Here’s a fun opportunity to learn more about the services the Town of

The interactive Citizen’s Academy meets on Thursday evenings and
focuses on how daily government operations contribute to a better

On Sunday, September 11, 2016, the sidewalks of the Windsor Town
Green will be lined with 2,973 decorated luminary bags. Each bag will
represent an individual who lost their life on 9/11. At dusk, the bags
will be illuminated with glow sticks.
If you or your organization is interested in volunteering for this event, or
decorating some of the luminary bags, contact Enita Jubrey at 285-1835.

September 1: Get basic computer help or learn how to use your
new tablet or phone at the Windsor Public Library’s One-on-One
Computer Help. Participants sign up for half hours sessions
between 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and get assistance during that

September 1: Windsor’s Farmers Market continues today and
every Thursday through October 20 at 240 Broad Street (corner of
Broad and Maple). Shop a variety of fresh locally grown produce
and specialty items from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Come support

September 1: Beginning tonight, Hwa Yu Tai Chi class will
meet from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the L.P. Wilson Community
Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays through November 24.
Hwa Yu is known for its usefulness in toning muscles, improving
balance and strengthening bones by encouraging students to
work with and develop their deeper muscle tissues. $50.00.

September 6: Windsor is full of iconic places. Capture your
favorite and enter Windsor Historical Society’s Insta-Icon
Photo Contest. Enter by: 1) following us on Instagram @
windsorhistoricalsociety, then 2) make your profile public,
and 3) tag your photo with #windsorcticon. You’ll be entered
automatically for a chance to win a tote bag and one-year family
membership to the Windsor Historical Society. Winners will
be announced on September 26th on the Society’s Instagram

September 6: The Windsor Commission on Aging and
Persons with Disabilities will meet tonight from 7:00 PM
until adjournment in the Dr. Primus Room at Town Hall. Free.

September 7: Cardio Mix is a program designed to target
major muscle groups and effective weight training. It meets at the
L.P. Wilson Community Center from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM each
Monday and Wednesday through October 26. Classes end with

September 7: Bring Your Gadgets to the Geeks at the
Windsor Public Library on the first and third Wednesday evening
of the month. No appointment necessary, bring your devices and
questions, the Geeks will be available on the Mezzanine from
7:00 PM to 8:30 PM and their advice is free. 860-285-1918.
September 7: The Windsor Youth Commission will meet
tonight from 7:00 PM until adjournment in the L.P. Wilson Board
of Education Meeting Room. Free. 860-285-1993.
September 7: For a fast paced aerobic workout in shallow and
optional deep water utilizing water’s properties of buoyancy and
resistance, try Water Fitness. Work your way to a stronger

September 8: The Windsor Democratic Town Committee
will meet tonight from 7:00 PM until adjournment in the Council

September 9: Enjoy a fresh-from-the-farm dinner at “Farms to
Fork,” at Northwest Park from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Dinner will
be freshly prepared for your enjoyment and served on sturdy, ecofriendly tableware. Wine will be served. $50.00 per ticket. After
dinner there will be a 10-item auction and a Wine Pull in which
you could win a nice bottle worth $100! All proceeds benefit the
Windsor Education Foundation. Tickets can be purchased online

September 10: The Windsor Woman’s Club of Connecticut
and GFWC will be selling Mums on the Windsor Town Green in
front of the eagle monument from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Cost is
3 for $18.00 or $7.00 each. All of the proceeds benefit Windsor

September 10: Learn-and-Play Second Saturday at Windsor
Historical Society from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Try out our new
train table, build something spectacular with Legos, “milk”
Flavia the cow, don colonial costumes and “cook” up a feast!
Scavenger hunts are available and we’ll read a story together
at 10:00 AM. Regular house tours of our completely hands-on
Strong-Howard House will still be held at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.

