Waterton Lakes
National Park
Visitor’s Guide
Welcome
Waterton Lakes National Park...“the most stunning of the Rocky Mountain Parks,”
according to Frommers Travel Guide. Prairie and lofty mountains meet in an unusual
combination of landscapes and habitats unique in Canadian National Parks.
Abundant and rare wildflower species are found and wildlife is easily seen.
Tucked away in the very southwest corner of Alberta,Waterton's 505 square
kilometers (195 sq. miles) have a unique geologic history. The Lewis Overthrust
continues to expose ancient sedimentary rock. Water sculpts the land with abundant
lakes, streams and waterfalls. Climate adds to its drama. Whether you're a back
country enthusiast, or someone who'd rather curl up with a good book, Waterton lets
you bask in the natural glory of this majestic landscape.
A Brief Cultural History
For more than 10,000 years, travelers have made their way to this special place. Over
300 archaeological sites reveal the activities of the first people.
European explorers and settlers also left their mark. Lt. Thomas Blakiston, a
member of the famous Palliser Expedition, was one of the area's earliest explorers.
He bestowed its current name in honour of the 19th century naturalist Charles
Waterton.
In 1895, Waterton was protected thanks to the efforts of local ranchers including
Fredrick Godsal. John George "Kootenai" Brown, a wilderness trapper, became the
first Park employee.
Around the turn of the 20th century, the discovery of oil in the Park led to the
drilling of Western Canada's first producing oil well. The discovery also contributed
to the establishment of the Waterton community in 1910.
In 1926 the Prince of Wales Hotel was built and has become one of the most
scenic images in Canada. Both the Prince of Wales Hotel and Oil City are designated
national historic sites.
International Significance
Here, nature knows no political boundary. Waterton shares important common
borders including those with adjacent Glacier National Park, Montana. Many natural
processes are common between the Parks. In 1932, Waterton and Glacier together,
were designated as the world's first International Peace Park. The Peace Park concept
was spawned by Rotary Clubs in Montana and Alberta to commemorate the long
friendship between the United States and Canada. The concept has evolved through
time. Today ecosystem management is an important consideration. The fundamental
concept remains the same, communicating the concept of peace and friendship.
Waterton Glacier International Peace Park was the first of hundreds of peace parks
globally. The United Nations recognizes it as an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and
bestowed it with the prestigious World Heritage Site designation.
My Waterton
Today, Waterton is an international tourism destination with over 400,000
visitors from around the world. The tiny Waterton community (year-round
population 100)greet all who come with the spirit of the Peace Park. The
community is steeped in the essence of place and a sense of friendship pervades.
Most businesses here are family-based, handed down through time from one
generation to the next. Peace Park businesses carry Peace Park values. Look
for MyWaterton throughout this publication and online at www.mywaterton.ca
with thoughts and backgrounds from our Waterton community.

Cameron Falls is right in Waterton Village! In 2010, a phenomenal natural spectacle occured. Photographer Rochelle Coffey was at the
right place at the right time to capture this rare event. The Falls ran red after a heavy rain washed sediments into the stream.

Why Is Waterton So Special?
There it is…. From this crest on Lakeview Ridge its easy to see the Great
Plains grasslands running up the slopes of the Rocky Mountains. Natural
habitats meet to create a unique world of abundant and diverse plants and
animals. There are 45 different habitats. They interact with other natural

processes. This is the narrowest point along the Rocky Mountain corridor.
Several natural regions spill across the divide and intermingle. Waterton has
significant weather. It is on the Pacific storm tracks. Winds deliver airborne
seeds and climate is moderated by warmer winds. The result? More than
1,000 native plants, 250 species of birds, more than 60 species of mammals,
24 species of fish and 8 species of reptiles and amphibians! Lots to see!

Begins at the community and runs 16 km (10 mi.) up the Cameron Valley to
glacier-formed Cameron Lake. The parkway gains elevation as it rises above
the Waterton Valley and alongside the deep Cameron Creek canyon. Forested
mountain views, creekside picnic shelters and backcountry trailheads are along
this route. First Oil Well in Western Canada National Historic Site is found
here, which commemorates Western Canada’s first producing oil well. The
Continental Divide parallels the roadway and the boundaries of Alberta, British
Columbia and Montana converge at Cameron Lake. Open in winter for access to
Nordic skiing and snowshoeing.

