Friends Aware & Bishop Walsh—
Working Together for the Community
D
uring the past year, Bishop Walsh and Friends Aware have partnered on
projects designed to give back to the community. On several occasions,
students were welcomed at the FAI Life Enrichment Center to work on various
activities. These projects have provided a wonderful educational experience,
as well as forged many new friendships.

Trainee of the Quarter Award Winner
T
yler Wallace is the Trainee of the Quarter Award
winner for 2nd quarter 2010. This award is
presented to an individual within the Vocational
Services program of the Life Enrichment Center,
who has demonstrated significant achievement or
consistent improvement in specific areas of their
lives, based on their strengths, skill sets, character
traits, motivation, and individual challenges.
Tyler entered Friends Aware in June 2008 from an
Allegany County Board of Education Transitioning
Youth Program, then located at Frostburg State
Tyler Wallace
University. Since that time, Tyler has made great
strides in terms of his personal interaction and work skills, achieving and
surpassing goals as established in his Individualized Plan. Tyler’s social
maturation over the past two years has been significant, and he has established many new relationships, both at Friends Aware and in the community.
When on-site in Area 6, Tyler enjoys shredding documents, sorting and quality
control for various ATK contracts, mailing contracts, and attaching handles
to Berry Plastics containers. He is also very involved with Friends Aware’s
“GoGreen” Crusade, and assists with the transportation of recyclable goods
to the Recycling Center. He is an avid reader and visits the Allegany County
Bookmobile during their weekly stops at Friends Aware. Likewise, he enjoys
working on various educational programs on the touch-screen computers.
What Tyler loves most (besides his mother) is fire trucks. He is very scholarly
in this area, and is able to identify all fire companies’ whistles in the county,
as well as the makes, models, and years of many vintage fire trucks.
Tyler is well-known and integrated into the community, where he currently
works two days per week shredding documents for PharmaCare. Tyler loves
his job and has done very well since he began working there in October 2009.
As mentioned previously, he has assumed the very prestigious title of Friends
Aware’s “Recycling Engineer,” frequenting the Recycling Center almost daily
with the paper, cardboard, and plastics thrown out at the LEC. He is also
responsible for collecting aluminum cans from a roster of individuals who
donate, as well checking the recycling cans located at area businesses and
around various recreational/social sites in the community (i.e. Constitution
Park, Downtown Cumberland, Riverside Park, etc.).
As a recipient of this award, Tyler will be recognized in front of his peers,
treated to lunch at the restaurant of his choice, awarded a Friends Aware logo
jacket, and receive an engraved star on the Hall of Fame in the hallway of LEC
Area 6. Congratulations Tyler—You are amazing!
