Coaching Staff
After a breakthrough campaign in 2007-08,
Stephen Thompson enters his fourth season as head
coach and seventh season overall with the Cal State L.A.
men’s basketball program.
The Golden Eagles posted a 17-11 overall record
and finished in a tie for third in the California Collegiate
Athletic Association in 2007-08. Cal State L.A. qualified for
the CCAA Championship Tournament as a No. 3 seed and
hosted a first-round game. The Golden Eagles finished the
season ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II West Region
and made their first appearance in a regional poll since
2000. The 17 wins were the most for the Golden Eagles
since the 1999-2000 season and the third-place finish in
the conference was the best since a second-place finish in
Stephen Thompson 2000.
Thompson was able to lead the Golden Eagles to
their best season in eight years despite losing two of the
team’s top three scorers – one after just eight games and the other after 14 contests. Vincent
Camper earned All-CCAA and All-West Region honors and led a trio of Golden Eagles who
notched a conference-high five CCAA Player of the Week awards last season.
Thompson became the head coach of the program in March of 2005 following the
retirement of former head coach Dave Yanai. In his first three years as the Cal State L.A. head
coach, Thompson has led the team to an overall record of 37-45. Under Thompson’s leadership, the Golden Eagles have seen their
offensive productivity jump from 59.4 points per game in 2005 to 76.3 points per game last season. The Golden Eagles also saw a big
improvement in their defensive performance and allowed five fewer points per game last year than they had the previous season.
The Golden Eagles were 10-17 in 2006-07 in a season that included wins over CCAA champion Humboldt State (94-85) and
Division-1 bound Cal State Bakersfield (70-63). Cal State L.A. also had its first All-American since 2003 when leading scorer Jontae
Vinson earned honorable mention recognition. Vinson also became the first Golden Eagle to earn first-team All-Region honors since
2003 and the Golden Eagles placed two players on the All-CCAA teams for the first time since 2002.
In Thompson’s first season as head coach, the Golden Eagles took a big jump, improving nine games overall and becoming
one of the most improved programs in the NCAA Division II. The Golden Eagles swept local rival Cal State Dominguez Hills and posted
a big win over Cal State Bakersfield to highlight a 10-17 season.
Thompson joined Cal State L.A. in 2002 and in his first season on the bench, the Golden Eagles ranked 46th in the nation in
scoring defense, allowing only 67.3 points per game. In his second season, the Golden Eagles allowed just 65.4 points per game and
moved up to 31st in the country in scoring defense.
A Los Angeles native and Crenshaw High School graduate, Thompson was a three-year starter at Syracuse from 1986-90 and
was a key part of the team that reached the 1987 NCAA Championship Game against Indiana and also the 1989 squad that advanced
to a regional championship game before falling to Illinois.
Thompson earned honorable mention All-America honors by the Associated Press and The Sporting News in 1989 and 1990
and was the Big East Conference’s Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1990. During his four years playing for legendary
Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, the Orange won two Big East titles in 1987 and 1990, finished second in the conference in 1988 and
made four NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the Sweet 16. Syracuse was a combined 113-31 overall and 45-19
in conference play during Thompson’s playing career.
Thompson currently owns the second-best career shooting mark in NCAA Tournament history. In 15 NCAA Tournament games,
Thompson hit 78-of-114 field-goal attempts (.684). Former UCLA great Bill Walton leads that category with a .686 percentage in 12
games.
He also holds the Orange career mark for games played (144), ranks second in career field goals (801), fifth in career fieldgoal percentage (.560), sixth in career scoring (1,956) and tied for 12th in career steals (184). At the end of his collegiate playing career,
Thompson ranked third in Syracuse history in scoring and seventh in steals.
Professionally, Thompson had stints with the Orlando Magic, Sacramento Kings and the Denver Nuggets and also played in
Europe, Japan, the CBA, the ABA and the Southern California Pro League.
Before joining the Cal State L.A. coaching staff, Thompson served as Athletic Director for the Coast Christian School in
Redondo Beach, while continuing both his roles as Co-Founder and Director of Give & Go Basketball Academy and as coach for the
Southern California All-Stars.
He also had a role in the 2002 basketball movie, “Like Mike.”
Thompson received his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Syracuse in 1990.
He and his wife, Amy, have two children: Stephen Jr. and Ethan.

