District Governor’s Message
Dear Rotarians of District 7570,
This is a year of change for Rotary. The most visible change is
the implementation of the Future Vision plan and the impact on
funding and grants from the Rotary Foundation. District Leadership has worked diligently over the past year to train and prepare
all of our clubs on the new grant model and we have had great
success. Our projects will be stronger and we are ready to move
forward with Rotary’s Vision for the Future.
Rotary International President Ron Burton’s theme for 20132014 is ‘Engage Rotary, Change Lives’. This theme speaks to
the heart of all Rotarians because when we are engaged, lives are
changed. But it is not only the lives of those we are helping but
our own lives as well. Whether you are working on a well project
in Sudan, participating in a Stop Hunger Now project or working
on a project in your community, our lives are changed too. We
have many challenges to keep our organization vibrant, healthy
and growing. These challenges will require us to look at different
ways of doing things and that will be difficult. But Rotarians always accept a challenge and we always succeed. We will engage
change and we will be stronger.
The Districts focus over the next year will be divided into three
(3) areas: First, is helping our clubs get stronger and grow. Each
club has a unique personality and the goal of District leadership
is to identify how best to work with that club and its members
allowing the club the flexibility to find solutions to their issues.
Second, is a renewed focus on Polio Eradication thru End Polio
Now. Rotary and its partners have made tremendous strides in
eradicating polio with only three (3) countries remaining with
endemic cases: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. The last one
percent will be the most difficult and the most expensive and we
cannot lose our focus. We made a promise to the world in 1985
that polio would be eradicated from the face of the earth and we
need to honor that promise. And third, is the Rotary Foundation
and the Annual Fund. The Rotary Foundation is a critical part of
local community and world community work and without the donations of Rotarians, we cannot Do Good in the World. The Annual Fund is even more important going forward with the changes
in grants and funding taking effect in 2013-2014. Remember,
Every Rotarian Every Year.
This is also a year of celebration for our District. The Rotary
Club of Roanoke celebrates its Centennial in April 2014 and there
will be special celebrations planned by the District at our annual
conference in March and the Roanoke club in April. During the
year there will be celebrations and projects throughout the District and each club and Rotarian should be proud of the history of
our District. We have done amazing projects in each of our local
communities and our world community and so many people have
been helped by our donations and our hands-on work.
A successful District is due to the teamwork of all its members
and District 7570 is truly successful. Sandi and I are honored to
be part of your team and look forward to meeting and working
with you all this year.

The Rotary Emblem
The early emblem of Rotary International was a
simple wagon wheel (in motion, with dust) representing “civilization and movement.” It was
designed in 1905 by Montague M. Bear of The
Rotary Club of Chicago, who was an engraver.
Most of the early clubs adopted the wheel in one
form or another. Eventually, in 1922, authority
was given to create and reserve an emblem for
the exclusive use of all Rotarians. Accordingly,
in 1923, the present gear wheel with 24 cogs and
six spokes was adopted, and a keyway added to
signify that the wheel was a “worker” and not an
“idler.” An official description of the emblem was
adopted in the 1929 convention in Dallas. Royal
blue and gold were chosen as the official Rotary
Colors, and the flag of Rotary was designed as a
white field with the Rotary wheel emblazoned on
its center. The emblem, worn with pride as a lapel pin, now identifies Rotarians around the world.

The keyway must be visible and it must be
UP.
The shaft hole is OPEN and bears the color
and shading of the space between spokes.
It must contain the word Rotary at the top
and International at the bottom, just inside the
cogs.
The 6 spokes must be equally spaced with one
pair VERTICAL.
It must stand alone, never overlaid with any
other printing, nor integrated into another
design.
When used in color, the colors must be Royal
Blue and Gold.

Ron and Jetta
Ron D. Burton, a member of the Rotary Club of
Norman, Oklahoma, USA, is the retired president of the University of Oklahoma Foundation Inc..
He is a member of the American Bar Association,
“This is an exciting time to be a Rotarian,” Burton
says. “I believe we are well poised to capitalize on
our strengths as we embrace the [RI] Strategic Plan
and the Future Vision Plan. My vision is to have every Rotarian appreciate what it means to be a Rotarian. With these two tools, we can make that happen.”
Active in his community, Burton is a founder and
past president of the Norman Public School Foundation, and founder and past board member of the Norman Community Foundation. A recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, he is a past vice president of the
Last Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
A Rotarian since 1979, Burton is vice chair of the Future
Vision Committee and a member of the Polio Eradication
Advocacy Task Force for the United States. He has served
RI as director; Rotary Foundation trustee and trustee vice
chair; International Assembly moderator, assistant moderator, and group discussion leader; and district governor.
His other service to Rotary includes chair of the 2011
New Orleans Convention Committee, vice chair of the
Investment Advisory Committee, liaison trustee of the
Vocational Service Committee, Permanent Fund national adviser, and regional Rotary Foundation coordinator.
He was aide to 2006-07 RI President William B. Boyd.
Burton has received the RI Service Above Self Award
and The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, Distinguished Service Award, and International Service Award for a Polio-Free World.
Burton and his wife, Jetta, have two children and three
grandchildren.

