U.S. Women's Amateur at Rolling Green
Rolling Green Golf Club Hole #16
By Mike Kern
Rolling Green Golf Club in suburban Philadelphia (Springfield, Delaware County) is celebrating it’s 90th birthday this
year. The William Flynn-design, a Parkland-style course, has
hosted one U.S. Golf Association championship before. That
was in 1976, when when JoAnne Gunderson Carner won her
second U.S. Women’s Open by beating Sandra Palmer by two
shots in an 18-hole playoff.
It was her eighth and final USGA title, the most by any
female.
This August 1-7, the club will once again be hosting a major. Only this time it’s the U.S. Women’s Amateur, which is
one of the oldest on the USGA schedule. It’s been around since
1895. Carner won it five times, second only to six-time champion Glenna
Collette Vare, who back in the 1920s and ‘30s was to the women’s game what
Bobby Jones was to the men.
The defending champion is Arizona native Hannah O’Sullivan, who beat
fellow 17-year-old old Sienna Brooks, a Floridian, 3 and 2 in the final match
last year at Portland (OR) G.C. In May O’Sullivan became the world’s topranked amateur. She’s already made the cut in three LPGA majors.
Six players have won this championship three straight times, including Juli
Inkster. Another seven have managed to at least repeat.
Rolling Green will provide a nice test, especially on the greens, many of
which are three-putts waiting to happen even if you’re careful. Playing from
below the hole is not a bad thing. The par-71 layout will play to 6,259 yards.
Both nines close with a par 5, one measuring 544 and the other 466. Interestingly, the 17th is also a three-shotter of 469. A fourth par 5, No. 7, is 499.
There are five par 3s, ranging from 147 to 195. The shortest par 4 is 340, the
longest 418. And yes, it figures to be hot.
The first two days are stroke-play qualifying to whittle the field from 156
Rolling Green Golf Club Hole #12
to 64. Wednesday is the opening round of match play. On
Thursday there will be two rounds. Friday is the quarterfinals, Saturday the semis and Sunday is the 36-hole finale.
Admission is free, and spectators are encouraged to attend.
If you’ve never experienced match play before, it really is
a different animal. Momentum can literally shift with one
swing. The 2005 U.S. Amateur at Merion was a prime example of that. It’s an exciting format, and one we obviously
don’t see much of any more. But if you’re a fan of the Ryder
Cup, this is similar. The only difference is the players aren’t
competing for their countries or continents. But the prize is
just as cherished. And you might get to see one of the upcoming stars.
“I can’t really describe how good it feels,” O’Sullivan said
after her victory, which not only earned her the Cox Trophy but a whole bunch
of future exemptions. “To be able to come out on top is just incredible. It was
just such a tough match. I feel so blessed.”
She trailed by three holes through 15, but had drawn even eight holes later.
She then took the lead and clinched it by making a 4-foot par putt on the 34th
hole. Now she’s part of history.
This is Pennsylvania’s 85th U.S.G.A championship, and the second of four
conducted in the state this year. The men’s Open was of course held at Oakmont. The Mid-Amateur will be at Stonewall Links (Elverson, Pa.), and the
Women’s Mid-Am at Kawkwa Club in Erie. Both are Sept. 10-15.
The last Women’s Am in the commonwealth was 2004, at Kawkwa. The last
one in the Philly area was the year before that, at Philadelphia Country Club.
That was won by Virada Nirapathpongporn.
Seven other Women Ams have been held in the greater Delaware Valley.
Sunnybook hosted in 1978, Merion four times (1904, ‘09, ‘26 and ‘49),
Whitemarsh Valley in 1934 and Philly C.C. in 1899.

Johnson Takes U.S. Open at Oakmont
In Drama Filled Final Round
Dustin Johnson Tees Off at Oakmont Country Club
By Mike Kern
OAKMONT, Pa. -- Dustin Johnson's talent has never been questioned.
His mind, though, was sometimes quite another matter.
How else do you explain his journey?
As he approached his 32nd birthday, the long-hitting Johnson probably should
have won at least one major before now. Maybe more. By this point he was
pushing Sergio Garcia as the best gofler to still have that kind of hole on his
resume. Or was that Lee Westwood? And like those two, it's not that Johnson
hasn't had his share of openings.
