ADMISSIONS AND CREDENTIALS BOARD
A & C Board Holds 2005
Oral/Case Examinations: The
Admissions and Credentials Board
met in Chicago April 28 - May 1, 2005,
for its annual business meeting and
to consider applications. This year, the
Board considered 70 applications: 51
for Associate Fellowship by examination, three for Associate Fellowship by
Credentials, one for reinstatement of
Associate Fellowship, one for
Fellowship by examination, one for
reinstatement of Fellowship and 13
for Fellowship by Credentials.
In addition to the candidates
listed in the April issue of AAIDNEWS, this year’s Associate Fellow
candidates also included:

The A & C Board’s report about
its meeting/examination and recommendations for election of new
Associate Fellows and Fellows were
considered by the Board of Trustees
at

June

meeting.
Recommended for election were 45
of the Associate Fellow candidates
and 13 of the applicants for
Fellowship. The new credentialed
members will be inducted during
the 2005 Annual Meeting and recognized
at
the
President’s
Celebration.
Changes Effective with the
2007 Examinations: Beginning
with the 2007 oral/case examinations, all cases submitted for the
Associate Fellow and Fellow examinations must have been in function

for at least one year by the examination date. The Board reinstated
this requirement since at least one
year is needed to evaluate the
implant treatment.
Beginning with the 2007 examinations, the Board will also offer
candidates the option to submit
their cases in digitized form.
Guidelines for digitized case reports
are currently in development and
are expected to be available for distribution in late 2005.

Process at the 2005 Annual
Meeting: If you have questions

the
requirements
for
Associate Fellow and Fellow membership, the examination process or
how to prepare your case reports,
plan to attend one or more of the
three sessions that the Board will
hold during the 2005 Annual
Meeting.
During the Lunch and Learn session on Friday, October 21, Emile
Martin, DDS, chairman of the A &
C Board, and Joyce Sigmon, staff
liaison, will explain the examination requirements and process. To
participate in this session, pre-registration is required.
Some of this year’s successful
candidates will display their case
reports in the Exhibit Hall at the
following times:
Thursday, October 20, during Welcome
Reception, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
Friday, October 21, during Table
Clinics, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
In addition to seeing how these
candidates applied the guidelines for
case report preparation, these informal sessions also provide an
excellent opportunity to talk with
them about their examination experience. Board members and staff will
also be available to answer questions.
Begin the Process to Become
a
Credentialed
Member:
General members are urged to take
the first step toward Associate
Fellow by signing up for the written
part
of
the
two-part
membership examination. The
written examination will be given
four more times this year, each in a
different location:
August 5, Chicago, Illinois
October 23, Scottsdale, Arizona, in
conjunction with the 2005
Annual Meeting
November 18, Atlanta, Georgia.
December 11, Chennai, India
Applications and fees are due in
the Headquarters Office at least 30
days before each examination,
except for the examination in
Chennai, which has an application
deadline of September 23. For an
application, visit the AAID website

Sigmon
in
the
Headquarters Office.
Oral/Case Examination
Schedule Announced: The Board
has set the following schedule for
the next three annual oral/case
examinations.
May 18 – 21, 2006
May 3 – 6, 2007
April 24 – 27, 2008 (tentative)
Each year, the examinations will
be held in Chicago; and the application deadline is February 1.
The 2006 annual oral/case examination is the last one that will be
given during the three-year eligibility period of those who passed the
written examination in 2003.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I have had the privilege of attending several district meetings this
year; in fact, this has taken me from
sea to shining sea. The planning
efforts by the District Officers were
outstanding and the educational
opportunities offered to attendees
were excellent.
The Central District held a oneday meeting in February in Chicago
that featured Dr. David Vassos. He
gave an entertaining and educational program on marketing and
grafting techniques. Dr. Jeffery
Meister, the district’s PresidentElect, and his office staff conducted a
well-organized meeting.
The Western District meeting in
March was held at Loma Linda
University and included live surgeries. LLU offers a great venue for
learning and I saw a lot of new faces.
In addition, the meeting gave a
number of predoctoral and postdoctoral dental students a chance to
learn about the Academy. My thanks
to Drs. Jaime Lozada, Michael
Nishime, Nicholas Caplanis, Jay
Elliott and Duane Starr, the
Western District Officers, for organizing the meeting. I am pleased to
report that they are already planning the 2006 district meeting in
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
On to the East Coast I traveled
and New York City, where in April I
participated in the Northeast
District’s meeting held at the NYU
College of Dentistry. An assortment
of implant topics were presented, all
of which could be used on Monday
when the participants returned to
their offices. The evening cruise
around Manhattan with dinner put
an excellent finish on the day. My
thanks to Drs. Shankar Iyer and
John Minichetti for managing this
meeting. The District’s 2006 meeting
will be held in Atlantic City.
I hope to attend the Southern
District meeting in July to make it a
clean sweep of district meetings this
year. Where were you during these
meetings? Did you attend your district meeting? To make these quality
meetings a true success, our members need to “step up to the plate”
and show their thanks for the hard
work that goes into these meetings
by attending. Yes, I know we can usually find an implant meeting to
attend just about every month, but
why do we have to look for something
when we have it right here within
our Academy? Watch the newsletter
or visit our web site to confirm the
dates of our future district meetings
– and then attend. It will enhance
your implant knowledge and help
support your Academy.
I also attended a Leadership Team
Forum in Chicago presented by the
ADA along with Dr. Frank LaMar
and our Executive Director. The
meeting is designed to bring the volunteer leaders and appointed CEO
together to discuss leadership
trends. I found the session on preparing a one-page dental society
strategic plan particularly applicable
as the Academy recently adopted its
own strategic plan. Divergence of

