PRESIDENT’S REPORT
University of NORTH ALABAMA
President’s Message
Sincerely yours,
William G. Cale, Jr., President
Zhang Zhiting, Dr. William G. Cale, Jr., and Dr. Chunsheng Zhang
Plans made for
integrative health center
A partnership between UNA and
Shenqi Ethnic Medicine College (SEMC)
in Guiyang City, China, will soon create
a first-of-its-kind Center for Integrative
Health in Florence. The center will train
practitioners in a holistic approach to
wellness, addressing the connection
between disease, lifestyle and the whole
person. Students will earn a master’s
degree in health and human performance
with a concentration in integrative health.
An international memorandum of
agreement was signed in January by Dr.
William G. Cale Jr., UNA president, and
Zhang Zhiting, founder and board chair
of Guizhou Shenqi Group, which created
SEMC.
“We are deeply appreciative to Mr.
Zhang for his vision and generosity
in this project,” Cale said. “We cannot
find another center like this one that
specializes in integrative health training.
This will be valuable not only for students
but for society.”
Through the UNA-SEMC
partnership, UNA will be responsible
for the development, implementation
and operation of the program, while
SEMC is responsible for land purchase,
construction of instructional and
residential facilities, and seed money for
the hiring of faculty, staff and research
assistants. The center is expected to be in
full operation by fall 2014.

Perfect
outcome received from
SACS
review
In mid-spring semester, UNA
received what its president, Dr. William
G. Cale, Jr., called “rarest of rare
outcomes.” Following its on-site review
of the university, an eight-person team
from the Commission on Colleges of the
Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools (SACS) reported no findings,
recommendations or need for follow-up.
Such a report from SACS is achieved
by only about 2 percent of colleges and
universities undergoing similar reviews.
SACS is the regional accrediting
body for degree-granting institutions in
the southeast. Every SACS-accredited
institution undergoes a review every 10
years.
“I felt good going into the review,”
Cale said, “but no one anticipates a
perfect outcome. This is an affirmation of
the excellent quality found at UNA.”
President’s Report
This only scratches the surface of
the success we’ve seen at the University
of North Alabama this year. I invite you
to read about these successes and many
others in the following pages. As you do,
please know that you and each and every
person listed in this 2012 President’s
Report has played a critical role in this
success.
The importance of alumni and friends
like you to institutions like UNA becomes
more valued each year. Because of you,
UNA continues to grow and thrive even
as public funding declines. Because of
you, students are receiving scholarships,
earning a quality education, and preparing
for careers that are dreams fulfilled.
You are vital to this university. On
behalf of the students, faculty, staff
and administration, thank you for your
generosity and support.

William G. Cale, Jr.
At this time each year, as I reflect
on the past 12 months and all that has
happened, I am often amazed at how
much can transpire in such a short
time. The close of the year 2012 is no
exception.
The past year has brought much
activity to campus: The grand opening
of the new George S. Lindsey Theatre
and the groundbreaking for the new
Academic Center and Student Commons;
the official site visit from our regional
accrediting body, the Commission on
Colleges of the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the
report of a perfect site visit review; the
laying of groundwork for a first-of-itskind Center for Integrative Health and
approval to offer a graduate degree in
that field, plus the announcement of two
other new degree programs – the Master
of Professional Studies and a graduate
concentration in Public History.

Dr. Dan Hendricks was named UNA’s
vice president for university advancement
in October.
“Dr. Hendricks will bring to UNA an
outstanding track record with university
advancement programs,” said Dr. William
G. Cale, Jr., UNA president. “His
experience, polish and enthusiasm will
serve this institution and this community
very well.”
As vice president for university
advancement, Hendricks will head a
university division responsible for alumni
relations, major gifts, annual and planned
gifts, corporate and foundation relations,
and communications and marketing.
Hendricks and his wife, Barb, moved
to the Shoals from Saint John, Ind. He
had previously served as vice chancellor
for advancement at Purdue University
at Calumet, executive director of the
Western Illinois University Foundation
and vice president for advancement and
public services, vice president and chief
development officer for the Louisiana
State University Foundation, director and
chief operations officer for The Campaign
for University of Kentucky, and director
of planned giving for Hanover College.
Hendricks is a graduate of DePauw
University and holds a master’s degree
and Ph.D. from Duke University.