Coaching Staff
A former player at Cal State L.A., Gary Vasquez begins his fifth year as an assistant coach
for the men’s basketball program. His responsibilities include scheduling, film exchange, monitoring
the weight-lifting program, scouting and he also serves as one of the recruiting coordinators. He
has also assisted with the program’s summer camps for the past four years.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2007-08. The Golden Eagles

As a player, Vasquez played in all 27 games during his senior season in 2003-04. He
started 22 games and was seventh in the conference in steals (39) and ninth in assists (79). He
was also presented with the team’s “Most Inspirational Player” award.
He started his coaching career as a volunteer student assistant coach for then-head
coach Dave Yanai in the 2004-05 season. When Coach Stephen Thompson took over for the
2005-06 season, Vasquez was promoted to the No. 1 assistant coach position.
The Whittier native came to Cal State L.A. to complete a college basketball career that
started at East L.A. College, where he played for two seasons from 2000-02. He then played for one year at San Jose Christian in
2002-03 and led the program to its best-ever record at 19-12 while setting a school single-season record for assists (174).
He played three years of varsity basketball at St. John Bosco and earned All-Serra League honors as a senior. He was a twoyear team captain.
Vasquez received his Master’s degree in education from AIU after receiving his bachelor’s degree in industrial technology from
Cal State L.A. in 2005.
He and his wife, Nicole, were married in August of 2006.

After joining Cal State L.A.’s men’s basketball program last year, Neal Hyams
returns for a second season with the Golden Eagles’ coaching staff.
Hyams comes to Cal State L.A. from Mira Costa High School, where he
was the girls basketball varsity coach from 2003-08. He guided his team to a
CIF Southern Section championship in 2008 and his team also was a state
runner-up in Division 2. He also led the 2007 team to the CIF Southern Section
championship game.
His record at Mira Costa was 96-40.
Before going to Mira Costa, Hyams was a successful middle school boys coach
for five years and he was also a club coach for fifth-thru-eighth grade boys for six
years.
He and his wife, Stephanie, have three children, Marisa, J.T. and Livia
A basketball player and coach from Japan, Yosuke Mizoguchi joins the Cal
State L.A. men’s basketball program as the team manager. Mizoguchi helps with
practices and with game-time management duties.
He has his college degree in physical education and has a credential to teach
P.E. in Japan. He graduated from the University of Tokay in 2006. Mizoguchi
played basketball from 2002-05 where he was on the “B” team. He was an
assistant coach on the “A” team in 2005 and the “B” team in 2006. He was also
part of the 2006 All-University tournament champion team.
He is currently taking classes at the International Language Systems in
Alhambra.

2007-08: Was a key player for the Golden Eagles in his first
year with the program. Appeared in 26 games and started
10 times. Averaged 8.7 points, 2.0 assists and 3.0
rebounds per game. Scored a career-high 21
points in a win over San Francisco State
(2-22-08). Also had 20 points in a win
at Chico State (2-28-08) and 16 points
at San Francisco State (1-19-08).

Long Beach City College: Earned first-team AllSouth Coast Conference honors in 2006. Also earned

Team won the conference championship two years in a row.
Long Beach Wilson HS: Earned All-CIF and All-Moore League honors. Played for three
seasons on the varsity team. Averaged 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists as a
senior.
Personal: Son of Maurice and Glenda Hart. Majoring in fire protection administration and
technology. Enjoys playing video games, going on trips, shopping, getting tattoos and hanging out
with the team. Lists making an opposing CCAA guard fall to the floor from a crossover dribble as
his most exciting experience in sports.

