IITK 90 Yearbook
Celebrating 25 years of the batch of
1986-1990
Director’s Message
Dear Batch of 1986-1990/91,
It is my pleasure to welcome you all to IIT Kanpur on the 25th anniversary of your graduation.
Since graduation, you have made significant progress in your professional career and made
us proud of your achievements. Your accomplishments are an inspiration for current and future
students of IIT Kanpur. I am thankful to IITK Alumni Association who has kept us informed about
your contributions and maintained active link between us.
While some of you might have visited IITK in recent years, the rest may be returning to this
campus after many years. Regardless of the frequency of your contact with IITK, I am inclined to
believe that your bond with your alma mater has remained and will remain as strong and alive
as ever.
I am sure that you will have a great time on campus during your Silver Jubilee celebration.
Please enjoy your stay, keep in touch, and make bigger strides in your career and life to make
your alma mater more proud.
Sincerely,
Indranil Manna
Director, IIT Kanpur
Dec 27, 2014 A word from a friend
Dear Batchmate,
I am delighted to present to you the IITK 90 yearbook. The objective of this book is two-fold. The first
is to take you back in time to relive fond memories as you browse through it. Second is to get you
to call or email a batchmate that you have not communicated with in years.
The effort to put the book together started in June 2014. While working on it, I admit that I drew
a lot of “inspiration” from the IITK89 yearbook (old habits die hard ). The alumni association had
sparse and often outdated information on about 262 roll numbers. We requested data and
photos from all batchmates. Approximately 90 responded with detailed information. We tried our
best to maintain the accuracy of the contents of the book. However, if you still see some see
errors/inconsistencies, please accept my sincere apologies.
Kartikeya Mishra, Navpreet Singh and Pravin Bhagwat were a great help in making this book happen.
Thanks to Milind Hambarde ([email protected]) who designed the layout of the book.
I hope you enjoy the yearbook.

Destiny
Is everything predestined?
I wish to briefly describe incidents of my life which will force you to think about it:
After graduating from IIT, I was travelling across India spending time with my relatives while mentally preparing myself for move to the US for my
MS. In July I was in Allahabad staying with my mausaji, where I had the chance to meet a friend of his Mr. Rajan who was an employee with the
Indian Railways. I was meeting him for the first time, so after our introduction, I was told that Mr. Rajan had the ability to predict one’s future by
just looking at a person. While we were having small talks, Mr. Rajan suddenly said that he had a “flash” and pronounced that I will not be going
to the US for my Master’s but will start my business in Kanpur. I laughed at him and said I have a fellowship from University of Minnesota & have
already received my I20 etc.. He simply responded by saying “well this is what I see”. Quite a few of you already know that this is what actually
happened.
In 1984 I had the good fortune of meeting Mr. K D Tripathi who used to sit in “Kanpur Hotel”, Birhana Road. He was a palmist by profession. He
took the hand print of both my hands by smearing black ink on them and then asked me a few dates related to my past, which he said were for
correlation & time correction. After a week he gave a hand written booklet of about 10 pages which he called “Jivan Chakra” for the life span.
Out of the numerous things he wrote which have unfolded to be true to quite an extent, I will mention 2 which are quite striking.
1. He wrote my marriage date as 17.11.92, I got married on 07.11.92. Taking in account it was written 8 years ago I think it is fairly accurate.
2. Earning in foreign currency from 2005 onwards: The businesses I was doing had no potential for export so there was no possibility of any
earning in foreign currency. In January 2005 a friend of mine who is a doctor in UK asked me if I would be interested in doing some Medical
transcription for him, we started with it and the foreign currency earnings started, then of course we moved to an engineering KPO but that’s
another story.
Are we simply characters playing our part in a stage play as Shakespeare said “All the world’s a stage, and all the men
and women merely players…”

Memorable IITK Moments: I still remember the incident in 1st year when, during a power cut, I
put on a gorilla mask and went about scaring my wing mates. DPC would certainly recollect the
incident. He was studying next to window in Hall 2, B Bot and I rose slowly from below the window
just behind the candle kept on window sill. DPC rose from seat, took a few step backwards and then
charged at me with a broom in his hand. I ran away to save myself from a thrashing.

Life Lesson: Approach life with an open mind. Adapt and be flexible. Always trust first and
give people the benefit of doubt - most people mean well and try hard. And remember
nothing is as important as putting ‘life’ (whatever that means to you) in life.

