The enthusiasm for space exploration had motivating roots in science fiction literature (like Cyrano de Bergerac,
Jules Vernes, Kurd Laßwitz,…) but beyond first scientific publications and experiments at the begin of the 20 th
century paved the path to send on 4.10.1957 the first man-made satellite, Sputnik 1, into orbit around Earth.

The "IFAC Technical Committee on Automatic Control in Aerospace" was founded in 1963, very soon after
these exciting breakthroughs. At the time of cold war and of space race, the vision for international cooperation
in order to advance the state-of-the-art in this new emerging field of Aerospace Control was not obvious. The

The IFAC Space/Aerospace TC grew out of the Application TC. J.A. Aseltine, from 1963 -1966 Chairman of
the Theory Committee became the first Chairman of the “Technical Committee on Automatic Control
in Space”. The first Symposium on Automatic Control in Space was organized in June 1965 by the
Norwegian Host Society in Stavanger, Norway, Title: “First IFAC Symposium on Automatic Control in
the Peaceful Uses of Space”. To top off the high quality technical sessions there were social events and a
great dinner party. In the spirit of the time, the representative of the Norwegian host held a dinner
speech on "Aerospace and Elephants as seen from the different IFAC nationalities".
Since the beginning, a great number of internationally outstanding scientists and engineers working in
various disciplines of Space/Aerospace Control devoted their time and services to the IFAC Space/Aerospace
Technical Committee.

Preface of the first IFAC Symposium on Automation Control in the Peaceful Uses of
Space, held June 21-24, 1965, in Stavanger, Norway.
The agenda of Symposia and topics of workshop reflect over 40 years of development in
Space/Aerospace Vehicle dynamics and controls and the underlying progress in components like sensors,
actuators and computers. We are able now to control complex, powerful, large flexible and widely autonomous
systems to extremely high accuracy. W e know much more about the mathematical models of our systems
and components and are using computational tools to an extend that could become a danger in itself, if we
forget to questions over and over again their validity for our present design work. A number of spectacular
failures have given testimony, that the old rule is still true: “Don’t model what you cannot test and don’t
rely on what you cannot verify”.

IFAC Conferences
IFAC is based on tri-annual cycles: Every 3 years the World Congress, the most important event, where all
control and automation disciplines contribute, is organized. Here the TC on aerospace organizes dedicated
sessions on aerospace missions, navigation, guidance and control. In the year after the World Congress
typically the TC on Aerospace organizes a workshop on an emerging topic of actual interest to invite the related
international specialists in this field. In the subsequent year, the most important event for this TC is the
Symposium on Automatic Control in Aerospace, where the broad range of Aerospace Control topics is
addressed.
Symposia
At the very beginning, the TC on Automatic Control in Aerospace decided to organize a series of
symposia, title "IFAC Symposia on Automatic Control in Space/Aerospace" which, over the years have
become a tri-annual event. Here by the symposia the main space/aerospace events a r e organized by the
TC and are alternating with IFAC World Congresses and workshops. Attendance at the symposia over the
years has stabilized at around 160 to 180 attendees. Typically the duration is 5 days and in the middle is
place a half-day professional excursion to local aerospace attractions or industry. The evenings offer social
events for offering opportunities to exchange information and to find new professional friends among the
international participants.
Listed below are the Symposia and the key personal in their organization. Like the IFAC World
Congress, the IFAC Aerospace Control Symposium has been hosted by different countries around the
World too.

Workshops
The sequence of workshops was started in the later seventies b y John Hursh (Draper Labs, Boston) and
were so successful that in the TC meeting during the last workshop, a decision was taken to organize
workshops on special emerging subjects regularly, preferably every three years to bridge the gap between
IFAC World Congresses and IFAC Aerospace Control Symposia and give TC members an opportunity to
meet at least once a year.
Listed below are workshop subjects over the years and the names of the key promoters and organizers.

The workshops were a rich source for invited papers to bring one year later attendees of the symposia up to
date on emerging developments. Attendance at the workshop is usually between 50 and 80 people.