September 11: Join naturalist-author “Wildman” Steve Brill
from 9:30AM to 11:30 AM for a Wild, Edible, Useful, and
Medicinal Plants foraging tour at Northwest Park. The twohour walking tour of the grounds is suitable for adults and
kids. With cultivated areas, meadows, fields, disturbed habitats,
woods, plus a river, all with their own flora, there will be plenty
of surprises in store on this tour. Sponsored by the Friends of

September 11: In commemoration of the 15th anniversary of
9-11, the Town of Windsor will host a Walk of Light community
remembrance ceremony. 3,000 luminary bags, one for each
individual who lost their life on September 11, 2001 have been
decorated by Windsor students and residents. The bags will line
the sidewalks of the Windsor Town Green and be illuminated
with glow sticks at dusk. A remembrance ceremony honoring
fallen heroes will be held from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Following
the ceremony, those in attendance can stroll the town green and
view the luminary bags and reflect on the historic event in their

September 12: BettyLou Sandy, owner of BettyLou’s Gardening
will share her knowledge of gardening particularly about
preparing the garden for the winter at tonight’s Windsor
Garden Club meeting from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the L.P.
Wilson Community Center. She will also be speaking about
planting winter vegetables as well as which spring vegetables can
go into the ground at this time of the year. Free. New members

September 12: Set a goal to improve your public speaking skills at
Windsor Toastmasters at the L.P. Wilson Community Center from 7:00
PM to 8:30 PM. We can teach you to speak effectively in front of groups

Windsor Public Schools Opens New
Office of Family and Community
Partnership
September 13: Windsor C.A.R.E.S. (Citizens Assisting Residents
Everywhere by Sharing) meets today at the L.P. Wilson Community
Center in the All Purpose One room from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Here is
an opportunity to get involved in community service projects that benefit
others such as making sandwiches for homeless people, adopting a
family, preparing a meal for a shelter and more. Volunteer for as little or

The Windsor Public Schools district
has been awarded a grant from
the Hartford Foundation for Public
Giving to support family and
community partnership in student
learning and student success.
This proposal was the result of a
two-year effort at Windsor Public Schools to develop a plan designed
to engage and partner with parents and community stakeholders in
support of raising student achievement.
September 13: Never send a boring Thank You again. Join us for a
Card Making Workshop at the Windsor Public Library from 6:30 PM to
8:30 PM. We’ll use paper cutting techniques and embossing techniques
to create thoughtful, one-of-a-kind well wishes for your friends and loved

September 13: The Windsor Woman’s Club of Connecticut and
GFWC will meet from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM on the second Tuesday
of each month at the L.P. Wilson Senior Center. Meetings are held

September 13: Art Demonstration by Kelly Smurthwaite from 6:45
PM to 8:45 PM at the L.P. Wilson Community Center, sponsored by the
Windsor Palette and Brush Club. Kelly will be demonstrating painting

September 14: Are you doing business in Windsor? Are you looking for
a common sense approach to growing your business? Then the Windsor
Business Connection is for you! Please join us at the Windsor Chamber
of Commerce Office at 261 Broad Street from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM on
the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Windsor Business
Connection is a great way to meet other local business owners. The
meetings will offer opportunities for sharing information about your
business as well as referrals and testimonials. Please bring your business

September 14: The SHARE GROUP meets today at Fitch Court in the
Community Room from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Open to those who reside

September 14: The Windsor Insurance Commission will meet tonight
from 5:30 PM until adjournment in the Dr. Primus Room at Town Hall.

September 14: The Windsor Human Relations Commission will
meet tonight from 7:15 PM until adjournment in the Ludlow Room at
The school district is using the awarded funds to establish a new Office
of Family and Community Partnership. This new office aims to develop
families, school staff, and community partners’ knowledge, skills,
and other capacities to engage in productive partnerships focused on
student success.
Russell Sills, former Windsor High School Principal, serves as Director
of School, Family, and Community Partnerships. His role is to oversee
and coordinate the districts’ efforts in engagement and partnerships
with families and the community with the ultimate goal of increased
student achievement. Elizabeth Lepak, former Family Resource Center
Coordinator at Poquonock School, serves as the new Assistant for
Family and Community Partnership.
“We have seen firsthand that when school districts work with parents
as partners, student achievement improves,” said Windsor Public
Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Cooke. “Russell and Elizabeth
both have strong backgrounds in engaging families in the school
environment and will bring an academic focus to our efforts. They
are well known in the Windsor community and already have a solid
understanding of the importance of partnerships and how they lead to
increased student success.”