Be Alert
Be Alert - wild animals are killed on park
roadways. They run in front of your car in an
instant. Slow down and take time to scan the
landscape for the wonders that await you.
Located north of the Park entrance gate is the Bison drive-thru paddock. The
road rolls across a stunning glacial landscape of moraines and eskers. Native
Prairie grasslands there are home to a small herd of plains bison which are
direct descendents from the original herds of the Great Plains.
Park Entrance Road
The 8 km route from the Park gate to the community features outstanding
views of the park's namesake chain of sparkling lakes. Slow down, there are
roadside wildlife, interpretive viewpoint pull-outs and classic Rocky Mountain
vistas.

12 WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK
Hikes and Trails
Waterton has some of the best hiking in the
Canadian Rockies with 225 kilometers of established trails. Some connect with trails in Glacier
National Park, Montana and Akamina-Kishinena Provincial Park in British Columbia.
A guide book and topographical map are
available at village shops. A special option is the
International Peace Park Hike: join a Canadian
park interpreter and an American park ranger
along the Lakeshore Trail. Offered Wednesdays
and Saturdays, you can get a reservation at the
Waterton Visitor Centre. Hire a local guide and
share their knowledge of the park.

My Waterton…Alpine Stables
Its is a very special thing to ride out across
the Waterton landscape with a member
of the Barrus family. The founding father,
Dee Barrus, is a wilderness outfitter trapper, and lover of the wild places. Together
with his wife Lorna, Dee raised his family
in the Waterton backcountry. For four
generations horseback adventurers have
experienced the knowledge and passion
the family share with all who step up into
the saddle to ride Waterton.
“My roots grow deep in this place. I grew
up riding horses in Red Rock Canyon
following my dad to the tops of mountains and over mountain passes. I have
witnessed the power of the elements thru
wind, fire and floods. Inspired by the
beauty, I learned about the flowers and
the importance of wildlife and their natural habitat. Thru the years I have raised
my children and grandchildren with the
same love of this place we call Waterton.”—Deb Watson
On Horseback
Horses played an important role in the early
development of trails in Waterton and Glacier.
Many trails were created to form transportation
linkages between the great lodges, including
the Prince of Wales in Waterton. Horse
transportation was the mode of travel. Huge
pack trains with hundreds of horses, packed
with supplies, mail and “well- to-do” tourists,
would travel through pristine Rocky Mountain
wilderness. Then they would overnight in
elaborate wilderness camps as they travelled
from lodge to lodge.
Today you can still enjoy it all by horseback.
There are qualified services for all skill levels,
each with their own specialty, dedicated to
providing a safe and enjoyable time. From a few
hours to a few days…you choose the length
of your ride and we’ll provide the spectacular
views and wildlife!

Waterton Lake
“The North Big Inside Lake” is what the
Blackfoot call it. “The Lake that talks too
much” is another handle. By any name, Upper
Waterton Lake is a Rocky Mountain classic.
Deeply carved by glaciers from overthrust
sedimentary strata, it is the deepest lake in the
Canadian Rockies at 148 m/487 ft.
Pure and clean, its waters originate from the
very top of the watershed. Born from melting
snowfields and mountain springs, Upper
Waterton Lake feeds the Saskatchewan river
system that empties into Hudson Bay.
Fishing
Waterton’s many fish species include game fish
such as cutthroat trout, lake trout, rainbow
trout and northern pike. Fishing permits and
lake information are available at the Visitors
Centre and at Pat's. Catch and release is the preferred approach as is the respect and protection
of native Bull Trout. Remember to purchase
a National Park fishing license and read the
regulations before putting up your ‘gone fishing’
sign.
My Waterton…Kretz Family:
My Waterton…Suleman Family:

