Liturgies & Devotions
Spirit of the Liturgy

“Pax Tibi, Marce” – The upcoming celebration
of St. Mark, our patron
Near the top of the highest arch on the Basilica of
St. Mark in Venice stands a familiar statue – a
winged lion, symbol of Saint Mark the Evangelist,
patron of our own parish here in Wilmington. The
lion holds an open book with the Latin inscription
“PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEUS.” Peace
be with you, Mark, my Evangelist.
According to ancient tradition, the first-century
apostle Mark (known also as “John Mark,”
mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles and the
Epistles of St. Paul and St. Peter), is the author of the Gospel which bears his
name. On his apostolic journeys, sources say St. Mark traveled as far as the
upper end of the Adriatic Sea and the lagoon where the city of Venice was
founded. There, an angel appeared to him saying: “Peace be with you, Mark
my Evangelist. Here shall your body rest.” Indeed, relics of the saint’s body
are in Venice, as well as in Alexandria, Egypt, where St. Mark founded the
ancient Coptic Christian community in the first century before he suffered
martyrdom.
The feast day of St. Mark on April 25th is considered a solemnity (a high holy
day) in our parish, a day of rejoicing and celebration. And this year, the
Catholic community of St. Mark in Wilmington celebrates forty years as a
parish!
Our upcoming weekend celebration consists of several events:
Saturday, April 23rd – Mass at 9:00 am in the church, followed by the 2 nd
Annual “International Food Festival” from 10 am to 4 pm. The day is filled
with great food, lively entertainment, children’s activities, an auction and
raffle, and more!
Saturday/Sunday - Regular weekend Mass schedule (Sat. 5:00 pm, Sun.
7:30/9:30/11:30 am, and 1:30 pm in Spanish)
Monday, April 25th – Solemnity of St. Mark Evangelist – our liturgical “holy
day” as we commemorate our patron saint at 8:30 am Mass in the church.
At all of the liturgical celebrations next weekend (Masses on Saturday,
Sunday, and Monday), we will sing a new hymn composed especially for the
community of St. Mark in Wilmington. The hymn features a refrain for the
assembly based on the Latin inscription “Pax tibi, Marce,” with choir/cantor
verses commemorating St. Mark as Evangelist, as founder of the church in
Egypt, and as patron of Venice and our own parish. During the upcoming
week, check the parish website for a little preview of this new hymn. Then plan
on attending Mass each day April 23rd to 25th as we celebrate St. Mark our
patron, and forty years as a parish!

Marriage Encounter
Weekend
Think of how tired, discouraged and
frustrated the apostles must have been
in the Gospel reading today. Then
Jesus shows up and tells them to try
one more time. Because they were
willing and obedient, Jesus blessed
them abundantly. It works the same
way in our own lives today; if we trust in
Jesus and do what He tells us to do we
will receive His abundant blessings!
Allow the grace of God to strengthen,
renew and rekindle your marriage
relationship.
The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter

Fourth Sunday of Easter
The Word: Protected by Christ
Jesus said, “ My sheep hear my voice. I
know them, and they follow me I give
them eternal life, and they will never
perish. No one will snatch them out of
my hand. (John 10: 27-28)
Living the Word
This Sunday is often referred to as Good Shepherd
Sunday. Sheep know and follow their shepherd’s voice.
Followers of Christ know His voice through the Word of
God, and follow Him through His teachings. This is how
we enter into a more intimate relationship with God.