September 15: WIN-TV Introduction to Digital Video Editing &
Basic Field Production begins today and meets on Thursdays through
October 13 at the WIN-TV studios located at L.P. Wilson Community
Center. Choose either the 10:00 AM to noon or 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
session. You will learn how to shoot basic footage for a short piece on a
topic you enjoy or for your own business or non-profit, as well as how to
use Final Cut Pro X to learn the basics of editing which you can apply to

September 15: Adult Ballet and Exercise for those new or returning
to dance will meet from 12:30 PM to 1:25 PM each Thursday through
November 7 in the ballet room at the L.P. Wilson Community Center. This
class strengthens muscles and teaches proper alignment of the spine for

September 15: The Windsor Chamber of Commerce Business
After Hours will be held today from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM,
hosted by the 360 Federal Credit Union located at 1901 Day
Hill Road in Windsor. Area businesses have the opportunity to
network with other businesses in a social atmosphere and build
relationships. Bring your business cards and enjoy! There will be a

September 15: Here’s your chance to learn more about the
operation of the Town of Windsor and get a “behind the scenes
look” at day-to-day operations. The seven-week interactive
Citizen’s Academy begins tonight in the Town Hall Council
Chambers from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. See what happens when a
911 call is received, climb up in a snow plow, try on firefighting
equipment and more! Learn about town and Board of Education
departments, how you can participate in the decisions of the
Town Council, tour the town and visit various town facilities
uncovering facts about your town services you never knew! Free.

September 15: Will Siss, author of Connecticut Beer: A
History of Nutmeg State Brewing (The History Press), will
present a beer tasting and talk about local beer. The columnist
for the Waterbury Republican-American will focus on the growth
of breweries from early in Connecticut’s history to today. He’ll
also talk about how to drink like a “beer snob” during his
presentation. The presentation will be from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

September 16: Every 3rd Friday of the month a WIN-TV PSA
Filming Day is held from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the WIN-TV
studios at the L.P. Wilson Community Center. WIN-TV assists
non-profits and civic groups to film a 30 second public service
announcement about their organization or upcoming event. Free.

September 17: The 20th anniversary Windsor Freedom
Trail Run will begin at 5:30 AM at the Archer Memorial
A.M.E. Zion Church, 320 Hayden Station Road and will end at
the Riverside Cemetery on East Street, a site where a number
of African American soldiers from the Connecticut 29th and
31st colored regiments and other civil war units are buried.
The run is approximately 3.9 miles and a bus will follow the
runners. A Freedom Trail T-shirt will be given to all runners and
a country style breakfast will be served at the church for event
participants after the run. Please bring a non-perishable food

September 17: Windsor Art Center Exhibition: Reflections
of Time: Celebrating 50 Years of Artmaking by Stanwyck E.
Cromwell begins today with an opening reception from 5:00 PM

early days in his native Guyana to the present will continue to

September 17: Look for Windsor Historical Society’s Photo
Booth at the Northwest Park Country Fair from 10:00 AM
to 4:00 PM. Fair goers are encouraged to stop by the Society’s
booth and try out our life-size historic photos with head cut-outs.
Participate in a seven-question trivia contest with a chance to win
a tote bag and one-year family membership to the Society.
September 17: The Friends of Northwest Park present the 34th
Annual Country Fair from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at 145 Lang
Road in Windsor. Come enjoy some good old fashioned fun for
the entire family including entertainment, hay rides, pony rides
and games galore. Decorate a pumpkin or build a scarecrow.
Take a riding tour of the park. Enter the crafts, flower and kitchen
and garden competitions. Entertainment will be provided by the
W.H.S. Gospel Choir, strolling minstrels and the 94th U.S. Army
Rock Band. Visit the food court for a variety of items presented
by local civic organizations. New this year will be a silent auction,
and the proceeds will be dedicated to the upgrade and expansion
of the sugar shack. There will be many demonstrations by
local organizations andstudents as well as the popular “Child
Identification Program” CTChip. $3.00 per person or $8.00

September 18: Bring out the very best in your family pet at
Dog Training Class Level 1. Classes begin today from 9:30
AM to 10:30 AM at the L.P. Wilson Community Center and will
end on October 23. Activities will include leash manners, sit, stay,
heel, come, drop it, and more. Learn how to communicate in way
that makes sense to your dog. Group classes are not appropriate
for dogs with aggression issues. $90.00 for Windsor residents

September 18: Bring out the very best in your family pet at
Dog Training Class Level 2 today from 10:35 AM to 11:35

23. Any dog completing a beginner class or has had basic training
may sign up for level 2 class to learn shill such as getting off
leash reliability, advancing basic commands, like sitting and
down from a distance, coming to heel position while moving,
etc. Group classes are not appropriate for dogs with aggression

