Ben MacDonald: Ambassador
By Lynne Brown
A young person with a natural gift for communication and public relations, Ben MacDonald,
has been selected as Rotary Ambassador, Easter Seals Campaign for a second term. Having
spent 2015 as the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie's Easter Seals Ambassador, this 15-yearold student from White Pines C. & V. S. is continuing in the role of Ambassador. Ben is the
perfect blend of champion, sincere heart and motivational speaker, as SaultOnline discovered when welcomed into the home of the MacDonald family. Two dogs named Morty and
Brutus, Ben's parents Heidi and Scott, who are two local teachers, and sister Meghan make
up the MacDonald household.
Published by Superior Media (Sault) Ltd.
Reflecting on his year as Easter Seals Ambassador for 2015, Ben shared “I really enjoyed
getting to express my thoughts; being able to talk to a whole range of people, and thank
them for their contributions. Letting people know that they really are making a difference.
It's not just a faceless organization(Easter Seals); it has a face and a voice. Easter Seals
supports people who rely on them, some tremendously, for help.” (see page 2)

“I feel like by directly connecting with people, it helps to let
them know that their contributions are truly making a
difference. As the ambassador, I want to extend my gratitude for everything people do within the organization, as well
as people who support the Easter Seals financially.”
“As I get older, my muscles will get weaker, and we will need
help with things like a ramp for the van, travel expenses for
medical appointments, things like that. These are all things
that Easter Seals will be able to help us with in the future.”
One of the highlights for Ben personally in his 2015 ambassadorship, was speaking to staff of the TD Bank. “Last year, we
did TD Bank's Change for Change Campaign.” Prior to the
campaign unfolding, Ben went and spoke to staff at the TD
Bank who he found to be very welcoming. “I gave a 'pep talk'
about how their support works to the benefit of Easter Seals
and all of its patrons. They were very receptive and some of
them even got 'teared up' a little. That I could have such an
impact on people, was very special for me,” he said. Speaking
with Ben MacDonald, it is easy to understand how his words
would serve as inspiration for people to be moved into a 'call
to action.'
“We'll be looking into ramps and lifts for the house,” shared
Scott. “Every donation does matter,” said Ben. “It does add
up. Take the TD Bank campaign, for example. We were
counting pennies and more pennies; at the end of the day all
of those pennies were totalled up, and equated to a lot. Every
little bit does help.”
Over 30 volunteers came together on Saturday, March 1st,
2014 at the Cambrian Mall to roll the coin for deposit.
“Easter Seals is an amazing organization,” said Scott.
“There was a fervor on the day that I spoke to people at the
TD Bank. They were very eager to support Easter Seals and
people told me that my speech had really ignited a fire in
them to want to help. I felt very honoured to be able to
support Easter Seals in this way.”
Interests for Ben include reading books and playing video
games. He particularly likes music and being part of The SemiPinetones Band (Grade 9/10,White Pines C. & V. S). He
enjoys performing at coffee houses where the Pinetones and
Semi-Pinetones play together. “I find that quite enjoyable,”
said Ben.
Ben is interested in pursuing writing and has a special interest
in psychology. “What my career will be, I'm not entirely sure,
but I hope it involves writing in some way.”
“Ben loves to write. He's extremely creative, and has written
several stories, raps, poems,” shared Scott MacDonald, Ben's
proud dad. ” “He got the highest overall academic average in
high school last year.” Outstanding Ben! Congratulations.
Add high achiever to the list of attributes for this Easter Seals
Ambassador.
With mobility as an issue for Ben, he uses an electric wheelchair at school. Generally, for short distances, he is very good
on his feet. Ben was diagnosed with Duchene's Muscular

The annual Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie's Easter Seals
Telethon gets underway Sunday, April 3rd, noon to 7 p.m.
The live broadcast (Shaw TV, cable channel 10) from the
Municipal Council Chambers will include Ben doing some of
the on-air hosting duties along with returning host, local
broadcaster extraordinaire, Jeffrey McNeice from Today's
Best Country, 104.3 Country, McNeice in the Morning. These
two fellows will, no doubt, keep things hopping as pledges,
groups and individuals pour into Council Chambers at City
Hall.
Thank you 2016 Easter Seals Ambassador Ben MacDonald
for all you do to cheer on Rotary and the Easter Seals organizations. Between studying and music, reading and writing,
Ben MacDonald finds time to be a true change maker in our
community. Magnifique. C'est Bon.
'Easter Seals is a non-profit organization that helps youth
with physical disabilities gain independence, freedom, and
realize their potential through such initiatives as offering
monetary assistance to families purchasing mobility
equipment and communication devices, and sending
children to fully accessible summer camps. These programs reduce the financial strain on families caring for a
child with a severe disability, which can cost an additional
$40,000 each year. (continued page 5)

