Counties. Although a campus may be years away, affordable course offerings
will be available to residents of the four-county area in a wide variety of locations and subjects.
We are very proud of the public school systems available in the region. Mifflin County is served by
two high schools and Juniata County offers two as well. The counties co-sponsor the Juniata-Mifflin
Counties Area Vocational Technical School.
Private schools to be found in Mifflin County are the Belleville Mennonite School with a full K
through 12 education, Mifflin County Christian Academy providing K through 12 and Sacred Heart
of Jesus with K through 5. In Juniata County the Juniata Mennonite School offers K through 12.

Religion and Faith
Opportunities
Many local residents can trace their ancestors
who came to the area to escape religious persecution. From the conservative Amish,
Mennonites and Brethren; to the Roman
Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists,
Episcopalians, Presbyterians and Baptists; to
the Independent churches, a Hare Krishna
congregation and a Buddhist Monastery, the
Juniata River Valley plays host to people of
all religious persuasions.
The Juniata River
Valley boasts a wide
variety of religious
opportunities. See

Doing Business
in the Valley
Both of our two counties have extremely active and successful Industrial Development Corporations.
The Mifflin County I.D.C. serves as landlord at the Industrial Plaza, leasing space for warehousing or
manufacturing. The Industrial Park is for construction of new facilities. They also offer space at the
Business Center on South Main Street in Lewistown. The MCIDC mission is stated as: “to promote the
growth of employment and income in Mifflin County by using technical and financial resources from
MCIDC and federal, state and local agencies and individuals to encourage and assist business and
industrial formation, retention and expansion.”
Juniata Business & Industry (JBI) states their mission as: “JBI is the County and State-recognized
Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) for Juniata County. The prime mission for JBI is to enhance
the economic and social well-being of Juniata County by fostering, developing and supporting efforts
to provide employment, attract business and industry, and generally to promote the improvement of
the attractiveness of Juniata County while remaining sensitive to the environment and to the retention
of the county’s rural character.” They serve as overseers of the Juniata County Industrial Park.
Lewistown Borough, the largest municipality in the Juniata Valley, likewise
includes the largest business district in the region. Downtown Lewistown,
the County Seat of Mifflin County, lists over 200 businesses, human service
offices and organization headquarters in its registry. The downtown has
undergone improvement in recent years aided by support from Lewistown
as a designated Pennsylvania “Main Street” Community. Following this
positive program lead, efforts are being expanded to an adjoining neighborhood aided through incentives available to the community as an official
Pennsylvania “Elm Street” Community. DuMor, Inc. a local site furnishing
manufacturer provided several benches for this effort.

Keeping It
Healthy
Our largest two-county employer is the Lewistown Hospital. It
is a 139-bed acute care community hospital serving the 70,000
residents of Mifflin and Juniata Counties and members of the
contiguous counties of Centre, Snyder, Perry and Huntingdon.
Established in 1905, the hospital provides inpatient, outpatient,
wellness and community services while employing 1,000 fulltime and part-time employees. The hospital also provides a
medical staff consisting of 128 physicians and allied health
practitioners representing specialties ranging from family medicine internal medicine, and cardiology to infectious disease
and general/cardiovascular surgery.
Geisinger Medical Group has a major presence in both
Mifflin and Juniata Counties. The two-story Geisinger
Medical Group-Lewistown location is an 18-physician practice clinic offering primary care and specialty services.
Geisinger Medical Group-Mifflin, located in Juniata County
along Route 35 at Mifflin, is a three-provider community
practice offering primary care to area residents. Both
clinics offer same day appointments and numerous free
health related events and screenings throughout the year.

Recreation
in the Valley
Any season is the right season to experience the beauty and recreational
opportunities of the Juniata River Valley. Outdoor recreation includes hunting,
fishing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, camping, picnicking, snowmobiling, golfing, miniature golf, gliding and skating. We offer dozens of community parks;
many with swimming, tennis, outdoor basketball, baseball, softball, walking
trails, picnicking, pavilions and biking.
We are home to Reed’s Gap State Park along Honey Creek near Milroy in
Mifflin County. The 220-acre facility offers fishing, swimming, tenting, picnicking and hiking. Just at the border of Mifflin and Huntingdon counties near
Belleville lies Greenwood Furnace State Park. This 423-acre paradise includes
a six-acre lake. They offer campsites for tents and trailers, fishing, hunting,
swimming, picnicking, hiking, a visitor’s center and a rich iron history.
We have two riverside campgrounds with wonderful amenities. Buttonwood
Campground in Juniata County and the Locust Campground in Mifflin County.
Both have excellent websites for more details. Golfing is a popular outdoor
activity in both counties. The Lewistown Country Club is an 18-hole course
with a beautiful two-story clubhouse, complete with grillroom, bar, pro shop,
full banquet facilities and panoramic views. In Juniata County the Lost Creek
Country Club, on Route 35 between Mifflintown and McAlisterville, is an 18hole course along Lost Creek with clubhouse, grill room and pro shop. The
Port Royal exit off of Route 322 offers a deluxe driving range; miniature golf
course and pro shop called the Royal Green Golf Center.