September 20: Join the Windsor Junior Woman’s Club, a local nonprofit organization comprised of women over the age of 18, working
together to support and improve the Windsor Community. Fundraisers for
local charities and social events for having fun, that’s what we’re about.
Join us for our first meeting of the 2016 -2017 club year at Union Street
Tavern! Social time begins at 7:00 PM and is followed by the business

September 20: Guide Training Starts at Windsor Historical
Society from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Are you a people person who
loves history? Would you like to give tours to adults and/or school
children? Learn more about Windsor Historical Society and Windsor’s long
and fascinating history on three consecutive Tuesday mornings. For more

September 20: The Windsor Public Library will be screening
performances from Lincoln Center this fall. This month our screening
will be Sinatra: A Voice for a Century from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.
The New York Philharmonic celebrates the legacy of Frank Sinatra in
an all-star concert hosted by Seth MacFarlane, with performances by
Christina Aguilera, Chris Botti, Fantasia, Sutton Foster, Kyle Dean Massey,
Bernadette Peters, Billy Porter and Sting. These screenings will be the

September 20: The Mercy Gallery in the Richmond Art Center at the
Loomis Chaffee School will exhibit the work of photographer
Hank Paper through October 26. An opening reception will be held on
September 20, from 6:45 PM to 8:45 PM. The public is invited to attend
and admission is free of charge. The Mercy Gallery is open Monday
through Friday 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Tuesday and Thursday evenings

Austin. Cindy will discuss her new book Cinders: Stories of an InnerCity Survivor. Cinders is a searing coming-of-age story about the
struggles of urban children being locked out of the American dream,
about what it means to be a poor black child in an affluent white world.

September 23: The 12th Annual Ray of Hope Gala to benefit Mary’s
Place, A Center for Grieving Children and Families is today from 6:30

Ryan Deneen, Senior Programmer/Transportation Coordinator
The genuinely sweet coming of age baseball story, The Sandlot, is a homerun in Ryan
Deneen’s book, and his favorite movie of all time. Deneen is Windsor’s Senior Transportation
Coordinator and plays a critical role in assisting Windsor residents with transportation
both in and out of town.
Deneen played baseball and soccer at Windsor High School. He never made it to the
major leagues, his dream as a kid, but Ryan remains a huge fan of baseball, fishing
and watching all sports. Simply strike up a conversation with him and his love of
New England sport teams comes shining through.
After earning a degree in Sports and Leisure Management at Eastern Connecticut
State University, Deneen came back to Windsor and began his career with the Town
of Windsor as an intern and then part-time employee in the recreation department.
In 2013 he became the full-time transportation director.
So, how did a young, sports enthusiast, chili-cheese dog lover and self-proclaimed
cheeseburger junkie end up coordinating more than 26,000 rides each year for Windsor’s
elderly, disabled or Caring Connection clients to medical, shopping and special events?
“Windsor is my hometown,” Deneen responded with pride. “I experienced so many wonderful things
this town has to offer such as little league, youth services camp, swim lessons, the Shad Derby, climbing on fire trucks and more.
Now it’s time for me to provide service from the other side, and that is very special to me.”

Park’s Mushroom ID for Beginners, join a foraging family who hunt,
photograph, identify, and eat the fungi in New England. The three
foragers are members of the CT Valley Mycological Society, Connecticut–
Westchester Mycological Association and the North American Mycological
Association. This program will dispel myths, teach how to safely identify
mushrooms, and include a guided walk after the classroom portion.

October 17: The Figure in Terracotta classes with Award Winning
Sculptor, LeaAnn Cogswell will begin today from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM

this time-honored material. You will hone your powers of observation and
knowledge of the human figure through 15 hours with the live model.
The sculpture will then be hollowed-out in preparation for firing. This
terracotta is a water-based clay that has a beautiful finish when fired, but
can also be finished, using various methods. Tuition for sculpture classes:
$265.00. Model fees are divided among students. Clay is approximately

Windsor’s 2016 Leaf Collection
Program Starts on Monday October 24
Windsor’s 2016 leaf collection program will begin on Monday October
24 and will end on Friday December 16. During this eight-week period
your leaves will be picked up on the same day as your trash pick-up.
Residents must place their leaves at the curb in 30 to 40 gallon paper
leaf bags. Leaves may also be placed in similar-sized containers that
are labeled with a “Leaves Only” sticker that can be easily identified
by the driver (i.e., sticker facing the road). Residents can obtain these
stickers at Windsor Town Hall or the Windsor Transfer Station (formerly
known as the Landfill).
In Windsor, the transfer station accepts residents’ leaves at no charge
and uses them to produce compost. Leaves must be clean and must not
contain other items that will compromise the quality of the mulch that
will be created. These items include grass clippings, branches, or other
items.
If you choose to self-haul your leaves to the transfer station, there is
no charge during this period for dropping off clean loads of leaves (no
contaminates or plastic bags).
The transfer station accepts leaves Monday and Friday 8:00 AM to
2:45 PM, Tuesday and Wednesday 10:00 AM to 2:45 PM, Saturday
8:00 AM to 3:45 PM. The Windsor Transfer Station is closed on
Thursday and Sunday. It is located at 500 Huckleberry Road in Windsor.

