On June 21, nearly 1,100 PVPUSD seniors switched their tassels, tossed their caps, and took the first steps towards a bright new future. For more than 98% of them, those steps will be towards higher education. 98% is an astounding number, and the list of colleges our children were accepted to is awe-inspiring, places you need strong academic credentials to get into (for a full list, see inside). And that’s not simply a testament to their abilities. It’s a tribute to your generosity. From the time the class of 2011 started school, state budget cuts have threatened our district, our teaching staff and our programs. The only way we’ve been able to ensure that our kids got the education they deserve has been to pass the hat– and for all of us to give and give generously to PEF. This year will be no different. For now, however, let’s celebrate their achievement, their hard work, their dedication and their discipline. Congratulations, class of 2011! I have confidence that everyone will rise to the challenge of helping PEF meet its pledge to the district which supports all our students and schools. In closing, I’d like to take a moment to thank Kate Cocke, our outgoing PEF President, who has selflessly served the Foundation for the past two years. We are fortunate she will continue on as a trustee. Her dedication, leadership, and enthusiasm have guided PEF to a new level. The Peninsula Education Foundation Board is thrilled to announce that with the help of our wonderful Palos Verdes Light Waves August 2011 BRIGHT SPOTS & NEWS FLASHES PEF WELCOMES A NEW PRESIDENT I am excited and honored to be the new President of the Peninsula Education Foundation. I have great passion for PEF, and I’ve been a part of it for years. It’s an organization I love. Our family moved to California 12 years ago from Chicago and we selected Palos Verdes as our home because of the great schools. Our daughter Katie graduated from Palos Verdes High School in 2009 and our son Tyler will be a freshman this fall at PVHS. We are all so fortunate to live in a community where education is a priority and where we all work vol. 1, no. 5 community, we raised $2.5 million and fulfilled our pledge to the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District just in time for the June School Board meeting. Each June, PEF reviews its Strategic Plan and District needs and formulates its pledge for the following school year. This year, the Board challenged itself, even amidst a faltering economy, to raise its pledge from $2 million to $2.5 million. “As the foundation challenged itself with the higher pledge, our amazing community challenged itself to find the extra funds to save our classrooms from further devastating cuts,” said Kate. “We couldn’t be more thankful.” A complete list of donors is included in this issue. Accepting the check from PEF on behalf of the PVPUSD, Board of Education member Dora de la Rosa said, “The district is eternally grateful for the support of the Peninsula Education Foundation, particularly in these challenging economic times.” From bake sales and garage sales, to major donors and corporate community partners, the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula came out to raise funds and donate to what PV residents value most: a superior education! Once again, thank you for your support! PEF announces Bagdasar Scholarship Winners. The Jack Bagdasar Scholarship is an annual award given by PEF for PVPUSD graduates who are entering college to pursue an elementary school teaching career. Named for longtime teacher, principal, PVPUSD board member and PEF trustee Jack Bagdasar, this year’s scholarship was awarded to Palos Verdes High School’s Lindsay Hoffman, left, and Peninsula High’s Amanda Van Enk. Every June, PEF honors a community member who has made significant contributions in support of the youth of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.This year, the 2011 Sam Goldberg award goes to Debby Stegura, shown here with Deidre Manns, left, and PEF President Kate Cocke. A past PEF President and trustee, Debby has been actively involved in the Friends of the Library board, Booster Club, PTSA, and AYSO for over a decade. She’s also a past President of NCL and a mock-trial coach. “PEF is so pleased to award Debby the Sam Goldberg award this year,” says Kate Cocke. “Debby exemplifies the incredible volunteers we have in our community. She has touched so many children across the South Bay with her selfless hard work.” The Sam Goldberg Award is named for a founding member and first President of PEF. WALK THE WALK, SUPPORT THE SCHOOLS. SAVE THE DATE! PEF will again participate in the third annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk on Sunday, October 30th. Last year, over 800 walkers representing our community took part, earning PEF a check for $44,000– up from $7,500 in 2009. The donation amount received from Pier to Pier is based on the number of walkers from our community. This year the goal is to gather 2,000 walkers! PEF encourages every school to create walking teams of teachers, administrators, parents and students to come out and join the fun! Let’s all walk together to keep our schools great! INNOVATION Each year, PEF recognizes teachers with the PEF Chuck Miller Grants. These grants, valued up to $1,000 each, help support innovative programs that enhance teaching opportunities in the classroom. To be considered for a grant, teachers must apply and provide detailed descriptions of the projects they envision. This year, 51 teachers received grants. Two of their stories are below. Lauren Kearns, a 3rd grade teacher at Soleado Elementary, used her grant to join Roots & Shoots, a Jane Goodall Institute program that inspires young people to make positive changes happen in their