A Message from Mayor Gordon Krantz
The Milton community has seen an
exciting year of both residential and
industrial development and expansion in 2011. Projects like the Milton
Education Village and the Derry Green
Corporate Business Park have made
great strides this year while we welcomed a number of new businesses to
our Town. Our focus on green and environmental initiatives continues with the
proposed GreenLife Business Centre
which will provide Milton with a surplus of energy. The new Milton Centre for the Arts and the Milton Sports
Centre expansion offer exciting entertainment and recreational opportunities
for local residents and visitors alike. It
is clear that Milton is thriving as we
continue to attract new businesses and
create a dynamic and balanced place to
live, work and play.
The Milton Education Village (MEV)
is moving forward, following the signing of a three-year extension to the
original memorandum of understanding between the Town of Milton, Wilfrid Laurier University and Mattamy
Homes. The signing of the partnership
agreement that also includes Sheridan,
Milton Hydro and other members in the
development community confirms the
commitment of these parties to establish the MEV in Milton. Comprehensive
plans for the 450-acre neighbourhood
include student housing and residential
developments, a research park focusing

of industrial development, which will
offer 2,000 acres of employment land
immediately south of highway 401.
Developer DelRidge Homes will increase the presence of green and environmental initiatives in Town with the
development of their GreenLife Business Centre. The Centre will not only
be using less energy, it will generate
more energy than the building will require for other uses.
We would like to welcome some of
the newest members of our business
community including Sun Products
Corporation, Phoenix Contact Ltd., and
a.b.m. Canada Inc. These organizations chose Milton for many reasons,
including our highway and railway access, land availability and expansion
capabilities, as well as our strong and
well educated work force. While we
attract new companies, our existing
businesses continue to flourish such as
Chudleigh’s who are in the process of
expanding their facilities to increase
their operational capacity.
The future of Milton is looking bright
with as we head into 2012. The Town’s
ongoing success with engaging new industries and preparing new business
parks for development while retaining
local businesses are proof that Milton is
prospering and will continue to develop
and evolve over the coming years.

Plans continue for a satellite campus in the Milton Education
Village between the Town of Milton and Wilfrid Laurier University
At the March 28, 2011 Town Council
Meeting Milton Council approved the
extension of the Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) between the
Town of Milton and Wilfrid Laurier
University, to develop a campus in
Milton within a comprehensively
planned neighbourhood. The threeyear extension commenced exactly
three years after the original MOU was
signed.
Much has been accomplished between
the two parties over the three year
period of the original MOU including
the following:
The Town has
a) Obtained ownership of 150 acres
of land within the Education Village to
be transferred to Laurier for the campus
when provincial funding has been
secured.
b) Initiated the development approval
process through Halton Region’s
and the Town of Milton’s respective
Official Plans.
c) Defined the site boundaries related
to the proposed campus and worked
with Laurier and key community
stakeholders to develop a vision for
the Milton Education Village through a
design concept exercise.
d) Completed a Milton Education
Village Partnership Program that
engages several public and private
sector partners to bring the financial
resources and expertise to build the
components of the MEV.
Meanwhile, Laurier has
a) Made a submission to the Ministry
of Training, Colleges and Universities
for funding for the construction of the
campus and its capital and operating
requirements.
b) Worked towards developing a
Master Plan for the campus to meet
their needs and to fit within the vision
for the MEV.
The three-year extension to the MOU
reaffirms the Town’s and Laurier’s
commitment to establishing a university
campus in Milton.
The campus would be housed on a
150-acre site which would become the
hub of the “Milton Education Village”
– a neighbourhood that would include
a university and college campus,
on-site student housing, a business/
research park, supporting services and
a comprehensively planned adjacent
residential neighbourhood.

Education Village project, visit

Greenlife Business Centre proposed in Milton
DelRidge Homes and GreenLife
Energy have joined forces to bring
Canada’s most progressive office
building in the field of sustainable
technology to Milton. GreenLife
Business Centre, located at 450
Bronte Street will not only demand
approximately 22% of the normal
amount of operational energy at about
137,500 kwh of energy per year,
but at the same time, it will produce
approximately 328,000 kwh/year from
a dynamic fully oriented 250,000 watt
PV array.
DelRidge is committed to building
to a “net zero” energy standard, and
promotes this as the next logical step
in the leadership towards substantive
and meaningful change in the industry
of sustainable technology. Through
the use of their own well developed
and evolving building system called
EnerBuild 7000e, DelRidge employ
the latest technologies in conservation
and energy monitoring. GreenLife
Energy, a wholly owned sub company
of DelRidge, operates remote solar
arrays as well as their own remote
wind facilities producing any shortfall

