RECTOR’S CORNER
Remember the Parable of the Good Samaritan!
I used to work at a social service ministry
called El Buen Samaritano (The Good Samaritan), and so I find the parable fascinating: The frame of the parable is a man who is well
versed in the Torah (Law, a lawyer) who is trying to
prove how smart he is. To Jesus’ answer about the
law, “Love your neighbor” he lays out his test question: “Who is my neighbor?”
The story goes on to be the one most of us know
well: a man on a journey is attacked and robbed by
thieves who take even his clothes and leave him for
dead. A priest comes by, and without checking,
avoids touching the man [touching the dead is
against the Law]. Then a scribe does the same. Finally a “Samaritan”, a man who has no standing in
the Jewish community of that day, an apostate who
believes differently about the Torah, he feels compassion for the one assaulted, and stops and checks
the man. The Samaritan takes him to safety, starting
the healing process, and providing for his expenses.
Then Jesus asks the lawyer, “Who was a neighbor to
the man?” The lawyer answers, “The one who had
compassion on him.” And Jesus retorts “Go and do
likewise.” In other words, go and be compassionate,
go and provide for the hurting, go and BE a neighbor. So the question that begins the parable, “who is
my neighbor” is turned around. “To whom am I a
neighbor?”
Go and do likewise.
Fr. Jaime Case

junio. Clases comienzan en medio de marzo.
pursuing ordination as a deacon. I'm twenty-eight
years old, originally from upstate NY, and happily
married to the Rev. Shelly Fayette (Interim Associate
Rector, St. Paul's, Salem, OR). I grew up in
Mechanicville, NY. My father was a local pastor in
the United Methodist Church, assigned to congregations in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains
and small former factory towns near Albany. My
mother was (and is) a union leader for public employees in New York State. I have an older sister
Kelly who lives in Chicago with her fiancee, Kris.
I went to Fordham, the Jesuit College in New York
City, where I majored in Spanish and politics. I studied abroad in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. My first classes on liberation theology-- taught
by nuns, small farmers, economists, and public housing residents-- had me hooked! I entered Union Theological Seminary right after college, met my sweetheart, got an MA in Biblical Studies, and moved out
west. The first phase of my process (Aspirancy) was
here in Vancouver at Church of the Good Shepherd;
I spent about two years meeting with discernment
groups of lay people and receiving mentoring from
Archdeacon Gen Grewell. I've been blessed by a
warm welcome from St. Luke's ~ San Lucas and look
forward to getting to know you better. I'll be preaching all three services once per month, attending/
assisting with liturgy at our Spanish mass, and
teaching adult education between the 10am and 1pm
services (stop by mine and Fr. Dennis' Lenten class,
"Poverty in the Bible!"). Eventually, I'll also be working to build a relationship between our parish and
the Poverty Initiative (www.povertyinitiative.org)-a grassroots network of religious and community
leaders who are building the movement to end poverty, led by the poor themselves.
NICE TO MEET YOU!
I'm super excited to be with you and look forward to
our good work together. Stop me and say hi sometime (and remind me of your name the first several
times, please)!
Hello St. Luke's ~ San Lucas! I'm thrilled to be spending the next 18 months with you for my fieldeducation as a Postulant to Holy Orders. In case I
haven't met you yet: my name is Aaron Scott and I'm
PS- I'm looking for a small group of volunteers, lay
and ordained, to meet with me once per month. If
you're interested in praying, discerning, questioning,
and listening with regard to my ordination process--

VISITORS’ REPORT FOR 2013
From January through December
For 8 and 10 am services:
Number of Visitors who signed register
(includes children): 67
Number of Visitors from out of town or visiting
family: 13 (4 from Camas)
Vancouver residents who visited: 54
Became members by registering:
Adult: 19, Children: 15
Did not become members:
17 (local residents) 30 (total)
Estimated retention rate of Vancouver residents:
34/54 or 61%
Estimated retention rate of all: 34/67, or 50%.
Note half of all retained are children.
One family of 6 is inactive (in my opinion),
although they did register. They came for baptisms
and never returned.
The people who have not become members are
mostly:
Single (18) or
Couples without children (2)
We have retained by registering and by participation 100% of families with children. Overall, St.
Luke’s ~ San Lucas has a significant number of retentions. These estimates do not include people
who refused to sign our guestbook, many of whom
come only on Christmas Eve and Easter.
Possible strategies:
A visible, active singles ministry to compliment
our family oriented Sunday school offerings.
A dinner for the singles, by invitation of the Rector, with orientation to Parish Life.
Follow up with the one family that had baptisms
and never returned. Fr. Dennis got these people to come in through a visit in the hospital,
and I think he might be ideal to see what we
can do for them.