Our region is served by two movie venues.
Miller Cinemas 6 on West Market Street in
Lewistown is a recently renovated theater
with six auditoriums showing first run
movies seven days a week. In Juniata
County just outside of Mifflintown, we
have the Midway Drive-In Theatre, operating seasonally. Our local theater group of
the past twenty-five years is the Stone
Arch Players. They operate out of their
own facility at the Derry Township
Community Park, producing three plays
per season. Due to the size of the theater
and the immense popularity of the group,
they put on each production several times.
Indoor recreation is a year round opportunity offered in Mifflin County in Burnham
at the YMCA. It offers a six-lane Olympic
sized pool, two full sized gyms, two racquetball courts, fitness center, shower
rooms, babysitting, physical therapy, aerobics and a climbing wall. In McAlisterville
in Juniata County, the Fayette Area Lions
Den Rec Center offers a large indoor
sports arena (soccer, basketball, volleyball
and hockey). They also feature a
walking/running track, exercise studio and
a fitness center and free weight room.
The Central PA Clash of the
Cleats Soccer Tournament in
July attracts visitors from all
over the country. Festivals like
Juniata RiverFEST around the
4th of July and the Festival of
Ice in early December promote
family fun and community.

COMMUNITY EVENTS
On the fourth Saturday of April each year, thousands of kids
assemble on the downtown Lewistown streets for a day of free
activities for children. Kid Connection relies on dozens of area
clubs and organizations to sponsor and man booths, providing
games, crafts and activities for the participants.
Each spring on the third weekend in May, the Mifflin-Juniata Arts
Council sponsors a juried two-day Arts Festival in Lewistown at
Rec Park. Vendors from all over the country join dozens of musical
performances, exceptional food offerings and school art displays
for visitors and local residents’ enjoyment.
The Saturday prior to the Fourth of July we draw full attention to the Juniata River with a
RiverFEST celebration on the river and at Victory Park in Lewistown, located on the banks of
the river. The day kicks off with a homemade raft regatta. The rest of the day features the
Juniata River Idol Contest, ten hours of rockin’ live musical performances, dozens of food
stands, a village of craft and merchandise vendors, loads of activities for kids, canoe and kayak
rentals and a magical fireworks display above the river at dusk.
Each September 29th the region celebrates Goose Day. Deeply tied to Saint Michaelmas Day,
residents must eat goose this day to ensure a year of good health and wealth. YBMC, an organization of young adults, sponsors a street fair in downtown Lewistown on either the Saturday
before or after the 29th and the Juniata Valley Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Goose
Day Gala luncheon or dinner featuring roast goose and live entertainment on the 29th.
The first weekend of December signals the start of the three-day Festival of Ice in downtown
Lewistown. Thousands of visitors flock to the streets to watch huge blocks of ice transform
into a crystal fairyland by sculptors using hammers and chisels, chain saws and blow torches.
The event boasts over 40 sculptures, food and craft vendors, horse drawn carriages, and a
visit from Santa. Check out our website for dates, locations and details on these and many
other community celebrations.

BIG VALLEY
During the course of the year, thousands of visitors are
rewarded when they take a journey into a lifestyle time
has left behind. On Route 655, between Reedsville in
Mifflin County and Mill Creek in Huntingdon County, lies
what is commonly referred to by the local population as
the “Big Valley,” reportedly one of the most fertile valleys
in the state. Hundreds of Amish and Mennonites have
purchased farms and call the Big Valley home. These are
true working farms, mostly dairy.
huge Amish livestock auction, indoor restaurant and flea
market and a sprawling outdoor market. You’ll be remiss
if you come without your camera, photo opportunities are
sure to abound! In season the two-county region hosts
several farmers markets, providing locally grown fruit and
produce and home baked goods.
As you travel towards Belleville, west on Route 655, be
sure to take in the parallel Front Mountain and Back
Mountain Roads and look for the handwritten signs at the
entrance to each farmer’s lane. You’ll see the variety of
seasonal fruit, produce, crafts and services each farmer has
to sell. On Wednesdays the roadways are lined with yard
sales, flea markets and shoppers. In Belleville you’ll find a
SHOPPING
Antiques bring many visitors to our area, being a region
settled well over 200 years ago. Attics, cellars, out
buildings and garages continue to supply area dealers
with plenty of inventory. In addition to many owneroperated antique shops, the area boasts several large
co-operative antique centers, representing hundreds of
area dealers. Contact us for details.
Our two-county area has a huge number of locally
owned and operated specialty shops. They offer crafts,
handmade primitive furniture, home décor, gifts, candles,
collectibles, stuffed animals, dolls, yard accessories,
bedding plants and perennials, quilts and even a
winery/vineyard. Traveling around our scenic countryside, you will discover these wonderful, quaint shops.

Getting Around
the Valley
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
invested over $200 million in the past four years in the
highway systems serving the region. This includes a
North Lewistown Bypass and the rebuilding of “the
Narrows,” the two-lane conduit connecting Mifflin and
Juniata Counties. It is now a four lane divided highway. Mifflin and Juniata Counties are now connected
to all the major cities on the east coast via four lane
roadways, plus access to the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
This has brought national attention to our rural region.
Dozens of investors and commercial entities are investigating opportunities for growth in the region, and
many have invested in real estate. Projects and housing
starts are under construction. The area is positioned
for economic growth and development. Local community leadership is taking a pro-active stance. A balance
between growth and preservation is the objective.
Mifflin County is home to 16 municipalities and
Juniata County has 17. Plans must be approved at the
local level and then by county government.