$279,935,300 each year in direct and
indirect spending, according to a study
released in July. The study was conducted
by Dr. Doug Barrett, Dr. Jim Couch and
Dr. Keith Malone of the university’s
Department of Economics and Finance.
“The Shoals community is vital
to UNA, and so it is important for the
university, in turn, to show the growth
and development we are able to bring to
the Shoals,” said Dr. William G. Cale Jr.,
UNA president.
The study analyzed UNA’s local
economic impact through university
operations, contractor operations, student
and employee spending, and spending
through university events and guests.

Sally Independence Foster
The diaries of Sally Independence
Foster, written in the Civil War era
and beyond while she was a resident
of Rogers Hall, now a part of the UNA
campus, were donated to the UNA
Archives Collection by her family in
June. The donation was made by Foster’s
great grandson, James T. McDonald Jr.,
and his wife, Mary, of Atlanta; and her
great granddaughter, Flora Speed, and her
husband, James, of Marietta, Ga.
The donations include two diaries,
spanning 1861-87, as well as business
records dating back to 1835. McDonald
said her diary entries from the Civil
War era were particularly significant as
she wrote from a house, Rogers Hall,
occupied by soldiers, including Lt. Gen.
Nathan Bedford Forest.

Tolkan donates
scripts, memorabilia to
UNA archives
Notable actor James Tolkan, in
April, donated multiple film scripts and
other memorabilia to the UNA Archive
Collection, including such important
documents as an original script from
“Back to the Future.” Tolkan is known
for his diverse roles on stage and screen,
including the strict, intimidating Principal
Strickland in the “Back to the Future”
films, Commander Hondo in “Top Gun”
and memorable roles in “War Games,”
“Masters of the Universe,” “Dick Tracy”
and Woody Allen’s “Love and Death.”
Tolkan visited UNA in March 2010,
when he was a celebrity guest at the
George Lindsey UNA Film Festival.

UNA dedicated its new
George S. Lindsey Theatre and
Ernest Borgnine Performance
Hall March 2, just months
before the passing of the two
Hollywood stars. Lindsey, a 1952
alumnus of UNA, and Borgnine
were longtime friends of the
university. For several years,
UNA has been home to their
archive collections, including
Lindsey’s complete collection
of “Andy Griffith” scripts and
Borgnine’s scripts from “McHale’s
Navy,” “Marty” and other
important films and programs.
The Department of Music
and Theatre debuted its new
theatre and performance hall
with “A Streetcar Named Desire”
in June.
UNA’s summer 2012 production
of “A Streetcar Named Desire” brought
together on stage theatre students
and notable Hollywood professionals.
Leading the cast were Elaine Hendrix
as Blanche DuBois and Myk Watford as
Stanley Kowalski. Hendrix is perhaps
best known for her role as opportunistic
fiancé Meredith Blake in the 1998 Disney
remake of “The Parent Trap.” Watford is
known for his roles on Broadway and as a
cast member of the 2007 blockbuster film
“No Country for Old Men.”
“A Streetcar Named Desire” was the
lead production of the university’s 2012
Summer Theatre program.

sold-out Norton Auditorium Oct. 1 as
a part of the university’s Homecoming
festivities. Proceeds from the show
benefited the UNA Alumni Association
and a new scholarship created in White’s
honor.
Since the February 2011 release of
their first album, “Barton Hollow,” which
debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200
and No. 1 on the iTunes overall Albums
chart, The Civil Wars’ performances have
included “The Tonight Show,” “Good
Morning America,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live”
and the “54th Annual Grammy Awards.” In
February, the duo took home Grammys
for Best Folk Album and Best Country
Duo/Group Performance. In March,
they appeared on the cover of Billboard

UNA news headlines, game scores,

new UNA mobile app was launched in
July for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry

“This has been a goal of ours for
several years as we’ve monitored the
ongoing evolution of web-based media,”
said Josh Woods, UNA director of
communications and marketing. “Today,
mobile apps are a medium our students,
alumni and others are using every day –
and many times a day – so it only makes
sense that
we use that
medium to

make it a practical, everyday tool that
is going to make life much easier for
students attending UNA.”