thinking within an organization
seemed to be a theme throughout
this year’s Leadership Team Forum.
We learned about effective role negotiation and fitting leadership into
context.
I am pleased to report that the
Academy’s committees are working
hard on your behalf. The June meeting of the Board of Trustees included
a review of their progress reports.

activities.
Final plans are being implemented for the Academy’s 2005
Annual Meeting that will be held in
Scottsdale, Arizona on October 19 –
23. Make sure you attend!
New this year will be the Research
Foundation’s Golf Outing set to tee
off on October 18. This first-time
event should not be missed. Not only
is the course magnificent and the
camaraderie second to none, but you
will be supporting the Research
Foundation, a very valuable tool furthering the profession of implant
dentistry. For more information

The new office is for the mid-west states of Illinois, Ohio, Indiana,
Wisconsin and Michigan. The local representative is based in Chicago and
handles all software products for SimPlant, including Planner, Master, Pro
and the new View module. SimPlant View is the newest edition to the
SimPlant line of products. View is a free software for non-licensed customers, which allows visualization of CT studies and treatment plans.

dentists were required to have graduated from an ADA accredited dental
school, to have acquired additional
education in implant dentistry, to
have practiced implant dentistry for
a minimum of five years, to have provided implant services for more than
ten patients, and to have otherwise
proven their implant expertise. To
earn the title of Diplomate, these
dentists presented cases for review
by an expert panel of implant dentists and passed a series of written
and oral examinations sponsored by
the American Board of Oral
Implantology/ Implant Dentistry.
The examination process measured the in-depth knowledge,
proficient skills, and abilities
required for practitioners to provide
comprehensive, safe, and effective
oral implant care for the public.

NORTHEAST DISTRICT MEETING A
HUGE SUCCESS
Over 40 doctors attended the
AAID Northeast District Annual
Meeting held at New York
University’s College of Dentistry on
April 1st and 2nd.
The meeting showcased live surgery performed by Dr. Trevor
Bavar and an impressive line-up of
lecturers. Dr. Jack Piermatti spoke
on the use of CAD-CAM technology;
Dr. Charles Weiss on the successful
management of an implant practice;
Dr. Richard Elias on diagnosis and
treatment of lingual and inferior
alveolar nerve injuries and Dr. Peter
Glavas on implant overdentures. The
latest in bone grafting techniques
were presented by Dr. Joel
Rosenlicht and the newest imaging
techniques using CT scanning were
presented by Dr. Robert Miller. The
participants agreed that the entire
speaker line-up was excellent.

On Friday, a social evening aboard
the glass-enclosed Bateaux ship provided all a chance to catch up with
their colleagues in a more relaxed
setting. Everyone enjoyed an elegant
three-course dinner, dancing to the
jazz band trio and cabaret singer and
the spectacular views of the illuminated Manhattan skyline.
Dr. John Minichetti, co-chair of
the 2005 meeting, said, “This was a
great opportunity for us to demonstrate the latest surgical and
prosthetic techniques in an optimum
setting. NYU’s amphitheatre combines
surgical and lecture hall components;
it was an ideal facility for us.”