Anne
Anne L. Matthews is president of Matthews and Associates, an educational firm in Columbia, SC. She has three
earned degrees, including a doctorate from the University of South Carolina. She is an educator by profession, an author of business texts, and a public speaker.
She served as president of several national educational organizations. Anne has spoken and/or consulted
in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and 20 foreign countries
on educational issues and/or the Rotary Foundation.
Anne is the past president of the Rotary Club of Columbia East and served as District Governor of D-7770
in 1999-2000. She completed a three-year term as the
District’s Foundation chair in June, 2006, and during
the 2006 Rotary year, D-7770 was ranked as number
one in the world in Annual Giving and number seven
in total giving to the Foundation. Anne initiated the
Paul Harris Society in 2005-06, the Centennial year,
and District 7770 secured 125 chartered members.
Anne completed a three-year term as the Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator for Zone 33 June, 2009.
Anne was appointed by RI Presidents D. K. Lee and
John Kenney to serve as the Lead Seminar Trainer at
the International Assembly in San Diego in January,
2008, and in 2009. She is presently serving as a member of TRF’s Future Vision Plan Committee for 200912, Anne was nominated by RIPE Ray Klinginsmith
and elected by the RI Board to serve as a member of
The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees. In September 2010, Anne was elected by the Zone 33 Nominations Committee to serve as Rotary International
Director for Zones 33 and 34, effective July 1, 2012.
Anne is a sustaining member, multiple Paul Harris Fellow,
Major Donor, charter member of the Bequest Society and
the Paul Harris Society, Benefactor, and a Ten Star Rotarian.
Anne received The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for
Meritorious Service, The Rotary Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award, and Rotary International’s
highest honor, the Service Above Self award. In 2006,
she was honored as D-7770’s Rotarian of the Year.

Eric and Linda
Eric joined the Rotary Club of Front Royal in 1974,
He was President of his club in 1980 and District Governor for District 7570 in 1995-96. He was 2008-10
Director of Rotary International Board of Directors
and Vice President of Rotary International 2009-10.
He has been District RYLA Chair and District Polio Chair
raising over $700,000 for Polio Eradication. He has participated in and visited Foundation matching grant projects
in South Africa, Costa Rica, Argentina and India. He was a
GSE team leader to Argentina in 1994. Active in RI Council
on Legislation matters, Eric was a delegate in India in 1998,
C&B committee chair and COL Operations Committee in
2001, and member at large to Council in 2004 and 2007.
Eric has chaired several RI Committees and served
as an International Assembly Instructor. He currently is board member & past chair of the Zone 33 Rotary Leadership Institute. He was awarded the Service
Above Self award from Rotary International in 2005.
He received the Award for Meritorious Service
from the Rotary Foundation. He has represented
the President of Rotary International at many District Conferences. Eric and his wife Linda are Major Donors, and Special Bequest Society Members.
In his community Eric has also volunteered his services.
He has been a Trustee of a National Trust for Historic
Preservation estate, a vestryman, Sunday school teacher,
a member of the Board of local hospital, and is a Trustee
and Corporate Secretary of the Northern Virginia Regional
4-H Board. Eric retired from active private law practice
but is active as a real estate investor and owns a health
club. He attended the University of Virginia where he
received his B.A. and Juris Doctor degrees and George
Washington University where he obtained a Masters of
Law in Taxation. He and his wife have four grown children and six grandchildren of whom they are very proud.

Edgar C. Hatcher, Jr.

