Dear Friends and Fellow Runners,
I want to extend a warm welcome to the fourteenth annual Lesbian
and Gay Pride Run! I am very excited about the course changes in
both the five mile race and the two mile community challenge. We
want your comments, let us know how you feel about the new start
and finish. Your input will enable us to continue to make this annual
event even better in the future.
I came to Front Runners for the first time on a cold morning (7 degrees below to be exact) in February 1989. It was the last time that
the group was meeting at Jasons prior to our move to Rutgers. I was
greeted warmly at the door by Guy Zelenak ( see more about Guy
later in this program) who remembered that I had been a member for
a year prior to showing up for the first
time . Guy found someone in my pace
range to run with me and introduced me
around . This set the tone for what has
been my Front Runners experience. The
club has provided for me, the most positive social outlet in my life. I have met
many wonderful people, and formed
some of my most treasured friendships
over the past six and a half years . My
experience as Race Director has only
added to the warmth and affection that I
feel for our membership. Anyone that I
have asked to do anything in support of
the race has come through. You will see
many people acknowledged in this program for their individual contributions, but be aware that the team that makes this annual event
happen is FRONT RUNNERS NEW YORK.
Many thanks to our new sponsors this year (in particul ar to Starbucks
Coffee Company, American Express Travel/C arnival Cruise Lines,
and Marc Berkley for providin g the up front money to cover race
expenses), my Race Committee, the New York Road Runners Club,
the New York Parks Department, and to you, the participants, including runners, volunteers and spectators . Have a great time! A line that
I picked up on from previous promotion of the race is "Our race is
always a celebrated kickoff in celebration of Lesbian and Gay Pride
.
weekend in New York City." Believe it!

The Mickey Zacuto Award, in memory of a long-time member of Front
Runners New York, is given to the first Front Runner New York male and
female masters runners (age 40 and up) in the 5-Mile Lesbian and Gay
Pride Run. Mickey Zacuto joined Front Runners in 1983. She ran her first
race in Augu~t, collecting an incredibly ugly brown T-shirt which she wore
with pride long afterwards. She served as the club's newsletter editor and
treasurer (teaching herself everything she needed to know for the latter ;ob
on the spot, and doing a wonderful ;ob at it). She was the general conscience of the club; she was always informed on the issues of the moment,
and invariably had a perspective which she would argue with gusto.
Mickey loved her Front Runner family. Her photo albums were full of Front
Runners-on vacation trips, at holiday dinners, and other special occasions.
As a Front Runner, she participated in the Gay Games in San Francisco and
Vancouver, attended the International FR conventions of Chicago in 1989
and Long Beach in 1992, and marched past the White House in 1987.
Lesbian and Gay Pride Weekend was a festive time for Mickey; in 1988
she served as the Gay Pride Race Director. Mickey felt at home in and with
Front Runners, and cared about every one of us. Mickey died suddenly, in
1993, of meningitis. This award has been endowed by Mickey's family in
gratitude for the love and support that she received from Front Runners
throughout most of her adult life.

During the past year, Front Runners New York suffered the loss
of long-time member Bill Dolan. Bill, who joined Front Runners
in 1982, was an active member of the club for more than thirteen years, even serving a term as Men's Vice President.
Bill has several memorable qualities. He had a fast and sharp
wit, an encyclopedic knowledge of various areas and a generous nature. During his two-year battle with cancer he kept a
schedule that was remarkably vigorous, maintaining a regular
presence at the Saturday runs, working as long as he was physically able, travelling and spending time with friends. He kept
his sense of humor right up to his death on February 23, 1995.
Front Runners New York acknowledges Bill's contributions to the
club and fondly remembers him today, the most important day
of our Front Runner year.
She's smiling

Lesbian ana Gay Pride Run,
Starbucks salutes you.
