Term 1 Highlights
Congratulations to all of our school community stakeholders for
another successful start to the school year. With 1 week remaining
in this term there has certainly been plenty happening around
the school in terms of your child’s education. With our inspiring
teachers leading the way each and every day, our 1090 students
have set the tone and laid the foundation for a successful school
year. Once again, we all encourage our children to take
advantage of the many wonderful opportunities that are on offer
at our school.
Many thanks to all for supporting the events that we have had at
the school this term. Our 173 Preps dressed up in full wedding
attire to celebrate Ms Tilley’s Wedding! Miss Tilley will now be
known as Mrs Bunn! The children looked truly amazing on this day.
Congratulations to the Prep team on the wonderful way in which
you have been able to have all 173 Preps so settled into school
life at this stage of the year.
This week the Year 2 team stepped back in time for their Olden
Days unit and every one came dressed for the occasion.
The entire school got behind Crazy Hair day yesterday and with
the crazy winds it certainly made for some crazy hair! Thanks to
everyone for their support of this Junior School council Initiative.
I have been thrilled with the overall effort and attitude of our
senior school students in setting a fine example to our junior
school. Our leadership messages, social responsibility, accepting
responsibility for your actions have been key messages the senior
staff have been trying to impart on our students.
Student leadership has been a real focus throughout the term.
JSC have a real presence, our School House Captains with a
strong link to our War Memorial have made a wonderful
impression and our School Captains/ Vice Captains are all having
a large impact. Student voice is a priority in our school and we
are always seeking feedback form the students to further
improve ways to help with their educational journeys and for
constant individual improvement.
A reminder that term 1 will conclude next Friday 27th March with
an assembly at 1.30pm sharp and a 2.30pm finish. A notice has
been sent home to encourage ALL students to construct their
Easter Bonnet’s for our parade during the assembly. Looking
forward to seeing all the designs and how everyone
encapsulates the spirit.