Winter parking rules.
They’re designed to keep everyone safe this winter.
November 15 to April 15: No parking on Windsor streets between
1:00 AM and 6:00 AM. No parking on any street during a snow or
ice storm that has been in progress for one hour or more. Also, don’t
leave your vehicle on the street in such a position that it impedes
snowplowing operations or the free flow of traffic.
When the snow arrives this year, remember to keep outside exits, walks
and stairs free of snow and ice. Don’t forget there is a town ordinance
that requires all property owners to clear snow from the sidewalk (and
fire hydrants if there is one on your property) within 12 hours after a
storm.
It’s all common sense but it’s also the law.

Groceries to Go
This program provides supplementary food items and
educational materials to clients 60 and older every other Friday
from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM in the Senior Center. Clients in
this program will choose from a variety of easy to prepare and
nutritious food choices. This program is funded in part by the
Older Americans Act through the North Central Area Agency on
Aging, Windsor Social Services and the Windsor Food and Fuel

Many school children receive free or reduced meals during the
school week at their schools. These same children and families
may need assistance during the weekends. The Weekend
Wheels program distributes supplementary food to children in
need in Windsor through the elementary schools. Children from
eligible families will receive a backpack filled with nutritious
foods each Friday to bring home for the weekend. See program

assistance, the Windsorland-Indoor playscape and more. Transportation

League is seeking Volunteer
coaches
We are currently in need of coaches, both beginner and
experienced, for our recreational league. All volunteers must
fill out a criminal background check consent form along with
a coaches packet. Upon receipt of your registration form,
the WIBL Director will contact you regarding a mandatory
coaches meeting. The league takes place from January through
March with clinics in December. If you’re not sure about
head coaching a team, assistant coaching can be arranged.

St. Paul’s Boys Choir at Sacred Heart Church in
Springfield. The choir has performed with the BSO, the
Vienna Boys Choir and the Harvard Glee Club, to name

Chicken Florentine or Mt. Tom Sirloin. All meals served

Out-of-Town Medical Transportation (to towns surrounding Windsor)
Medical transportation to surrounding towns is available Monday through Friday to resident seniors age 60 or more and
adults who are receiving Social Security Disability benefits. Call the Senior Center between the hours of 9:00 AM and
3:00 PM at 860-285-1992, at least seven days in advance of your scheduled appointment. Wheelchair transportation for
medical appointments is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays only and is limited to Hartford, Bloomfield
and the east side of West Hartford, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM. If you need to cancel your ride, please
call 860-285-1992 as soon as possible. Please note that enrollment in the Windsor Senior Transportation (Dial-a-Ride)

Senior Fitness Center
The Fitness Center for Windsor residents age 55 years or more
is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM and
until 7:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturday hours are
from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. State of the art exercise equipment
and weights are available. Free orientation provided by our
qualified fitness instructor. Fitness membership fees are:

Windsor Senior Transportation
(Dial-a-Ride), In-Town Rides
Transportation to locations around town is provided for
medical appointments, shopping, banking, the Windsor
Senior Center and more by Windsor Senior Transportation
(Dial-A-Ride program), Monday through Friday from
8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Windsor seniors age 60 or more,
and adults who are receiving Social Security Disability
benefits, are eligible to utilize this service once enrolled.
Call 860-285 1846, no later than noon, two business
days in advance. Listen to the instructions for information
needed and leave your message on the answering
machine. The driver will call you between 7:30 AM and
8:00 AM the morning of the ride to give you a pick up
time. You may also sign up for a ride while at the Senior
Center. If you need to cancel a ride, please call 860-2851996 as soon as possible. Visit our website for complete