The Survival Kit
(Excerpts from the Book ‘There is Life after Cancer’ by Kartikeya Misra)
Cancer today is more widespread than ever before; there are cancer patients everywhere – yet there is
still not much awareness about the fact that it is no more the same lethal disease it used to be In fact,
for many, it is still a stigma – people refuse to talk about it; they try to conceal if they or their dear ones
are afflicted by it, as if it is shameful and deplorable; as if they are to blame for it..
My story may inspire others to give their best in their own struggle – whether against cancer or any
other seemingly insurmountable medical or worldly challenge. My book may help cancer patients and
their loved ones to fight this disease with a greater sense of conviction that cancer is curable.
It really helps to be passionate about whatever you do. A passionate person can defy all odds; he/she
can overcome all obstacles…..
Life is full of miracles….It is just that we are too busy to observe them…..However, if we stop even for a moment and observe intently, a beautiful world
of everlasting miracles will unfold right in front of us.
..positive attitude…can see you through any challenge, howsoever insurmountable it may appear, including the ‘incurable’ disease called cancer. Life is
worth living – let us resolve to live our lives fully and completely till we actually die.
…..the most determined people die too….there is nothing shameful about death….we will all die one day….the ones who decide to pursue their existence with a positive attitude will not ‘die’ again and again in the fear of death before they actually meet their end.
…..no one who does enough to impact the lives of others around him/her ever dies – he/she continues to live in their memories forever.
Life is a gift from God. We live till He so ordains; we breathe till He desires. What is important is that we live fully and completely till we are not actually dead; whatever the circumstances that afflict us.
You may or may not believe in God. If you do, pray for His mercy, especially in times of crisis. Nothing is beyond Him; your faith and prayers can move
mountains. Even if you do not believe in Him, it is o.k. - He will still take care of you.
It is the attitude that counts. It is the outlook that matters. If you think you can, you most certainly will. The power of attitude is enormous; if you have
attitude, the sky is the limit for you. Remember: It is not over till it is finally over.
Kartikeya Mishra – 86108
Yaadein – Tab aur Ab
It is with nostalgia that I dive into the memories of some of my best days in life - my life at IITK
I wasn’t clear on why I wanted to come to IIT (or IITK) after 12th. Someone had pointed out at school that engineering
is one of the better-paying options and JEE is the best among them. So, I appeared in JEE. The initial euphoria of
having ‘cracked’ it soon came to a halt, when interactions with seniors began in earnest. Having done very well at
school,
I had assumed that 4 years will be a cake-walk. Little did I know that this was just one step in the hard work,
dedication and later application of knowledge.
I was learning new terms - Chaap diya, Tel ho gaya, Kholu, Bakait, Hawa (AIR), Arbit, RG, Fundu. New friendships were
taking place – in the hostel-wing, labs, tutorial-sections and other extra-curricular activities on the campus.
I was going to the library to study subjects, preparing for exams – all in the cool and comfortable environs. It took
sometime to get adjusted to the new life.
The set of friends was increasing, as we moved to various optional courses, and onto participating in different extra-curricular activities.
Life appeared to flow smoothly, except for frequent academic shocks (0 in quizzes, lower grades in courses etc.) – I was contented.
As I grew more confident, I volunteered to work in the Control-Room during the Culfest in 1988. I also tried running for a students’
representative position for our batch in the Students’ Gymkhana elections unsuccessfully. Later, I took up the responsibility of heading
the control-room in Culfest ’89. I remember those stickers which proudly announced ‘I was there – Culfest 89’.
Those wing-discussions, room-chats and leisurely walks on the campus roads were special. I worked with juniors in a lot of activities and
most of them are still friends with me.
What amazes me is that whenever we (IITK90 group) meet up in any reunion, we just pick up the thread from where we left in 1990. It doesn’t
matter whether we knew each other very well or fleetingly during our IIT days. Such is the bond of friendship and togetherness that
I see as a major ‘take-away’.
It has been a pleasure to be a part of this dynamic and versatile group (IITK90) – and has been a true privilege. Spread happiness!! Cheers!!!

Coincidence
My father is also an IITian who graduated from IIT Kharagpur in
1963, making me a second generation IITian. He was among
the first students from the state of Bihar into the IIT.
More interestingly, father of my batch-mate Manish Jhawar
also graduated from IIT Kharagpur the same year. Thus the two
batch-mates from IIT Kharagpur have their sons as batch-mates
in IIT Kanpur - probably a unique coincidence.

