I have always wanted to know more, to
understand more… about everything. I have
sought to know the hearts and minds of human
beings. Why we are who we are. I have sought to
understand what motivates our thoughts and
actions, both good and bad. I have sought to
know the nature and heart of God—to understand
why God created us and this world, what God
wants us to do and be, what motivates God to
love, forgive us, and renew us in the face of our
rebelliousness and sinfulness.
I have sought to increase knowledge and
understanding of these things—God, human
nature and the world—through books, school,
retreats, bible studies, life experiences, travel,
and countless discussions with teachers, friends,
family, strangers, colleagues, church members,
and more. I believed (hoped) that increased
knowledge and understanding would make me a
person of deep wisdom. Hmm…..
The book of Proverbs talks a lot about wisdom.
Chapters 8 and 9 are some of the most profound
teachings about wisdom in the Bible. A voice
identified as Woman Wisdom calls out to the
people, exhorting them/us to listen up and pay
attention to “knowledge.” Yet, she isn’t referring
to knowledge and understanding acquired
through academia or even life experience. Here
Woman Wisdom is speaking about a moral,
emotional and spiritual intelligence. In Proverbs
9:10, she says, “The fear of the Lord is the
beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy
One is understanding.”
This is not a call to be afraid of God or to live in
terror of God. Rather, Woman Wisdom is calling
us to live in awe, in love of God—the Creator,
Savior, and Sustainer of all things, of all life.
Woman Wisdom calls us to walk humbly with the
Lord who saves us with self-giving love and
grace. Woman Wisdom calls us to see within our
very depths what life is like when we walk away
from or apart from God and what life is like when
we walk with God. The wise man or woman walks
with God.
Seeking knowledge and understanding of the
world and its mysteries is a fine and noble pursuit.
Yet, I think true wisdom comes not from how
much “book or life-learning” we can acquire. True
wisdom comes from knowing and understanding
that God is at the center of all things, God is the
source of all life. In God, we have our being; we
move, live, and breathe by the power and will of
the Holy One. I think when we perceive that
Emmanuel is indeed by our side, we can move,
live, and breathe more securely and more joyfully
amidst life’s daily challenges and trials, worries
and fears.
I have learned a lot in 40 years. (At least, enough
to realize I know less today than I did yesterday or
last week or ten years ago. LOL) In all sincerity, I
truly believe what has made me a wiser person,
what makes us wiser people, is simply this:
knowing and understanding that our lives are
more of all that is good –more grace, compassion,
light, faith, hope, love—walking with God than
they are walking away or apart from God. I have
lived both ways. And I have come to prefer the
former to the latter. How about you???

mystery of life on our planet, and the
bond we have with Earth as our
precious home.
Earth refers to the fragile green blue
planet, that chunk of stardust in the
solar system we now call home. Earth
is also the domain that is filled with
God’s glory, the living presence of God
that appeared on Sinai, in the
tabernacle, and that now permeates
Earth itself (Isaiah 6:3). God’s same
glory is revealed in the Word made
flesh from the Earth and born on planet
Earth (John 1:14).

Lutheran Day at Kennywood is Coming
Mark your calendar, Monday July 18. The day will begin with morning prayer at
11:30 am in Pavilion 5. Tickets will be $22 and must be ordered by June 27. Checks

VBS that we are excited about! We have
changed to an evening VBS. No need
to worry about dinner because we will be
serving a kid-friendly meal for the whole
family at 5:30 pm.
Barnyard Roundup
Jesus Gathers Us Together
July 11 - 15, 2016
5:30 - 8:30 pm
At Barnyard Roundup, kids have fun
being kids as they explore the Bible,
make new friends, sing songs, and learn
how Jesus works through them in their
everyday lives. VBS takes kids out into
the fields to discover five Bible truths
that excite and challenge them. Farmers
of all ages learn that God gives them the
wisdom and the courage to step out in
faith as Jesus works through them—
whether they’re at school, playing with
friends, or helping out at home.
The second change is, Pastor Kara will
be leading adult VBS for ages 12 to 99.
It will provide a deeper understanding of
the same VBS bible accounts that the
children will be learning.
What a wonderful family activity! You
and your child can eat dinner together.
Then, on the way home, you can discuss
what you learned that evening and how
to put it to use in your daily life. Maybe
you will even learn some the those
memorable VBS songs that the kids sing
over and over.

psychology.IcamehomeonSundayafternoonwiththerealizationthatGodcallsall
sortsofpeopletoservethechurchandtheworld,andthethoughtthatmaybeItoo,
wasoneofthosepeoplebeingcalled.
ThatinitialconversationwithPastorRiegel,andthetwodayretreatat
Gettysburglaunchedmetowardseminary,andtowardtheplacewhereIamtoday.But
forasmuchasthatwasapivotalwatershedexperienceindiscerningmysenseofcall,
tosaythatit’swheremypathbeganwouldbetodiscounttheexperiencesthatformed

seminaryandhopefullyjustafewweeksawayfrombeing
ordainedasapastor.