Bingo: Daytime games are played every Monday and Friday
from 1:00 PM to 2:45 PM. This is a popular activity but there’s
always room for one more at the Senior Center. Arrive by 12:45 to
purchase your game cards. Evening Bingo parties are planned every
third Wednesday of the month. See Windsor Seniors’ Newsletter
for more information.
Adult Coloring Group: Coloring pages for adults are extremely
therapeutic and can help generate wellness, quietness and
mindfulness. Meets every Thursday. All supplies provided. Free. .
Bowling: The Windsor Sportsters’ bowling league meets every
Monday beginning September 12 from 10:00 AM to noon at the
Bradley Bowl. Come enjoy lots of good fellowship and fun. This is
a non-competitive, co-ed league which you can join anytime. No

Crafty Fingers: For those who like to knit, crochet or sew, this

Center.
Cribbage: Easy to learn and fun to play, this centuries-old popular
card game is played every Wednesday at 9:00 AM. Come early if
you need some instruction. New players can join anytime. Free.
Freestyle Dancing: Dance your cares away every second
Wednesday of the month from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM to selections
of swing, foxtrot, waltz, tango, doo-wop, rock, samba, rumba, line
dancing and more. All requests granted. Free.
French Club: “Parlons Francais!” A club for those who want to
brush up on their conversational French. Meetings are held the first
and third Fridays of each month from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Free.
Golden Fellowship Club meets from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the
Senior Center on the third Wednesday of each month. We feature
a short business meeting followed by entertainment, raffle, and
free refreshments, coffee or tea and social time. We also offer
lunch and show trips each month and occasional overnight trips.
Informational flyers for our trips are located in the Windsor Senior
Center. Everyone age 55+ is welcome to join. $5.00 per year. You

Grocery Shopping within Windsor: Transportation to Geissler’s
is offered on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. Each
Friday morning, we transport to Price-Rite and other shops in the
Windsor Shopping Center. Shopping begins at approximately 9:00
AM and you will have one hour of shopping time at Geissler’s and
two hours at the Windsor Shopping Center. Call 860-285-1846
by noon at least two business days prior to the trip. Enrollment
in the Windsor Senior Transportation program is required prior to
scheduling a ride.
Hiking Club: New! Join the Happy Hikers Hiking Club. Call or
visit the Senior Center for details and a schedule of seasonal
destinations. Free.
Line Dancing: You won’t need a partner or any experience to join
the line dancers from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM on Fridays at the Senior
Center. Great camaraderie and aerobic benefits. New participants
always welcome. Call 860-688-4860 for information. No class
11/25. Free.
MahJongg: Join this great group and start a new hobby.
Beginners are always welcome. Games are played every Monday
and Thursday from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM in the Senior Center
lounge. Free.
Mall Trips: On the first Tuesday of every month, the Dial-A-Ride
bus takes seniors to Enfield Mall and on the second Tuesday of
every month, the bus goes to the Buckland Mall in Manchester.
The bus will begin pickups in Windsor at approximately 10:00 AM
and will drop you off at the mall for shopping from 11:00 AM to
1:00 PM. Call 860-285-1846 by noon, two business days prior to
the trip. Enrollment in the Windsor Senior Transportation program
is required prior to scheduling a ride or receiving transportation.
Movie of the Month: Join us in the Senior Center Lounge for
the Movie of the Month from 12:45 PM to 3:00 PM every third
Tuesday of the month. Free popcorn; and soda for $1.00. See
Windsor Seniors’ Newsletter for movie selections. Transportation

Multi-Cultural Dance Group: Dance with instructor Josie to
learn basics of all types of dance movements including Hula and
Polynesian, as well as Hawaiian words. It’s a fun way to exercise
every Friday from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. All are welcome including
those with walkers and wheelchairs. Moves can be done while

Pickleball: Pickleball is similar to tennis, played on a badminton
sized court with lowered nets, using paddles similar to ping pong
paddles and a plastic ball. Come join the teams every Mondays

Fridays 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the Senior Center gym. Free. Call

Progressive Whist: Games begin on September 7 and
are held on the first Wednesday of every month from 12:45
PM to 3:45 PM at the Windsor Senior Center. There will be
prizes for high scorers. Come early if you are new to Whist

Tap Dancing: Held every Thursday from 1:00 PM to
3:00 PM. Join a group of men and women who enjoy tap
dancing. Work on routines and learn the steps as you go.
This is great fun and wonderful exercise that keeps the
mind and body active. Free.
Quilting: Join the First Towne Quilters, and share some
friendship and stitching. Bring your own projects or stop
by to get ideas and help with a new project. We meet the
second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 12:30
PM to 2:30 PM. Join us anytime. Free.
Walking Club: Join the seasonal Jolly Jaunters Walking
Club every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00 AM for half-hour
walks to various spots in Windsor. 960-285-1992 for a

