Please allow me to take this opportunity to offer my warmest congratulations on the holding of the 8th
Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan.
Science and technology play a major role in solving the various problems that human society is facing
and helps us to realize safe and productive lives while promoting economic growth. Japan is a country
that does not possess a large amount of natural resources, so it is our people and knowledge that will
support our future development. Strengthening our science and technology capabilities is an issue that
is essential for our future growth. In particular, the development of creative human resources who are
active in the fields of science and technology is extremely important.

However, in recent years we have been confronted with problems such as the gradual retirement of

the generation of highly skilled engineers that have supported Japan’s monozukuri efforts in the past

and the growing disinterest of our young people in monozukuri activities. The importance of a practical
education that will train and cultivate new engineers has been reemphasized and developing and
ensuring the presence of monozukuri human resources is an urgent issue that needs to be addressed.
Given these circumstances, this competition provides students with the opportunity to undertake the planning, design, and construction
of a small, formula-style racing car in an effort to pass a rigorous inspection that will evaluate the vehicle’s handling, concept, design,
and cost management. It is a true test of the comprehensive monozukuri skills of the student participants. I believe that this competition
is an extremely meaningful event that contributes to the practical education of engineers that will support Japan’s industries in the future
and also contributes to the invigoration of engineering education.
The planning, designing, and construction of a small racing car is a valuable opportunity for all these students to discover the enjoyment
and challenge of monozukuri and the pleasure and importance of working together with your teammates toward a common goal. In the
process, they will also gain valuable and useful knowledge of practical problem solving and applied skills, enterprising leadership abilities,
and management expertise that far exceed what can be gained in the course of their daily engineering studies. I believe that this is a
priceless experience for their future success in industry as an engineer.
This will be the 8th Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan and I am delighted to know that the number of schools participating in
this event has continued to increase each year. This year a total of 85 teams from both within Japan and from overseas will participate
and this demonstrates just how highly regarded this competition is both within Japan and around the world.
I would like to wish the best of luck to all the teams, academic advisors, and related university personnel participating in the competition,
and I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan and everyone responsible for
helping to plan and organize this event.

Welcome to the 8th Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan
The Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan began in 2003 and this year marks the 8th time that this
competition will be held. The purpose of the competition is, to develop human resources that, through
the support of government, industry, and academia, will contribute to the development and promotion of
both automobile technology and industry by having the students play the main role in planning, designing,
and constructing an automobile on their own in a competition of comprehensive monozukuri skills.
This year, a record total of 85 teams have entered the competition with 75 teams coming from Japan
and 10 teams coming from overseas. I take pride in the fact that the activities undertaken up to now
as a part of this competition have been recognized both inside and outside of Japan and that the
competition is attracting a high level of interest.
At this year’s competition the maximum number of teams that will be able to pass the document

screening stage has been increased to 75 teams from the 66 teams that were allowed to pass last year

and in order to confirm the completeness of the vehicles in advance, the teams are required to submit

proof of shakedown certification. This was done in an effort to provide an opportunity for even more
teams to participate in the competition in response to the increase in the number of team entries, while
also helping to ensure safety and to facilitate smoother operation of the competition. As in the past, a follow-up program has of course
been prepared for those teams that are unfortunately not able to pass the document screening stage in order to help prepare them for
entry in next year’s competition.
The preparation days on which the advance vehicle inspections have been conducted up to now have been increased to five days from
four, including the period that the competition is held, in an effort to conduct the competition while giving highest priority to ensuring safety.
Furthermore, in a continuation from last year, a driving demonstration of EV formula vehicles will be held and a new simulated vehicle
inspection will also be conducted. Electric automobiles have been attracting a great deal of attention recently and it is expected that this
will promote more technological exchange between the mechanical and electrical fields.
Finally, in addition to wishing the best of luck to all the students on the participating teams, I would also like to express my sincere
appreciation to all the representatives of industry, government, and academia for their support, cooperation, and sponsorship provided in
these continuing tough economic conditions, to everyone in the host cities of Kakegawa and Fukuroi here in Shizuoka Prefecture for their
considerable cooperation, to everyone at the corporations and universities that kindly dispatched staff to help run the competition, and of
course to everyone on the event staff who helps support this competition and allow it to run so smoothly.

Outline of the Competition
1.Purpose of Competition
Competition Category
To develop human resources that, through the support of government, industry,
and academia, will contribute to the development and promotion of both
automobile technology and industry by having the students play the main role in
planning, designing, and constructing an automobile on their own in a competition
of comprehensive monozukuri skills.

Inspection
Cost
The intent is to encourage the participants to learn that budget and cost
are critical elements that must be taken into consideration in any production activity. The accuracy of costs in a report submitted by a deadline in
advance, and the degree of agreement between the costs identified in the
report and the actual vehicle are judged. A “real case” scenario where
students will have to respond to a challenge related to cost or manufacturing of the student vehicle.

Presentation
Presentations are made under a scenario that the developed vehicle has
been designed to meet market demands for a weekend car race for
amateur drivers, and to persuade officials from manufacturing vendors
that the vehicle can be profitably produced and sold. The students'
presentation skills are evaluated.

Design
Based on design data that has been submitted by a deadline in advance
and also on the vehicle itself, evaluation is made in terms of what technology is adopted, what innovations have been made, and whether the
adopted technology is appropriate from the standpoint of marketability.
Specifically, an oral examination is conducted to probe the appropriateness of the design of the vehicle and components, innovativeness, and
ease of manufacturing, repair, and assembly.

Acceleration
Acceleration from 0 to 75 m. On each team, each of two drivers drives
the car twice for a total of four times, and performance is judged in terms
of time.

Skid Pad
The vehicle's cornering performance is evaluated in steady state turns
over a figure-of-eight course. On each team, each of two drivers drives
the car twice for a total of four laps, and performance is judged in terms of
time.

Autocross
Vehicles are driven over an approximately 800 m course comprised of a
combination of straights, turns, and slaloms. On each team, each of two
drivers drives the car twice for a total of four laps, and performance is
judged in terms of time.

Endurance and
Fuel Economy
Vehicles are driven over an approximately 22 km course comprised of a
combination of straights, turns, and slaloms. On each team, each of two
drivers drives the car by taking turns, switching at the mid point of the run,
and performance is judged in terms of time. Fuel economy is evaluated in
terms of the amount of fuel consumed in the endurance test.

Awarded
Points
Vehicle safety and conformance to design requirements as stipulated in
the rules; Brake test: Four-wheel locking; Noise tests: An exhaust noise of
110 dB or less under prescribed conditions; Tilt table tests: Checking that
no fuel leakage occurs when the vehicle is tilted at 45 degrees, and no
rollover occurs at 60 degrees.

We designed our memorial, first F-SAE racing car“AGF-01/10”with
the concept of pure attraction for motor racing including the radical FR
layout, the direct mounted wings, and the stylish fully cowled body.
This year, we hope to complete our first experience of racing car

municHMotorsport was founded in 2006 and will start the 2010 season
with nearly 50 members. The team consists of students only, which
attend dif ferent faculties like automotive engineering, mechanical
engineering, electrical engineering, business economics and many more.
Our aim this year is to design a car to represent our team, our university
and our sponsors in an adequate way. Therefore we decided to make a
further development of the 2009 car.
