The University Mace
Symbols of authority and power, maces were originally hand weapons
designed for use against armor. Topped by the flame of knowledge, the
University mace has the University seal as a focal point and unifying element.
Tassels of maroon and white hang from the shaft of fourteen rods of black
walnut, symbolizing the fourteen counties of the Commonwealth.
The head of the mace is gold plate over highly polished brass. Complex
curves radiating from the hub in which the seal is centered reflect light in
constantly changing patterns, symbolic of the many-faceted environment of
the university life.
Academic Costume and Regalia
The academic regalia worn by faculty and students at this ceremony represent
traditions which come down from the Middle Ages, when European
universities were institutions of the church. At that time, robes were a
common form of dress, particularly for officials of church and state. The cut
of the robe, its adornment, and the colors used comprised a specialized
heraldry that conveyed the rank and station of the wearer. At the universities,
both faculty and students were considered to be part of the church hierarchy
and were expected to wear the prescribed gowns. As society moved toward
more modern forms of dress, only royalty, clergy, judges, and academics
retained the traditional regalia, reserving it only for ceremonial use.
Modern academic regalia retain some of the symbols of the earlier forms of
ceremonial dress. The gown tends. to be fullest, longest, and heaviest for the
doctoral degree. The sleeves for the bachelor's and master's gowns are
typically open at the wrist. Cuffs are more common on the doctoral gown,
and its sleeves are adorned by three velvet strips, symbolic of the. degree. The
mantle worn about the shoulders, called the hood, is the remnant of
functional headgear worn for warmth in the unheated classrooms of medieval
universities. Today its colors refer to the school that granted the degree and
the level or discipline of the degree (e.g., navy blue for Ph.D., pink for music).
The usual color for academic gowns in the United States is black. However,
many universities in this country and many others throughout the world have
adopted more colorful robes. In general, this practice has been limited to
schools more than one hundred years old. Among the schools represented by
colorful robes at commencement ceremonies are Boston College, Boston
University, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, New
York, Oxford, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Tufts, and Yale Universities, and
the Universities of California, Kansas, and Rhode Island.
Receptions after the Ceremony
(Please Note!)
Honoring Our Graduates
(Please Note!)
Receptions for individual UMass Boston colleges, as well as the McCormack
Graduate School, will be held after the ceremony, at various locations on
campus. For details, please see the separate page that was distributed with
this program. We ask all guests to remain at their seats until the academic
procession has left the Campus Center lawn.
To permit both the graduates and their guests to enjoy today's celebration, we
ask all members of the audience to remain seated during the ceremony, to
turn off cell phones, and to avoid making any sounds that might make it
difficult for others to hear.
This program is for ceremonial purposes. The official list of graduates is
maintained by the university registrar.

Leone! Fernandez
Doctor of Laws
Leonel Fernandez has been elected constitutional president of the Dominican
Republic in two different terms (1996-2000 and 2004-2008). He is the chair and
president of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), and a member of various foreign councils and institutions, including Circulo de Montevideo; the Council of
Freely Elected Government Heads of the Carter Center; Inter-American Dialogue;
and the Club of Madrid, He presides over the US-Caribbean Executive Club and
is the acting chair of the Dominican Republic United Nations Association.
A native of Santo Domingo, Fernandez moved as a child with his family to New
York City, where he spent his first school years and also attended high school.
When he returned to the Dominican Republic, he enrolled at Universidad
Auronorna de Santo (UASD), earning the degree of Juris Doctor with honors in
1978. As a professor at UASD and at Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias
Sociales, he distinguished himself with his work in the fields of communication,
sociology, rights of the press, and foreign relations. His books include Los Estados
Unidos en el Caribe: De la Guerra Fria al Plan Reagan, and Raices de un Poder
Usurpado.
In 1994, Fernandez was chosen by the PLD as a candidate for the country's vice
presidency and Juan Bosch's running mate. In 1996 election, he was the party's
presidential candidate and won after a vibrant campaign, becoming the first PLD
chief of state of the Dominican Republic and one of the youngest statesmen in
Latin America. After leaving office in 2000, Fernandez continued contributing to
the development of the Dominican Republic and the Latin American region
through a multidisciplinary think tank, the Fundacion Global Democracia y
Desarrollo. He was reelected to the presidency in 2004.
