The Wasatch Marine Aquarium Society is pleased to present the 9th Annual Reef Tour!
Please join us in visiting our member’s houses, where you will see amazing and beautiful
REEF AQUARIUMS! This event is a parade of homes style tour, where you can go at
your leisure and visit many houses along the Wasatch Front. We have over 30 places to
visit with setups from beginner to expert. You will have a unique opportunity to see what
types of exotic animals people are keeping, and how they set up their aquariums.

Welcome to the REEF TOUR 2004!!!
This packet is your guide to seeing some of the most beautiful and exotic creatures that
inhabit our world's marine ecosystems. Prepare yourself for a fun day of driving around the
valley visiting homes with colorful corals, marine fishes, shrimp, plants, crustaceans, and
friendly people.
All you have to do is drive around to the houses listed in this packet. These houses have
been listed in a geographical order to help you find the locations near you. Feel free to ask the
aquarium owners any questions you may have, they probably love talking about their hobby.
Who are we? You may or not be familiar with the Wasatch Marine Aquarium Society. We
are an organization that has been here in the Salt Lake area for about 10 years. In that time we
have grown to be one of the largest aquarium clubs in the nation. We have free monthly
meetings with guest speakers, aquarium advice, fundraisers, socials, coral propagation, and
10% off purchases at many local fish stores. Most importantly we have a friendly place to meet
people and talk about saltwater aquariums.
We would love to see you visit our meeting, which are always open to the public. If you
have any questions call us at 809-ADAM. We also have a wonderful website with much
information and an online discussion forum. In fact our website www.utahreefs.com was
recently presented with an award by the Marine Aquarium Societies of North America as the
number one hobbyist website in the nation!!!!

DESCRIPTION:
System includes a total bulk volume of 140 gal... this incorporates a 55 gal show
tank filled with coralline lavished LR and although, a great variety/mix of very
colorful and healthy corals, is dominated primarily by sps corals that have been
collected from many places (including the last WMAS frag swap). The show
/display tank is illuminated by over 500 watts of high intensity lighting (beginning
with 110 watts of actinics @ 8am and gaining another 110watts @ 9am. Then the
Halides come on @ 11am, running for 8 hours, then shutting off in the same
manner... 8 blue led's kept controlled by a dimmer switch allow a variation of
nocturnal lunar lighting) that includes both halides and pc's and is kept cool with a
pair of 3" fans and a 6" clip-on desk fan. Fish include: a yellow tang, mature bicolor blenny, six-line wrasse, pj cardinal, blue damsel, and a beautiful mated pair
of GBM Clowns hosting in a large Rose BTA. A mated pair of cleaner shrimp are
amusing and dancing continuously, a trio of red emeralds keeps the display algae
free, while an assortment of brittle stars, sea cukes(and sea apple), and many
hermits n snails accompany the emeralds with the janitorial duties. From the
display, the water flows through the overflow to a 30 gl sump that houses another
arrangement of LR and my DIY 750 gph skimmer (this system is purposely un-lit
for creature variance and is quite suitable for the housing of different sponges).
This is also the area in which the probe for monitoring the ph controller is placed.
From this vessel, the water flows through 2 bulkheads and a j tube into 2
chambers of a 3 chamber, 55 gl refugium. The first chamber is a 6-8"DSB
and where chaeto is grown and harvested quite regularly, this is also the area of
placement for the affluent of the azoo twin chamber ca reactor. Chamber 1 flows
into chamber 2 along with a bulkhead from the 30 gal sump. This area is where a
plenum is utilized and some algaes/caulerpas grow very well. The first 2 chambers
are kept lighted by RDL with a 55 watt pc. Camber 3 is the 900gph return pump
area and the area in which the kalkwasser/ro make-up water is delivered from a 5
gl DIY kalkwasser reactor. Soon, the system will be kept completely topped of with
a 6 stage ro/di unit(installing asap). This last chamber also houses the 350 watt
titanium sub heater. The canopy and "stand" are made of pine with an golden oak
stain(the stand is a one-of-a-kind... guaranteed)The majority of this system was
designed and built by me. Some pics can be seen in the July 2004 TOTM.
DIRECTIONS:
North on I15, 1st exit(Brigham/Logan) east, left @ 1st stop light(500 west).
Continue until reaching stop sigh then turn left(700 south). Drive 2 blocks and as
passing 700 south, look to the left... you will see a small open lot(all dirt) behind
the corner house, the next house(blue with large window facing east) is the house
(765 west). There is a large drive with plenty of parking.