For 1 pm service:
We have no greeters, register or other way of tracking visitors at 1:00 pm.
Number of persons added as members: 72.
Children: 37. 6 added by baptism.

LEARN ABOUT
THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH!
ON MEMBERSHIP
If you would like to be members of St. Luke’s ~ San
Lucas Episcopal Church, it is pretty easy to do. Just
register your name, any family members you want
to include, and the dates of their baptism. That
would make you a “baptized member.” We recognize most forms of Christian baptism. Baptism is
never repeated, but if you are really unsure about
your baptism, check with the office. If you have never been baptized, call and make an appointment
with the Rector, Jaime Case at 360-696-0181, and he
will help you through it.
If you want to participate in governance and in the
ministries of the church more actively, we invite you
to Confirmation, where you study and prepare for a
liturgy to assert your mature acceptance of the Baptismal Vows in front of one of our Episcopal bishops
and become a “confirmed” member. The duty of all
Christians is to follow Christ; to come together week
by week for corporate worship; and to work, pray,
and give for the spread of the kingdom of God (BCP
p. 856). For Episcopalians and Lutherans who are
already confirmed, just inform the office you want
to transfer your membership from your previous
church, and we will contact them.
We also recognize that you might have been confirmed or made another form of an adult profession
of faith in some other denomination. In that case,
you have done confirmation and it need not be repeated. Instead we invite you to be “received” by an
Episcopal bishop when one visits. This is commonly
referred to as “Reception” as in the bishop recogniz-
For Confirmation or Reception, we offer classes that
try to explain the Episcopal Church’s identity and
traditions, our polity and structure, as well as the
vows and promises that Baptism calls us to live out.
Register for the classes for preparation now: The
Bishop comes on June 7, and classes will start in mid
-March.
Sometimes called inquirers class, this class introduces you
to more about our church, our local parish, our regional
structure, our national and international identity, and
what makes us who we are both in terms of belief and of
practice. Anyone can attend. This class is suitable for preparing for Confirmation, which will take place on June 7
when the Bishop comes.
Classes will be arranged to be most convenient for the
persons who sign up starting in Lent (March). So sign up!
NEXT BAPTISM OPPORTUNITY
The next regular baptism will be Saturday, April 19
during The Great Vigil of Easter and also, Sunday,
April 20, Easter Day. Please contact Fr. Jaime if you
or a family member wants to be baptized.
LENTEN SERIES
Poverty In the Bible:
What does the bible teach us about poverty? Though
many of us rely on a one-line answer ("The poor will
be with you always!"), there is a breadth and depth
of scriptural teachings on poverty that we rarely address. In this Lenten class we'll touch on several
different passages from Genesis to the Epistles, exploring what the bible has to teach us about poverty's root causes and how we are called to respond
as faithful people. No homework, we promise! Come for the whole series or drop by when you
can, and bring any version of the Bible you
want. Led by Fr. Dennis and Aaron Scott (our new
postulant) Watch for date and time information!

TAIZÉ
The Taizé service combines
readings, chant-like songs,
silence, soft light and a
unique chancel display in the
Chapel of the Blessed
Sacrament.
Saturday, February 15
at 6:00 pm:
Come and enjoy this
unique service.
Music for February will be front-end-loaded with a
special Jazz Vespers service on the first day of the
month. We will have not one but two special
guests. Oregon Jazz Hall of Fame member Mike
Horsfall returns with his vibraphone to give us a
little appetizer for the Portland Jazz Festival that
arrives later in the month. He will also play the
piano for the service, leading our “house band” of
Karyn Slanina, cantor, and Laurent Nickel,
bass. Our second guest will be Catón Lyles, a vibrant and versatile percussionist who has taught at
PSU and the Vancouver School of the Arts just
down the street. He will help us usher in Black
History month. Look for an earful of Catón’s joyful
drumming on YouTube. This is a Jazz Vespers service you will not want to miss. Plan to attend and
bring your friends and neighbors on Saturday, February 1st. The music begins ten minutes before the
6 PM ecumenical service, which consists of prayers,
psalms, a reading, and lots of singing, framed by
instrumental jazz standards.
The following morning is the February 2nd feast of
Candlemas, not to be confused with Candlemass,
the Swedish doom metal band. Candlemas, depicted by many sacred artists through the centuries,
recalls the interesting story of the Presentation of
Jesus in the temple forty days after his birth. Mary
and Joseph are too poor to afford the sacrifice of a
lamb and must be content with two turtledoves. They meet two prophets, Anna and Simeon, who foretell great but disturbing things for the
Christ child. Simeon is the author of one of the
more prominent canticles in the hymnal, the Nunc
Dimittis: “Lord, you now have set your servant free
to go in peace, as you have promised, for these eyes
of mine have seen the Savior, whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A light to enlighten
the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.”
Musical settings of that text abound, usually using
the familiar language of Rite I. The choir will sing
a Nunc Dimitis by Ralph Vaughan-Williams. Many
Anglican composers have set this canticle along
with the Magnificat as a matched set for matins,
known informally as the “Mag and Nunc.” Febru-

THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
ary 2nd also offers a musical alternative to the Super
Bowl. You can hear three free hours of Bach, courtesy of the American Guild of Organists, at St.
James Lutheran Church in Portland. The Bach-athon begins at 2 PM and will feature a newly purchased 3-rank portative organ built by Richard
Bond, who installed the organ here at St. Luke’s
back in 1985. Since the 175 lb. organ is portable,
look for it to appear some day at St. Luke’s! For
those of you who, like me, prefer the best of both
worlds, you can hear a few familiar Bach-lovers
play early on and catch the 3:30 kick-off. Go, Seahawks!
With such a good musical start to the
month, many other good things could
happen. Stay tuned!

Out Into The World
Dear Friends at St. Luke's ~ San Lucas,
Thank you for your continuing prayer, kindness,
and concrete help for our neighbors through Babies
In Need. It is all important: your $35 monthly outreach pledge, your gently used and new baby
clothes, your beautiful hand-made gifts, and your
most recent gift of printing our new Walk into Prayer
booklets for every layette gift pack. It is lovely to
bring the paper and have Kris turn it into prayer
booklets using your state-of-the-art copy machine! Your own Ebie Mountford was one of the
creators of this hands-on booklet that introduces many kinds of prayer for parents and children. There are booklets on your literature table if
you'd like to see one.

WINTER HOSPITALITY OVERFLOW
St. Luke ~ San Lucas

February 9 - 16
The WHO season is just past the midway point and
has been going well. We have been fortunate that
we have had little rain so far but on the other hand
we have has some unseasonably cold weather. It is
very hard to image what it must be like to not have
a roof to sleep under each night.
This year St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas will be hosting the
men’s shelter at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church during
the week of February 9 - 16. I am so thankful for all
who have signed up to host a shift. We do, however, have 20 open shifts still to fill. If you have not yet
signed up or would be willing to take another shift
please see me see me either after the 8 AM or 10
AM services. It is a gift to be able to
help with this incredibly important
ministry. You will receive far more
than you give.

CHANGES
We ended the year with a deficit budget by $3,180.
We should all know that a budget is a plan that is
modified as needs arise during the year. The Vestry,
Rector and Treasurer were well aware of circumstances that are the basis of the deficit. It should also be known that when several parishioners heard
Fr. Case speak about a potential deficit in late November and again in early December, several parishioners responded with their pocketbooks to reduce the potential loss of revenue. The small yearend deficit will be handled through available cash
and will not impact our plans for 2014.
Additional Comments:
The 2014 budget aligns with known resources and
expenses. All things being equal, we would expect
to end next year in the black.