The ROLEO Club (Retired Old Ladies Eating Out)
meets on the third Friday each month at Friendly’s on Route
75 in Windsor Locks from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The club
offers women age 55 or older an opportunity to meet and
chat about a variety of topics. Newcomers are welcome to
join at any time. Cost is determined by what you order.
The ROMEO Gathering (Retired Old Men Eating Out)
meets at a local Windsor restaurant from 8:00 AM to 9:00
AM on the second Friday of each month. This breakfast club
gives a chance to men age 55 or older to meet and enjoy
each other’s company. This is a welcoming group. Cost is
determined by what you order. Please call 860-285-1992

Setback: The card players all gather in the Senior Center
every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 PM to 2:45 PM to
play setback. New participants always welcome. Instruction
provided if needed. Free.
Shopping Trips: Every Wednesday, our bus alternates
transportation for seniors to Target and Stop & Shop in
Windsor or to Wal-Mart and Big Y in East Windsor. The
bus will begin pickups at noon and you will have two
hours of shopping time. Call 860-285 1846 by noon, at
least two business days before the trip. Enrollment in the
Windsor Senior Transportation program is required prior to
scheduling a ride.
Wii Bowling: We meet every Wednesday at 1:00 PM to
“bowl” using the Nintendo® Wii™. Any senior can play
and you don’t need to have athletic ability, just enthusiasm.
If you don’t know how to play, come a little early and we’ll
show you how.
Windsor Trail Riders: For seniors who enjoy bicycle riding
and good company. We ride on multi-purpose trails in
Connecticut and lower Massachusetts every Tuesday from
April through October and welcome riders of all skill levels,
provided they are wearing helmets. Free. 860-219-9193.
WOW (Watch Our Weight): Meets every Wednesday
from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Senior Center. Gain
support and information to help take off weight and keep
it off while enjoying some new friendships. New members

The Windsor Football Alumni game is one game
that you don’t want to miss.
On Thanksgiving day for the past 11 years, a group of former Windsor High School graduates have met to play a
special football game at Jack O’Brien Stadium.
As many know, Windsor has had five players make it to the National Football League in the last 10 years, including two Warriors
advancing as far the Super Bowl. There are also numerous alumni in college in nearly every division of college football (and a successful
college baseball player) who return for the Thanksgiving morning game.
Joining these athletes for the big game there are numerous veterans, active duty military, law enforcement, firemen, EMT and former
coaches and players, to say nothing of the WHS alumni who are attorneys, nurses, information technology professionals, business
owners and photographers, videographers, DJs, and music producers.
Patrick Daly, together with his brother Andrew and father Brian, organized the games. “We first started the Football Alumni game in
2005 as a way to reunite with former teammates,” Patrick Daly said. “Thanksgiving fit the bill as it also gave us access to our old field.
As the years passed and the event grew, the increased attendance provided us the opportunity to cover our expenses and support our
Alumni Scholarship.”
A $500 Windsor Football Alumni Scholarship is given via the high school guidance department to a graduating senior from the football
program who showed excellence in the classroom and leadership on and off the field. To date, $3,500 has been awarded to Windsor
High graduating seniors.
For many, Thanksgiving means football, so this year, as you prepare that special Thanksgiving dinner, know that over at Windsor High
there’s something really special taking place on the gridiron by players of the past, reuniting, having fun and giving back to the young
men of Windsor.
In commemoration of the 15th anniversary of
9/11, the Town of Windsor will host a “Walk of
Light” community remembrance ceremony on
the historic Windsor Town Green at 7:00 PM on
Sunday, September 11, 2016.
Approximately 3,000 paper luminary bags, one for each
individual who lost their life on September 11, 2001,
will line the sidewalks of the green. Each luminary bag
has been inscribed with the name of a person who
perished on 9/11 and has been decorated by Windsor
students and residents. The bags will be illuminated with
glowsticks at dusk and a brief remembrance ceremony
will take place.
Following the ceremony, those in attendance are free
to stroll the town green until 9:00 PM to view the bags
and reflect on the events of 9/11 in their own way.
This is a free event, open to the public, produced by the
Town of Windsor.