We honor Leonel Fernandez for his enlightened and effective efforts to increase
the well-being of his country's citizens, and for his commitment to the principles
and practice of global partnership.
Emily Rooney
Doctor of Humane Letters
Emily Rooney has been host and executive editor of Greater Boston, WGBH's
local issues and public affairs program, since its debut in January 1997. The series
has been honored with numerous New England Emmys, Associated Press, and
Edward R. Murrow Awards for public affairs programming and excellence in
writing and commentary.
She came to \XTGBH from the Fox Network in New York, where she oversaw
national political coverage, including the 1996 presidential campaign. When she
joined Fox in 1994, she was senior producer of Fox news productions; prior to
Fox, she was executive producer of ABC's World News Tonight with Peter
Jennings. At WCYB-TY in Boston from 1979 to 1993, she worked as news director and assistant news director before that. During her tenure, WCYB's news
department received such honors as two Alfred 1. duPont-Columbia University
Awards, several George Foster Peabody Awards, and the Radio/Television News
Directors Association (RTNDA) Edward R. Murrow Award for "Best News
Operation in the Nation." Under her direction, the station's coverage of the 1988
presidential campaign was recognized as the "Best in the Country" by both the
RTNDA and the National Headliner Awards.
Throughout her career, she has been sought after for her views on ethics and standards in broadcast journalism and advocacy of media accountability. Each Friday
on Greater Boston, she leads the show's "Beat the Press" edition, a discussion of
what the media covered during the week, and why. "Beat the Press" received the
prestigious National Press Club's Arthur Rowse Award for Press Criticism in 2001
and 2004. A native of Connecticut, she is a graduate of American University in
Washington, DC.
We honor Emily Rooney for a distinguished career in journalism, and particularly
for advocating-and demonstrating-the importance of accountability and truthfulness in the influential medium she has represented so well.

John Ruffin
Doctor of Science
John Ruffin has devoted his professional life to improving the health status of
minority populations in the United States and to developing and supporting educational programs for minority researchers and health care practitioners. He is
currently director of the National Center on Minority Health and Health
Disparities (NC~lHD), part of the National Institutes of Health.
At NCMHD he leads a national program of biomedical, behavioral, and social
sciences research; research training; and dissemination of information designed to
eliminate health disparities and health conditions that disproportionately affect
racial and ethnic minorities and other medicallv-underserved populations. He
manages the NC\1HD's staff, a budget in excess of $185 million, research programs, and statutorily-mandated health disparities programs.
He is the former director of the NIH Office of Research on Minority Health, the
predecessor to the NOvlHD. Prior to joining the NIH he was dean of the College
of Arts and Science at North Carolina Central University. A native of New
Orleans, he studied at Dillard University and Atlanta University before earning a
PhD at Kansas State University in systematic and developmental biology and then
pursuing postdoctoral studies at Harvard University.
His achievements have earned such recognition as the Samuel L Kountz Award
for his contribution to the cause of increasing access and participation by minorities in organ and tissue transplantation; the NIH Director's Award; the National
Hispanic Leadership Award; the National Medical Association Award of
Appreciation; a Special Recognition Award from the Secretary of Health and
Human Services; and, most recently, the Presidential Merit Award.
We honor John Ruffin for the vision he shares with the indispensable organization
he heads: the vision of an America in which all populations will have an equal
opportunity to live long, healthy and productive lives.
Gail Snowden
Doctor of Humane Letters
Gail Snowden is vice president for finance and operations of the Boston
Foundation, one of the oldest and largest community foundations in the United
States. In this position, she oversees the finances and administrative operations of
the $650 million foundation, and is a key member of the senior management
team.
She recently retired from banking after a 36-year career. Most recently, she was
executive vice president for Bank of America, where she was responsible for strategy development and oversight of 60-plus strategic alliances and partnerships.
Prior to that, she was president of FleetBoston Financial Foundation, and earlier
she served as executive vice president and managing director of FleetBoston
Financial's Community Investment Group. She joined Bank of Boston in 1968,
serving in many capacities through the bank's numerous mergers. Under her leadership, innovative financial services were brought to those most in need, and
nationally recognized community investment efforts were developed. Her contributions resulted in the awarding of "Outstanding" Community Reinvestment Act
(CRA) ratings at the banks, and the White House Ron Brown Award for
Advocating for the Needs of Minority and Low-Income Constituents.