Ed and Jo Ann
Ed Hatcher is a native of Bristol, Virginia, attended local
schools, was an undergraduate student at Virginia Tech and
graduated from the Medical College of Virginia with the
degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery, and is the recipient
of an honorary doctoral degree from Han Nam University,
Taejon, Korea. He was one of his profession’s pioneers as
a clinician, lecturer and author in cosmetic dentistry, oral
implantology and dental ceramics. A recognized leader in
health planning, having lectured nationally and internationally on Health Planning in America, he continues to play a
vital role in the region’s health care. He serves on several
committees of Welmont Health System Board of Directors, an association of hospitals providing health care for
the people of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.
Ed joined the Rotary Club of Bristol VA/TN in 1958. In
1996 he was elected a member of the Board of Directors
of RI. His participation in Rotary programs and activities
at the district and international level has continued since
being named Governor of District 7570 in 1985. He is best
known as D-7570’s leader of the Rotary Health Complex
and Hospital in Jessore, Bangladesh, and the medical clinic
and dental clinic at the Rotary Soup Kitchen and Training
Center in Quezon, City, Philippines. He has served on numerous committees at the international level, having served
as Chairman of the Public Relations Committee, the World
Community Service Task Force, the Communications
Committee and the WCS Resource Network. He was one of
Rotary’s leaders in population concerns and sustainable development. Rotary’s return to China was one of Ed’s most
ardent goals, spearheading that movement for over a decade.
Ed has received the RI Service Above Self Award, Rotary’s highest honor. He is also the recipient of the Citation for Meritorious Service and the Distinguished Service Award for his support of The Rotary Foundation’s
educational and humanitarian programs. Ed and Jo Ann
are Paul Harris Fellows, Benefactors and Major Donors.
Ed is a Charter Member of the Bequest Society, a Skelton Fellow, and a Sustaining Member of the Foundation.
Ed and Jo Ann have three daughters, two sons-in-law
and three grandchildren who are Paul Harris Fellows.

Ronald L. Mabry
Ron and Sandi
Ronald L. Mabry lives in Front Royal and is a charter
member of the Linden Rotary Club. Ron served as Charter
President for 18 months. Ron has served as AG for Area
1 and has served on the District RIF Future Vision Transition and World Community Service committees. Ron has
served on the Board of the Linden Rotary Club and the
Fundraising Committee and has chaired the Foundation
Committee. Ron has had perfect attendance since 2005, is
a Sustaining Member, Paul Harris Fellow and Benefactor.
Ron received a B.S. in Political Science from Madison
College and a Masters of Public Administration from
George Mason University. He is also a graduate of the
Senior Executive Institute at the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia. He
has worked in the public and private sectors over the past
37 years and is currently the Town Treasurer and Director of Finance for the Town of Culpeper, Virginia. Ron
has served on numerous local boards and commissions
in the Front Royal area including United Way, Healthy
Families-Warren, the Front Royal-Warren Chamber of
Commerce, the Front Royal-Warren Economic Development Authority, Warren County Planning Commission and
the Front Royal Board of Zoning Appeals. Ron currently
serves on the Board for the Samuels Library Foundation.
Ron’s wife, Sandi, is also a charter member of the Linden Rotary Club and serves on the Membership Committee. She chairs the District Foundation Alumni Committee. She was a GSE Team member to Turkey from
District 7570 in 1996 and was GSE Team Leader from
District 7570 to Brazil in 2008. Sandi is a Sustaining
Member and Paul Harris Fellow. She is a Family Nurse
Practitioner, currently working on a part-time grant to establish a Women’s Health Clinic at the Veteran’s Community Outreach Clinic in Stephens City. She is retired from
Front Royal Family practice, after 20 years of practice.
Ron and Sandi have a son, Christopher, who lives with his
wife Sara and son, Collin, in Bristol, Virginia. Chris is on
the faculty at King College in Bristol, Tennessee. Ron
and Sandi enjoy traveling and have numerous international
‘children’ in France, Turkey, Thailand and the Netherlands.