School Sport Victoria Awards—Outstanding Individual
Community Contribution Award
Last Wednesday was another one of those special moments in the history of Laurimar Primary School.
Linda Mancino was nominated for one of School Sport Victoria’s Highest Honours, The Outstanding
Individual Community Contribution Award. Last Wednesday, Des Chapman and I were present at the
sporting Mecca of the World, The MCG to witness Linda receive this award for her enormous
contribution. We could not think of a more worthy recipient of this award as she epitomises everything
that the award represents. Laurimar Primary School is very lucky to have someone with such a high
level of integrity, pride in the community and positive impact on so many individuals to make a great
impact in their lives. On behalf of our entire school community, congratulations Linda on this
outstanding award. We are all so proud of you and the legacy you have left on our school.
Brick Paver Update
Over the holiday period, our Family name brick pavers will finally be laid under the BBQ/ Gazebo area.
I appreciate everyone’s patience as we have finally had all of the required pavers arrive to complete
the area. On arrival in Term 2, it will be exciting for those students and their families to come to school
and find their piece of history.
For any new families interested in purchasing a paver and staking claim to your own piece of real
estate in the school, we will be running another campaign shortly to give you the opportunity. We
welcome all members of the school and wider community to purchase their own paver/s. More details
to follow about the next round.
2014 School Council AGM
On Monday 23rd March, we will be holding the 2014 School Council AGM from 7pm when I will present
the Annual Report. At the conclusion of this we will hold our first school council meeting for the new
2015 school council members.
100 Years of ANZAC
2015 marks a significant period to commemorate 100 years of ANZAC. With the recent opening of our
very own War Memorial on school grounds, planning is well underway for Doreen/ Laurimar’s very first
Anzac Day Dawn Service. This will be a significant week for our community and I encourage ALL
families to attend this momentous occasion. The service will be held on Saturday 25th April with
assembling from 5.15am (please arrive early for a good spot) and the service commences at 6am.
There will be a traditional ‘Gunfire’ breakfast at the conclusion of the service.
Staffing Announcement
Assistant Principal, Natasha Biddick has been appointed Acting Principal of Lancefield Primary School for
the next 5 months. Mrs Biddick will take up this position effective from next Monday. This is an exciting
opportunity and we wish Mrs Biddick the best of luck in this role over that period. We are currently going
through a process to replace Natasha in an Acting Assistant Principal Role for this period. Details will be
provided in the first newsletter of Term 2.
I want to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support and efforts in helping to make the start
to 2015 an enjoyable one and wish you and your families a terrific and loving Easter Break. If you are
travelling over this period please be safe and we look forward to seeing you all around the school.
Kind Regards,
Jason McBean, Principal
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S COMMENT
It has been an incredible first term of 2015 at
Laurimar Primary School. On the one hand it feels
like we have been here for only five minutes, and
on the other hand it has been an incredibly busy
time, with large events, a new reading and writing
program, deeply engaged students in powerful
learning across the whole school and so many new
students adjusting beautifully to learning at
Laurimar.
Last Friday I had the privilege of accompanying
Mrs Nelson and 26 students to the Melbourne
Exhibition and Convention Centre for the National
Young Leaders Day. These 26 students were our
School, House and Vice Captains and our year 5
and 6 Junior School Council representatives. They
were among 4,500 primary school students at the
event. The students heard a number of inspiring
speakers, including Jessica Gallagher, Mike Martin,
Coen Ashton, Andy Griffiths and Bindi Irwin. The
speakers’ persistence, courage, resilience, passion
and leadership shone through on the day. Every
one of our students returned to school energised,
inspired and passionate about their own
leadership, both at Laurimar Primary School and
beyond. However, the biggest thing that I took
away from the day was the qualities of our young
leaders. Our students were:
went to Polly Woodside last week for an exciting
day of learning. Polly Woodside's resident First
Mate greeted our students as if they were the
new crew engaged to work on the ship. Roles
were assigned including Second Mate, Cook,
Able Bodied Seaman and Ordinary Seaman.
Various essential maritime skills were learned on
deck including ringing the bell, raising the
anchor, scrubbing the decks, keeping watch,
furling a sail and steering the ship. Our students
had a wonderful day. On Tuesday our Year Two
students spent a brilliant day celebrating their
learning from this term. As part of their Back to
the Future unit the students spent time rotating
between eight different activities – from playing
with marbles to having a game of pick up sticks,
the celebration of leisure time and school life,
linked to the students’ investigation into
technologies from the past, present and future
was tremendous. The teachers and students all
looked amazing in their Olden Days costumes as
well. Coming up, I know our Year Five
astronomers are looking forward to their science
expo next week.
As we head towards the end of the term it is
worth noting how far we have come. A few
questions you might ask your child about our
RAW (reading and writing) program.

Incredibly respectful and beautifully behaved

Deeply engaged - they all dutifully filled up
their notebooks with quotes and notes on
leadership
and
about
the
speakers
throughout the day. In the morning and lunch
breaks our students spoke about the inspiring
and exciting speakers, seeking them out for
autographs or to tell them how much they
enjoyed their speeches
What is your class’s reading stamina (how many
minutes)?
Curious,
reflective
and
deeply
contemplative. For many of our students this
day is the start of their leadership journey,
there were many conversations about ‘where
to next?’ I am certain that our student
leaders will continue to learn and grow and
will leave behind them a genuine legacy at
Laurimar Primary School.
I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful break
over the holidays. A big thanks to everyone who
has been riding their bikes and scooters safely
outside of the school grounds and dismounting
from them and using our school grounds safely.