At the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, the South Carolina native had a threestroke lead heading into the final round. On Sunday he made a triple bogey on
the second hole, a double on the third and closed with an 82 that left him tied
for eighth, five behind Graeme McDowell. But Johnson was young, it was his
first time in that kind of spot, so he mostly got a mulligan. As he should have.
Two months later in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, he came to
the 72nd hole tied for first. Then he grounded his club in a fairway bunker
before making his second shot. Twice, actually. He made par but was assessed
a two-shot penalty for the infraction, which kept him out of what would have
been a three-way playoff. So when was the last time that happened?
At the 2011 British Open he was in contention on the final nine when he hit
a 2-iron out of bounds on a par 5. That led to a double bogey on a hole he
should often birdie. He would finish three in back of Darren Clarke.
At last year's U.S. Open at Chambers bay he had a 15-foot downhill birdie
putt on the 72nd hole to win. Then he had a 4-footer coming back to tie Jordan Spieth. Like the first one it missed left, as his family (which included the
Dustin Johnson Holds The Trophy Next to Jack Nicklaus
father of his fiance, Wayne Gretzky) watched from above the green. Does it get
any worse?
A month later at the British Open at St. Andrews he was in front at the halfway
mark. The previous five winners at that venue had all led after 36 holes. He
closed with a pair of 75s.
At the Masters in April he tied for fourth, four behind Danny Willet, who shot
four better than him on Sunday. Johnson double-bogeyed the 71st hole, when
he still had a chance.
It was always something, even off the course.
In July 2014 he announced he was taking the remainder of the season off to
deal with "personal challenges." The next day Golf Magazine reported that
he'd been suspended from the PGA Tour for six months after testing positive
for cocaine, indicating it was his third positive drug test. Tour officials said
Johnson was on voluntary leave.
Still, the rumors persisted. They often do.
At some point you have to put all the scar tissue behind you. It's not what you
accomplish but what you overcome.
At some point, if you give yourself enough chances it's probably going to be
your time. Unless maybe you're Westwood. Or is that Garcia? Oakmont wasn't
Oakmont, not after Thursday's rainfall changed the complexion of what was
supposed to be one of the hardest courses ever to host the season's second
major. It's still Oakmont. And it's still the national championship. And by
the way, it was announced during the tournamen that it’ll be hosting again in
2025, which will extend its record to 10.
As Phil Mickelson stressed before it started, the details don't matter. Only the

Crystal Springs Resort, in the Mtns. of N.J.
Is One of America’s Great Luxury Getaways
Crystal Springs Resort Wild Turkey Course
By Eddie Caiazzo
When people think of New Jersey, their first thoughts probably focus on the Jersey
Shore. Followed by the industrial regions … and the cities like Bayonne and Newark that are almost mirror images of New York City. Mention mountains and many
people are not even aware that there are mountains in New Jersey.
But mountains dominate the northwest corner of the state and the area is home
to the spectacular Crystal Springs Resort. Six golf courses, two hotels and an array
of outdoor activities at Crystal Springs Resort provide the backdrop for a top luxury
getaway – only a 90-minute drive from New York City.
The six golf courses are led by Ballyowen, currently ranked as the No. 1 public
course in New Jersey. The course was designed by architect Roger Rulewich, who
worked for many years as the top assistant to Robert Trent Jones before going out on
his own.
Ballyowen is a wind-swept landscape, almost totally devoid of trees. The holes are
framed by picturesque waves of fescue grasses that elicit memories of Scotland and
Ireland.
“I fell in love with Ballyowen when it first opened and the appreciation of its outstanding design has increased over the years,” said Tony Leodora, golf writer and host
of the award-winning Traveling Golfer television show.
An episode of the Traveling Golfer show aired in a number of outlets in June and
still can be seen on www.travelinggolfervideo.com. “We got as many comments about
the Crystal Springs show as we have from any other location we have visited,” said
Leodora. “The surprising thing is that, despite being so close to large cities like New
York and Philadelphia, so many people have never heard of it.”
