The small camps and lodges that form the backbone

that saturation point had been reached. The vast
majority of these new camps and lodges are at the
exclusive end of the market.
The coast, meanwhile, remains reliant on air

Kenyan Coast
Enduring appeal
of the coast
T
here’s no denying it. It has been a tough
couple of years at the coast for the vitally
important tourism sector, but this has not
dampened the enthusiasm of local hoteliers who
are now seeing a long-awaited resurgence in visitor
numbers.
Heavily dependent on regular air charters from
Europe, the coast has traditionally been at the mercy
of decisions made far away. This is slowly changing
due to growing local affluence as more and more
Kenyans take vacations at the coast, together with an
increase in independent travellers, especially at the
top and bottom ends of the market.
As in the past, problems in 2013 impacting competitor
destinations have helped increase the number of
visitors to the Kenyan coast – and what a coast it
is. In fact, Kenya has a coastline stretching
450 km from north to south and most
of this beautiful coastline is made