Recently, I returned from the
A&C Board’s examination of candidates for their credentials. Dr.
Emile Martin, the chairman, provided leadership, which allowed this
board to examine a record number of
applicants. Four days were required
to complete the job at hand. On certain days this entailed a 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. schedule.
The professional mind-set and responsibility placed
with the board members was reflected throughout the
process. Our Academy should be very proud of the examination process we offer. Those members who pass should
feel a great sense of accomplishment and pride. If you
have not yet taken this next step in your professional
career, now is the time. Just call AAID headquarters and
they will gladly send you an application.

newsletter. The first is “Industry News,” designed to
keep us abreast of new procedures and services that
could benefit our members. The second is an area for
personal listings. Some examples of the categories are:
buying/selling a practice, associate positions available

We are already approaching mid-year and our annual
meeting in Scottsdale is just around the corner. A list of
very impressive speakers, plus a resort (with a golf

AAID MEMBERS BECOME TV STARS
Dr. Larry Bush, a Southern
District Trustee on the AAID Board of
Trustees and Dr. Frank Recker, AAID
Legal Counsel made their television
debut on the May 12 season finale of
The Simple Life. Dr. Bush, his staff
and his office in Goodlettsville, Tenn.
were selected by the Fox network for
Episode 316 in which the realitybased series’ stars, Paris Hilton and
Nicole Richie work as interns.
Filmed in March 2005, Dr. Bush’s
operation was selected by producers
who wanted a stable dental office
that had been in existence for a long
time and offered comprehensive

dental services. The fact that Dr.
Bush’s office is state of the art and
his staff is extremely professional
also convinced the producers to offer
him the opportunity.
The decision to accept was not an
easy one for Dr. Bush. In fact, that is
how Dr. Recker and his son, Mac,
became patients for Paris and Nicole.
Dr. Bush called Dr. Recker for legal
advice when he was deciding whether
to participate in the show. It turned
out that ten-year old Mac needed a
baby tooth pulled and Dr. Recker
opted for a teeth whitening procedure. Two more stars were born.

Dr. Bush agreed to participate but
insisted that his office, his practice and
the dental profession be portrayed in
the most professional light.
The day of filming arrived. At 7 a.m.
the office was filled with a 50-person
production crew along with Dr. Bush,
his son, Allen, also a dentist in the
office, their staff and six patients. Of
course, befitting their celebrity status,
Paris and Nicole arrived fashionably
late with their bodyguards at 10:30.
Paris and Nicole assisted with
Dr.Recker’s teeth whitening and Paris
actually “pulled” Mac’s tooth, albeit
with some significant prep by Dr.

Bush. Despite receiving low marks on
professionalism when graded (F-) and
a D on understanding of dental methods, Dr. Bush was very impressed with
the hand-eye coordination demonstrated by Paris and Nicole, giving
them both an A. Both received a grade
of B for their relationship with patients
and a C for their problem-solving
skills. Overall, Dr. Bush gave them a
final grade as dental interns of C-.
Dr. Bush and his dentist son and
staff received much higher praise
from the producers of The Simple
Life. According to reports in the press
after the show aired, “the producers
of the show applauded Dr. Bush’s
team effort and reported this had
been one of the easiest intern filmings in the show’s three-year history.”

The Northeast District’s next annual meeting is scheduled for April 2006 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
EDUCATION COMMITTEE
AAID Dental Student Award: This spring, 29 dental
schools in the U.S. and Canada participated in the AAID’s
award program that recognizes undergraduate dental
students for their interest in implant dentistry, both academically and clinically. Each recipient was selected by
his or her dental school, using its established procedures
for such student awards.
In addition to a Certificate of Recognition, each award recipient received a year’s free membership in the AAID and a
complimentary registration at the 2005 AAID Annual Meeting,
which will be held in Scottsdale,Arizona, October 19 – 23, 2005.
This is the first year that the AAID Award was offered
to all of the dental schools in the U.S. and Canada. Last
year, in a pilot program, the award was presented in five
U.S. dental schools and was expanded upon the Education
Committee’s recommendation. “We are delighted with the
level of participation in the award program that recognizes these outstanding students who represent the
future of Implant dentistry and welcome them as members of the AAID,” said Kevin J. O’Grady, DDS, president.
