The AACDCF assists in rebuilding the smiles and lives of adults
who’ve suffered dental injuries from domestic and sexual violence,
through compassionate cosmetic dental services and support programs.

To Our Supporters
Dear Friends:
Over lunch, in Honolulu, HI, Give Back a Smile (GBAS) Founder Dr. Wynn Okuda
and his practice manager had an idea about how they could help people in their own
way and literally remove the scars of domestic violence. Then, through the American
Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation (AACDCF), the GBAS
program was born. Fifteen years later, thanks to volunteers and supporters, the program
has restored more than 1,400 smiles of survivors of domestic violence valued at more
than $14 million in donated dental services.
This year, we are excited to share that GBAS eligibility has expanded from assisting
survivors of intimate partner violence to also serving adults who have received dental
injuries to the smile-zone from a family member or due to sexual violence. It is our
sincere hope that broadening the eligibility will allow more survivors of domestic or
sexual violence access to the life-changing smile restorations GBAS provides.
Between November 1, 2013 and October 31, 2014, 62 new applicants were referred to
a GBAS volunteer dentist; 71 smile restorations were completed valued at $813,736 in
donated dental services.
Thanks to your support, the AACDCF provided $20,000 in educational scholarships
to GBAS smile recipients enrolled in college. One scholarship recipient survived four
years of brutal blows to her face. GBAS has restored her smile, and now she is seeking
an Associate’s Degree in Social Work and is planning to work with children in need.
Another scholarship recipient lost her front teeth due to a blow to the face with a
crowbar. Once her smile was restored by GBAS, she enrolled in college. Her goal is to
open up a restaurant where women getting back on their feet, and who may otherwise
find it challenging to get a job, can work.

Our continuous goal is to increase national awareness
of available GBAS services. This year, we took a unique
approach and partnered with popular Harlequin romance
author, Isabel Sharpe, to write a love story about new
beginnings. The e-novella “For One of Your Smiles”,
tells the story of a young woman who escapes her abuser,
learns to overcome insecurities and fear, and loves again.
Details about the GBAS program are featured in the
book, which is available for 99 cents via Amazon. Book
proceeds also benefit the AACDCF. In conjunction
with the announcement of the e-novella, a national press
release was distributed highlighting tips to help a friend
in a domestic violence situation.

are they great colors, they represent our mission.
Purple:
Domestic violence awareness is represented by the color purple.
It symbolizes peace, courage, survival, honor, and dedication to
ending violence.
TEAL:

Cynthia’s Story
Cynthia had been married for seven years
before the abuse got physical.
She recalled:
“He had always been verbally abusive,
very controlling and vicious. It seemed that
everything was always my fault and I could
never do anything right.”
The last five years of their marriage
were filled with many explosive violent
experiences that will stay with her forever.
Cynthia left her husband for good, but
her missing and damaged teeth due to the
violence, remained. Cynthia stated:

“I am a public speaker. I try to use my
experience to help other people. I understand
the importance of how we present ourselves.
It is hard to take a person seriously when
they have bad diction; due to a gap toothed
smile that distracts from the important
matter at hand. I missed my smile. I did not
feel like myself anymore. People treated me
differently. My self-esteem was at an alltime low. It is amazing how a smile or lack
of smile can change your life so dramatically.”
Several years later, she applied for the
Give Back a Smile program. GBAS

Thank you to everyone who participated
in or supported the second annual Give
Back a Smile Virtual Race! In October
which is Domestic Violence Awareness
Month, roughly 250 participants helped
spread domestic and sexual violence
awareness by getting active around the
world.
Participants supported the race from as
far away as Sweden, Germany, Canada,
Trinidad, and the Middle East. Registrations generated $9,160 for the Give Back
a Smile program!
Many posted their photos to social
media including Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram, using #RaceforSmiles2014.
Smiles by Santiago
Participants chose to “race” in some
unique ways to spread awareness by
staying fit:
Smiles By Santiago (Dr. Robin
Santiago) participated in a walk
around the town square, distributed
flyers to local businesses, and invited
members of the community to donate
to GBAS during October.
Dr. Julie Gillis and her team participated in a variety of activities together
such as walking, biking, practicing yoga,
and going to the gym.
Digiorno Dental Fitness (Dr. Anthony
and Juli Digiorno) participated in a walk
as a group around their town.
Smiles by Schwartz (Dr. Sanford
Schwartz) got active as a group and
invited family members and friends
to join.
Drs. Christopher and Ken Banks went
for a walk and did an outdoor yoga class
with their dental practice.
Dr. Michael Wong rented a purple bike
and rode for 15 miles wearing his GBAS