Following close behind Ballyowen on the menu of quality golf are the challenging Crystal Springs course, the picturesque Wild Turkey and Cascades courses, the
executive-length Minerals course and the player-friendly Black Bear course.
The Crystal Springs course was designed by the late Robert von Hagge and is as
visually stunning as it is difficult. Although not overly long, at 6,816 yards, testimony
to its difficulty can be seen in its 73.5 rating and 139 slope from the back tees.
The Wild Turkey course, another Rulewitch design, is a lot more player-friendly.
As a result, it is a favorite of the guests who come to Crystal Springs.
The world-class Grand Cascades Lodge, with spectacular dining, luxurious accommodations
The Minerals course, adjacent to the Minerals Hotel, is a family favorite. The
Black Bear course is cut out of the trees and probably gets more play than any of the
courses.
The Cascades course, a 9-hole Rulewitch design adjacent to the Grand Cascades
Lodge, is very versatile. It is an excellent golf course for golfers of all skill levels, and
serves as the venue for the popular Foot Golf that has come to Crystal Springs in
recent years. The two hotels include the world-class Grand Cascades Lodge, with
spectacular dining, luxurious accommodations and one of the five largest wine cellars
in the world. The sports-oriented Minerals Hotel features a world-class fitness center,
indoor tennis and racquetball courts, an indoor/outdoor pool, horseback riding and
many other activities.
“People really have to see this place in order to understand all there is to offer,”
explains Chris Mulvihill, son of the resort’s founder, the late Gene Mulvihill. “The
resort was my father’s passion for years and the Grand Cascades Lodge was its crowning glory. When people come here they are amazed by the beauty and captured by all
there is to see and do.”
In addition, the exciting lifestyle provided at the resort, is presented as an added amenity to the golf smorgasbord. The tour of the 135,000-bottle wine cellar is an
unforgettable segment.
“After spending a few days shooting the show I don’t
know which to talk about more – the great golf and excitement found on the courses, or the incredible luxury
and amenities found in the hotels,” said Leodora, got an
in-depth look at the entire property. “This mountainous
section of New Jersey is so close to Newark airport, and
Tony Leodora Host of GolfTalk Live
so accessible by many major highways… yet it seems to
be light years away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Crystal Springs really is the nearby getaway.”
For more information at Crystal Springs Resort, the
golf courses, the Grand Cascades Lodge and the Minerals
Hotel, go to the website at www.crystalgolfresort.com.

New Products At ING Conference
Knuth Golf and it’s High Heat fairway woods and hybrids
By Mike Kern
Each year at the International Network of Golf spring conference, which this
May was held at the Heber Valley resort near Salt Lake City, Utah, new products are introduced. Actually some have been to ING before, but either way it’s
a chance to experience some of the things that are going to be hitting the golf
industry before they actually do. Here’s just a sampling of some of the ones that
impressed me, and in many cases a lot of other folks, the most.
Let’s start with Knuth Golf and it’s High Heat fairway woods and hybrids.
Launched at the 2015 PGA Merchandise show to big-time reviews, I’m playing one of their drivers. It later earned an ING Industry Honors award in the
Product Ingenuity category. The fairway woods and hybrids have the same
technological advances, which means deeper and lower center of gravity and
higher MOI compared to major brands. Dean Knuth, the primary inventor of
the USGA Course Rating and Slope Rating Systems, designed these clubs with
amateurs in mind. They go long, and they go straight. Nothing wrong with either. And hardly shockingly, they won the award for best product of the spring
conference. Definitely worth checking out. Tell them I sent you.
Anyone who knows me understands that I’m technologically challenged. But
the people promoting Golf GameBook assured me even I could use it. And
they were right. Headquartered in Finland, it made its debut in 2010. It’s a
digital scorecard that you can dowload from a free App that gives you a way to
not only keep score and store your golf memories but a way to talk trash to others on the course playing in the same game. It’s really a lot of fun, even for dinosaurs like me. It supports 25 different game formats, and is a unique way to
add some social media to your experience. And it’s not only for the millenials.