Role in the IFAC Technical Network
The Technical Committee on Automatic Control in Aerospace is not working as a monolithic block within
IFAC but part of the IFAC technical network by co-operating with other technical committees e.g. through
co-sponsoring meetings and contributing invited papers. Examples are invited sessions on spacecraft
systems’ at the Symposia of the TC on Intelligent Autonomous Systems, on Mechatronic Systems, on
Computers and Telematics, as well as on Human-Machine Interfaces.
The TC on Aerospace Control is supporting IFAC Journals AUTOMATICA and Control Engineering
Practice and affiliated Journal SPACE TECHNOLOGY by submitting and recommending manuscripts for
publication. Representatives of the TC have been supporting the editorial boards of AUTOMATICA (J.
Sasiadek), Control Engineering Practice (K. Schilling and H. Siguerdidjane) and SPACE TECHNOLOGY
(from topic editor to editor-in-Chief: K. Schilling, editorial advisors: E. Gottzein, J. Mitchell, D. DeBra) f o r
many years.
In recognition of her scientific work and her contributions
to IFAC Eveline Gottzein was 2008 appointed as IFAC
Fellow by President Wook-Hyun Kwon at the 17th World
Congress in Seoul (South Korea).

Aerospace TC Guidelines
Guidelines to govern future work and organization of the Aerospace TC were discussed and unanimously
approved by the TC members in 2002. See “Leadership Structure for the IFAC Technical Committee on
Aerospace” in the attachment at the end of this report.
Acknowledgement
Finally, we want to thank all the TC and steering committee members who helped us to collect the material
for this summary. It is impressive how many outstanding scientists contributed their leisure time to this
voluntary work in promoting the international exchange of information and joint activities in aerospace control.
The joint committee work in this motivating and challenging field paid back with many lifelong friends and
scientific cooperation, which significantly advanced methods and technologies.
We sincerely hope that coming Aerospace TC Chairmen will keep the “IFAC Automatic Control in Aerospace
Technical Committee” lively, on course to provide leadership to aerospace engineers working in controls,
and lead the TC to even greater success and future heights.
We are looking forward that future Chairmen update this summary for their term of office to have it complete
for the “100 year anniversary of this IFAC TC on Aerospace” in 2063 and for future generations of control
engineers.

The Leadership Structure for the
IFAC TC on Aerospace
Issue 15.02.2002
Following the standard organizational structures of companies, the IFAC TC on Aerospace leadership is
composed of the
Executive committee, which is responsible for the overall TC policy and consists of the chair and
two vice-chairs
Steering committee, consisting of the former TC chairs, supporting with their professional expertise
and IFAC experience the executive committee
The future executive committee is to be confirmed by the TC based on the proposal of the acting chair,
which is to be agreed with the steering committee. The period of duty is between two consecutive IFAC
World congresses for 3 years. The task distribution is as follows:
Chair of TC:
defines the overall policy, reports on meetings, sends the annual report to the
CC-chair, should attend the workshops and symposia of the TC, organize the World
Congress sessions, nominates TC members in consulting with Vice Chairs and
Steering Committee, organizes TC meetings at least once a year (including writing
and distribution of minutes)

1 vice-chair: organizer of the symposium in the related 3-years period
nd
2 vice-chair: incoming chair, who will chair the TC in the succeeding period; chairs TC meetings
in the absence of the chair.
The executive committee is responsible to the Aerospace TC and IFAC for the proper conductance/
initiation of all related and required TC activities. The usual means of communications with and between
TC members is by electronic mail. The executive committee shall inform the TC members on TC activities
regularly. A TC meeting should be conducted at least once a year.
The executive committee members perform together:





Periodical appointment of TC members,
Initiation of conferences,
Special appointments for TC activities (by example publications, public relations),
Suggestions of honorary members,
Participation in the World Congress.
This way a good information flow between these three persons on the key TC duties, as well as continuity in
leadership should be achieved. Usually the 3 members should come from different continents in order to
reflect the internationality of IFAC.
The executive committee in coordination with the steering committee decides all matters not addressed
explicitly above.
The steering committee supports the executive committee with their background knowledge on past
activities and TC decisions made, as well as by recommendations on future activities and on personal for
future leadership. They should be informed on the running business by being placed on the cc-e-mail list
of the executive committee. Its members generate the report on “new directions” to the IFAC TC on Aerospace
and provide recommendations on topics for workshops and for the symposium scope. They should be
consulted for suggestions on keen old speakers, plenary speakers, IPC members, and invited session
organizers for the conferences organized by the TC. The steering committee has responsibility for the quality
of conferences organized by the TC.
