Dear brothers and sisters,
L
ast Wednesday, Lent began with the Rite of Ashes, and the first Sunday
of this liturgical time makes reference to the 40 days Jesus spent in the
desert, after his baptism in the Jordan River. In the Gospel, St. Mark
writes: “The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in
the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the
angels ministered to him” (1,12-13). With these simple words, the Evangelist describes the test voluntarily faced by Jesus, before beginning his Messianic mission. It is a test in which the Lord leaves victorious and that prepares Him to announce the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. He, in those 40 days of solitude,
confronted Satan “in close combat,” He unmasks his temptations and conquers
him. And through Him, we have all conquered but we must protect this victory
in our daily lives.
The Church reminds us of that mystery at the beginning of Lent, so that it may
give us the perspective and the meaning of this time, which is a time of combat.
Lent is time of combat! A spiritual combat against the spirit of evil. And while we
cross the Lenten “desert,” we have our gaze fixed upon Easter, which is the definitive victory of Jesus against the Evil One, against sin and against death. This is
the meaning of Lent: to place ourselves decisively on the path of Jesus, the road
that leads to life. To look at Jesus. Look at what Jesus has done and go with Him.
This path of Jesus passes through the desert. The desert is the place where the
voice of God and the voice of the tempter can be heard. In the noise, in the confusion, this cannot be done; only superficial voices can be heard. Instead we can
go deeper in the desert, where our destiny is truly played out, life or death. And
how do we hear the voice of God? We hear it in his Word. For this reason, it is
important to know Scripture, because otherwise we do not know how to respond
to the attacks of the evil one. And here
I would like to return to my advice of
reading the Gospel every day. Read
the Gospel every day! Meditate on it
for a little while, for 10 minutes. And
also to carry it with you in your pocket
or your purse. But always have the
Gospel in hand. The Lenten desert
helps us to say no to worldliness, to
the “idols,” it helps us to make courageous choices in accordance with the
Gospel and to strengthen solidarity
among the brothers.
Now let us enter into the desert without fear, because we are not alone: we are
with Jesus, with the Father and with the Holy Spirit. In fact, as it was for Jesus, it
is the Holy Spirit who guides us on the Lenten path; that same Spirit that descended upon Jesus and that has been given to us in Baptism.
Lent, therefore is an appropriate time that should lead us to be ever more aware
of how much the Holy Spirit, received in Baptism, has worked and can work in
us. And in the end of the Lenten itinerary, in the Easter Vigil, we can renew with
greater awareness the Baptismal covenant and the commitments that flow from
it.

Lenten Guidelines
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days
of fast and abstinence.
Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.
Lent is a penitential season so religious practices
and devotion such as daily Mass, Confession, the
Stations of the Cross, works of charity and justice,
and acts of self-denial are highly encouraged.
Fasting: On days of fast, those 18 years or older
are allowed one full meal. Two other meals sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to
one’s own needs. Those individuals in poor health or
over the age of 60 years are dispensed from this obligation.
Abstinence: On days of fast and abstinence, those
over the age of 14 should abstain from consuming
meat. Individuals who are in poor health are dispensed from this obligation.
The Knights of Columbus
have fired up the fryers for their
famous fish dinners. This year we
have once again expanded the
menu to include fried and baked
fish, fried shrimp, mac and cheese,
pizza, onion rings, hush puppies, and salmon salad.
Two new items this year will be fish tacos and a 10
piece spicy nugget appetizer. This years’ proceeds
will be benefiting Katy area charities, Seminarian
and youth scholarships.
We would like to show our appreciation for
all the church employees and all the Bingo workers
by offering one dollar off your meal. Just tell the
cashiers you work for the church or work Bingo and
receive your dollar off. Thank you for all the hard
work you do. This offer is good for March 6th.
Dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and
once again you can dine in at the PAC center or
drive-thru at the west end of the PAC center.

Arland K Nichols is the founding President of the
John Paul II Foundation for Life and Family. He
earned a Master of Divinity from the University of
Saint Thomas Graduate School of Theology. He
formerly served as the Director of Education and
Evangelization for Human Life International. Prior to
this he was Director of Campus Ministry and instructor of morality and bioethics at Pope John XXIII High
School. Mr. Nichols is a highly regarded writer and
popular speaker.

Vocations Corner
In response to our Holy Father’s call for
prayer during the Year of Consecrated Religious
Life, we ask that you join us in praying
the rosary weekly before the Blessed
Sacrament at 4:00 p.m. every Tuesday
in the chapel, organized and led by
Epiphany’s Vocations Committee.
During Lent, we can pray more fervently for our pope, bishops, and priests and for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. Join

In the 1560s, the Council of Trent
attempted to standardize the widely variant customs for the pastoral care of the sick and dying. We had inherited a practice called “extreme unction,”
from the Latin words meaning anointing at the point of death. The deeper tradition, however, is about
the prayer of faith that will heal and restore the sick person, and is straight from the Letter of
James. The Fathers went back to the beginning, and while not discarding the “extreme unction” name,
made a plea for the proper use of this sacrament. As soon as a person is in danger of death from sickness or old age, they reasoned, the time for the sacrament had already arrived.
As a result of this desire, the next ritual text for anointing contained an innovation: a rite for visiting the sick that included readings from scripture, psalms, and prayers. Old customs fade slowly, however, and the quality of pastoral care languished for centuries while people delayed the celebration of
a consoling and effective sacrament, sometimes missing the opportunity completely. A priest ministering to a dying and unconscious patient alone in a room has never been the desire of the Church. Our
