From the Wing Leader
Hello Everyone,
First, the October Wing Meeting will be on Saturday, October 19th starting at 1:30
because of the scheduling conflict with the Midland Airsho.
It has been a very busy last few weeks and will continue into October. We went to
the Terrell Airshow and did very well. Tours, rides and PX totaled a little over
$3000.00. A very good day.
Last Saturday, September 28, the R4D went to the Waco Airshow. Unfortunately,
the rain kept us from flying and doing much in the PX. We had to drive members
back to Lancaster because of the weather.
Thursday, October 3rd, Jim Breitenstine and Russ Coonley flew the R4D to DFW airport
for the Transportation Expo being held Friday the 4th of October. Ken Norvell, Ken Kovar
and Craig Eaton were on hand to show students the aircraft.
The R4D will remained at DFW on Saturday for Skyball XI. Sunday, October 6 the R4D
went to the McKinney Air show.
The R4D then headed to Midland on Friday, October 11 to participate in the Midland
Airsho. The really exciting news is the L-5 engine is back at the hangar. Jim Breitenstine
and I drove to HIcks Airfield to meet Marty Case to load up the engine for transport to
Lancaster.
I would like to thank everyone for their volunteering for the various events we have done
and will be doing.

Museum Article
Ontario Pilot Survival Knife
Since 1889 the Ontario Knife Company has
been manufacturing quality cutlery; first in
Naples, Ontario County, NY and now in
Franklinville, NY in Cattarugus County. Ontario
knives are standard military issue with the U. S.
Armed Forces and also popular with outdoor
enthusiasts.
Ontario has been supplying quality knives to
the U.S. Military since WWII. Over the years
these products have included the M9 Bayonet,
the M7 Bayonet, Marine Corp OKC 3S Bayonet,
the Pilots Survival Knife, the Aircrew Survival
Egress Knife System (ASEK) used in the Air Warrior Equipment System,
Marine Corps Combat Knife, Mark III Model O Navy Knife, the 18" Military
Machete, the SP16 Spax and the OKC Rescue Tool. The ASEK is a multifunction took that can be used to break Plexiglas, as a hammer, the serrated
edge is to used by aircrew to cut through the aluminum skin of a crashed
aircraft or helicopter; the system also has spear holes, lanyard hole and
insulated guard, anodized aluminum strap cutter, screwdriver and a honing
rod.
During Warbirds On Parade, Mr. Don Wooldridge donated an Ontario Pilots
Survival Knife and Sheath to the CAF DFW Wing. The knife is approximately
9 1/2" overall; the blade is 5", handle is leather with steel pommel dated
"ONTARIO, NY; 1 1969"; sheath is leather with pocket for sharpening stone;
the sheath contains no sharpening stone.

R-4D Roost
The R4D traveled to the 50th anniversary of
Airsho where she enjoyed quite the success. It
was very enjoyable for visitors to see her among
other airplanes that she served with. However,
there have been some complications in getting
the Gooney Bird back home to Lancaster.
Inclement weather has prevented her from flying
back. Thankfully, the crew was able to ride back
to D/FW in style. Well maybe in coach… in the
back of a Toyota. In all seriousness the Wing is
looking to pick her up this Saturday. After all, if
Col. Mario can’t get his hands on the R4D to
continue polishing her, he might just go crazy.

Stearman Space
The Stearman traveled to Terrell Texas for
their airshow with good success. She flew
several rides, dazzling new passengers with the
nostalgia of the open cockpit days. There have
not been any new pilot check-outs; however, she
has proven to be a reliable fixture in the wing as
she is not suffering from any mechanical
problems. All in all the Stearman has just been
helping out the Wing by continuing to chug
along.

BT Corner
Thanks to the superior skill of the DFW Wing,
the BT did not experience any mechanical
troubles. Rather, the BT flew to two airshows
this past month, one in Terrell with the
Stearman, and one in Palestine, TX. Col. Chris
Volpe reluctantly accepted the offer to sacrifice
his time and suffer through the horrible
vibrations in taking the BT to both. Once he
arrived he was able to con several people in to
going up with him for rides. In all actuality the
Wing thanks him for bringing Little Noodle to the
public and sharing her with them.

L-5 lair
The engine rebuild is over! Col. Marty Case and
Harry Rose have finished the long and often tedious
overhaul of the L-5’s Lycoming. Currently, the engine
resides at Lancaster awaiting installation. However,
before that process can begin, some finishing touches
on the firewall need to be addressed. Additionally,
there needs to be some fixes on the cowling bulkhead
as the previous one has been repaired to death. One
new piece of equipment that will be on the new engine
is an oil filter, this will allow the oil to run clean, and
prevent the buildup of sludge that was discovered in
the crankcase.