The cruise on upper Waterton Lake is the ultimate Peace Park experience. No stop signs,
no customs, you freely float from Canada
into the United States and back. The majestic
landscape is unencumbered. The trip is made
possible only by the family owned Waterton
Shoreline Cruises.
For three generations, 60 years the Kretz/
Robinson family have safely charted the Upper Waterton Lake. Their on-board narrative
enhances the experience.
“I love the idea of Waterton. It's my birthplace; it's my career choice. Our goal is to
instill in every visitor the same type of stewardship and respect this place stands for.
This area is a symbol for the potential of
the human race when nations and groups
work together. It's an idea of unity to each
other and to nature. If it can work at a small
local level, it can work at a global level.
Waterton is not just a location on the 49th
parallel, it is a location in the hearts of all
who have ventured into its wild and authentic
embrace.” —Kris Robinson

The Suleman family who operate the
Bayshore Inn and Waterton-Glacier Suites
exemplify the values of the Peace Park.
Once refugees from east Africa whose
family holdings were confiscated by an
African dictator, the Suleman’s landed
in Canada and soon reestablished their
businesses. They came to Waterton in the
early 90’s.
Now after 22 years, three generations of
Sulemans have made the Bayshore and its
sister property one of the highest ranking
accommodation and food services in the
Park.
In addition to their world class
hospitality, the family is highly involved in
education and peace initiatives worldwide.
The family helps refugees start their
Canadian careers by employing them, and
have built a school and orphanage overseas.
Water, Water Everywhere
Delicious right from the tap, drinking water here is fresh from
the top of the continental divide. And for recreation, this is a
great place if you like scuba diving, windsurfing, canoeing,
kayaking, row boating, paddle boating, power boating, water
skiing and did we mention fishing?
Waterton has healthy waters and shorelines. Not so in
many other locations. To prevent the introduction of quagga
mussels, a free permit is now required to launch your
motorboat in the Park and an inspection may be required.

A Sacred Place
The Maskinonge is a sacred place to the Blackfoot people. It is
here that the ancient Beaver Bundle was visioned. The Beaver
Bundle contains the essence of spring and is traditionally
opened when the first thunder rumbles across the mountains.
You can learn more about the First Nations of the Waterton.
Scenic pullouts along the Red Rock Canyon Parkway and at
the Maskinonge offer insights into the importance of Waterton
to the Blackfoot and Kootenai People.
My Waterton…Keith B. Robinson
Waterton helps me to put all of life’s complexities and challenges back into perspective. No matter how stressful or difficult the situation, all I have to do is lose myself
momentarily in the Park and I am able to clear my head. Whether scrambling
up a remote mountain peak, mountain biking hours away from the nearest road,
kayaking across the lake to an area devoid of the sounds of civilization, or simply
immersing myself in a book steeped in local history, Waterton has a way of making
me appreciate the simple things in life, and remembering what is really important.

Waterton is considered a bird hot spot. Over 250
species nest or travel through the Park. Golden
eagles soar over mountain ridges during their
migrations. Black-headed grosbeaks, lazuli
buntings and western tanagers grace forests and
shrublands. White-tailed ptarmigan lurk near
subalpine lakes. Varied thrushes lend an ethereal
feeling to ancient subalpine forests. Breathtaking
mountain bluebirds and prairie falcons are
grassland dwellers. Common loons carry their
chicks on their backs while osprey dive to capture
fish in wetland lakes. Careful observers will
find American dippers, spotted sandpipers and
harlequin ducks amidst mountain streams. Enjoy
listening and watching for the special birds who

Christmas count and photographers capture
images only Waterton can present. In February,
visitors can take part in Waterton Winterfest. Fun
events and contests in the townsite and along the
cross country and snowshoe trails highlight the
joys of winter play in Waterton.

Neighbors
Natural communities are valued here and
those values transcend Park boundaries
to the broader community, a community
of private ranchers, landowners and
public land managers. Together they work
to maintain the natural integrity of this
region. This sweeping landscape along
highway 22, was so valued to the community that the local government designated
it as a Scenic Viewshed.
In 1979, Waterton-Glacier were designated Biosphere Reserves by the UNESCO
Man and the Biosphere program. This
program is designed to support the intimate relationship between people and
their environment.