The College of Nursing and Allied
Health received a grant of $2.1 million
from the U.S. Department of Health
Resources and Services Administration
in October. The grant is paving the way
for disadvantaged students, particularly
underrepresented minorities, into UNA’s
new OPEN (Opportunities for Entry Into
Nursing) program. OPEN is designed
to address local and national healthcare
needs among disadvantaged and minority
populations.
“Minorities in underserved areas
are at significantly higher risk for heart
disease, obesity, stroke, diabetes and
other diseases,” said Dr. Birdie Bailey,
dean of the UNA College of Nursing
and Allied Health. “Through this new
program, we intend to train individuals
from those areas to bring a greater
quality of healthcare service back to their
communities.”

I arrived at the University of North Alabama in October
and have received such a gracious welcome as the new Vice
President of University Advancement and Executive Officer
of the UNA Foundation. It is a privilege to be a part of the
UNA community and a particular joy to report the generous
Dr. Dan Hendricks
outpouring of support for the University and its educational
mission. Let me simply say, “thank you.”
Your many gifts to the University bear witness to a tradition of philanthropy
that stretches back through the years to 1830. Through the years, the harvest of
your generosity has grown and with it, the rich bounty of educational benefits
and services in our classrooms and laboratories. I need not chronicle what this
has meant to thousands of UNA graduates who have walked across the stage at
graduation and gone on to bless communities in our State, nation, and the world
with their enlightened lives and good work.
Some of the highlights of the 2011-2012 giving year were:

• the much-anticipated children’s book “looking for leo” which was
authored and illustrated by UNa alumni dalen Keys and Walt vandiver was

• the University broke ground on the new academic center and student

This past year gifts and pledges to UNA totaled $3,678,737. This represents
a stunning 27% increase over last year. Gifts and a more positive investment
environment enabled UNA Foundation assets to grow by 21% from $18,259,277 in
2011 to $22,019,305 in 2012.
Let me express again my appreciation on behalf of the entire Advancement
Staff to our alumni and friends for your partnership with the Foundation and your
wonderful support of our University. As with those who came before us, your
continuing love and loyalty to the University of North Alabama will echo through
the years, bearing witness to an abiding belief in the immeasurable value of higher
education and the good work that abounds under the stately oaks.

SUPPORT YOUR UNIVERSITY
When you give to the University of North Alabama you become part of an important legacy,
joining the generations of alumni and friends helping the next generation of college students.
Your financial support provides scholarships, updated technology, study abroad opportunities,
and state-of-the-art facilities. The University requires funding to continue to
be the first-class institution of higher learning it has always been.
The simple fact: State funding has been decreased by 30 percent, which means we need our
Alumni and Friends’ support to achieve our current and future goals, now more than ever.
BENEFIT YOUR COMMUNITY
Another benefit to contributing to UNA is the positive economic impact the University has on
the Shoals community. The figures below are a small sample of this impact.
48
GIVING is easy … Cash • Check • Monthly draft • Online giving
Your tax deductible gift allows UNA to invest in programs we believe in, and we ask you
to be a part of building a solid foundation for the current and future needs of
the University and its students.

SHOW YOUR ALUMNI PRIDE –
for the students’ sake.
When you donate to the University of North Alabama Foundation, you are part of more than a
group of UNA’s most distinguished graduates – you are part of a family that paves the way for future
generations of UNA students. Your support for students by giving back will fuel much-needed
scholarships for students from your local area, from your college or from your designation of choice.