My two cents
Rajeev Thakur – 86197
•
Manish Verma threw an anda at Subhojit Kar (AIR 125) at 2 AM in the morning, while he was studying under the table lamp. He was psyched during his
entire stay in IIT after this event. So were Ram Sajeewan & Arunesh Kumar,
when Varun Kapoor & Avaneesh Dube tried to scare them by knocking at their
window on a winter night with ghost masks.
•
I am still not in terms with how Puneet Ranjan got 128 AIR.
•
Ethyl and Methyl were amongst the most funny and popular nicknames.
•
I preserved for a long time after graduation the pen which GMS had bor
rowed from me in the library.
•
First academic shock was in M101 during first mid-sem, when I scored 20 out
of 150. Deepak Gupta scored full marks.
•
My roommate Inder scored 9.1 in the first sem. I was almost 2 points below
him.
•
Inder had put the label on our door – “Beware, this room is occupied by a sex
maniac”. Imagine my embarrassment when my father made an unannounced
visit once.
•
Whenever I see the Infinity symbol ( ), I recall Ashwini Kumar’s M101 class
and the psi symbol (ψ)always reminds me of the tantric episode in the Chem01
class.
•
I used to relish playing carom with Anand Barry (’83 batch) & loved his lifestyle.
•
Kisine Jaideep Arora ko mota keh diya. He became obsessed and started
running in the campus.
•
I used to scoff at the Pran guide referred by our neighbour Anurag
Srivastava (Civil Engg) for preparing for Civil services. He topped the UPSC exam
using the guide.
• After JEE results, I was in a stage of bliss and felt that I had mukti from studies and exams.
My dream crashed on Day 0 and I came to
terms with reality with English exam in L-7.
• I returned to Hall 3, was enroute caught by
Rajesh Khanna (’85 batch), who took me to
his room and asked me to search for 5 types
of ants. When I failed, he gave me a Maths
problem
o Given x^2 = x + x+ x….. x times
o Differentiate both sides
o You get, 2x = x; or 2 = 1,
which is not logical. Please explain. When I could not provide the answer, I was
actually made to sit on the top of the cupboard.

Talking about ragging, nothing beats Sirshendu De (now IITKGP professor and
recipient of the prestigious Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar prize). He took a freshie
to his room, asked him to wear his lungi and go to sleep in his cot for 3 hours.
Mr. De was a chain smoker; he could do anything for a pack of fag. I recall losing
a bet with him wherein he agreed to strip in ShopC for a packet of Goldflake.
He actually stripped - Prof. Kunzru’s family was in the vicinity.
During Culfest ’88, there were a stream of girls arriving on campus. Our man,
Uday Shankar had joined Transport and was responsible to escort the visitors
to the campus. Enroute, he was offered a cigarette. Jisne sutte ko jindagi bhar
haath nahin lagaya tha, woh cigarette peene laga. It is another matter that he
was smoking from the non-filter end.
Some people seemed to wear the same clothes throughout the year – Chako
wore brown sweater and blue jeans, Kuldip Singh a yellow-black cheque shirt.
I recall travelling by BEST bus in Mumbai in the early 90’s and seeing this yellowblack cheque shirt wearing person from a distance in the Kalina area; he was
Kuldip.

1) Just before ‘Nostalgia’, we had a bucket full of liquor, a cocktail of (gin, rum, whiskey....).
No body kept count of intake. Do not remember much of what happened in the programme

2) First Flight Lab early in the morning remember being towed by one of the two piston engine
aircraft. Suddenly, at around 9000 ft Captain disengaged our glider in the tow as the piper
in the front started to smoke. Can’t forget the freaky descent the glider made from that height.
3) Scoring F in Dr.K.N.Sharma’s Sociology course.”