Description:
The corals are quite literally growing out of the water inside this 120 gallon
aquarium. It is filled with a large assortment of hard and soft corals. Over 60
different coral species adorn the rock work of this beautifully aqua-scaped minireef. The two separate reef structures provide plenty of swimming room for the
large variety of fish housed here. The tank is lit with 630 watts of high intensity
light consisting of a combination of metal halide and very high output (VHO) bulbs.
A unique water top off system replaces evaporated water, while a calcium reactor
provides the necessary chemicals for coral growth. The custom made oak tank
stand and matching canopy complete the stunning display. This mature aquarium
is a must see for both the advanced and novice aquarist alike.

Traveling north bound on I-15 from Ogden take the second Brigham City exit

Take a detour on the way back home along Hwy 89 through Utah’s famous “Fruit
Way”. You can stop at one of many fruit stands to purchase some delicious locally
grown produce. You could also make a pit stop at Brigham City’s own “Peach City”
for a huge shake made with home made ice cream.

Description:
One visit to this home is like three normal stops anywhere else along the reef tour!
There are three beautifully stocked aquariums on display. The largest, a 300
gallon acrylic tank is home to many species of coral and fish. A recently added
carpet anemone adorns one side of this large aquarium. The aquascaping of this
aquarium is as impressive as its size. Also located in this room is a 75 gallon glass
aquarium that is home to a mated pair of tomato clownfish. The pair recently
spawned and a new clutch of eggs is easily visible. As this is a regular occurrence,
it is likely that there will be fry available to view as well. There is also a 30 gallon
aquarium on display. This aquarium houses many fish and inverts including a
small lobster. Although quite shy, it is a beautiful and unusual invertebrate in the
home aquarium. The tank also houses several anemones including a stunning rose
bubble tip. This stop has something for everyone. From a large aquarium utilizing
the latest lighting and filtration techniques to a smaller, more simplistic approach,
this home is proof that success can be had at many levels.
Directions:
Traveling north bound on I-15 from Ogden, take the second Brigham City exit

onto Main Street. Travel north on Main Street ((Main Street becomes Hwy 38) for
approx ½ mile to 1654 North, Turn right onto the lane.

Description:
This is a 70 gallon aquarium with an assortment of hard and soft corals. The tank
is lit with 330 watts of light consisting of a combination of power compact and very
high output (VHO) bulbs. The custom made oak tank stand and matching canopy
complete the display. The filtration system on this tank utilizes a unique turf
scrubber filter and refugium.

Description:
Jared has a 90g tank that is about 6 months old. It’s still quite young, but is doing
pretty well. Nearly everything about the tank is DIY. This has kept the cost down
considerably while still marinating a beautiful tank.
Directions:
From I-15 take exit 344a east bound; take a right onto wall heading south. Stay
on wall as it turns east and changes into 40th. After the light for the McKay Dee
hospital, but before the Smiths is a hard to see right hand turn. It looks like you
are turning into the parking for the “land mark” building. Head down that road to
the end. You will enter Secret Cove condos. I’m in F-1.

Description:
Start by viewing the soft coral 55g aquarium. Well, mostly soft corals w/ tons of
beautiful polyps! Also, amated pair of high fin cardinals, green chromis, black and
white clown. All under VHO lighting. Then see the 60g cube tank that was just
started (ALL FRAGS!). SPS only. Everything has started out very well and
everything is just starting to encrust and grow.. also has a 10g frag tank tied into
the same system. Halide and T5 HO lighting

From I-15 - Merge onto 31ST ST/UT-79 E via exit number 344A. Turn LEFT onto
WASHINGTON BLVD and go to 30Th Street. Turn right and go east to Harrison
Blvd. On Harrison turn LEFT. At 26TH ST, turn RIGHT. Make a LEFT onto Tyler Ave
and then a RIGHT onto Lake Street. Cory’s place has a rock wall made of large
rocks. It’s a red brick house with a green gate.

