Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 33rd Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival!
Following on the heels of our second successful spring series,
this year’s summer festival is packed with both the beloved
and the revelatory. We start the season with a special program
dedicated to the life of Mozart hosted by friend of the Festival
Alan Alda in which he weaves the letters of Mozart, his family,
and those who knew him best with music of the great master.
The following Wednesday, our Free Outdoor Concert moves
to the field in back of our home venue at the Bridgehampton
Presbyterian Church. There we will present Summer Winds,
a program that draws on some of the most beautiful and
enticing music ever written for mixed ensemble.
On Saturday, August 6, friends of the Festival will gather at
our annual benefit for a virtuosic evening of music and dining
in support of the festival. BCMF’s donors make everything
we do possible, and we are deeply grateful for your
continued support.
Over the course of the festival we will present beloved
works by Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Mendelssohn,
Brahms, and Dvořák, as well as rarely heard gems by their
contemporaries such as Boccherini, Spohr, Hummel, and
Rheinberger. We continue to explore the best in contemporary
music and have several exciting surprises in store. I’m also
thrilled that our partnership with the Parrish Art Museum
continues with two performances offered on the same day.
Our sole Saturday concert this year focuses on music from
the Court of the Sun King, Louis XIV, and students of his most
famous court musician, Jean-Baptiste Lully.
Finally, we are constantly amazed by the truly magical
musicians who join me each summer to share their artistic
passion with you, our beloved audience.

Free Outdoor Concert
New Location
A summer favorite, one and all are invited
to enjoy an evening of music al fresco in the
field behind the Bridgehampton Presbyterian
Church. Bring family and friends and don’t

Benefit Concert
A cultural and social highlight on the East End,
the BCMF Board of Directors invites you to
join them in supporting the Festival in a superb
evening of music and friendship at the Atlantic
Golf Club.
Wm. Brian Little Concert
Now a Hamptons tradition, this annual
concert takes place among the whimsical
sculptures of the Channing Sculpture Garden in
Bridgehampton. Hors d’oeuvres and Channing
Daughters’ wines round out the evening.
Baroque Saturday
Designed to both engage and enliven spirits,
this approximately one-hour program at the
Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church will provide
a soul-refreshing jumpstart to your Saturday
evening.
BCMF at the Parrish
We once again will partner with the Parrish Art
Museum in presenting a special program in
the Lichtenstein Theater. Free admission to the
Museum is included with your ticket. Choose
between 4:30 and 6:30pm concerts.

virtually penniless. Actor Alan Alda
takes us on a journey that explores

A Virtuoso Evening
Atlantic Golf Club
Support the Festival and enjoy an evening of virtuosic wonder, with a superb
collection of international luminaries performing a program stretching over
300 years of composition. From Vivaldi’s sparkling concerto, to Schnittke’s
tongue-in-cheek homage to Mozart, to the gorgeous and almost orchestral
Nonet of Spohr, the elegant and rousing program will be followed by cocktails
and dinner.

By far Beethoven’s most popular work during his lifetime, the expansive and
charmingly delightful Septet captures the young composer’s impish brilliance
and compositional mastery. Beethoven ushered in the Romantic style of music
to follow, laying the groundwork for the lush, orchestral textures of Josef
Rheinberger’s Nonet. Combined, it makes for an evening not to be missed.

Bach/Shostakovich/
Mendelssohn
Shostakovich and Mendelssohn had much in common: both were
child prodigies, both left behind a vast body of work, both were
fantastic pianists, and both were capable of plumbing the depths
of the human psyche. Shostakovich’s piano quintet combines
soul-searching and sweetness, while Mendelssohn’s D minor trio
begins in restless disquietude but ends in triumph. Opening the
program is JC Bach’s G major Flute Quartet, a lovely work that
bridges the gap between Baroque and Classical music.

Romantic Adventure
Be swept away on a voyage of sound. From the first bubbling notes
of Martinů’s Sonata you will be transported into another world.
Dohnányi’s youthfully romantic Serenade continues the excursion
before arriving at Fauré’s stunningly beautiful Quintet, an adventure of
color and nuance unto itself.

Unfinished Business
Taking the Parrish Art Museum’s concurrent exhibit entitled “Unfinished Business”
as our cue, we’ve put together a program that ponders the question “When is
a finished piece unfinished?” Whether a movement of an uncompleted work
(Schubert), a single idea used to create many works of the same name (Pärt), a
work drawing on a bygone dance form (Brown), or music that pays homage to
the past through the looking glass of the present (Harbison), we explore the many
ways… Tickets include access to the Parrish Art Museum’s collection.

Profound Virtuosity
Music can be profound. It can be virtuosic. But when it is both, the hair on
the back of your neck stands up. In the capable hands of some of the world’s
best chamber musicians, it is nothing short of a marvel. This program
combines a depth of spirit and a technical mastery sure to delight and amaze.
Here are three “B’s” worth hearing – William Bolcom’s sly and humorous
Haydn Go Seek looks back with a wink to the great master of the Classical
period, Josef Haydn, while Boccherini’s Flute Quintet continues the festival’s
tradition of presenting these rarely heard but deeply satisfying flute quintets.
The program concludes with Brahms’ majestically powerful A major
Piano Quartet.

Lully’s Legacy: From the
Court of the Sun King
At the height of the French monarchy, Louis XIV, the “Sun King,” devoted
much time and energy to support the arts. One of his most famous musicians,
Jean-Baptiste Lully, produced not only great music but attracted the best
composers to work with him. Here we place Lully alongside his incredibly
talented musical protégés.

Packed with memorable and emotionally charged
melodies, Dvořák’s stunning Op. 81 Piano Quintet
is among the best in the genre. Written in the
same year and showing the composer’s lighter
side, Dvořák wrote his Miniatures to play with
close friends – the definition of chamber music. In
between, Nino Rota’s dazzling Trio provides the
perfect counterpoint for the 2017 summer season’s
final concert. .