environment–for people and for animals. The first step: purchasing Jane Goodall books for the classroom. Then, together with her class, she and the kids picked projects that would have a positive effect in the community for people and animals alike. They held a clothing drive, took part in community clean-ups and made care packages for shelter dogs at Rover Rescue, prompting a Rover Rescue team to come speak to the class about pet safety and care. Recently, Ms. Kearns was honored with an invitation to a Roots & Shoots leaders meeting in Palm Desert. There, Top, Lauren Kearns with Jane Goodall. Kearns used her grant to join Roots & Shoots, to help inspire her she was able to meet 3rd grade class to help others–including animals. Jane Goodall in person–an exciting experience she was able to share with her class on her return. About her PEF Chuck Miller grant, Lauren says, “You gave me the ability to bring our third grade social studies and science curriculum to life! Being a part of Roots & Shoots has been so exciting for my class and one of their highlights of third grade. Thank you, PEF!” Students from Peninsula teacher Anne Leonard’s Culinary Arts class. Below, the spread created for the Annual Honors and Awards night–from produce they’d grown. Anne Leonard, the Culinary Arts teacher at Peninsula High used her grant to install a garden on campus and teach students how to grow their own food. But some learned much more: environmental science, good nutrition, working cooperatively, and about what goes into catering an event. At least one even found a career. Early in the year, Anne installed raised beds where her students planted radishes, zucchini, basil, swiss chard, and a variety of other greens. They learned that caring for a garden requires patience and responsibility. When it was time to harvest their vegetables, they learned how to prepare them. Finally, the Culinary Arts classes worked together to cater the annual Honors and Awards night dinner– for over 70 people. Their creations included spinach-feta phyllo rolls, pasta salad with swiss chard, goat cheese and tomatoes, and more. For dessert: grilled pineapple and homemade ice cream. “What an amazing experience this was for the students,” said Pen High College and Career Center Counselor Terri Lewallen.” This kind of experiential learning can have such an impact on kids. They actually get to experience what it would be like working as a professional chef or caterer.” One student said the class inspired him to pursue culinary school. Some of Anne’s students are moving on, but she’s expecting new classes and new crops this fall. Meanwhile, there’s more to harvest. Cucumbers. Green beans. Cherry tomatoes. And more. Says Anne, “The PEF Chuck Miller Grant and the garden have certainly brought a bounty to Peninsula High.” Budding engineers construct Lego robots in after school robotics, part of STEM. The hands-on, innovative curriculum makes students more aware of the field of engineering. Middle school is a critical point for our students. It’s here the seeds of innovation and creativity can truly be sown. With that in mind, this fall, all three Palos Verdes Peninsula Fostering creativity, inspiring innovative thinking. STEM teachers Paul Woodward, Ridgecrest, Nimick Campbell, Miraleste and Scott Garman from PVIS. Intermediate Schools will launch STEM, as in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. A new program designed by Project Lead the Way, STEM prepares students to be innovative, productive leaders in those fields, and to make meaningful, pioneering contributions to our world. A generous grant of $60,000 from American Honda Motor Company and the support of the PEF help make this program possible. STEM is divided into three independent units: design and modeling using computer aided design (CAD), automation and robotics, and a section on energy in the environment in which students will explore alternative energy systems. Moreover, the STEM curriculum has been coordinated with the existing high school engineering/technology programs (PVIT and SMERT), so as to ensure a seamless transition. In effect, it’s 6 unbroken years of high-level science and technology, a program unlike any other school system’s. Scott Garman, STEM instructor at PVIS, says, “excitement and interest in the STEM program has been very high.” Last year, the STEM program was piloted at Palos Verdes Intermediate School. Demand exceeded capacity. “Kids are interested because STEM is activity- and project-based,” Scott says. “The hands-on, innovative curriculum makes our students more aware of the field of engineering. It motivates them to pursue the science and math they need to work toward careers in this very important field.” With STEM, our students gain an edge and a head start on the path toward future career success in our hightech, high-skill global economy. Andrea Sala has returned to PEF as Executive Director. Beginning in 2001, Andrea served as PEF Executive Director for 9 years. In July of last year, she was offered the position of Associate Vice President of Development at California State University, Dominguez Hills. In the short time she was with them, she exceeded her fundraising goals. According to Andrea, CSUDH was a great opportunity, but her heart still belonged to PEF. Having lived in Palos Verdes most of her life, she really missed working in her own community and raising funds for Palos Verdes schools. “There’s nothing more satisfying than knowing you’re helping to save jobs and keep the schools strong in your own community,” says Andrea. “I’m excited to return and look forward to working collaboratively with the Board of Trustees to raise the funds that will keep our PVP schools strong for the next generation of students.” Congratulations, Andrea!