InFebruary,IwasassignedtoservemyVirstcallinthe
AlleghenySynod;ourneighborstotheEastandNorth,the
AlleghenySynodconsistsofover100congregationsinthe
mountainsandvalleysofBedford,Blair,Cambria,Centre,
ClearVield,Huntingdon,andSomersetCounties.TheirBishop,
MichaelRhyne,matchedmewithaparishthathefeltbestaligned
betweenmygiftsandtheirneeds.Overthepastfewmonths,I’ve
interviewedwiththeircallcommittee,preachedandledworship
ata“neutralsite”congregation,andinterviewedwiththechurch
council.Iwon’tbeabletosharethespeciVicsofthecongregation
atthispoint,butIcansaythateachstepofthewayhasbeenvery
positive,reinforcingthebishop’sjudgmentandtheworkofthe
HolySpiritinmatchingmewiththiscongregation.
OnMay21and22,Iwillgettomeetthecongregationasa
whole,andleadworshipbeforetheVinalvoteisconductedfor
themtocallmeastheirpastor.Assumingallgoeswell,Iwillbe
ordainedatthefestivalworshipserviceoftheAlleghenySynod
assembly,June3rdat7pmattheBlairCountyConventionCenter
inAltoona.Thisisanexcitingtime,butalsoatimeinwhichI
appreciateyourprayers.Forthosewhomaybeinterested,Iwill
letPastorKaraandBrendaknowassoonasIcan,sothatmore
detailscanbesharedasthey’reavailable.
Morethananything,Iwanttosaythankyou.Althoughthe
congregationhaschangedalotintheyearssinceIbeganSunday
schoolalmosttwodecadesago,therearestillsomanyfamiliar
facesthathavebeensupportiveofmethroughouttheyears.Even
thenewfacesarepartofinspiringmeandremindingmewhyI
feelcalledtoservethechurchandhelptheGospeltobespreadto

Stories Of Faith In Action
Home away from home
The seeds of Parroquia Emaús, a new
congregation in Racine, Wis., were planted 15
years ago when its partner, Emmaus Evangelical
Lutheran Church, started after-school and
summer camp ministries for children in the
congregation’s inner-city neighborhood.
Participants came from largely working-poor
families where 80 percent of the children live at or
below the poverty line.
When pastor and mission developer Jhon Freddy
Correa was called to start Parroquia Emaús, he
built up the new faith community through
Emmaus’ existing ministries. Through their
children, parents became involved with Correa’s
home Bible studies and prayer groups. Over time,
people asked for a more formal worship
experience, so Correa organized all-Spanish
services on Sundays after Emmaus held its
morning worship.
These services are important to the largely Latino
new start because some Latinos felt rejected in
Racine, Correa said. At Parroquia Emaús,
“Latinos feel included—they feel like family,” he
said. “They feel God’s love, mercy and
forgiveness. They feel listened to. Some felt
rejected [in their community] but now feel at
home.”
As part of its ministry, Parroquia Emaús partners
with two local colleges to provide courses for the
Latino community. The results are paying off.
More than 70 community members worked
through Parroquia Emaús to complete the GED
exam. And the neighborhood ministries for
children continue. About 30 children are enrolled
in the after-school program. About 30 children
attend the congregation’s ve-week summer
camp.

Emmaus’ pastor, Mary Janz, said the new
congregation “has been a huge asset to
Emmaus Lutheran. The kids of Parroquia
Emaús bring a lot of life. The parents are
people of strong faith—to hear their stories is
inspirational.”

Council Notes
At the May 2016 Council meeting, Council
discussed providing a Memorial log focused on
all memorials to date. The log is planned to be
located in the Social Room’s Library.
Baptism of Austin Thompson, grandson of
Anne and Bob Thompson will be Sunday May
22nd. Pastor Randy Gullickson will preside on
May 22nd. Pastor Dennis Orsen will preside on
May 29th. Emergency Pastoral Care coverage
will be provided by Pastor Bob Schaeffer and
Pastor Wayne Gillespie. Contact Brenda at the

Doug Rosensteel gave an update to Council
on the Finance Committee’s activities.
Council approved Lenten coin Folder proceeds
to be given to the World Day of Prayer.
Council is in progress of developing job
descriptions for the various volunteer
positions.
Work continues on a Salem Child protection
policy update. Worship and Music Committee
is evaluating hosting the Uganda Children’s
choir in the future.

“Give until it hurts.”
We’ve heard that again and again from earnest fund raisers trying to pull in
dollars for cancer, scouting, the college of your choice and on and on. But what
does that mean to us as Christians in the 21st century world? In the Old Testament tithing is laid out as part of the law. We are told to give from
the top 10% to support the church. Sure there are the good things that accrue to
those who give as commanded, Remember the widow who was ready to bake a
final meal with her last provisions so that she and her son might face death. But
when she obeyed Elijah and made a meal for him, her provisions never ran out. “…gave according to
their means, and even
beyond their means.”

But in the New Testament we learn of a new paradigm. We see a God who gives to us the ultimate sacrifice of a
Son who dies to take on the sins of a broken world. No longer are we asked to give to satisfy some ancient law. Rather, we are to give in joyful response to the one who gave all for us. No one sets any given percentage.
Rather, we look to the example of the Father who gave us a Son. God isn’t keeping score. Rather He asks that
like the widow who offered two copper pennies, we sacrifice what was first given us and trust in The Lord. As a
church giving back what was first given us, we can feed a hungry world, clothe the naked, teach those yearning
to learn, and provide a warm and welcome place for the widow, the orphan, the stranger. All of this and more
happens when we support the church. It’s what we’re about and we can’t do it without sacrifices of the people
of God.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Lenten Pig Fund. We collected $831.06 to be given to world
hunger. That is 27.7 pigs that will be purchased! Well done good and faithful stewards!
