September - Fagowee`s
A Message from our President
To all my loyal minions,
I’m still getting the hang of this
president thing. I’m a little disappointed
though. Where is my Secret Service
detail? My motorcade? My song?
Fagowees Force One? And most
especially my intern? In protest I’m not
going to say anything presidential in this
message. It wouldn’t be prudent.
Now that I’m fully entrenched in
the office there are a few things I’d like to
get on the record because you never know
what your history is going to be like until
long after you’re gone. Facts are stupid things but here are a few about me.
* People have got to know whether or not their President is a crook. Well,
I’m not a crook. It depends on what the meaning of the words “is” is.
* I started skiing in 2012 and got elected president in 2013. It’s possible you
misunderestimated me.
* I was under medication when I made the decision to run for president.
* I’ve now skied in 57 states — I think one left to go.
* I have left orders to be awakened at any time in case of club emergency —
even if I’m in a board meeting.
* I did not have sexual relations with that woman and I didn’t inhale.
Besides, when the President does it, that means it’s not illegal.
* I’ve known eight presidents, three of them intimately.
* If I had to name my greatest strength, I guess it would be my humility.
Greatest weakness, it’s possible that I’m a little too awesome.
Once again I have to mention that there are several positions open on the
executive board. One person can make a difference and every person should try.
Please consider filling one of these positions. What this club needs is adult
supervision. It takes a lot of people to run a club of this size and while we cannot do
everything at once, we can do something at once. If you can’t commit to a board
position how about running a trip?
(continued on page 4)
Editor’s note. Once again our
revered, but verbose, leader has
exceeded the space allocated to
his monthly inspirational message. For more of these words of
wisdom, readers are urged to
repair immediately to page 4.

NOTICE: Executive Board Members' phone numbers are printed in The Happening and in the Directory. Members having any suggestions, questions, or problems are invited to call us.
However, members' phone numbers and addresses are for the sole use of the membership of the Fagowee Ski Club. No one may use this information provided in the directory for business
use of any kind. Unauthorized use of our directory can result in disciplinary or legal action. Read more about our constitution, by-laws, and code of conduct at www.fagowees.org.
Congratulations to the Fagowee of the Month!
Our Fagowee of the Month for September is an honorary Fagowee. Conflicts with the space-time continuum
have prevented him from attending any meetings, but he has assumed the role of Chaplain. In this role he has
provided spiritual and ethical guidance for our membership through his stirling example. He is a creative
entrepreneur who enjoys bringing joy and fulfillment to others by providing the scarce goods (such as wives and
tribbles) to them. The next time you are in the cantina at Mos Eisley, and you see a jolly man holding court in the
corner, give a shout out to our newest Fagowee of the Month -
Harcourt Fenton Mudd!
PS. If he shakes your hand, count your fingers before you walk away!

A Message from our President (Continued)
Any definition of a successful life must include serving others. Talk to our Winter Social Chairperson Lisa D about
trips that need leaders or co-leaders. And so, my fellow Fagowees: ask not what your ski club can do for you – ask
what you can do for your ski club.
I have to give a special shout out to Lisa D. In my last message I mentioned that Donna B and I were the
only fools riding both Pan Ohio and Pedal to the Point. I was mistaken, but the only man who makes no mistakes is
the man who never does anything. Not only did Lisa ride both but she was team captain for PttP. If your actions
inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. Lisa did a great job as leader
on PttP as did my co-captain Shelli on Pan Ohio. These are both great rides and I encourage you to come on one of
them next year.
Your beloved leader, whose magnificence is exceeded only by his humility,
Bill
P.S. I can see Canada from my backyard.

Only ONE more Paper Issue!
(And other important stuff from the Happening editor)
Just a friendly reminder. Like many other large and successful print publications, the Happening will be joining
the 21st century. After October 1, 2013, the Happening will be published and available only on the web in
electronic format. Next month’s issue of the October Happening, which is printed in September, will be the last
printed copy you will receive through the mail. After that, you’ll be able to read it at our website. If you have any
questions or comments about this change, please see any club officer. Or, email us at [email protected].
We’d love to hear from you!
If you want to place an ad in the Happening, it is important that you give me the “copy” in a format that I can
handle. Please observe the following rules:
1. PDF format is acceptable and will be printed as is.
2. Word files should be in the “Word 97-2003” format.
3. Try to stick with Times Roman font.
4. If you are sending pictures with your Word document, send them seperately as jpeg or PDF files.
5. If you send a picture with people in it, let them know that it may be published. Also, please try to identify the
subjects in a photo.
6. Contact the Happening at [email protected] if you have any questions.
Also, don’t forget the new/old policy on using the back door in the bar at meetings – DON’T! All entry and exits,
including accessing the “smokers lounge” should be through the front door. Thanks in advance for your
cooperation.
Lastly, effective November 1, we will increase the meeting costs to $6.00 for members and $8.00 for Guests.
Save the Date!
Boston Mills/Brandywine will be holding their annual Fall Open House on October 18, 19,and 20. Season passes
and Pick-a-Day passes will be available at a significant discount. Also, the Fagowees will be manning a table in an
effort to present ourselves in a good light and attract new members. We’re looking for volunteers to help man the
table. Sign up sheets will be available at meetings and any time you can give will be appreciated. If you’ve got an

Continuing Education Corner
At the request of many of our more advanced skiers and racers, the Happening is proud to publish this set
of instructions on how to perform one of skiings most advanced techniques. This technique is limited to
those with many years of skiing experience, maturity, and a degree of sobriety. Some lower-body flexibility
is important and necessary in the prevention of pain.
How to make a Stem-Christie turn
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
Form a snowplow (see ‘Make a Snowplow Turn on Skis’) before you begin your turn. See picture 1
Begin increasing pressure on the inside ski that you want to use to initiate the turn’the left ski if you’re
turning right, or the right ski if you’re turning left. See picture 2.
Turn right by pointing your left arm to your right ski tip while holding your arms out in front of you. Do
the opposite to turn left.
Touch the pole to the ground (on the right, for example, to turn right) a bit in front of your body, and turn
around the planted pole. Increase pressure on the inside edge of the ski you want to turn. If you want to turn
right, you put pressure on the left ski by pushing down with your left big toe.
Allow the tail of your inside ski to slide down toward your outside ski as you finish the turn. This is known
as matching or parallel skiing. This step is the goal of the stem-christie turn. As the hill becomes steeper
and you start skiing faster, your skis will naturally want to come together through the turn. See picture 3.
Keep your hands up and in front of your body throughout the turn. See picture 4.
Finish your turn with your skis together. See picture 5.
* At this stage of your skiing career, it might be wise to avoid any trails marked with a black double diamond.
Those who choose to ignore this adice are urged to contact any board member or trustee for information on the
Fagowee’s Planned Giving program
