An analysis* of nearly 5 million test scores from more than 800,000
students in almost 2,000 schools across the country revealed that

A common metric in social science research is effect size, which
quantifies the amount of gain made in terms of standard deviations.
The effect size for the Compass Learning study group was 0.52. How
good is this? Standards vary, but the U.S. Department of Education’s