Golf Overnight is a way to make getting your clubs from home to wherever
hassle-free and affordable. I know we’ve heard of these before, but for basically the same price you’d pay to check your bags at the airport these folks will
transport it for you. That means no more lugging it through concourses and to
rental car kiosks and all those other things that as you get older you just don’t
want to do any more. They use FedEx and UPS to ship, with flat-rate shipping.
Chase 54 is a New Line of Men's and Women's Golf Apparel
And if you’ve ever had your clubs get lost, well, that’s no longer an issue. They
can pick up anywhere and get it there overnight.
Chase 54 is a new line of golf apparel that is trying to push the limits of what’s
possible in fit, feel, fashion and performance. Both on and off the course. It’s
a hard business to make a mark, but they’ve got over three decades of experience going for them. I saw some of their stuff and got to wear a few things,
and they’re getting it right. They designed the men’s and women’s shirts for the
conference, and nobody seemed to be disappointed. My wife loved hers, and
the longsleeve one they had for the guys with a chest pocket really stood out.
Golf Skate Caddy is another one of those gadgets that if I can handle it, anyone can. I was skeptical at first, but it was a lot easier to use than I thought and
it was fun. It’s a new personal golf transport vehicle that could change the way
we think about getting around a course. It literally is like riding a skateboard.
Or maybe even a surfboard. It’s designed to speed up the pace of play, lessen
turf damage and supply optimal physical support for players. It’s a smooth ride,
and if you’re lucky maybe you’ll come across it soon at a facility near you.
If you’re planning a trip to Scotland, Italy, Australia, South Africa or the Caribbean and want to expertly personalize your plans/itinerary, Perry Golf is
probably the company to check out. They’ve been doing this for awhile, and
now they’re even expanding their market. Cruises are becoming a bigger part
of their offerings. If you want it, they can probably find a way to provide it.
They’ve had a lot of satisfied customers over the years. There’s a reason for that.
You might want to check out what they can do for you, if an overseas excursion
is in your future.
SNAG Golf is an idea whose time has come. I’ve been a fan of it for several
years now, maybe because I can play it better than I can play real golf. Imagine
that. Starting New At Golf is a first-touch program that teaches the game to
all age groups. But it’s primarily geared toward youngsters. It can be played in
any environment. And most of all it’s a blast. Over the past 12 years it’s become
the program of choice in 42 countries and 10,000 schools and park facilities.

result. Decades from now nobody will remember, or care, about the how part.
Just who got the trophy.
And there were details. Johnson trailed Shane Lowry by four going into the
final round. The, standing on the 12th tee with a 2-shot advantage, he was
informed by USGA officials that he might have to take a 1-stroke penalty because his ball had moved as he was getting ready to putt back on the fifth hole.
You didn't think he was going to finally get through one of these without some
drama. Of all players, in all tournaments.
But this one had a happy ending. Johnson made sure of that, by closing with
a 1-under par 69 to finish at 276, three ahead of Jim Furyk (final-round 66),
who tied for second the last time it was held there in 2007, Scott Piercy (69)
and 54-hole leader Shane Lowry (76). He would have won by four, after a
birdie on the final hole, but the USGA did indeed dock him a stroke for what
they said was a violation on the fifth green. By then it didn’t matter, although
it was embarrasing that for awhile nobody seemed to know who was actually
leading the U.S. Open.
“There’s a lot of satisfaction,” said Johnson, who made only two bogeys on
Sunday despite hitting just eight of 14 fairways. “Especially after I’ve been so
close so many times. It’s just an unbelievable feeling. It’s hard to even describe.
“Seeing as how it didn’t affect the outcome, no, I still didn’t want the penalty. I
didn’t think that I did anything to cause the ball to move, but at the end of the
day it didn’t affect what happened. So it doesn’t bother me at all ... (But) maybe
for a little bit I was thinking just one more thing to add to my list.”
His playing partner, Westwood, who was in contention before closing with an
80, backed up Johnson’s take on the call. And twitter blew up, with Spieth,
Rory McIlroy and Ricky Fowler taking the USGA to task. And the USGA
deserved the flak, for creating a situation that really wasn’t necessary.
“This was definitely a good time to get it done,” Johnson said. “But I had a
lot of confidence in my game coming into this week. I’ve been kind of doing
everything well ...