Description:
This 8 month old setup includes a 225 gallon reef tank with 55 gallon refugium. It
has 17 types of hard corals, and 22 types of soft corals.
The total coral population is over 130 specimens. 125 of these are fragments from
WMAS members or meetings. Fish include: Blue-Green Chromis, Fox-faced Rabbit
Fish, a pair of Percula Clownfish, Firefish, Lawnmower Blenny, Scooter Blenny,
Pink Spotted Watchman Goby, Clown Goby, Mandarin Goby, and a Sixline Wrasse.
Other inhabitants: Tulip anemones, Emerald Crabs, Cleaner Shrimp (one has eggs
right now), Peppermint Shrimp, Pistol Shrimp, Acro Crabs, Hermit crabs, Turbo
Snails, and many of unknown name/origin. This tank is a "must-see," since it will
change significantly before the 10th annual tour.
Hardware includes 4 - 250w 10,000k D.E. metal halides, 4 - 24w blue power
compacts, a calcium reactor, an auto-top off Reverse Osmosis unit, and EuroReef
skimmer. The custom made knotted pine canopy hides all hardware, and has
been modified to allow the frame to be broken down into 3 parts to facilitate
moving the tank around the world.
Directions:
From I-15 traveling north from SLC, take exit #347 to 12th Street. Take a left
turn (east) at the first light. You will be on 12th street. Go through 6 stoplights,
the last of which is Harrison Blvd. Approx 1/2 block on the left, you will see a blue
sign for the Canyon Road Church of God, and a left hand turn on to Mountain
Road. Turn left and go approx 3/4 of a mile uphill to 1043 Mountain Road. The
house is beige colored brick with brown siding on your left hand side.

Description:
This starter tank is a 120 Gallon Acrylic tank lit by 4 VHO tubes on an IceCap
Ballast. It has soft corals like Mushroom, Polyp, and Leather finger. There are a
couple of fish to give the tank that extra action only fish can bring. (Foxface Rabbit
Fish, 2 Clown fish and a Pseudo Red Spotted Chromie)

This monstrous 270 gallon tank takes up 7 feet. It’s only 9 months old, but has
lots of fish and corals. Beautiful large Tangs in this spacious tank give it an air of
open sky comfort. It's a truly beautiful reef.
Directions:
From I-15 Layton exit at Antelope Road and go east a ways. Upon dropping down
into the second big dip/valley in the road, turn right at Oak Forest. Go to the end
and turn right onto Oak Lane. Look for the long driveway up to the house at 2105
E.

Description:
Aaron has a 75 gallon reef tank containing mixed hard and soft corals under Metal
halide lighting. Three anemones host a pair of spawning Maroon Clownfish
(Premnas biaculeatus). The Sump and filtration equipment (calcium reactor,
skimmer, etc.) is plumbed through wall.

Description:
The tank is 4' long, 2' high, 18" deep, and built into the entrance wall of the
home. You see one side as you enter the house and the other side when you
enter the office thus effectively making it two tanks. This tank has many
anemones, soft corals and the live rock is constantly changing thanks to the very
large cat fish that makes his home under the rocks and makes them always fall
this way and that way. It has about 12 fish comprising of a very large sail fin
tang, a large yellow tang, four green chromas, a very large cat fish, three different
clown fish and misc. other fish. It has two twenty gallon tanks in the bottom of
the stand. The stand was custom built by Arthur in his work shop and features
scroll saw figures of sea horses on the front and at the intakes of the fans.
Directions:
Take the 331 exit from I-15 and go East to the Chevron/McDonalds station. Turn
left there, and go through a stop sign. Continue on past the Ben Franklin Store on
your right. Go past St. Marks Gardens (it is a old folks retirement center). The
next street past St. Marks Gardens is 150 West, turn right and go to the end of
the street where it bends to the east. You will see a vinyl flag pole with two flags
flying. That is 531 North.

From I-15 take the Centerville exit (#322) and head east to 400 East. Turn left

Description:
Mark has a 75 gal in the window that gets a lot of light from the Sun. It is
attached to a 20 gal RDP Refugia and a 40 gal shallow, coral fragging grow-out
tank. Most of the Live Rock and Corals are home grown. The clam graveyard in
this tank is not nearly as impressive as the 5 live clams. The 9 inch clam is very
striking and Mangrove trees grow in the Refugium. Main tank Lighting is VHO
Fluorescent with dual Metal Halide soon to be added to the existing unique
hanging light hood.

