Day 1 (July 31, 2012)
Morning
Opening Program
Due to the inclement weather which led to the suspension of classes on July 30, 2012, the
Opening Program of Sports Fest 2012 themed “Healthy Mind and Sound Body: Essentials in
Producing Excellent Athletes” was moved on the following day, July 31. This was done with the
advice of the University officials to proceed with the Intramurals regardless of the weather
condition.
The program started at 8:00 a.m. Everyone was gathered at the LSPU Multi-Purpose
Gymnasium and Hall. When the guest speaker arrived, the program commenced with the national
anthem led by the LSPU Drum and Lyre Corps. This was followed by the invocation led by Prof.
Freddie Pinuela.
On the opening remarks delivered by the campus director, Dr. Roberto C. Miranda, all the
participants in the annual occasion were encouraged to “carry on positive traits for the success of
the Sports Fest.”
After the opening remarks, the muses and escorts who represented the different colleges/
institutions paraded down the venue. They carried the banners of their respective colleges as they
were cheered by their co-students.
Next to the parade of muses and escorts was the introduction of the occasion’s guest speaker, Atty. Antonio M. Carolino. This was done by the dean of College of Arts and Sciences,
Dr. Lu-
cita G. Subillaga.
On his speech, Atty. Carolino viewed Sports Fest as a practical venue to foster camaraderie.
This event may also break the autonomy of the academic life. According to him, the occasion does
not only hone the intelligence of the students, but, it also encourages everyone to be a good athlete
by being well-rounded. He further claimed that competition should be a test of character. With this
note, he stated that he himself spearheads the annual Sports Fest being held in Sta. Maria, Laguna.
With such initiative, he said that he is hopeful that the country will be able to find the next
generation of sports heroes. He concluded his speech with the statement, “It is not whether you
win or lose that matters. It is how you play the game. Thus, play fairly.”
After the message given by Atty. Carolino, the campus director, Dr. Roberto C. Miranda,
formally opened the 2012 Intramurals. This was immediately followed by the Oath of
Sportsmanship led by a University varsity player, Kim S. Sabarias (CHMT). After the oath-taking,
the torch which had always been a symbol in a friendly sports meet such as the Intramurals was
lighted by the selected athletes of the campus.
Due to the bad weather condition, the raising of colors which was supposed to be done by
all the colleges’ muses and escorts was postponed.