“ (The USGA) said they were going to review (the decision) after I was done.
There’s nothing I can do about it, so let’s just focus on (the next) shot and go
from there. So that’s what I did ... all the way to the house. I just kept telling
myself it’s just me and the golf course. I know this course is very difficult, and
it’s very difficult to close. I wasn’t worried about what anyone else was doing.
I don’t even understand the rule ... It’s happened to all of us at one time or
another. I want to thank everyone who was supporting me (on social media).
It was nice.”
Garcia closed with a 70 for 280. Jason Day got his fifth straight top 10 in a
major, after opening with a 76. He got back into contention in the third round
and even made some noise on Sunday, but a double bogey at 17 and a bogey
at 18 left him at 71 and 282.
The moment belonged to one. It’ll be a popular win.
“It’s been a great road,” Johnson said. “I’m definitely a stronger person coming
out the other side. It’s definitely a big monkey off my back. I’ve been in this
situation time and time again. So I know what to expect. I know how to handle
myself. It’s fantastic. Because I’ve worked so hard to get here.
“I don’t feel like I played great, but I feel like I played really good. It’s definitely
a start to becoming a great player.
“Even on the 18th green, after I hit it in there close, I had to ask my (younger)
brother (Austin, his caddie), ‘Where do we stand?’ I’m pretty sure I’m ahead,
but I had no idea.”
He does now. And that’s forever. Welcome to the club.
About time.
“I’m different,” Johnson said. “I’ve grown up a lot. Having a son (Tatum, who
was there to greet him with Paulina for congratulatory hugs) and starting a
family has made me grow up a lot. I just didn’t quite get over the hump (before).”
That’s no longer a burden.

Pat Mitchell, Tim Holland and Anthony & Gary Sebastianelli
Shoot 7-under par 65 in 2016 AGA Mid-Am Senior
Moscow, PA – Elmhurst Country Club was the setting for the 18th Anthracite
Golf Association Mid-Am/Senior Championship on Wednesday, June 19th. The
team of Patrick Mitchell, Glenmaura Country Club & Pocono Farm Country Club's
Tim Holland combined for a 7-under par 65 to take the team title.
Glen Oak Country Club's father & son team of Gary and Anthony Sebastianelli
also carded a round of 65 but were unavailable for a playoff and spit tournament
medalist honors.
The tournament showcased some of the Anthracite Golf Association's finest talent
at one of our area’s most demanding golf courses. Each team consists of one “mid-am”
player (age 19-49) and one “senior” player (50 and older). Players competed in both
a team and individual format concurrently.
In the individual portion of the event Anthony Sebastianelli of Glen Oak Country
Club had 8 birdies enroute to a 4-under par 68 to win the "mid-am" title. Glenmaura
National Golf Club's Chas Dennis finished in second with a great round of 2-under
par 70. Glenmaura National Golf Club's Pat Mitchell (71) and Stephen Hudacek
(71) rounded out the top spots.
Paupack Hill's Country Club member Bob Andrejko shot 2-under par 70 to
lead the way in the individual Senior Division of the event. The Country Club of
Scranton's Mike Vassil finished second with a round of 1-under par 71. Rounding
out the top spots were Irem Country Club's Jim Breck (71) and Elkview Country
Club's John Zavada (72).
The shot(s) of the day came courtesy of Brad Flickinger of the Country Club of
Scranton as he holed out his second shot for an eagle 2 on the par 4 18th. Wyoming
Valley Country Club's John Lasko holed out on the par 5 #10 for eagle.
A total of 124 players representing 49 golf clubs in Pennsylvania were present
at the event. The Anthracite Golf Association would like to thank host Elmhurst
Country Club and it's staff, all volunteers, and those who participated to make the
tournament a success.

Berry & Brunn Jr. Capture McCarthy Tournament at WVCC
Kluger & Williams Capture 70th Allan at Fox Hill
Art Brunn, Jr., right, watches his drive at the fifth tee with partner Rick Berry in the
McCarthy Golf Tournament at the Wyoming Valley Country Club
By: Nicholas Gill
Golf is taking center stage in our region as clubs around Northeast Pennsylvania
kick off the tournament season. The competitions are the highlight of the season and
began with Wyoming Valley Country Club’s 2016 McCarthy tournament.