From I-15, take the 400 North exit in Bountiful. Turn East/right to 200 W. Turn
north/left to Pages Lane then three more houses past the intersection. Tank is in
the front window of the house on the left/west side of the street.

tank is in the front window of the house on the right/west side of the street, three
houses before you get to Pages Lane.

Description:
This 180 gallon all glass aquarium is a must see for anyone close to North Salt
Lake. Ross and Carolyn have spent many hours composing this aquatic
masterpiece, a truly magnificent feast for aquarium lovers everywhere. It is lit
with four 6' VHO fluorescent lighting for a variety of large soft coral, including
a HUGE Mushroom Leather Coral. This tank is naturally filtered, with 2 power
heads in the corners to provide a slight, gentle wave in the water, and a sump
below.
Directions:
From the north: take the "Center Street" North Salt Lake exit. Turn left and follow
the road through a stop sign and 2 lights as it changes names on the way up the
hill to 729 E.
From the south: Exit I-15 to Highway 89. At the light at Center Street, turn right
and follow as above.

Description:
Just under one year old, their 120 Gallon features a Wildwood Creations "Mako"
Ultra Quiet Hickory Stand and Shroud with a 30 Gallon custom built Refugium. The
system is filtered with tons of Live Rock, Live Sand, Aragonite, Ozonizer, and a
Skimmer. This is returned by a Little Giant pump with a Sea Swirl. A black Aqua
Space Light shines on the main tank while the Refugia is lit with Power Compacts.
There are 12 x fish inhabitants, lots of snails and crabs, over 30 types of Soft
Corals, over 20 types of Stonie corals, a Christmas Rock, a Crocea Clam, a
Squamosa Clam, a Coco Worm, and a Pagoda Bowl. So much to see you’ll be there
all day.
Directions:
Take 700 West to 5986 South. Turn Right on LaSalle Drive and take the next left.
Go East until you get to 546 West. Our place is the Red Brick house on the North
Side of street.

Description:
At Brad’s place is a 65 gallon all glass tank. He has created an underwater world of
living color and beauty with over 65 different corals and 18 different fish; from
green chromises to tangs to rabbitfish. Corals include sps, lps and one Leather
toad stool coral, and he started this only 16 months ago. Don’t miss it!!!
Directions:
Exit I-15 at 53rd south , go west to the light on 1170 West and turn south (left).
Turn East (left) onto Walden Meadows drive which will curve to the right and you
will end up heading south. I’m on the east side of the road with a boat on the side
of my house, you can’t miss it.
Rescue Alert

Description:
This aquarium is a display piece in the lobby of Rescue Alert. It is a 200 gallon
reef aquarium set on a custom built cherry wood base with a canopy that extends
up to the 12 foot high ceiling. The tank features a center overflow allowing you to
see all four sides of the aquarium. The south side features Tongan Kaelini rock
and the north side displays Tongan Branch rock giving two unique perspectives.
Ask for Jared or Richard who are the aquarium’s care takers at Rescue Alert and
members of the Wasatch Marine Society.
Directions:
From I-15 take the 10600 S exit (west bound) and drive up the hill and straight
through the stoplight at 1300 W. Turn right onto the road between Autozone and
Wendys (Beckstead Lane). We are the big brick building behind Autozone with the
Rescue Alert sign in the parking lot.

Description:
There are two tanks to see at Linda’s. The 150 Gallon Reef tank is just over a year
old. It has many beautiful fish including a six inch yellow tangs and a large sailfin
tang. Other fish include a Gold Stripe Maroon (very territorial), a Yellow-headed
sleeper Goby who redecorates my tank daily, Fire Fish, Fishers Angel (direct from
Hawaiian Islands bay, Bangii Cardinals and more. Lots of pretty corals, some
grown from frags from the club. Her 20 Gallon Reef is starter tank with a clown
fish and blue gobies and some Corals
Directions:
While traveling on 7800 South turn south on to 2200 West. Go south to 8070
South which is Bueno Vista Drive. Travel West to 2433 West

Description:
There are two tanks to be found at Cortney’s. A brand new FOWLER tank with a
lonely Trigger fish and a Sea Star has only been set up for a couple of weeks. It
pales to the color and movement in the 54G Corner reef tank. With mostly soft
corals and a few fish, this tank has seen many struggles in the two years it has
been running. Stop by to find out more.
Directions:
From Bangeter Hwy… head west on 6200 South. Take a Left onto 4800 W (5th stop
light with Sonic Burger.) Travel south to 6600 South (it will be the 3rd street after
the crosswalk..don’t count the street with the crosswalk though!) and turn right.
(You can’t turn left…handy no?) 5014 is on the right side of the street and has two
trees in the front yard.