My stuff
Sandeep Trivedi – 86224
1986 till date - beginning of a journey that will probably never end. What I started in the summer of 1986 as
86224 still goes on. I had some great beginnings upon my arrival at IITK. My roommate was Ajay Singh and
my next door neighbor - Anand Barry. Looking back it was a great start for my little brain that went through a
major expansion in those years.
I don’t know why I took Physics but the decision to join IITK did work out. Within the first week, Ajay Singh had
found a snake in his wardrobe and blamed it on me for leaving the door open. Most of the seniors knew me as
the freshie who smoked and walked around in a swimming trunk. I thought I was really smart. But 5 years later,
neither did I have the grades nor any GH wali. But I had made friends that will last a lifetime.
By the end of my first year, I had exploded diwali bombs under Jogis bed, on Jimmos glass (breaking it), tried
daru (ended up throwing up all night), learned how to bunk classes, had a few Fs and made a few hundred
friends. I had figured out that mess food was crap, that Lala rocked, that CPA was for losers and finally, that
it doesn’t matter how much you study, you will never get an A. Somehow, I dragged my way to the fourth
semester only to be hit by Esc 207 and Esc 204. Thanks to Sony, we all passed the Computer course, but 207
was a nightmare. Tried it again in the
following summer and flunked. Our section A4 probably had the lowest CPI and more than half the section
would copy from Charu to pass any course.
Time in IITK flied; between teen patti, sutta, roof top daru parties and tension to not get a F, my tiny brain kept busy. Then, in 3rd year, I had to do
Quantum Mechanics, another course which I had to take 3 times before the instructors decided to let me go with a D. Somehow, I managed my way to
the final year for our MSc project in Laser. I got a D and my CPI went south. By that time, my academic life was at the peak of nowhere. In one of my
final exams, I saw the question paper, found out that I knew nothing and told the instructor that I was having a nervous breakdown. I ended up in the
Health Center for a few days with the entire Physics faculty coming to meet me. Sometime during 1990s, I was finally able to graduate after ’n’ years at
IITK. I received my degree from a clerk in the Dean’s office; I remember little else as I was stoned. If today I was to repeat those years, I think I will do it
the same way. I will surely need Charu and Duaji to help me graduate though.
Third year happened to be the most colorful, in fact. One day Katto came to my room around noon and asked me to accompany him to Pilani. I was
wearing shorts and t-shirt and had 50 paise in cash. I went to Pilani like that with the IITK team, enjoyed the Games festival, the food at Pilani mess
and returned on the bus roof with Rs. 1.25 in my pocket. A few weeks later, the Physics department people were going to Delhi for some astrophysics
workshop. I boarded the train with them, got down at the station and went to attend LSR Cultural Festival (Tarang). Those 4 days were probably the
most colorful days of my life. I took many more trips to Nepal, Nainital, Khajuraho etc. - all were finalized at the last moment and the memories have
still not faded away.
We all studied for the IIT entrance exam, planning to study. That plan failed miserably, not only for me but for most of us. But we all made great
friends. These few words are just an icing on the cake of what happened in those years. What actually happened there may take many years to
be documented, a lot of which may even be unpublishable – only to remain in the hearts of those who witnessed it.

Memorable IITK Moments: Magazine related activities- memories of the days
spent on Outreach in Hall-2, then The Presidential Newsletter, later Spark and
finally The Campus Magazine will always be cherished. In the final year,
organizing Gym-Lec-Disc - There were several cerebral lectures - who would
have thought Usha Uthup would enthrall the audience along with
Kuldip Nayar and Dr.PRK Rao and the gentleman from Kanpur.
Life Lesson:
The best life lesson I have learnt is from my then future wife (in 1994) when we
met for the first time formally - Take it as it goes and never plan too far ahead.
A chemical engineer turned into an IT professional to a professor of computer
science, I have seen most things, yet in the same breath- ain’t seen anything
yet. Man proposes, God disposes and everything happens for a reason.

Life Lesson: One of my colleagues was telling me this great story that during his first ever job interview, the guy interviewing him
said, “I am making sure you’re someone who can work as part of my team, who I can work with ON a team, or work FOR in future.”
Treat everyone with respect. This is a big world and tides do turn. You have to make sure you surround yourself with people who
are with you in good times and in bad times. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