Former Temple University star Brandon Matthews and partner Ken Ralston
began the contest with co-medalist honors, posting a five under par 66. They were
joined by Eric Williams and Scott Henry, who also posted 66.
Matthews is no stranger to medalist honors as he and former Temple teammate
Patrick Ross carded consecutive 7-under-par, 63s to top the leaderboard in the 2016
U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Winged Foot Golf Club in March.
Neither team would advance through the difficult field to the finals. The two
teams who ran the gauntlet were Rick Berry and Art Brunn Jr. and Drew Mamery
and Eric Plisko.
In the end, the team of Rick Berry and Art Brunn Jr. captured the championship
defeating Drew Mamary and Eric Plisko 3&2.
It has been a long time coming for both golfers. Brunn Jr. is a five-time runner-up
at the McCarthy. Berry is a constant in the championship flight. Both were able to put
together enough good shots to seize the coveted title.
“What is most important is Art and I come out and play golf together every
night,” Berry said. “We are constantly practicing together and having fun. This is the
pinnacle of my golf career. There is nothing that compares.”
Berry and Brunn Jr. looked to close out the match on the par-3, 15th hole. Both
players whacked their tee shots off the slope on the right and funneled them just below
the hole. Plisko pushed his tee shot right, but recovered with an outstanding up and
down. He rolled a pressure soaked, clutch putt in to stave off elimination.
Berry ended the match of the next hole after knocking his iron shot into the
middle of the green. He lagged his putt down the hill for a conceded par to send Berry
and Brunn Jr. to the well-deserved championship.
As June pushed forward, the next notable day on the golf calendar became the
2016 John. A. Allan tournament held annually at Fox Hill Country Club. The prestigious and competitive tournament saw the team of Dave Klugar and Eric Williams
battle through a four team playoff on Friday to enter the championship flight.
Klugar and Williams never looked back, earning their way into the championship
match on Sunday afternoon and capturing the title for the second time, defeating
John Mikiewicz and Tom Biscotti on the final hole.
The winners of Fox Hill Country Club’s 70th John A. Allan Invitational are (R) Dave
Kluger and Eric Williams. They defeated (L) John Mikiewicz and Dr. Tom Biscotti.
The duo overcame an early two hole deficit to take a one hole lead heading into
the into the long, downhill par-3, 13th hole. Klugar worked his draw of the tee to the
right side of the green. The natural slope carried the ball toward the pin and settled
seven feet past the cup.
Klugar was left with a very fast, knee-knocker down the hill. He put a delicate
touch on the putt as it began to travel quickly down the hill, breaking left to right.
It stopped in the bottom of the cup for a birdie to push the Klugar/Williams lead to
two holes.
“We played that hole earlier today and I hit the shot to almost the same spot,”
Klugar said. “I hit the putt six feet by and made bogey. I told Eric, this time, I was
going to hit it in the same exact spot and I did.”
“That was really a big putt,” Williams added.
Williams took advantage of his length and ball striking on another par-5, this
time the 14th hole. He was able to crush his second shot to the right front fringe and
make another birdie to push the lead to three holes up.
With Mikiewicz and Biscotti facing a massive challenge to get back into the
match, the duo embraced the pressure and fired back.
Mikiewicz drained a 25-foot putt on the 15th hole for birdie to cut the lead to
two holes. The long putt swung hard left to right, but Mikiewicz had the perfect pace
to find the cup.
Biscotti followed on the 16th hole with a terrific approach to 10 feet. He confidently rolled in the birdie to chop another hole off the lead.
That left Klugar and Williams one up heading into the 17th hole. Williams second shot had a little too much spin and the severe back to front green rolled his ball
off the front. He chipped a beauty just below the hole to save a par.
Mikiewicz and Biscotti had both struck darts into the 17th green. Mikiewicz
found the right rough off the tee, but recovered with a spectacular punch under the
trees that ran to seven feet from the hole.
Biscotti dropped his approach within five feet for birdie. Neither was able to
capitalize on the difficult putts and the match went to the 18th hole with Klugar and
Williams leading by one hole.