Had 19 points and seven rebounds at Chico State (2-28-08) and had 27 points and
a season-high 20 rebounds at Cal State Stanislaus (2-29-08). Led the team with
eight double-doubles and was third in the conference in that category. Was named the
team’s Most Improved Player.
Los Angeles Harbor College: Earned first-team All-Conference honors and
averaged 13.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Averaged 17.0 points and 7.8
rebounds per game in conference play.
Cary HS: Competed in basketball.
Personal: Son of Anthony Mark and Margo Williams. Majoring in social work.
Enjoys watching television and eating. Lists getting 27 points and 20 rebounds
when his family came out from North Carolina to watch as his most exciting
experience in sports..

2006-07: Appeared in 26 games and started 20 times for the
Golden Eagles in his first season with the program. Averaged
7.5 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. Was
fourth on the team in scoring and third in assists. Poured
in a season-high 22 points against Chico State (2-10-07).
Also had 17 points against Cal Poly Pomona (3-207). Reached double figures in scoring seven times.
Had a season-high six rebounds at UC San Diego
(2-17-07) and a season-high six assists at Cal Poly
Pomona (1-27-07).
Antelope Valley Junior College: Averaged six points
and three rebounds per game in 2005-06.
Marshall Fundamental HS: Averaged 9.6 assists per game as a senior. Earned All-CIF

Chico State (2-10-07) and 11 points and two rebounds against Cal State
Stanislaus (2-9-07).
Don Bosco Tech HS: Made the Dean’s List and President’s List for
academic honors. Earned first-team All-League honors as a junior and senior.
Team won the league championship during his junior season.
Personal: Son of Luis and Nola Polo. Majoring in art. Enjoys hoopin’ and playing
video games. Lists winning a certain game his junior year in high school and flying
out to play Syracuse in an exhibition game as a freshman with Cal State L.A. as
his most exciting experiences in sports.

2007-08: Was a top 3-point shooting threat for the Golden Eagles
as a junior. Led the team and was fifth in the California
Collegiate Athletic Association in 3-pointers made.
Sank 59 from behind the arc. Finished third on the
team in scoring with 10.6 points per game.
Appeared in 26 games and started 11 times.
Poured in a season-high 24 points and hit
six of eight from behind the 3-point arc in a
win over Biola (12-15-07). Also had 22 points
in a season-opening win over Saint Martin’s
(11-23-07) and 21 points against Cal State San
Bernardino (2-9-08). Reached double figures in
scoring in 15 of the 26 games he played in and had
18 or more points in five contests.
Long Beach City College: Was rated as one of the top 25 junior
college players in California by JC Hoops.com. Earned first-team honorable mention All-South
Coast Conference honors for two consecutive years. Averaged 16.0 points, three rebounds
and three assists per game.
Washington Prep HS: Was a McDonald’s All-America nominee and earned All-League
honors in 2003. Was rated as one of the top shooting guards.
Personal: Son of Andre Hazel and Robbie Randolph. Majoring in fire protection
administration and technology. Enjoys movies, reading, eating out and getting tattoos. Lists
scoring 39 points against Mt. San Antonio College in the championship game of the Irvine
Tournament as his most exciting experience in sports.

College of the Canyons: Earned first-team All-Western State Conference honors and was
the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2006-07. Averaged 14.8 points and 4.5 rebounds. Shot
60 percent from the floor. Scored 37 points in a game against Orange Coast College.
Hamilton HS: Competed in basketball and earned All-League honors.
Personal: Son of Rosalind Cobb. Majoring in criminal justice. Enjoys reading and
watching movies. Lists making it to the Elite Eight while at College of the Canyons
as his most exciting experience in sports.

Long Beach State: Played for three seasons for the 49ers and appeared in 51 games.
Appeared in nine games and started four times last season. Averaged 7.4 points. 2.1
assists and 1.9 rebounds per game. Had a career-high 15 points in an early-season
game at Washington. Appeared in 26 games in 2006-07 and averaged 1.9 points and
1.3 rebounds per game. Shot 84 percent from the free-throw line. Had a season-high
six points against Air Force. Appeared in 16 games as a true freshman in 200506. Averaged 1.3 points and 0.7 assists per game. Had a season-high 10 points
against San Francisco State.
Pasadena HS: Lettered for four years. Averaged 16 points, seven assists and
four rebounds per game as a senior and led a team that won the Pacific League
championship. Earned All-League honors twice and was the team’s Most Valuable
Player. Team reached the CIF championship game and had a state ranking of No. 10.
Personal: Son of Tina Johnson. Majoring in business management. Enjoys shopping, playing
video games, hanging out and having fun. Lists going to the NCAA Tournament as a sophomore at Long Beach State as his
most exciting experience in sports.