on sites which require the seal of “netzero”.
This project, geared to professionals
in the field of green technology, goes
far beyond the target making it the only
“net-positive” facility of its kind in
Canada. Through allocation, the surplus
energy of approximately 190,500 kwh/
year will be assigned to residential
projects which are harder to achieve the
“net-zero” status on their own site.
DelRidge and GreenLife have taken
this bold step as an example for others to
aim beyond the norm and to demonstrate
that sustainability is not just a word.
DelRidge and GreenLife believe that
their role is equally split between the
evolution of these types of facilities
and the collection and evaluation of
data for years after completion. The
commitment to verification plays a
pivotal role in the fine tuning of these
systems for future endeavors. DelRidge
and GreenLife conduct their companies
in an “open book” manner by sharing
any of their own systems and are
particularly receptive to any and all
new ideas in the field of positive and
measurable change.
new product ideas that we haven’t even
thought of yet. The ease of access to
highways makes Milton a convenient
location to access both our domestic
and U.S. customers” noted Chudleigh’s
President Dean Chudleigh.
The commercial bakery is located
within the Escarpment Business
Community just west of Highway
25, north of Highway 401 and a few
minutes south of the orchard farm.
With a strong Research &
Development focus on natural fruit
taste, the custom, state-of-the-art
equipment is operated by over 150 full
time staff at Chudleigh’s where more
than 70% of the finished products are
exported.
In recent years, Chudleigh’s has
become famous for its patented Apple
Blossoms (individually portioned
pastries) which, along with its pies,
molten-lava cakes and other high quality,
highly unique bakery products are
marketed in the U.S., and increasingly
in Asia, Europe and Mexico.
Chudleigh’s is growing

Sun Products leases entire
400,000 square foot
facility in Milton
Chudleigh’s is in the process of
expanding its commercial bakery
facility from the current 82,000 square
feet to 110,000 square feet. Since
establishing its 100 acre orchard farm
in 1957, which still flourishes today
and attracts thousands of guests each
year, the company has responded to the
business success enjoyed on the retail
bakery side first by moving into its
present facility in 2007 and now with
its most recent addition.
“We are very excited about our
current expansion as it seems the
food industry didn’t realize there was
a recession. The additional area will
give us the opportunity to hire even
more talented staff to help develop
The Sun Products Corporation, a
leading North American manufacturer
and marketer of fabric care and
household products with annual sales
of more than $2 billion, has leased the
entire 405,000 square foot facility at
8690 Escarpment Way. In doing so,
the company has eliminated the largest
existing industrial building from the
real estate market in town, positively
reinforcing the fact that Milton remains
a hot market in which to invest. While
Sun Products has made the investment,
the brand new manufacturing/
warehouse facility is operated by DB
Schenker Logistics.
Schenker of Canada started operations
in 1953; in just over half a century the

business has grown to include over 40
branches and 1,700 employees. Today
it is one of the top Logistics Service
Providers in Canada. Outside Canada
its global enterprise has annual sales
of 19 billion euros. With 91,000
employees and 2,000 offices around
the world, DB Schenker is one of the
world’s leading providers of integrated
logistics services, offering land
operations, air and ocean freight as well
as comprehensive logistics solutions
and global supply chain management
from a single source.
Headquartered in Wilton, Connecticut
with an office in Toronto, Sun Products
was formed in September 2008 from
the combination of Unilever’s North
American fabric care business and
Huish Detergents, Inc, a leading
manufacturer of private label laundry
and dish products.
Sun Products
brands include Sunlight laundry, Wisk,
Snuggle and All-laundry.
These two companies are the latest
world-class organizations to take
advantage of locating in Milton.
Additional land adjacent to the
existing building is available and allows
for further expansion up to 580,000
square feet.
Phoenix Contact

Headquarters in Milton
Phoenix Contact Ltd., a leading
developer and manufacturer of industrial
electrical and electronic technology
has completed construction of their
new Canadian headquarters. The new
facility is representative of Phoenix
Contact’s dedication to quality and
style. Some of the features of the
new 25,000 sq.ft. building is an airconditioned warehouse bathed in
natural light, a large visitor centre to
house training for 50 persons, a valueadded solution centre and a modern
electrical automation lab. “Our rapid growth over the past
years has now made it impractical for
us to remain in our current building,”
stated Paul Bastel, Marketing and
Communications Manager, “Milton is
a perfect location with proximity to the
highway and a very business friendly
environment”.
Phoenix Contact has supported the
Canadian market for over 25 years with
technical and commercial service, sales,

and to a trusting partnership towards
their customers, sales and distribution
partners with common benefits. The new
facility will be the launch pad for the
present and future skilled and educated
workforce to take the company to be
the recognized leader in the industry.
Founded over 80 years ago in
Germany, Phoenix Contact ensures
global customer proximity with its
40 subsidiaries and representation in
another 30 countries. Its diverse product
range includes components and system

