Welcome
MOUNT RUSHMORE RESORT
An experience like no ot her
Welcome to our beautiful Mount
Rushmore KOA at Palmer Gulch, a
special place nestled among the
pines of the Black Hills where you’ll
have an experience like no other.
We’re especially excited to show you all that our
KOA has to offer. KOA has awarded our wonderful
campground “resort” status because of all the
amenities and activities we offer. We will do all we can
to make the 2016 camping season one full of great
memories to last a lifetime.
We like to say, “Palmer Gulch is the place where you
can do as much or as little as you please.” Fill your days
with fun activities—from horseback riding to splashing
down our water slide. Or you can just sit back, relax
and soak up the stunning beauty of the Black Hills.
MEET OUR TEAM
Mike Atkinson, our General Manager, would
like to personally welcome you to one of the
largest KOA campgrounds in the country.
Mike is from Billings, Montana, where he
worked for nine years at KOA Headquarters.
Mike has assembled a great team to help 2016 run
like clockwork. Ben Larsen is our new Guest Services
Manager. He and his family have called the Black Hills
home for nine years. Shelby Thomas is in charge of
group sales and coordination. Billie Getman, Manager
of Mount Rushmore Lodge at Palmer Gulch, returns for
her 19th year in 2016. Another returning veteran is Retail
Manager Staci Anderson. Staci handles all the buying,
set up and operations of our GREAT retail outlets at the
resort. Last but not least, Dean Karschnik. Dean is the
Facilities Manager for our beautiful resort.
Left to right: Mike, Billie, Staci, Ben, Shelby & Dean.
THEY SHINE FOR YOU
Watch for the SummerShiners while you are at the resort.
They are Christian college students who come to the Mount
Rushmore Resort at Palmer Gulch from all over the United
States to live, work and play. They are paid staffers who
supervise activities, such as the jumping pillow, mini golf and
waterslide, among other duties. They stay busy on their own
time performing skits and leading family-friendly activities or
casual worship services.
MEET OUR GROUP
COORDINATOR
Find Shelby for information and to
help plan your family gathering, group
event or company retreat. She’s eager
to work with you to make your special
occasion truly memorable.

In 1925, a mining engineer had a vision for
developing a country club in the Black Hills. He
and other investors purchased land along Palmer
Creek, at the base of Harney Peak, just five miles
west of Mount Rushmore.
Palmer Gulch
The Mount Rushmore Resort at Palmer
Gulch has a rich history.

LONG HISTORY
OF SERVING
GUESTS
Over the years, through several ownership
changes, cabins were built and golf, horseback
riding, picnicking and touring the Black Hills
became popular activities. In 1962, new owners
returned the golf course to its natural state of
valleys and meadows and focused on travelers
looking for a dude ranching experience.
Our current owners took over in 1972 with the
vision to further develop The Mount Rushmore
Resort at Palmer Gulch into a destination full of
great camping sites, camping cabins and other
quality lodging options. It became affiliated with
KOA in 1976.

CHUCK WAGON DINNER
GRAPES & GRINDS
Enjoy an authentic horse-drawn, covered-wagon ride

candied nuts or designer fudge made daily.

FOUR GREAT
SHOPPING
EXPERIENCES
GENERAL STORE
This is your first-stop shop in the
campground registration building. The
General Store is full of groceries, RV/
camping supplies, jewelry, clothing
and souvenirs. You can find a western
necklace or purse in the cowgirl
section, or get a Palmer Gulch or
Mount Rushmore sweatshirt to wear
on a cool summer night.
OUTPOST STORE
The Outpost Store is in the Fun Zone,
near the splash pad, jumping pillow
and pool. It has a great selection of
outdoor games, pool toys, gliders and
cowboy accessories. You can build
yourself a camping buddy with our
Stuffin’ Party Machine. Whether it’s
a bear, raccoon or puppy, there are
lots of clothes and accessories to fit.
Hungry for a snack? We serve up ice
cream, nachos, slushies, popcorn and
other goodies. We also have bread
and milk and other staples, as well as
campfire supplies.
GRAPES & GRINDS
You’ll want to stop for a special cup
of South Dakota roasted coffee or a
fine glass of wine at Grapes & Grinds.
You can also search the store for
wine gadgets, eco-friendly coffee
mugs and other specialty items. We
stock regional wines like the Palmer
Gulch Reserve Merlot or a selection
of Prairie Berry wines. We also offer
an assortment of Dakota Made
products. Check our schedule, because
throughout the summer we’ll have LIVE
music on the patio.
OUTPOST BIKE SHOP
We have a variety of biking trails in the
area to choose from, so you will want
to take advantage of our bike rentals,
with many models available for your
enjoyment — from fat bikes to banana
bikes. We also sell Strider bikes for the
littlest riders. These pedal-less bikes
built in Rapid City are helping kids
across the country learn to ride. We
also sell helmets, lights and other bike
accessories.

WELCOME TO LITTLE
BUDDY’S FUN ZONE
lives on!
THE LEGEND OF LITTLE BUDDY
The youngest of the five men who staked
a mining claim to sift the sands of Palmer
Creek for precious flakes of gold 150 years
ago was a massive man with a barrel chest,
long muscular arms, a hairy face and a
twinkle in his eye. No one knew his real
name. They just called him Little Buddy.
Buddy never seemed to get tired. And he
loved to entertain others on the long nights
with stories, songs and homespun poetry.
When the first sightseers came to the area, Little
Buddy knew he had found his true calling. He could
show folks the best sites to see. He served up coffee
and cowboy humor. Anywhere a guest had a need,
there was Little Buddy. He told his new friends from
around the country, “I love this place and I ain’t
never leavin’ it.”
8
| FUN Times
No one knows for sure if he ever did
leave.
Sometimes campers will swear they
can see the twinkle of an eye just
beyond the campfire’s light, and
maybe hear a rough voice chuckling
after a funny yarn. Perhaps you’ll
hear that same voice when the wind
rustles through the pines, calling out
“Get to the Gulch.”
You can tip your hat to the carving
of Little Buddy outside our main
office, and know that his spirit
surrounds all who visit this place he
loves.

BIKING TRAILS
RIDE ALONG WITH US
The Black Hills are loaded with great cycling opportunities
for all bikers. The Mickelson Trail is a hundred-mile-long
rails-to-trails route just three miles from the campground.
The Outpost Bike Shop is located at the Fun Zone and
rents Fun Cycles, Striders and Fat Bikes. ($)
Hitch a ride with Ole Alice as she hauls a load of straw
through the campground. Have a fun, relaxing hayride
with family and new friends. And we’re always looking for
eager volunteers to help us patrol the campground in our
very own fire truck. Come along for a great ride!
HIKING & WALKING
Tap your sense of outdoor adventure. Trails to Harney
