About the Product Navigator
The EUMETSAT Product Navigator is used to search and obtain details about four types of
resources held by EUMETSAT:

Climate: describes a climate product type

Dataset: describes a satellite product type

Document: describes documents available from EUMETSAT

Software: describes software available from EUMETSAT
The following search methods are available to search for the above:

Simple Search: searches for single or multiple keywords (and variations) across all
metadata fields (suitable for general searches)

Extended Search: Using “AND” searches can be conducted across a subset of
given metadata fields (ideal for targeted searches)

Browse by Theme: tree-based access to resources based on themes i.e. satellite,
instrument, category, societal benefit area or dissemination.
All three searches (Simple, Extended and Browse by Theme) are accessible via separate
URLs. You can bookmark your favourite search type as the default start page. The URLs
are:

http://navigator.eumetsat.int/discovery/Start/Explore/Quick.do

http://navigator.eumetsat.int/discovery/Start/Explore/Extended.do

http://navigator.eumetsat.int/discovery/Start/Explore/Thematic.do
Detailed information is available for each of these search methods later in this guide.
The Product Navigator starts by default with the “Simple Search” form. Clicking on the
“Search” button without any text will display all available resources.
Try to be as specific as possible when entering search terms; e.g. MSG wind, GOES South
America fire, or combine two or more terms with quotation marks, e.g. “sea surface temperature”.
Searches can be further targeted by selecting one or more resource type(s) to be searched
(e.g. dataset, document and/or software),
1
Browser support and settings
The Product Navigator has been tested in several browsers and versions, including:

MS Internet Explorer version 8.0

Firefox version 3.6

Safari version
In order for the Product Navigator to work correctly, your browser will need to have the
following settings enabled:

Accept cookies

JavaScript activated
The recommended screen resolution is 1280x1024 pixels.
2
Searching in detail
The Product Navigator offers:

Simple Search: a quick search function that employs fuzzy logic – suitable for
general searches.

Extended Search: a targeted search with the option to filter by multiple metadata
attributes – recommended for users looking for a specific product type.

Browse by Theme: a pre-defined tree navigation of products based on several
themes, including satellite, category (marine, land, etc.), societal benefit area
(disasters, weather etc.) and dissemination types.
In the Extended Search, you can also limit the results to a selected geographical area by
selecting the spatial extent.
Simple Search
The Simple Search function employs fuzzy logic when searching metadata, and can be
made on the basis of a few inputs.
These parameters include:

Climate: a climate product type

Dataset: a satellite product type

Document: documents available from EUMETSAT

Software: software available from EUMETSAT
3
A text input field is used for entering search terms, either individually or in combinations.
The search is by default whole-word based. For example, searching for the term “cea” would
not return the word “ocean”. However, by entering the terms “ocean” or part of the word
between asterisks (*) i.e. “*cea*” the search would be successful.
The following syntax types are available for a Simple Search:

Combined terms (phrases) should be enclosed in quotation marks (“), e.g. "sea
surface temperature"

Wildcards can be inserted for indeterminate characters, e.g. *land, North*, *use*
For best results, try to use multiple search terms; e.g. MSG wind, GOES south America fire –
or combine two or more terms with quotation marks e.g. “sea surface temperature”.
Note that the Simple Search does not distinguish between upper and lower case letters.
Note that Simple Search has an autocomplete. After three characters are entered an
automatic search for matching keywords is made and a list of hits is presented. The list is
amended as further letters are entered:
Extended Search
We recommend that you use the Extended Search whenever possible. With the Extended
Search you can refine your search criteria by choosing subsets of attributes. In general,
filtering using two or more criteria delivers the most accurate results.
4
Extended Search attributes include:
Collection Type
Restrict the resource to be searched:

Climate: describes a climate product type

Dataset: satellite product types

Document: documents available from EUMETSAT

Software: software available from EUMETSAT
One or more entries can be selected by holding down the CTRL key while selecting other
entries with the left mouse button .
Societal Benefit Area
Select one or more benefits if you want to search for a specific societal benefit area.
As shown below one or more entries can be selected by holding down the CTRL key while
selecting other entries with the left mouse button.

Selecting the button “Define an Area of Interest” displays a global map allowing the user to
select an area.
Hold down the SHIFT key and the left mouse button and drag the mouse to select an area of
interest. Once selected, close the window with the close icon to accept the area.
Access Constraint
7
Find “open Access” collections while activating the access constraint field.
Show EUMETSAT Data only
Find Data from the EUMETSAT Application Ground Segment (Central Facility and Satellite
Application Facilities).
On the menu to the left-hand side under “Settings”, the “Auto Hit Counter” can be turned on
or off. When activated, you will see the number of hits change as you tick check boxes or
enter search strings.
The setting “EUMETSAT Data” will affect the sort order of the returned results. “EUMETSAT
Data” in ascending order, will first show all resources of EUMETSAT in alphabetic order followed by non-EUMETSAT resources. In descending order non-“EUMETSAT Data is shown
first.
Browse By Theme
When browsing by theme a search is executed based on a tree structure. Selecting a
particular theme will display all resources fulfilling the criteria.
At upper levels of the hierarchy, you can explore the themes’ directories. Once a topic is
selected ( directory or
document), all the entries associated with or subordinate to the
theme will be displayed in a results list.
Common Settings for Searches
Define your settings for sorting search results or the number of hits during query creation.
8
If you want to change the order of the result list displayed, select your preference under
“Search > Settings”.
Modifying the “Auto Hit Counter” will affect only the ‘Extended Search’. Available hits are
dynamically shown (“Number of Records”) when defining or changing query parameters.
This capability is configurable: switch on/off within the “Settings” Dialog. The default setting
is “switched-on”.
9