Mikiewicz fired another terrific approach into the 18th, but just burned the edge
on the putt. Williams knocked home his par putt and solidified the Allan tournament
championship for Dave Klugar and Eric Williams against a strong effort from Mikiewicz and Biscotti.

Swing Wizard Golf Training Aid designed by Keith Rogers
much is self-explanatory.
Last but certainly not least, was EduKaytion Golf, from Kay McMahon, an
instructor who's based in the Northeast and has been in the business forever.
She's come up with a program, Golf 8.5, that's meant to simply teaching the
game. I can only speak from what she did with me. She literally took me, because I was having problems, and had me making a much better, much easier
to perform, swing in about 10 minutes. Seriously. Her whole point to me was,
if I get the club in the right position at the end of the backswing, there's no
way I can't make a solid pass at the ball. And she's right. She's worked with
youngsters, and actually had them teaching older students. You really have
to see it in action. We've all had a bunch of lessons in our time, and swing
thoughts. I think this is one of the best I've ever come across. And Kay is great
to work with. Her 8.5 steps breaks it down to the point where even those of
us who have issues concentrating on too many things as we stand over the ball
can figure it out. As she says, golf is hard. But it doesn't have to be as difficult
as we often make it. I can't recommend her insights enough. Definitely worth
checking out, even if it's only for curiosities sake. I don't think it'll take you
long to get hooked. And help yourself
in the process. Who doesn't want to
get more out of what we have? Her
methods/thoughts can be that vehicle.
And the way she gets her points across
won't make you feel intimidated in
any way, which might be the best part.
So there you have it. Just trying to
let you in on what we had access to
out west. Happy shopping. I’m sure
many of these can go a long way into
enhancing your daily life, if not your
handicap. Maybe next year I’ll see you
at ING so you can check out more of
this stuff firsthand. Nothing wrong
with knowledge, and putting it to
good use.
And the feedback/results has been nothing short of eye-opening. The word is
starting to spread. You can putt, chip, pitch and even use a full swing to enjoy
the sport without feeling overmatched. What a concept. It can work at the
grass-roots level, as well as adults who never thought golf was for them.
Gumbee Golf is as simplistic as it gets. The best things often are. Distributed
by TK International, which since 2000 has helped over 40 golf companies
get distribution set up in Japan and other countries, this line got its name
because it conjures up images of being limber and flexible. And how many of
us couldn’t use more of that? Exactly. They offer five products that can be used
to stretch your body, either before golf or just because. It can aid your fitness
as well as your swing mechanics. It’s inexpensive, and over 600,000 units were
sold in Japan in an 18-month span. They’re looking to have the same success
on this side of the Pacific. So be on the lookout for it.
Swing Wizzard is a training aid designed by Keith Rogers that allows
the user to see what transpires in
their swing and also to feel it, which
he says is the key to muscle memory
and consistency. It’s something that
you can use for even a few minutes a
day in your house. It’s being used by
PGA Professional instructors, Tour
pros and has received an endorsement
from Jim McLean, who’s using it in his
academies. The device conforms to a
body’s natural movement, and it’s not
intended to hit balls. He just wants
you to understand the dymanics of
your swing, so you can repeat it. And
isn’t that really what we all want. You
can actually pack it into your golf bag
and carry it with you. And it comes
with an instructional video that pretty

Herber Valley, Utah and Golf Getaways in
The Wasatch Mountains
Crater Springs Golf Course Homestead Resort
By Mike Kern
So you’re looking for something different? Good, because I might have something for you.
Most Easterners have been to Myrtle Beach, Pinehurst, Florida, the usual
suspects. And they’re all good. But sometimes, maybe you need a change.
That’s kind of what I was thinking as I was headed to the annual International Network of Golf Spring Conference, which this May took its act out west for
one of the few times. The destination was Heber Valley, Utah, about 45 minutes
from Salt Lake City. To be honest, I really didn’t know what I was getting myself
into. But I figured it was something worth checking out. Little did I know just
how much I was in store for. The scenery alone was enough to make me want to
go back. You don’t get those kind of mountain views just anywhere, especially on
our side of the Mississippi. Yet that was merely the beginning. It just kept getting
better as the week went on.