Your 2-week forecast
By Craig Huckerby
As promised, most of the snow melted away before the first official day of Spring, but
that doesn't mean we've seen the last of it. As typical at this time of year, the cold air
wants to stay in place while the warmer air continues to build in, as a result we see a
roller coaster of temperatures until the third week in April. Expect to see some major
warmth move in for the end of April , meanwhile we're going to see a mixed bag of
conditions. Here's a two week summary of what to expect. n

Easter Seals Ontario runs Camp Merrywood, with activities
that include canoeing, kayaking, extended out-trips, and
sailing; Camp Woodeden where sledge hockey, wheelchair
basketball, rock climbing and a fully accessible high ropes
course are some of the activities offered. Eligibility for Easter
Seals camp is for young people between the ages of 8-18
years as of July 1st (of the program year) and are registered
with Easter Seals Ontario.
A 5-day Family Camp is also offered at each site, and according to the website, eastersealscamps.org, both dates in
August 2016 are FULL! That certainly says something about
the importance of Easter Seals programming.
Easter Seals Camp Merrywood, built in 1948, is located on
a beautiful peninsula stretching out into Big Rideau Lake.
The camp sits on 30 acres of property between Smiths
Falls and Perth in Eastern Ontario. Overlooking the Thames

collection of trees/plants from around the world, and
beautiful Japanese influenced architecture. Originally
known as “Woodholm,” Easter Seals acquired the property

Tech Tutors Onsite to
the rescue!
By Craig Huckerby
Computers and the internet has changed the way the world
operates. Today you can practically do anything with
computers, from dating to shopping and banking. There's
bound to be a time when your computer isn't working the
way it should be, maybe you've downloaded something by
mistake and infected your computer or maybe you don't
know everything there is to know about your digital devices.
The young married couple did their homework to see if any
support service was available that would deliver the one-onone service they could provide. Much to their surprise there
wasn't, and Tech Tutors Onsite was born. Using their skills of
customer service and computer know-how, Melissa and
Marcus are making endless house calls to train and offer
support with home PCs, tablets, phones and even bluetooth
applications.
“We focus on three primary things; one, it will be at the house
service; two, seminars such as how to stay safe online and
three, group tutoring sessions,” Marcus said.
“We want to be the service where if people want to learn
something or have a problem with a program or software, we
will do anything it takes to help them.”
But where do you turn and who do you trust?
For Melissa and Marcus Jakimik who started Tech Tutors
Onsite, the idea of the business came from their own personal
experiences of helping out family members with their computer concerns. “There was a gap in the market for this type
of support in the city,” Melissa said.
The largest part of their clientele are seniors, who may have
trouble with e-mail or navigating around their screens and
organizing files. The Tech Tutors stress internet safety with
their senior customers. Seniors often fall victim to internet
fraud and other scams such as Microsoft support calling
them on the phone telling them that their computer has a

virus and they must go to a
specific website that gives

access. At that point all the
information on their computer
has been compromised
according to the Tech Tutors.
“Microsoft will not call you
with support,” Marcus said.
“I have to tell you it's very gratifying when
you can make something easier for them
and you can see it on their face that they
now understand it,” Marcus said.
The business is fairly new and

The couple will also assist those who need knowledge of what
type of device they should be buying. “If the customers are
looking at buying a desktop or laptop or tablet, we will come
with them and help them decide and talk them through it and
then go set it all up at their house,” Marcus said.
The couple both have degrees in the field with 15 years
experience in the computer industry.