Revenues: Actual revenues at the end of 2013 year
were less than promised coming in at minus
$3,180.
Expenses: Overall expenses at the end of the 2013
were exactly in line with budget expectations!
HOW DO PEOPLE FIND US? According to our
newest members, checking our website, word-ofmouth, and driving past the church were the most
common methods.
GROWTH MODE: Of 67 persons who signed our
guest book last year, 34 (19 adults, 15 children) have
joined the parish. This is a very encouraging sign.
FOSSIL FUEL RESOLUTION: Diocesan Convention approved a resolution to remove fossil-fuelrelated stocks from the Diocesan Investment Fund
(DIF). The diocesan board of directors then authorized an advisory vote regarding the resolution. Our
Vestry agrees that those stocks should be removed.
To avoid sudden economic disruption, however,
the Vestry recommends that divesting be done over
several years.
DEACON-IN –TRAINING: Bishop Rickel has assigned Aaron Scott to St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas as she
THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
progresses toward ordination as a deacon. The process typically takes a couple of years. Please welcome her to our parish family. Aaron joins Donna
Greene and Vera Oser, who are also preparing for
the diaconate. Aaron speaks Spanish, which will be
helpful at the 1PM service. Her ministry will help us
connect more effectively to the poor and needy in
our area.
MUSICAL ROOMS: Remodeling will be complex
for a while. The copier room will become a usedclothing closet and space for a handicappedaccessible lift. The copier will move into the Acolyte
Robing Room. Acolytes will then change in a repurposed Education Wing office. The remodel will go
out for bids soon and start right after Easter. (Please
pray it will be done by Advent.)
HELP WANTED: Volunteers are needed to distribute used clothing and to fill and distribute food bags
on weekdays. Please call the church office if you can
help. Expanding the narthex and adding a new exit
from the nave will alter the church’s exterior. If you
would like to help plan new landscaping, please let
Dena Cassidy or Bob Hiltz know.
THREE CHEERS! To our Thursday Crew, whose
members put in nearly 2,000 hours of volunteer time
last year keeping our buildings and grounds safe
and in working order.
AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR
(AED): This life-saving device costs about $1,400.
So far, we have raised nearly $600. When purchased,
the AED will be stored in a secure location. Clergy,
staff, ushers, and greeters will be trained to use it.
PARISH BY-LAWS: This may be the year to dust
them off and see if they need to be updated.

We cannot sell some items so please no stuffed furniture, no refrigerators, no washers, no dryers, no
mattresses, no baby cribs, no child car seats, no TVs,
no VCRs. – they do not sell, Goodwill will not take
them and we have to throw them away. We can
recycle metal appliances including
hot water heaters and there are some
people who need working appliances
so contact the church before you
throw away working appliances.

AED EQUIPMENT FUNDING
Nearly ½ way to funding for an AED
St. Luke’s – San Lucas is nearly half to our goal for
purchasing an Automatic External Defibrillator
(AED) to have available in our parish. In December
a raffle for a Nook e-reader along with donations
brought in $573 toward our goal of $1400. We are
seeking additional donations toward the AED

purchase. Dr. Jim Scarborough will provide medical direction for the program and Mike Morrison
RN will maintain and help with on going education
for CPR and use of the AED. We look forward to
beginning CPR classes as soon as we are ready to
place the AED in our building. Donations are
WELCOME.
“DALLE DE VERRE”
Unless you know French, you may be wondering
what those words are doing in a church newsletter.
In French, they mean “slab of glass”, and it is pronounced, well, ask someone who speaks French.
For St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas it means the style of
glass used in 19 windows in the church Sanctuary,
Columbarium, Bell Tower, and Chapel of the Holy
Spirit. The style of window art is in contrast to the
more traditional painted glass, of which we also
have eight beautiful examples in the Chapel of the
Blessed Sacrament.
Dalle de Verre is created by first taking slabs of colored glass, about 1 1/4” thick (compared to 1/4”
thick for the painted glass) and breaking them with
a carbon mallet or cutting with a saw. The edges
are purposefully left chipped and jagged. Further
faceting of the piece may be done to increase its refraction and reflection in the overall artwork. The
pieces are laid on a bed of sand, and concrete or
epoxy is placed between each piece in a frame and
allowed to set.
The St. Francis window in the Columbarium has
used this concrete as a sort of ‘negative space’ in
the artistic expression of the window, blocking
light, resulting in a black, non-transparent area.
The use of the thicker glass produces deeper color
effects, particularly when illuminated by bright
light. The faceting makes the colors come alive, and
for our windows, expresses religious statements
more strongly. The colors often change shades as
the amount or type of light coming in the window
changes. The window style also offers very good
acoustic attenuation to the Sanctuary.
We have the benefit of having our Dalle de Verre
windows designed by two of the best such artists in
the art world, Gabriel Loire and his son Jacques.
Gabriel’s work is famous, installed in over 450 sites
around the world. St. Luke’s was one of his earlier
installations, with 16 windows starting in 1956
through 1968, with the final 3 windows designed in
1998 by his son Jacques.
Gabriel had often expressed the view, "La paix
donne la joie" ("Peace gives joy") and particularly
liked working with shades of blue, which he said
represented to him the color of peace. Look at our
windows!

St. Luke’s – San Lucas is a bilingual Episcopal Church serving Vancouver and Southwest Washington since 1853.
Our vision is to answer God’s call to be an Anglo-Hispanic faith community that works together to share the love of
Christ. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, our mission is to extend hospitality to all, to respond to human need
through service, and to grow in faith together.