Description:
Come see a chuck full 180 Gallon Reef Aquarium. Many Softies, several SPS,
several LPS, a couple of anemones and mushroom anemones up the wazoo. Will
also has several FW aquariums including 10 gallon guppy tank, 20 gallon
Gorami/Angel Tank, and 75 gallon planted community tank. There may also be a
40 gallon SW Damsel tank by the time of the tour.
Directions:
From Bangeter Hwy… head west on 6200 South. Take a Left onto 4800 W (5th stop
light with Sonic Burger.) Travel south to 6600 South (it will be the 3rd street after
the crosswalk..don’t count the street with the crosswalk though!) and turn right.
(You can’t turn left…handy no?) 5135 West is 2 streets on the left after the stop
sign. My house is on the right side.

Description:
There are two great tanks to see at Bruce’s. The 125 gallon reef has various soft
and hard corals, as well as a variety of fish. To the other extreme, see the 10
gallon reef with 2 anemones and 2 clown fish.
Directions:
Take 4100 South to 6400 West. Make your fist left (east) into the neighborhood,
and then your very next left (north) will be Williamsburg Cir.

Description:
Kamaron just bought a new home and built a 210 gallon see-through tank built inbetween the wall with a 50 gallon sump, and a 30 gallon refrugium. Plumbing is
run into the basement. It is filled with over 27 fish, 180 pounds of live rock and
soft corals.
Directions:
From Bangater Highway go west on 7800 S which turns into New Bingham

Skye has several tanks of interest. 2 salt water, 4 freshwater, one turtle tank and
three lizard tanks. For the reef tour the focus will be on his newly reefed 80 gallon

Vocabulary
Don’t be confused by acronyms and key words thrown around in the Aquarium
descriptions and by WMAS members. Review this list and ask questions!
Additives - Certain minerals (such as calcium and strontium) are sometimes added to
help growth of corals and algae.
Caulerpa - Type green algae commonly used in filtration
DIY (Do It Yourself) - Many hobbyists enjoy creating items for their aquariums
DSB (Deep Sand Bed) - Natural filtration method commonly used in refugia
Frag - Coral cutting. How members propagate corals locally
Kalkwasser - Calcium hydroxide solution added to increase calcium to be used by
corals and some algae.
LFS (Local Fish Store) - Any of the pet stores in the area that support WMAS or the
marine hobby.
Live Rock/Sand - Called “live” because of all the organisms that live on and in the rock
or sand. Live rock and sand are beneficial for filtration
LPS (Large Polyp Stony) - Coral with large polyps
Microvert - Small (to really small) invertebrates that help feed reef inhabitants and
keep the tank clean.
Nano - Small aquariums normally under 20 gallons
Nitrogen Cycle - The process where waste products such as fish urine and uneaten
food is converted by bacteria eventually into Nitrogen. This process vital in
keeping a marine aquarium.
Polyp - The “hands” on corals by which corals collect food
Protein Skimmer - Filtration method where air bubbles are injected into a flow of
water. Waste and food particles adhere to the bubbles and rise to the top of the
water and create foam which is then removed.
Refugia - An additional tank, usually located below the main tank, for the purpose of
filtration, water movement, aeration, microvert colonization, and other many
benefits.
Softies - These corals do not have the hard inner skeleton. Instead their bodies are
made up of tissues. (Leathers, mushrooms, button, etc.)
SPS (Small Polyp Stony) - Coral with smaller polyps
Stonies - A slang term used for all hard corals. These corals have the hard skeleton
made of calcium
Substrate - The floor of the aquarium, generally crushed coral or sand of varying
particle size depending on inhabitant and filtration needs.