Seven Tweets to Achieve Escape Velocity in Career
I thought I’d write about career journey and its uniqueness. Many of us experience these thoughts “Oh I have hit the ceiling
in my career. I don’t have a future”. “I don’t know what to do and the organization is not helping me in any way..”
Let me give you my 7 tweets. Well, these are not my original ideas. I am fortunate to have heard from some great people and
this is my humble attempt to condense and mix them all to create a magic potion.
Tweet+ 2: Have Sharp focus: It is not ‘doing something’
when millions of thoughts emerge from our minds. Catch
that ‘One Thought’ and convert to action and execution to
achieve “Sharp Focus”. It is hard but not impossible.
But we need to strive with commitment.
Tweet+ 3: Commitment before excellence:
For majority of Human beings, commitment is more important
than excellence. If you have commitment, you will be blessed
with excellence. Only for very few blessed ones Excellence is
nature. Respect them but evaluate which category you are and
be committed.
Tweet+ 1: Think Escape Velocity: To escape
from gravitational pull for increased time
(Not infinite!), rockets need unique fuel. We
need unique Knowledge fuel to escape our
career traps.
Tweet+7: Calm your mind:
Remember Tweet 2 and 3. If a barrage of thoughts
distracts you, there is no sharp focus. There is no
commitment. Find you own way to calm your mind.
There are many ways. Find your own way.
Tweet+ 6: Have Hunger to Learn:
Remember Tweet 1 and Tweet 4. The more knowledge fuel you
acquire the closer you are to achieve escape velocity. The more
you give this fuel to others, the more you get and hence this
magic cycle with help you escape.
Tweet+ 4: Believe in Law of Nature:
This is THE ONLY CONSTANT. Applies to all forces
including our forces; Not just the Newton’ third law
to lifeless masses. If you share knowledge, wealth &
positive thoughts, you are certain to get from cosmos
at a later time. Never question this.
Tweet+ 5: Respect everyone and everything:
Respect nature, animals and every other human being. Never
hurt others feelings and actions. Never compare, never complain.
Please think of “Tweet 4”. This is the only sustainable way. The
moment you realize you have hurt others, kindly apologize.
Follow these tweets Go out there and do your best!. Excellence is
certain! Mr. N R Narayana Murthy Chairman Emeritus of Infosys Ltd
said “You should be able to escape the gravitational pull of the past
by constantly adapting and changing engines of growth like a Rocket”.
So it is all about knowing Rocket Science!!

Love Is The Answer
Call me Derek Brown if you like but my dad gave me the name Vakul Goswami. To my mom i was Vakki, to my
wife Vakil Babu, to my granny Vakkal. My English schoolteacher (Fr Rosenfelder) chose to call me Vakhool, my
grandfather Bakul Babu and my friends called me Vakuleshwari Devi, Vacuole, even Gainda and Saand. I am
actually what YOU choose me to be. I am what you perceive of me. I am what you are. To myself I am neither a
nobody nor a somebody. I am just anybody.
What do I share with friends here? It has to be something that has affected me most deeply and is presently
with me. It cannot be something from the future. A good amount of luck and lot of effort by multiple parties gets
us all into this world. We however feel compelled to justify our existence. I am. But Why?
Through a little window in the electromagnetic spectrum, a little of the world is visible to us, in a little time
frame made available to us. To overcome these limitations we use multiple ‘observation posts’, use instruments
working on rays not visible, and pass on our information from generation to generation. Still we know it is
hopelessly insufficient. The only thing we know with certainty when we discover something is that there is much
more to know. Every answer brings forth more questions. Who will answer my questions? Where do I get the
answers from? I think there is just one answer. It is love.
We are children of love seeking love throughout our lives. What is love? To me it is an invisible force that binds (at varying distances in
different cases). We know a little about Coulombic forces, something about gravitational forces, and somewhat about nuclear forces but almost
nothing about love. Yet it affects us all the time. Sometimes its waves are intense, sometimes subtle.
I don’t think it is too far from reality if I say that love does not answer questions but dissolves all of them. It is not a solution (as an answer), it
is a solution (as a dissolving medium). If love is about ignorance it is surely a blissful one.
It is impossible to love oneself; just like a charged particle does not itself attract itself. One can only love others. Others may reciprocate your
love in the process or love others.
What is the essence of love? The essence of love is in losing one’s self. It is in selflessness. Let us remember people like Florence Nightingale
who tended to wounded soldiers in the Crimean war, Sir Nicholas Winston who rescued 669 children from their doomed fate in Nazi death camps in
WW II, and Mother Teresa. These are some of the innumerable examples of people who gave everything they had in the service of humanity.
They have shown us what the essence of love is all about.
In conclusion let me say that all the difficult questions bear a many to one relationship to this single answer. We all know it as Love. Vakul Goswami – 86292
