Message from the President
I welcome you to join us for the 20th Biennial Congress of ISAPS. This year we also
celebrate our 40th anniversary. Founded in 1970, ISAPS has grown from a handful
of members to become the leading international membership organization in
aesthetic surgery with nearly 2,000 members from 87 countries. The Biennial
Congress is the centerpiece of our mission and commitment to excellence in
aesthetic surgery education worldwide. Dr. Renato Saltz, Education Council Chair,
and his committee members have designed an outstanding program with
international faculty representing 44 countries – a faculty that excels in leadership,
innovation, teaching skills, and a commitment to patient safety. In short, the best of
aesthetic surgery worldwide will be in San Francisco.
In addition to the official scientific program, we will hold the first ISAPS Global Summit on Patient Safety on
Saturday, August 14th. Speakers will include leaders from our own specialty, related specialties, legislators, and
representatives from the travel and insurance industries. Admission is free to all Congress registrants and I
encourage you to attend this important session.
Our Congress venue is the state-of-the-art Moscone Convention Center with ample space for our scientific
sessions and exhibits. The Moscone Center is a short walk from our headquarter hotel, the San Francisco
Marriott Marquis.
San Francisco, one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in America, will warmly welcome you. The natural
beauty, the steep hills, the fabled cable cars, the landmark Golden Gate Bridge, plus world class restaurants, arts
and entertainment, and a host of recreational activities await you. As the city’s slogan goes, “Only in San
Francisco.” California, the Golden State, welcomes you to visit its redwood forests, snowcapped mountains,
Yosemite National Park, and the vineyards of the Napa and Sonoma valleys, all within a day’s drive from San
Francisco.
The Western United States, with the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Teton mountains,
indeed the whole Pacific coast all the way up to Alaska, are only a short plane ride away, making them a great
destination for pre-meeting or after-meeting side trips. A memorable summer family vacation awaits you in

Prof. Dr. João Carlos Sampaio Góes
graduated from the Medical School of
Universidade de São Paulo in 1973 and
obtained his PhD degree in Pathology
there in 1986. He specialized in
Oncologyy in 1979, Plastic Surgery in
1981 and Mastology in 1984. He
trained at Roswell Park Institute and
Guttman Institute in the United States,
Notre Dame Hospital in Canada and
Hospital Dieux-Strassburg in France.
He is the founder and chairman of the Instituto Brasileiro
de Controle do Câncer (Brazilian Institute of Cancer
Control) and a member of the Board of Counselors of
Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein both in São Paulo, Brazil.
Dr. Sampaio Góes was the president of ISAPS from 2004 to
2006 and Sociedade Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica –
Regional São Paulo in 1986.
Dr. Sampaio Góes is a member of 25 national and
international medical societies and received three awards
from Academia Nacional de Medicina (Brazilian Academy
of Medicine) – Brazil: Prêmio “Fernando Machado Moreira”
(1979), Prêmio “Costa Junior” (1982) and Prêmio “Múcio
Athayde de Combate ao Câncer” (1983) and “Prêmio
Ethicon”- the award for Plastic Surgery (1996). He received
the commendation “Comenda do Rio Branco” from the
Brazilian government in 2001 and the “Raymond Vilain
Award” from ASAPS in 2010.

CONTENTS
He is the author of 102 scientific publications including
original articles, chapters and books. Dr. Sampaio Góes has
given over 1,050 lectures and surgical demonstrations
throughout the world.
Dr. Sampaio Góes is one of the pioneers in the development
of modern surgical periareolar breast techniques that
include reconstructive, therapeutic and aesthetic plastic
surgery objectives.

OBJECTIVES
Participants attending this Congress will:
1. Recognize the most up-to-date aesthetic surgery procedures currently practiced around the world;
2. Identify new techniques that are most likely to improve practice outcomes of aesthetic plastic surgery in facial
rejuvenation, liposuction, rhinoplasty, toxins and fillers, breast surgery, abdominal surgery, body contouring,
peri-orbital, and Asian aesthetic surgery;
3. Evaluate and critique presented information leading to an improved understanding of the nuances of surgical
techniques and post-operative patient care;
4. Discuss new techniques and international parameters for improved patient safety; and
5. Encourage and support student, resident and fellow training in the latest techniques in their teaching facilities.
ACCREDITATION
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential
Areas and Elements of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
through the joint sponsorship of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery,
Inc. and International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The American Society for
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Inc. is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing
medical education for physicians.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Inc. designates this educational
activity for a maximum of 34 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should
claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Credits are subject to program changes.
Of the 34 credits, 11.5 Patient Safety hours have been identified as programming dedicated to patient safety related topics
and will satisfy Patient Safety CME requirements.

Our international faculty of patient safety experts will include plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, legislators, and
representatives of the insurance and tourism industries. The four facets of the ISAPS Patient Safety Diamond: the patient,
the procedure, the facility, and the surgeon will be introduced and discussed in depth, emphasizing the importance that
each of these four facets plays in patient safety worldwide. In particular, the role of legislation and how local authorities and
governments regulate the standards for surgical facilities and qualifications of the surgeon will be debated. Medical tourism,
which ISAPS refers to as Medical Procedures AbroadTM, and how this global trend is affected by the four patient safety
diamond facets will also be featured. This program is open to all who have an interest in patient safety.

Friday. Most banks are open on Saturday from 9:00 - 12:00.
Automatic Teller Machines are open 24 hours and are
located throughout the city. Facilities for exchange of
currency are available at the airport, The San Francisco
Marriot Marquis and banks.
To assist you in obtaining any necessary visas, it is essential
that you complete the registration via the Congress website
including a valid email. Congress Organizers will process
your registration and send a receipt of your payment. You
can then present this invoice to your nearest US Embassy or
Consulate with your visa application. If you require a special
letter of invitation, please contact the ISAPS Office. In the
event that your visa application is unsuccessful, you must
advise the Executive Office in writing by July 31st to receive a
full refund. No refunds will be made after July 31st.
CAR RENTAL & PARKING
Cars can be rented in the US from local or international
companies. Average cost per day for a medium sized car is
USD $60.00. The San Francisco airport has nine major car
rental companies, and Hertz has an office in the Marriott
Hotel. Parking at the Marriott costs $56 per day. Parking in a
public lot nearby costs $32 per day. Parking fees are subject
to change.
CURRENCY EXCHANGE RATES
Electricity in the US is 120 Volts, alternating at 60 cycles per
second. If you travel to the US with a device that does not
accept 120 Volts at 60 Hertz, you will need a voltage
converter and adaptor for US outlets.

On an evening in 1853—just three years after California joined the United States—seven men assembled in a candle-lit

SOCIAL EVENTS
The California Academy of Sciences soon became one of the west's most popular destinations, drawing 80,000 visitors
annually to gaze at its giant wooly mammoth, lifelike grizzly bears, native plant specimens and rare artifacts.
But when the Great Quake of 1906 struck the city, the Academy's home and all but
a handful of specimens were lost. It would not be the last time that nature exacted a
price from those who sought to study, protect and preserve it.
In 1916, the Academy found a new home, the North American Hall in Golden Gate
Park, where it grew over the decades to include Steinhart Aquarium, Simson
African Hall, Science Hall, the Morrison Planetarium and more.
From 2006 to 2009 the academy was completely renovated to the spectacular,
world-class, “green” facility we have today. The new vision: To create an institution
for the 21st century - a premier destination of grand design, and one that would
bring the latest in scientific research to the public in the most engaging,
educational and inspiring way imaginable.