abm Canada Inc. Expands
and Relocates to Milton
As abm Canada began to grow in
customer base and product diversity
it became more and more apparent
that the current facility was no longer
sufficient. After long discussions with
various cities and great considerations,
Milton proved to have everything abm
Canada needed for future growth.
abm Canada has found a great
location in Milton with a diverse range
of benefits. The new facility is close
to highways, which allows for easy
pick up of goods by carriers, has direct
rail car access, which allows for cost
effective raw material shipment, and
had the space required for the size and
complexity of the business.
The previous location was 122,000
sq feet. In Milton abm Canada was able
to purchase 20 acres of land and build a
200,000 sq foot facility with continued

expansion room of up to 400,000 sq feet.
Other key expansions included pallet
positions and machine space. There
are 18,000 pallet positions in the new
Milton facility, up from 7,800 pallet
positions in the former facility, when
the space is fully racked. Moreover,
machine space increased from 13 in the
old facility to a potential of 40 machines
in the new Milton location.
Another key factor in choosing
Milton was the attractive labour pool,
providing a strong and well educated
work force for abm Canada and its
future growth plan.
Chris Koehler, abm Canada President,
is proud of the new facility and believes
“the move to Milton has increased abm
Canada’s cost competitive nature and
ability to meet and exceed the demands
of our customers, while at the same
time contributing to Milton’s growing
manufacturing industry”.

A Revolutionary Approach to Staffing
Staffing often tops the list of
challenges for businesses, regardless of
the industry. Having the right number
of staff at the right time is a common
issue facing all businesses, particularly
those whose operations are subject
to seasonal or project related ups and
downs.
Changes in the flow of orders,
contracts and client requests easily
cause peaks and troughs in workload
requirements. Companies try to plan
their employment cycles ahead of time,
but that can be as tricky as coming up
with a budgeting forecast that will hit
the mark further down the road.
Estimates do not guarantee accuracy
and inaccuracies can be costly. If a
company ends up understaffed for
example, it could be paying more than
it should to hire additional temporary
staff. Alternatively, it might be
overstaffed during an unexpected idle
time. Either way, both situations have
a direct and negative impact on the
bottom line, and it hurts.
Diving into Pooling
Resources
One solution to this problem is
closely collaborating with companies
that have similar fluctuating human
resource needs and pooling resources.
Take for example Company
A and Company B. Company A
underestimated the number of staff
required and is faced with a busy period
for which it needs more people. It could
hire additional staff on a permanent
basis, and run the risk of having to
lay them off later. Alternatively, it
could hire staff temporarily through an
agency, which can be very expensive.
On the other hand, Company B has
less work than originally anticipated
because of a project delay, and has
permanent staff members that are idle.
If these companies were brought
together to pool their human resources,
they could solve the problem efficiently
from a staffing and economic
standpoint. Company B would lend
their underutilized permanent staff to
Company A and invoice Company A
the staff salary cost. The employees
may not even have to work in a different
location. Depending on the work to be
done, employees could carry out the
tasks for Company A from their usual
place of work at Company B.
Company B saves money by offsetting
downtime costs and increasing its
bottom line. Company A obtains the
resources of suitably qualified and
recommended staff. Paying salary
costs for these resources is more costeffective that hiring them through a
staffing agency. Employees benefit
by being able to work on different
projects, in a different environment and
broadening their horizons.
The Bigger Picture
Pooling of human resources can apply
to countless branches of commerce and
industry. In fact, there are many roles
that are not industry dependent and are
transferable from one to the other.
The greatest asset that any business
possesses is its staff. But for the most
part, staff is also the most expensive
item on the profit and loss statement.
Over the years, many efforts have been
made in the workplace to increase
working efficiency, yet virtually
nothing has been done to create more
efficient use of staff.
We could see far greater economic
efficiency by bringing together
companies that have fluctuating staffing
problems. While that may mean
developing closer working relationships
with competitors, resolving staffing
shortages or overages through pooling
can have considerable benefits from
both an economic and employee
retention standpoint.
In most cases, the fear of “industrial
espionage” is no more of an issue than
hiring people from a staffing agency.
On the contrary, whether you are the
“borrower” or the “lender”, staff is
entirely in the hands of each individual
company, which is in control of the
process. It is the company that decides
to whom it will lend its staff and from
whom it will borrow. This is a luxury
that traditional recruitment solutions do
not allow for.
Good Will Hunting
Pooling can also extend to permanent
staffing needs. A company may need
to downsize and permanently reduce
a full-time employee to part-time, or
terminate an employment contract
altogether. Other companies can look
to them to tap into a rich source of
qualified, recommended personnel.
In helping employees find alternative

employment, companies are able to
gain goodwill and respect, both of
which help image and reputation.
Being flexible when managing fluctuating staffing needs can be a challenge,
but ultimately it will be beneficial for
everyone concerned – from shareholders, to companies to employees.
Before laying off employees, or calling
a staffing agency, pooling is well worth
a closer examination.