Just get out...
By Julie Hryniewicz
So, we lost an hour of sleep last week
and that, alone, is enough to get us
frustrated. At the same time, it is
lighter outside for an hour longer,
effective immediately. Considering
that being outside in nature, fresh air,
sunlight and mild activity have been
proven to improve our health, I guess I
will take any extra sunlight that I can
get.
There was a study done, at the
University of Rochester, with 537
college students, where five separate
experiments were utilized, involving
20 minutes of an indoor walk, a nature
walk, or visualizing indoor, outdoor,
cityscapes or natural landscapes. The
results concluded that being outside in
nature for just 20 minutes a day was
enough to significantly increase
vitality and energy levels.
This research is consistent with other
studies that suggest exposure to
nature, images of nature and being
outdoors in nature increases wellbeing in 90% of people. Although I
have been aware of this remarkable
energy booster for years, it has taken
this recent spring feeling weather to
nudge me back outside.
Yesterday, my grandson and I took a
long walk with his stroller and today,
as I was driving home from picking up
my daughter, I pulled over on the side
of the road and did an impromptu
nature walk. I grabbed my phone, my
keys and began trudging along a
creek path.
Although sinking up to my ankles in
melting snow and mud, before my
shoes were soaking wet, and I was only
out there about 15 minutes, it was well
worth the effort. It was enough time to
take in some sunshine, get some
natural blush on my cheeks, snap some
photos and take several deep breaths
of fresh air.
I was so motivated afterwards, that
when we were done supper I strapped
on my shoes and went back out for
another walk. I love the sunshine and
fresh air and it feels great to finally get
out.
When things are falling apart around
us, when we are feeling overwhelmed,
when we are too tired and exhausted
to do anything, this just might be a
sign that it is time for us to get outside.
We are apparently fueled, renewed,
refreshed and revitalized by nature, so
find a trail, walk to the nearest park,
take a nature drive, put up a lawn chair
in your yard or create a slide show of
nature photos or videos to boost your
spirit.
throughout the week, but if you can
just carve out a few minutes, I hope
that you embrace the outdoors, take in
a sunrise, the sunset, walk the hub
trail, stroll the boardwalk, dig out your
running shoes (or rubber boots) and
capture some moments to carry you
through your week.
You just may find that the issues that
are causing you the most stress, may
melt away, for even a handful of
minutes. Considering that we can only
hold one emotion at a time, we may as
well hold on to feelings of pleasure, joy,
peace, serenity, tranquility, happiness
or contentment, for as long as
possible.
Here is to getting outside and
exploring. It's time for us to shake off
winter, stretch out our arms and finally
come out of hibernation. I beg you –
just try it! You may be amazed.

a few of them are dirt.” ~ John Muir n

Tammy Deans: Haunted
Sault Ste. Marie
By Tammy Deans
We have all had some sort of paranormal experience whether
we would like to admit it or not. Was that simply a shadow or
was it something more? Was that your name being called or
were you hallucinating? Why did your
entire body suddenly become covered
with goose bumps and your hair stand
on end for seemingly no good reason?
The unexplainable can and does have
a tendency to be passed off as merely
“nothing” or “imagination”.
Let's say for a moment you weren't
imagining it but rather you actually did
have a paranormal experience. Who
would you talk to about it and more
importantly, would they believe you?
Would it affect your reputation, your job, or your relationships? Many stay quiet and deny any such unexplainable
experiences because of these fears.
As the owner of and lead investigator for Haunted Sault Ste.
Marie, I have had my fair share of experiences and have been
entrusted with stories from many others. One such story may
make your skin crawl and tempt you to leave the lights on while
you are sleeping tonight. To ensure anonymity, the following
story may have names, locations and any identifying information changed for privacy. Although I assure you, the story is in
fact based on what they believe to be true accounts.
I live in an old house in the downtown core of Sault Ste. Marie.
Sadly, my home has a somewhat tragic history. Many years
ago, there was a man in his forties who lived there. He was said
to be unstable mentally and was a bit of a recluse. After
allegations of sexual assault and rape were made by a young
girl in the neighbourhood, he ended his life. He was found in the
bedroom, my bedroom, where he bled to death after slitting
his wrists.
had no choice but to go back to bed. It took longer than usual
to fall asleep that night and I was sure to sleep facing the door
in the case of an ambush.
A few weeks later and once again, lying in bed, though this
time in the dark and waiting for the blissful peace of sleep to
consume me. I had rolled over to face the wall with my back to
the door, tucked in quite comfortably and ready to doze off,
when suddenly the air felt thick. My heart started pounding in
my chest and my breathing became shallow. It was as though I
was paralyzed by fear and couldn't turn my body around to
look at the doorway.
I listened with my eyes wide open as I
heard the sound of feet shuffling on
the floor and then light footsteps
coming toward my bed one by one.
Then it happened. Someone or
something tugged at the blanket from
up by my neck and pulled it down past
my shoulders as I felt a hot breathe on
the back of my neck. I bounced out of
bed pulling the blankets with me as if
it would somehow protect me from
this, THING! When I was finally on my
feet and facing the door, I could see nothing. Nothing was
there. I heard it and felt it, yet nothing could be seen. I could
not explain what it was. Although the experience doesn't seem
real, for me the fear and panic I felt was definitely genuine.
This is just one person's story. There are many, many others. If
you have a story you would like to share, please submit it
directly to Tammy Deans' email, [email protected].
Please be sure to request anonymity if you so choose.
Ask Tammy — Reader Question:
I am recently divorced and feeling ready to move forward after
a long and stressful legal battle. Could you please tell me if I will
ever find love in my life again? – Anonymous
It all started one evening while in bed watching the some late
night TV. Alone in the house and having no pets, the house
should have been silent with no other sounds other than the
sitcom I was viewing. Suddenly, there was the sound of
footsteps coming up the stairs and slowly down the hall in the
direction of my bedroom. I hit the 'mute' button on the remote
and listened. Nothing. Hitting the 'mute' button again, the
television came alive.
Tammy's Psychic Answer:
Thank you for your question. You need
time to lick your wounds and refocus
your life and your intentions. I do see a
special someone coming into your life
within the next 8-10 months, but
without taking the time to heal in the
meantime, you risk the possibility of
pushing him away when he does appear. Now is the time for
you to manifest what it is you want and need in life and you
can do so by putting yourself at the top of your priority list
for a change. You may benefit from the peaceful and loving
vibrations of a rose quartz crystal. Carry it on your person
for best results and remember to place it beside your bed at
night.
A few nights later, as I yet again lay in bed watching the TV, I
hear the familiar sound of footsteps. This time I didn't 'mute'
the sound and slowly got out of bed and made my way over to
the doorway. With one quick move of my body, I darted into
the hallway as if to catch someone standing there. But once
again, nothing. I had no explanation for what I just heard and