As a new member of our school community I was
so proud to be associated with our students and
our school. Laurimar students bring an amazing
attitude to their learning and to the world.
The last fortnight has seen some amazing
experiences for our students. The Year Four team

LEADER IN ME
In our last ‘Leader In Me’ newsletter
article we introduced you to the 7
Habits. Today we want to take a look
at why it’s worth taking the time to
use the same 7 Habits language at
home and provide you with some ways
you can begin to integrate the 7
Habits at home.
You are your child’s first and best
teacher. You can help your son or
daughter discover the leader within
and prepare for a great life of
contribution to the world. The
absolute best way to reinforce the
importance of the 7 Habits and to
encourage your child to live them is to
model them in your own behaviour.
Look for ways to integrate the 7
Habits into what you are already
doing. Go at a pace that works for you
and your family. You will soon see
improvements as you reap the
benefits of living timeless and
universal principles as a family.
Everyone possesses unique gifts and
talents. Think about what those are
for each of your children and what you
can do to nurture and develop them.
Let’s take a look at ‘Habit 1: Be
Proactive’ and how you can begin to
encourage your child to be more
LAURIMAR LINK, 2015
proactive at home. With your child,
think of age appropriate ideas of how
they can be more proactive at home.
For example, putting their uniform out
before bed so it’s ready for the next
day, packing their school bag, making
their bed, putting their toys away,
making their lunch, putting the bins
out etc.
You could write their goal/s on a piece
of paper; I will be proactive at home
by __________. Display the paper
where your child can see it. Keep
track of how often your child
completes the task. Celebrate
successes using the leader in me
language, for example; “You are so
proactive, I love the way you packed
your own bag this morning.” “I love the
way you tidied up your bedroom
without having to be asked. You’re so
proactive”
‘Habit 2: Begin With The End In Mind’,
means to think about how you would
like something to turn out before
getting started. Have a chat with your
child about some things they have
been trying to learn or would like to
learn. Help them to choose one and
write it down. For example, ‘My end in
mind is to learn how to shoot a goal in
basketball.’ ‘My end in mind is to learn
my magic words.’ ‘My end in mind is to
learn how to play the guitar.’ Place this
goal where your child can see it. Draw 5
to 7 circles (like stepping stones) or
even bars on the page. Have a chat with
your child each day, talk about how
they went with their ‘End in Mind’. If
they actively did something to help
them get closer to achieving their goal
they could colour in a stepping stone or
bar for that day. The aim is to have a
stone or bar coloured in for every day
of the week. Point out to them that if
they do something each day towards
achieving their goal they will get closer
to achieving it.
We look forward to sharing more ways
to integrate the 7 Habits throughout
the year!

LOST PROPERTY COLLECTION DAY
Currently we have an enormous amount of lost property that is
unlabelled, therefore it cannot be returned.
Next Thursday 26th March from 9am until 9.30am we will be
holding a lost property collection morning outside the staffroom.
If you have lost an item of clothing which has not been returned
to you, please see Kate or Claudia on Thursday and they may be
able to reunite you with your lost clothing!
CANTEEN NEWS
What a wonderful 1st term I've had in the Laurimar Primary School Canteen!
I would love to thank my 2 Assistants Mel & Lois and all the wonderful volunteers (parents,
grandparents, teachers and students!!) that have helped us out over the course of this term.
The students here are a great group, well-mannered and it is a pleasure to feed them all. I've
had some entertaining visits from some talented students who love to sing and dance….a few
down balls have made their way through the open windows too and the beautiful Prep
students who make their way down at lunch to get their treats, they all make my/our days very
enjoyable.
To ensure that our canteen remains a profitable venture we do rely on volunteers to help out
with processing orders, packing lunches and window sales, if you are able to spare some time
we'd love to meet and get to know you. The children love to see familiar faces in the
canteen :-)
Our busy times when help is always appreciated are:
9:30-10:30 Processing orders
11:00 - 11:30 recess (window sales)
12:30 - 1:10 Packing lunch tubs from
and then lunch window sales from 1:30 - 2.15
And my last note If your child suffers from Anaphylaxis/Allergies or suffers Intolerances to foods
please ensure that you keep your munch monitor account, Kylie (School Nurse) & Myself
updated with the required information.

