Ice Cream and Sorbet
Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to Noon
Karen Harmon, a classically French-trained chef and owner of Karen’s
Culinary Creations, will be offering some fun and educational cooking
classes. What better time to enjoy ice cream than in the heat of summer.
On the first day of summer, learn how to make the base for vanilla bean
ice cream. From this base you can make just about any flavor and we
will make a few to sample: honey pistachio ice cream, cinnamon toast
ice cream, and on the lighter side, apple cider sorbet. Cost: $30/CIL
member: $35/resident; $40/non-member. (321553 A/AA)
EXCELLENCE — INNOVATION — POSITIVE EXPERIENCES
I n f o r m at i o n
Anna’s Angle
My oldest son studied Albert
Einstein this year in school
and has enjoyed sharing
the many facts that he has
learned. Fortunately, he
didn’t just retain the fact
that Dr. Einstein did not
wear socks, but also shared
this gem of a quote, “Life
is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance
you must keep moving.” The staff at Lathrem
works really hard to provide you with that
balance and even that gentle nudge to keep
you moving.
These pages are filled with new things to learn:
broom making, ice cream and sorbet creations,
cabbage rolls and the list goes on. There are
also places to explore: Edith Mae’s Tea Room,
Valley Vineyards, and food-filled adventures
on our Tasty Tours. Of course, we shouldn’t
leave out the many ways to keep you active:
exercise classes, golf leagues, shuffleboard and
the cycling group.
I encourage you to keep your life balance and
keep moving!

CIL Artist Display
Check out our Lathrem hallways—Wanda
Cisneros is displaying her paintings during May
and June. She says the following about her
work: “I taught myself to paint by watching
TV. In 1981 I was watching Bill Alexander paint
the wet-in-wet painting technique. I made my
own palette knife and used old paints I had
played around with over the years. In 1984 Bob
Ross had the show called the “Joy of Painting”
which I watched every Saturday. My husband
encouraged me to go to the Bob Ross “Joy of
Painting” classes, which I did for over 20 years.
I became a certified Bob Ross instructor in 1992
and started teaching two weeks after I got my
first certificate. Now I am a certified instructor
in the Bob Ross method of oil painting. I have
taught Landscapes for over 20 years. Florals and
wildlife came in early 2000. My dream was to
paint but I never thought I would teach classes
also. I was just too shy and bashful. Since those
days, I have also taught myself to paint with
acrylics and watercolors. I was featured on
the news with Bucher’s Beat. Jim Bucher from
Channel 2 came to my studio and we painted an
entire painting together. I also wrote a children’s
book which includes six stories.”

Healthy Arteries Screening
What is your vascular age?
Find out in less than 30 minutes!
Wednesday, May 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Kettering Health Network’s Center for Heart and
Vascular Services will be conducting Healthy Arteries
Screenings to help the individual learn if there is
plaque in the neck arteries for stroke prevention,
if there is narrowing in the arteries in the lower
extremities and to determine his/her vascular age.
Registration is required by calling 558-3988.
1. Carotid Intima Media Thickness (CIMT): Noninvasive Ultrasound is used to measure the
layers of the carotid artery wall in the neck.
A thickened CIMT is associated with increased
vascular age and risk for heart attack and stroke.
This measurement can determine when early
treatments are needed.
2. Carotid Artery Plaque Screening: Carotid Artery
Ultrasound detects plaque build-up in the
arteries in the neck most commonly associated
with stroke. A highly accurate method for
detecting the accumulation of plaque and blood
flow abnormalities in the carotid arteries.
3.Peripheral Artery Disease Screening: Ankle
Brachial Index detects the presence of Peripheral
Artery Disease (PAD) which occurs when there
is build-up of plaque in the arteries of the legs.
Persons with PAD are at increased risk for
coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke.
4.Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Scan: Ultrasound
imaging visualizes the abdominal aorta, and
is a highly accurate method for detecting and
measuring the presence and size of an aneurysm.
Package 1: 4 exams (Carotid/CIMT/ABI/AAA) $139
Package 2: 3 exams (Carotid/CIMT, Aorta Scan OR ABI) $129
Package 3: 2 exams (Carotid/CIMT OR Carotid/AAA) $90
Package 4: Carotid OR Aorta only $60