2 pounds small to medium
EGGPLANT, cut into 1/4-inchthick slices
1. Bring 6 quarts of water to a boil in a large pot, and add 2 tablespoons salt.
SALT and freshly ground BLACK
PEPPER
2. Meanwhile, in a 10- to12-inch saute pan, heat 3 tablespoons of the olive oil over mediumhigh heat until almost smoking. Working in batches, saute the eggplant slices, seasoning them
with salt and pepper, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. Transfer to a plate lined
with paper towels to drain.
6 tablespoons EXTRA-VIRGIN
OLIVE OIL
3. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a 9-by-12-inch backing dish with 1 tablespoon of the
olive oil.
1 pound PENNE
4. Cook the penne in the boiling water for 2 minutes short of the package instructions; it
should still be quite firm. Drain and rinse under cold water until cool. Drain very well, place
in a large bowl, and toss with 1 cup of the tomato sauce.
2 cups BASIC TOMATO SAUCE
1 cup TOASTED BREAD
CRUMBS
1/2 cup freshly grated PECORINO
ROMANO
10 fresh BASIL LEAVES, roughly
torn
An 8-ounce piece of RICOTTA
SALATA, for grating
5. Cover the bottom of the baking dish with 1/4 cup of the tomato sauce. Top with half the
bread crumbs, then add half the pasta. Arrange half of the eggplant slices, overlapping them
slightly, on top of the pasta. Dot about 1/4 cup of tomato sauce over the eggplant, and top
with half of the pecorino and half of the basil. Top with the remaining pasta, arrange the
remaining eggplant over the pasta, and dot with the remaining tomato sauce. Sprinkle with the
remaining pecorino and basil, and then the remaining bread crumbs, and drizzle with the
remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil.
6. Bake for 45 minutes. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Place a generous portion of
pasta on each plate, grate ricotta salata over, and serve.