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT
Hello Laurimar,
Well, well, well. It's great to see that nothing has changed over the years with our
Sustainable Transport Program. It was fantastic to be back witnessing the program in its
full flight. What a wonderful way to kick off our 1st Walk2School Day for the year!
Unfortunately, the weather wasn't perfect which seems to be the norm in Laurimar,
however we all soldiered on to school in the chilly windy conditions and enjoyed a very
energetic assembly by the students, staff and parents who could attend.
Congratulations to 5D with a whopping 95% total of students walking to school. What a
great result! Also, it was amazing to see 75% of the school using sustainable transport to
travel to school on the day.
Ride2School Day
Don't forget that we have a Ride2School Day coming up on Thursday the 26th of March,
once again meeting at our Safe Routes to school. Please ensure you, your bike and
safety gear (helmet) are prepared for the ride to and from school. Lets aim to beat our
Walk2School result. Remember, it still counts as sustainable transport if you walk
to school on a riding day.
Thank again and well done on another safe Walk2School Day.

Here are all of the grades results:
Magic Words in the Junior School
In the Junior School it is important to build a varied and instant knowledge of words.
This is called Sight Words because the children cap'n read them with out having to
'sound them out' .
At LPS we use a program called the Magic Words. The words are coloured coded
according to how often they are seen in written language. In preps we try to read
the words while in grades one and two we read and write the words.
To help you child learn to read and revise the word there are some simple things you
can do.......
1. Write the words on coloured paper - yellow for Golden Words, blue for Blue Words
etc.
2. Use the words to play games TIC TAC TOE, MEMORY
3. Look for the words in take home books and favourite stories.
4. For the active child pin words around the trampoline or on furniture than call out,
"Jump to AND and then hop to YOU."
5. Put cards on the floor. "Who can find a word that stars with the s sound?"
As children become more confident with the words try to put words together to
make a sentence eg. I can see you over there. Which is the green one?
Remember to return to older words as it is important to be able to read them all.
Have fun with your child and encourage and praise them. If you need more ideas or
help come and see me in the prep room.

Spotlight on Social and Emotional Learning
This term in YCDI! we have focused on THE BIG ONE!!! RESILIENCE!!!
What is Resilience? Well, a person who shows resilience is able to do a few things:
Stay calm when ‘bad’ things happen, keeping their feelings at a manageable level,
Behave in a helpful, rather than an unhelpful way when they find themselves getting
upset (angry, down or worried),
Calm down again after getting upset in a reasonable period of time, and
Bounce back to work or to play!
Firstly, it’s important to understand our feelings. What are they? …how do they look, feel
and sound? ….how do we recognise them in ourselves and others? …what situations
and events lead to different emotions?
Next, we need to learn that there are different degrees of emotions. Not just HIGH or
LOW, but variations in between, and we can rate them on a scale which we call the
Emotional Thermometer.
In class we will explore these ideas, as well as common age-related situations that can
lead to our students getting very angry, down or worried.
We will also explore the idea that it is our thinking that leads to different emotions and
degrees of emotions.
Your children will learn a collection of ‘Things to Do’ and ‘Ways to Think’ to help build
their RESILIENCE in order to cope when times are tough!
Recently the Year 2 students have done an experiment with a DUCK and a SPONGE! We
discovered that ducks are ‘waterproof’ and drops of water fall off them…like water off a
duck’s back!! On the other hand, sponges SOAK UP the water until they are full and then
the water drips away (kind of like tears!) We made the link that we (kids and adults) can
choose to be like a duck or a sponge when something ‘bad’ happens to us. (For
example, being left out, when someone says or does something mean, not having
someone to play with…) We can be like a sponge and soak it all up and feel miserable
all day or we can be like a duck…shake it off and get back on with things!
RESILIENCE….what an enormously useful characteristic to develop in our children!!!
That’s all for now! Stay tuned for the next instalment and remember…

it team!