Vivian Crymble
Vivian and Al
Vivian Crymble lives in Kingsport, TN and is a Charter
member of the Tri-Cities Rotary Club at Bristol Motor
Speedway. She chartered her club in 1988. Vivian has
served three times as the club’s president and also as treasurer, secretary and on the board of directors. She has served as
an Assistant Governor and Chairman of the District Training Committee. She will serve as Rotary District Governor
in 2014-2015. Vivian and her husband Al, also a Rotarian,
have hosted incoming GSE Team members over the years.
Vivian received a B.S. in Sociology and Psychology from
East Tennessee State University. She has served in many
management roles throughout her career. Vivian has been
a marketing executive in the fields of construction services,
energy resources, technology and health care. She also has
extensive experience in education and corporate training.
Currently she is Foundation Coordinator for Indian Path
Medical Center a part of Mountain State Health Alliance.
Vivian’s husband Al retired from IBM, owned his own
consulting business and currently serves as a network coordinator for an office furniture company. Al has served as
President of the Kingsport Rotary Club. Both Vivian and Al
are multi-level Paul Harris Fellows, Sustainers and Skelton
Fellows. They enjoy reading, family and friends and travel.
Vivian currently serves as co-chair of the City of Kingsport
Gateway Commission and Treasurer of the Emergency Communication (911) Board. She has been recognized as one
of “25 Women of Influence” by the Business Journal of TriCities TN/VA and is a YWCA Tribute to Women recipient.
Vivian and Al have three sons, Sean, Matthew and Kennon; a daughter-in-law Kathleen a grandson, Kennon Carter and a granddaughter Kaylee. Sean is Assistant Director over IT for the Admissions Department
at the University of South Carolina; Matthew is in Albuquerque, NM with Transportation Security Administration and Kennon and his family are in Loudoun
County, VA where he works with government projects.

Alex Wilkins
Alex and Janice
Alex Wilkins lives in Stuart, VA and is a member of the Rotary Club of Stuart. He has served as a Sergeant-at-Arms,
Director, and President of that club. Alex served as the
District 7570 Lieutenant Governor in 2012-13 and Area
7 Assistant Governor for 2013-14. Alex has received the
District Governor’s 110% award twice.
Alex received a B.A. in English from The Citadel, graduated from the USMC Command and Staff College, and has a
MBA from Averett University. He retired from the United
States Marine Corps in 2002 after serving 24 years and participating in two armed conflicts. During his Marine Corps
career, he commanded a Marine Fighter-Attack Squadron
of F/A-18s, was assigned twice to billets at the Pentagon,
and was present at that location during 9/11. Alex is currently employed by Federal Express as a commercial pilot. During his two careers, Alex has visited all continents
except Antarctica. He has attended Rotary clubs in Hiroshima Japan, Atsugi Japan, Seoul Korea, and Delhi India.
Alex is a Deacon of the Stuart Baptist Church, serves on
the committee of the local Boy Scout Troop and has been a
registered Boy Scout since age 11. He has hiked more than
three quarters of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia and all
of it in Georgia. Alex is also a member of the Martinsville
Blue Ridge Airport Authority Board of Directors.
Alex’s wife Janice earned her B.S. in Nursing at Radford,
and is the Director of Nursing at Richfield Retirement
Community in Salem. Janice is a member of the Rotary
Club of Stuart where she has served as Director, and President. Janice currently serves as the chair of the District
Training Committee. She is a recipient of the 110% award
and the Five Avenues of Service Award. She is the Past
President of the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce.
Janice served as President of the Virginia Rural Health Association for two years from 2010-2012 and has received
two prestigious Rural Health awards since 2009.
Alex and Janice are Major Donors, Sustainers, and Benefactors. They have two adult sons; Davis and Brandon and
a daughter-in-law Holli (Brandon’s wife). Both sons are
Officers in the United States Marine Corps.

Aneita joined the RC of Front Royal in 1993 and served as president in 2002-2003. She is a PHF, sustainer, a Skelton Fellow and
a reciepient of the Avenues of Service Award. Her husband David
is PHF. She chaired the District Interact Committee for 2 terms
and attended the Convention in Barcelona in 2003. Aneita has
a B.S. from Shenandoah College and is a graduate of the UVA
Banker School. Aneita had a 29-year career with BB&T Mortgage. Since retirement her time is devoted to Rotary, church,
and being available to family and friends. Aneita is a past president of the Front Royal Chamber and lifetime member of Beta
Sigma Phi Sorority. She was honored with the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award in 2006 by the Shenandoah Area Council
of Boy Scouts of America and the Athena Award from General
Motors in 2004. Her husband David is a Paramedic with Fairfax
County Fire and Rescue. She enjoys reading, music, hiking, and
being involved in all the activities surrounding her four children
and family.

Tim joined the Rotary Club of Woodstock in October 2000 and
served as Club President in 2005-2006. Tim is a Paul Harris Fellow and a Club Sustainer. He is a graduate of James Madison
University with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Master
of Education in Counseling Psychology. Tim is the Sheriff of
Shenandoah County. He is also a graduate of the FBI’s 202nd
Session of the National Academy for Law Enforcement Administrators. Tim, his wife Karen, and their daughter Mona live in
Maurertown, Virginia. He enjoys hunting, hiking and vegetable
gardening.

