Chautauqua: (pronounced sha tauk’ wa)… of Seneca Indian origin; a name of a place, variously represented as titles in early
(chiefly French) writings and maps… literal meaning = “one has take out fish there…” … which may account for the relationship to
Lake Chautauqua in southwestern New York. Chautauqua, NY Is the site of the educational assembly started in 1874 and is still in
existence today.
In the late 19th century, the Chautauqua movement became a popular form of adult education and entertainment in the United
States. Using noted lyceum speakers (such as Teddy Roosevelt and William Jennings Bryan) and local talent, the movement literally
spread throughout the country, traveling in caravans and setting up their tent performances in towns with primary access to the
railroad. In the 1920’s; Wytheville, VA was a stop on the Chautauqua circuit, reportedly known as the “Redpath Circuit” which ran
perpendicular to the “White & Meyer Circuit” that crossed the rural Midwestern United States, where Chautauqua was particularly
popular. The Chautauqua lectures, musical feathers, dramatic arts and children’s activities rose in popularity during the 1920’s,
followed by its demise, brought on by the Great Depression and the rise of the film industry. In 1985, the Chautauqua Festival was
rejuvenated in the southwest VA community of Wytheville, and has been a source of entertainment, enjoyment and education again
over the past thirty two years.
The Indoor Art and Photography Show: The annual Chautauqua Art & Photography Show will be accepting artwork
(paintings, drawings and photos) entries for hanging on Thursday, June 16th from 4pm-7pm in the lower level of the 4th Street
Civic Center. Judging will take place on Friday, June 17th. Artisans entering work in this year’s show are invited to an
opening reception on Saturday, June 18th at 9am to preview the show and awards prior to access by the general public.
Artwork must be picked up between the hours of 10am – 2pm on Sunday, June 26th. Any questions can be addressed by
email at [email protected] or by calling Sam Dukes at 276-284-1172

Hard Day's Night takes audiences on a journey through the lives
of the world's favorite four lads from Liverpool. They begin with
the black suit Sullivan Era, as four boys take the world by storm,
giving rise to Beatlemania. The crowd will then be ushered into
the birth of stadium rock reliving Shea Stadium and the outdoor
concerts of 1965 and 1966. Hard Day's Night takes you through
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the album that changed
the face of rock 'n' roll, just as the psychedelic 60's changed the
planet. The trip culminates with the Beatles' late studio years,
which cemented the band's legacy as the greatest group in
history.

While many younger folk musicians in America
were abandoning traditional music for more
modern Pop, Sham kept the Irish tradition alive
with crackling urgency. Sham have been
collaborating for almost a decade but their musical
reputation in Virginia is a ferocious one. Composed
of some of the most supremely virtuosic players in
Irish music today, they are a revelation to fans of
all ages who were drawn to the group's thrilling,
dynamic harmonies.

Calvin Jackson, has been playing music all his life. He has developed a
relentless, highly rhythmic charged style that takes the blues to another level.
This four-time winner of the prestigious Blues Music Award’s Drummer of the
Year (2010-2014) is widely regarded as one of the best drummers in the world
and has begun to make a name for himself as a traditional Blues guitarist, as
well. Cedric Burnside Project’s latest album, Descendants of Hill Country, was
nominated for a Grammy for Best Blues Album of the Year.
Young songwriter Marcus
King’s debut album,
displays his stunning
command of rock, blues,

Following in the tracks of Gram Parsons, Merle
Haggard and George Strait, Caleb Caudle makes
pure country music rooted in the genre's glory
days, back when melody, mood and message
ruled the roost. It's not contemporary countrypop, nor is it part of any underground outlaw
scene. Instead, Caudle's music finds the middle
ground between the classic twang of lateSeventies/early-Eighties country and the dusty
stomp of modern-day Americana.
Mickey Guyton signed to Capitol

for the most one–week adds for a
debut act’s first single. Mickey
appeared on several "Who To
Watch for in 2015” lists
including NPR, Billboard,Spotify, Yahoo Music, Huffington
Post, Mashable,Taste of
Country and Nashville Lifestyles.
She was also recently featured in
the Wall Street Journal and,
“Better Than You Left Me”
was USA Today’s Song Of The
Week. In 2016 she was
nominated for ACM New Female

“Many Thanks and a Round of Applause’
Not to risk inadvertent oversights, the Wythe Arts Council wishes to express sincere thanks to all
who contributed toward the success of the Chautauqua Festival-in-the-Park. We know this
festival would not be possible without countless volunteer hours. It is estimated that
approximately 1,000 volunteers support the activities leading up to and carried throughout the
festival.
Thanks, as well, are due for the unending gifts-in-kind. These types of gifts are abundant in
quantity, invaluable in quality, and often so behind-the-scenes that they can be overlooked. They
never seem to be motivated by recognition, yet without them, the show could never go on!
Finally we dedicate this endeavor to our local and visiting festival-goers. Enjoy the 32nd annual
Chautauqua Festival!