Ms. Snowden is a member of the boards of Northeastern University, Simmons
College, and Initiative for a Competitive Inner City. She is also emeritus chair of
the board of directors of Freedom House, which her parents founded in 1949. She
has received numerous awards, including the Rosoff Diversity Award, and has
been named one of the nation's Top Business and Professional Women by Dollars
and Sense magazine. She is a 1967 graduate of Harvard/Radcliffe College and
earned an "'lEA from Simmons Graduate School of Management in 1978.
We honor Gail Snowden for a life's work in community development-for the
skillful and faithful application of extraordinary business skills to problems and
opportunities facing her fellow-citizens.

Steven Tyler
Doctor of Humane Letters
Steven Tyler is an icon in the entertainment world, having established himself as a
rock legend, setting styles and defying trends. He is the lead singer for one of the
most successful rock bands in history-Baston-based Aerosmith-and is establishing himself as a film presence after having already starred in an array of classic
videos. With Aerosmirh, he has helped change the face of the music world by generating 20-plus albums that have sold over 100 million copies. The band has
reached the Billboard charts with 29 singles, won countless awards, served as pioneers in new media, and earned a diehard fan-base around the globe. Having
recently wrapped up yet another world tour to support the group's 25th release,
Hankin' on Bobo (which received a four-star review in Rolling Stone), Aerosmith
remains the platinum standard for artistic and commercial success in the music
business. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
For years, Steven Tyler has also given himself to charitable efforts, from helping to
feed homeless women to making wishes come true for children with severe illnesses. He has supported some of Greater Boston's most significant non-profits,
among them Victory Programs and the Middlesex Human Services Agency, which
serve sufferers from alcoholism, substance abuse, and homelessness; and Cam
Neely's "Betting on a Cause and a Cure" fundraiser. He has also given time and
talent to Mayor Meninos ReadBoston literacy program and a "Talking Street"
cell-phone city tour, and to such events as the "Celebrity Hat Trick" supporting
the Boston and Worcester fire departments. Through the Intrepid Fallen Heroes
Fund and the Fisher House Foundation, he aids the families of soldiers wounded
or killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We honor Steven Tyler not only as a beloved entertainer of millions, but also as a
generous and productive contributor to the well-being of others, particularly in his
home city and region.

Honoring Our Graduates
Today all of us come together to celebrate the academic accomplishments
of new alumni of UMass Boston. Today's pageantry acknowledges the
efforts of each individual graduate, and each one of them will appreciate
your help in making Commencement Z005 an enjoyable and memorable
event. Please review this page to make yourself aware of important information you will need, and ways you can contribute to the success of the day.
We thank you for your cooperation.
As the Graduates Enter and Leave...
Please remain at your seats and avoid blocking the aisles. The ceremony
begins with an academic procession, signaled by a musical fanfare, and
ends when graduates have marched out of the seating area on the Campus
Center lawn. The three main aisles must remain free so that those in the
procession can march in and out without delay.
Cell Phones and Other Intrusions
The graduates request your undivided attention during today's ceremonies.
Please turn off any potentially noisy electronic devices, such as cell phones,
pagers, radios, and electronic games, and keep conversation to a minimum
while the ceremonies are in progress. This courtesy will allow everyone in
attendance to hear today's speakers.
Photographs
College Diploma Ceremonies
Professionals will be photographing each student as degrees are presented.
Your graduate will receive information by mail from the photographers
about purchasing his or her photographs (no one will be obliged to do
this). You are welcome to photograph diploma presentations from your
seat, and you will also be able to take photographs after the ceremonies.
Receptions for individual UMass Boston colleges, as well as the McCormack
Graduate School, will be held after the ceremony at various locations on
campus. Please note that both graduate and undergraduate degree recipients,
and their guests, are invited to attend the receptions for the colleges that
house their academic programs. The locations of the receptions are given
below and on the other side of this page. To reach your reception, please
follow the signs marked with the name of your graduate's college. They are
color-coded to match the color of your admission ticket.