I mean, where else can you be playing in your summer shirt one minute, and
have it be hailing down on you five minutes later? Where else can you go scuba
diving in a nearby crater? Or do any number of things that make you realize
you’re not just near a beach anymore? That’s Heber Valley. And as I discovered,
it’s well worth the effort to get there. All you mostly have to do is bring your
sense of adventure with you. And, of course, your golf clubs, since there are five
very fine public facilities within 10 minutes of where we stayed. That would be
the Zermatt Resort, which is pretty much a taste of Switzerland in the west. So
how many times in your travels do you get to experience that? Figured.
The Wasatch mountains are all around you, and it’s impressive. The resort
has 330 guest rooms and plenty of conference and exhibition space. Which is
why it’s popular with companies for business seminars/retreats. But trust me, it
works just as well as for individual guests looking for a leisure stay. Everything is
conveniently situated, with two restaurants. One specializes in steaks. The other
focuses more on casual fare. Both are very reasonably prices for a resort. And the
pizza was as good as many that you’d find back here. Thin crust, well done. I
went for the sausage, pepperoni and roasted peppers. And it hit the spot so well
that I got another one the next day. Sue me.
31
Wasatch Mountain Golf Course The Lake Course
There’s also a full-service spa and all the other amenities that make excursions
like this special. Treat yourself to the steam and sauna, then hit the shower where
the water comes straight down (like Merion) or, if you choose, from like six different directions. You might not want to leave.
Sometimes it’s the little things, like the croissants they put out in the morning
or the bananna bread they put out in the afternoon. So how many of those do
you think I ate? Hey, I’m not stupid. The brisket in the lobby eatery (Wildfire
Smokehaus) is their specialty, and the funeral potatoes is a must-have side. Remember I judge all my trips as much on the food as everything else. I wouldn’t
steer you wrong. And the level of service from the staff, from the moment you
arrive, is truly hospitable. You really felt welcome. Always a reason to go back.
Oops, almost forgot. They have a bakery that also does sandwiches and sorbet that will give you diabetic shock. The smell alone is mesmerizing. If it was
located in Northeast Philly I would have a serious problem. Just keep telling
yourself that’s everything’s OK in moderation. Yeah, right. Then tell it to your
sugar levels. Just don’t mention it to your doctor.
Now to the golf. And we probably only scratched the surface of what’s available, given the fact that Park City is close by. But for our purposes we stayed
pretty close to home. Yet in no way did we feel like we got shortchanged. Quite
the opposite, as a matter of fact.
Crater Springs (part of the Homestead Resort) is literally right across the
street, and we actually held our very-popular Demo Day there. Not only is it
convenient, but with four sets of tees it’s very pleasant and user-friendly. As
we soon found out, that seems to be the norm in those parts, even though the
degree of difficulty could obviously fluctuate from layout to layout. The course
was in great shape, and was rather pretty. Water comes into play occasionally,
and there are a few demanding holes. But overall it’s a track you can have fun on
without beating yourself up too much. Which makes it a good place to start out.
Then it was on to Wasatch, a 36-hole facility that’s part of the state park
system. The Lake Course has gentle terrain, is in the valley and is the easier of
the two. That, however, is a relative term. There are a couple of short par-5s. But
you have to be accurate off the tee, since there’s a lot of trees to navigate your way

A True Taste of the scottish Coast at the Jersey shore
Twisted Dune is like no other course in Southern New Jersey. True to its name, Twisted Dune is
a links-style course of twisting landscapes, dramatic elevations, and rolling fairways that offer a
challenging yet supremely playable 18 holes carved on 200 acres in Egg Harbor Township. Deep
ravines, towering grass covered sand hills and well over a 100 bunkers make Twisted Dune’s 7200
yards among the most memorable in the region. The design features four par 5’s over 500 yards,
10 par 4’s and four par 3’s. Though fescue and sand are generous, so are wide fairways, dentgrass
landing areas and large greens. Twisted Dune offers a visualy stunning golf experience that rewards
accuracy and course management - making it enjoyable for golfers of every level.
It’s the kind of course serious golfers love to play again and again - each time bringing a new
experience.