Timber, Easy and
Justice visit ARCH
By ARCH Hospice
Careful selection is given when matching a K9 with their
handler. As Constable Kelly mentioned, Police dogs typically
live with their handler and the pair are often on call 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week. As a result, it is crucial that the K9 and
officer bond. Constable Kelly and Timber have been working
together for years and the bond they share is immediately
noticeable.
While Constable Kelly talked with staff
and volunteers (and Timber received
plenty of admiration), officers Don and
Dan brought Justice and Easy to meet
ARCH residents. The Police dogs were
incredibly gentle as they interacted with
residents. Justice, the shy and sweet
Sheppard, even climbed into bed with
one resident and relished in all of the
attention. It was a moment words can't
describe.
On Wednesday, March 16th, ARCH
Hospice was treated to a very special visit:
Constable Barry Kelly of the OPP, Dan
Turco of the Sault Ste. Marie Police
Service, and Don Abbott from Canada
Border Services Agency, brought along
their K9 colleagues. Timber and Justice,
two beautiful German Sheppard dogs, and
Easy, an energetic and lovable Springer
Spaniel, who visited with residents, staff,
and volunteers.
The Ontario Provincial Police has partnered with the K9
program for 51 years. German Sheppard dogs are the most
commonly chosen breed due to their keen sense of smell,
athleticism, and trainability. To the officers that work with
these canines every day, they are much more than just dogs:
they are family.
Constable Kelly, an OPP officer for the last 22 years, was kind
enough to talk with ARCH staff and volunteers about his K9
counterpart, Timber, their relationship, and what it takes to
be a K9 handler.
Police dogs undergo 4 months of intensive training at the
OPP Academy Canine Training Centre in Gravenhurst. These
dogs begin their training as early as 18-24 months old. Upon
completion of the initial 4 month training period, K9 and
handler continue to receive refresher training every 8 weeks.

appreciated. Thank you Constable Kelly and officers Don and

Remember When,
We had the Sault Locks?
By Craig Huckerby
It's hard to imagine Sault Ste. Marie without its locks, what a different
place this would be if the Sault Locks were never built. Sault Michigan is
home to one of the busiest locks in the world. The Canadian side,
not so much. But there was a reason why a Canadian lock was built
in the 18th century, long before the locks became a vital link across
the river.
Prior to that, canoes and small boats used a small passage in 1797
built by the Northwest Fur Company on the Canadian side of the
river. The navigational lock measured 38 feet long. This lock
remained in use until destroyed in the War of 1812.
The canal was part of the shipping route from the Atlantic Ocean to
Lake Superior. It includes a lock to bypass the rapids on the St. Marys
River.
On July 20, 1814 an American force destroyed the North West
Company depot on the north shore of the St. Marys River. Since the
Americans were unable to capture Fort Michilimackinac, the British
forces retained control of the Sault. The lock was destroyed in
1814 in an attack by U.S. forces during the War of 1812.
Congress passed an act in 1852 granting 750,000 acres of public land to the State of Michigan as compensation to the
company that would build a lock permitting waterborne commerce between Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes.
In 1870, the United States refused the steamer Chicora, carrying Colonel Garnet Wolseley permission to pass through the
locks at Sault Ste Marie. The Wolseley Expedition incident led to the construction of a Canadian Sault Ste. Marie Canal, which
was completed in 1895.
The construction of the canal and lock was completed in 1895. At that time it was the largest lock and first electrically operated
lock in the world. The canal is about 1.6 kilometres long and originally the lock portion was 274 metres long and 18 metres wide.
This canal formed the last link in an all-Canadian navigation system stretching from the St. Lawrence River to Lake Superior.
Designed and built by Canadians, the canal incorporated several engineering innovations. It was the world's longest lock and the
first to operate with electrical power. It was also novel in using an emergency swing dam to protect the lock in case of accident.
Electricity was generated on site in the powerhouse.
On June 9, 1909 the locks were seriously damaged when the Perry G.
Walker, owned by the Gilchrist Transportation Co. of Cleveland, Ohio,
crashed into the south main gate, forcing it back and allowing the force
of water to push the north main gate over. The rush of water threw the
Perry G. Walker back and carried two other ships downstream, one of
which struck the south main gate, breaking it diagonally in two. The rush
of water through the destroyed locks was stopped by activation of the
Emergency Swing Dam, allowing repairs to commence. Amazingly, there
was no loss of life or injury associated with this disaster, and repairs
required only 12 days, with the bridge reopening on June 21, 1909.
Due to a wall failure in 1987, the historic lock was shut down indefinitely. A new lock, built within the old lock, was opened in 1998 and is
77 metres long, 15.4 metres wide, 13.5 metres deep. The canal is
used for recreational and tour boats; major shipping traffic uses the
U.S. locks. n