Norco HS: Received an Academic Award for having a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Earned the Coach’s Award and also earned second-team All-League honors. Was the
team’s Offensive Player of the Year and the co-Defensive Player of the Year. Competed
in basketball, football and track and field.
Personal: Son of Earnest Cheatham and Valerie Williams. Majoring in psychology.
Enjoys playing basketball and going to movies. Lists making it to the CIF
Championship and playing in the Honda Center as his most exciting experience
in sports.

Covina HS: Was the team’s Most Valuable Player. Had 16 points, six rebounds and two
blocks in a game against Northview High School.
Personal: Son of Richard and Donna Romero. Majoring in architectural technology
and graphic design. Enjoys basketball and snowboarding. Lists training hard during
the off-season and the regular season as his most exciting experience in sports.
Earned two AA degrees in Arts and Humanities and Math and Science at Mt. San
Antonio College

Long Beach City College: Earned first-team All-Conference honors as a sophomore after

and volleyball teams.
The arena seats 5,000
fans, with many of the
seats right on top of
the action. In fact, the
first row of seats is just
inches away from the
edges of the basketball
playing floor.
The retro-style of the
Eagles Nest includes
the ability for the arena to quickly become one of the loudest arenas in the country.
The Eagles Nest hosted some of the finest athletes in the world as the judo competition was
held at CSULA during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The Eagles Nest was featured
prominently in the 2005 movie Coach Carter, starring Samuel L. Jackson.

Cal State L.A. boasts a rich athletic history with seven national team championships, 10
national team runner-up finishes and 70 conference championships. This tradition of excellence
continued in 2007-08:
• Approximately 35% of our student-athletes earned year-long GPAs of 3.0 or higher.
• Eight of Cal State L.A.’s 11 intercollegiate teams qualified for CCAA or NCAA postseason competition.
• Cal State L.A. finished 40th in the 2008 Directors’ Cup out of 281 NCAA Division II programs.
• Cal State L.A. finished a program-best third place in the CCAA Commissioner’s Cup.
• Golden Eagle student-athletes earned 11 All-America awards, 13 All-Region awards and 57 All-CCAA awards.
• Omonike Kotey won a national championship in the women’s indoor triple jump.
• Desi Burt was named the West Region Field Athlete of the Year in men’s outdoor track and field, while Kotey was the
West Region Field Athlete of the Year in women’s indoor track and field.
• Three Cal State L.A. student-athletes were named CCAA Athlete of the Year in their sports: Karla Alburez in women’s
cross country, Burt in men’s track and field and Ioana Comsa in women’s tennis.
• The Golden Eagles claimed 10 individual CCAA titles: Karla Alburez in women’s cross country, Desi Burt (2), in men’s

Anton Gunnarsson (men’s soccer) and Ioana Comsa (women’s tennis) were named CCAA Freshmen of the Year in
their sports.
Shianne Smith (women’s track and field), Damein White (men’s track and field) and Cynthia Rios (women’s cross
country) were named CCAA Newcomers of the Year in their sports.
Christopher Asher was named the CCAA Coach of the Year in women’s cross country and the West Region Coach of
the Year in men’s track and field.
Cal State L.A.’s women’s cross country team won the CCAA championship and finished fifth in the nation
Cal State L.A.’s men’s track and field team finished seventh in the nation.
Cal State L.A.’s women’s indoor track and field team finished 11th in the nation.
Cal State L.A.’s women’s soccer team enjoyed its best season ever, qualified for the NCAA playoffs for the first time
and advanced to the Far-West Region title game.
Cal State L.A.’s women’s volleyball team advanced to the Pacific Region semi-finals for the third straight year.
Cal State L.A.’s men’s basketball team earned the No. 3 seed in the CCAA Championship Tournament.