Chris joined the Rotary Club of Harrisonburg, , in April 2001 and served as Club
President in 2008-2009. Chris is a Paul Harris Fellow and a
Sustainer. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of
Science in Accounting and James Madison University with a
Master’s in Business Administration. Chris is President of Eddie
Edwards Signs, Inc; a regional graphics and signage firm. Chris
and his wife Jennifer, live near Bridgewater, Virginia, and they
have two grown children. He enjoys hunting, hiking and biking.

Nancy has been a member of the Rotary
Club of Waynesboro since 2004, serving
as President, and Aide to the DG 2007-2009. She is a Multiple PHF, Sustainer, a RLI graduate, a recipient of the Rotarian Vocational Service Award and the Four Avenues of Service
Citation. She was the GSE Team Leader to Northern Italy.
Nancy has been an RN for 37 years, in hospitals, coordinating
community health care, and teaching nursing. She has a BSN
(WVA), an MSN (UVa), and is a DNSc Candidate in Nursing
Science at the Catholic University of America. She is the Clinical Coordinator at the Augusta Regional Free Clinic. Nancy
lives on a mountain-top golf course, enjoys golf and is an avid
reader. She recently rescued a golden retriever named Sophie.

Shannon Watts is President of Key Fundraising, a consulting firm providing strategic, effective and innovative fundraising results for nonprofit organizations.
Shannon is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she received a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communications. She is also a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE). Shannon is a Past
President of the Lynchburg Rotary Club. She is currently
the Future Vision Advocate for Area 5 in District 7570.

Dave joined the Covington – Hot Springs
Rotary club in 2008 and has served as its
Secretary, President-Elect and President. He received a Masters Degree in City & Regional Planning from Rutgers University and is the Executive Director of the Alleghany Highlands
Economic Development Corporation. Dave has also served on
the boards of directors of a housing and redevelopment authority, workforce investment board, regional economic development marketing organization, YMCA, an easement holding
land conservation trust and a cooperative pre-school, among
others. He also had the privilege of serving a term on the Williamsburg, VA City Council. Dave enjoys reading, landscape
gardening, golfing and is an avid sports fan.

Alex joined the Stuart Rotary Club in 2008 and served as president in 2011-12. He is a Major Donor, a multiple PHF, a multiple
Sustainer, a PHS member, and a Benefactor. Alex retired from
the United States Marine Corps in 2002 as a LtCol after 24 years
of flying tactical aircraft. He is now employed as a commercial
pilot for FedEx. Alex received his BA in English from The Citadel, and two Masters degrees. His wife, Janice is also the past
president of the Stuart Rotary club. They are members of the
Stuart Baptist Church where Alex is a past Deacon. They have
two grown sons, both of which are Officers in the United States
Marine Corps.

Beth joined the Roanoke Downtown club
in 2008 where she has served as Treasurer, President-Elect,
and President. She serves on the District Strategic Planning
and the District Training Committees. Beth chaired the Rotary’s Blue Ridge Marathon project . Beth received her Bachelors from the U of Alabama and her Masters from the U of
Houston. She serves as the Executive Director of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. Prior experience includes her
Non-Profit consulting business and the United Ways of Houston, Charlotte, NC and Roanoke. She is married to Orvis Fly

Manager at Price Waterhouse, he then served as CFO of Marley
USA, traded on the London Exchange. He now consults in forensic accounting and business restructuring cases, and is certified
in business valuation, economic damages and fraud examination.
Dick and his wife Ginger live in Jonesborough TN and have three
children and two grandchildren. Dick and Ginger enjoy gardening, traveling, reading, scuba and horses.

Aaron Garber joined the RC of Salem in 2003
where he has served as President and Membership Chair. He was the Governor’s representative in the formation of the RC of the Blue
Ridge–New Generations and received the
110% award. Aaron has served on several District Committees. Aaron composed the 2011
Rotary Theme Song “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity”. Aaron premiered the song at the International Assembly in San Diego
in 2011. He is a RLI graduate, a multiple PHF and a Sustainer.
Aaron is the Director of Music Ministry at Trinity Ecumenical
Parish in Moneta, the Founder, Conductor, and Music Director
of The Chorus of the Blue Ridge in Roanoke, and the Conductor
and Music Director of the Jefferson Choral Society in Lynchburg.
He is also a published music composer. Aaron Garber holds a
B.A. in Music from Bridgewater College, where he was named
2007 Young Alumnus of the Year. He also has a M.M. in Choral
Conducting from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Aaron
and his wife, Melia, a Romanian-born concert pianist, have two
children.
