ENGLAND - eBay UK taking a stand…?
Concerns by British police regarding the amount of military type knives that are finding their way into the
hands of juveniles has been causing much controversy in the UK.
It is believed, that many underage youngsters have been purchasing
their knives through eBay.
By using their parents details and credit cards some kids have successfully bid for and won knives ranging from Commando daggers to
a variety of other fixed blade combat weapons.
Earlier this year, in order to comply with police concern, a spokesperson from eBay UK officially
stated that they will ban all military knives and daggers from their auction platform, and even though
they said it would take only a matter of a few weeks to implement, this has still not eventuated.
Whether eBay will go ahead with this commitment remains to be seen as the knives in question are
still found in abundance on their sites.
EICKHORN In this business we naturally receive a lot of knife related questions that cover everything from
the manufacturing of knives to their history and identification. .
However, lately, a few customers have been
asking about the tangs in Eickhorn fixed blade
military knives.
Many knives in the lesser known and lower
quality range often have shorter or partial
tangs, sometimes known as rat-tail tangs.
These tangs extend only partially into the
handle of the knife and, although may be
strong enough and acceptable for some,
are naturally not as tough as full tang blades.
Like many top brand knife names, Eickhorn,
provide a full tang in their fixed blade knives.
If you look at the OES KM3000, for example,
you will notice at the pommel end of the handle
there is an extension of steel showing. This
steel extension has many obvious uses, but in
this case it clearly indicates the width and
length of the tang.
SPECIAL Message from William RODGERS (Egginton Bros)
The word from William Rodgers in Sheffield is that there could be something very special coming
out of their factory shortly. It is believed that they are planning, with the co-operation of the British
Commando Veteran Association, a special edition FS Dagger to commemorate the 70th Anniversary
of the foundation of the Commando’s in 1940.
No doubt these knives will be a limited edition
series and, very possibly, unlike any commemorative daggers made before.
I cannot qualify the reason why I say that right
now, but I know if everything I hear is true, they
will be well worth waiting for.
So, for all you collectors and knife connoisseurs
out there, this could be a very good time to start
saving your pennies.

M9 Bayonet by Ontario
The Ontario M9 bayonet has had it’s day according to some military sources. Like many modern
bayonets, the M9 was designed to serve as a multi-purpose weapon and tool. First, it was a bayonet, then a combat knife and finally a utility tool which was used for many varying purposes.
However, as many well know, blades are designed to be used for either one thing or another, but
rarely as a collective all purpose tool. Combat knives particularly, are purpose built and are never
used for digging or other sundry tasks.
The combat knife is usually a soldiers last
means of defence, and when it is needed it
has to be in perfect shape and ready to do
the job required.
Some sources say that the M9 is too heavy
and unbalanced and takes a lot of sharpening
to maintain it’s effectiveness. Personally I
would not know about that but these reasons,
and no doubt there are others, have helped
contribute to the M9’s drop in popularity.
Many countries have now abandoned the use
of the M9. Last year the USMC placed a
huge order with Eickhorn for the new
SG2000WC which was to replace their current M9’s.
The Eickhorn SG2000 WC
However, because of the difficulties with the
recent global financial upset, President
Obama issued a Presidential directorate that
all new military purchases, wherever possible,
should be made purchasing American made products. This, much to the disdain of the USMC, included bayonets and the Eickhorn contract had to be cancelled for the time being. The Eickhorn
SG2000WC has proven a worthy replacement of the M9 by those member countries of the NATO
Alliance who have adopted it. Perhaps we will even see Australia take on this weapon in the not too
distant future.
STOLEN KNIVES…?
As a knife collector myself, I know one of the worst things that could possibly happen is to
have any or all of my knives stolen. Often the police do manage to retrieve the stolen goods
but, unfortunately, this is not always the case and they can sometimes just disappear never to
be seen again. For many of us, our collections represent a large cash investment and that’s
not even considering the historic value of some of the knives, nor the years taken to accumulate them.
If there are any of our newsletter readers who have had their knives stolen and not yet recovered by the authorities, then they can send a description of the items to us here at PB. We
will then print details of these missing knives in our next Newsletter with the intention that
someone out there may know or may have seen something that can help in getting your knives
back to where they rightfully belong. Please email me on [email protected] and I
will include these requests in our next Newsletter edition.
