FROM THE PRESIDENT
H
earty congratulations from all members of
the JDCHR to Dennis Trigg — awarded Order Australia Medal in the Australia Day
Honours. Dennis, together with Alison, has
been a tireless worker for the community. His citation is on page 20.
The year started off with a great display of our cars on Australia
Day, featured on the forecourt of Customs House, with a great view
of the activities on the harbour and the various displays on the Foreshore. See the report and pictures on Pages 12-18. Thank you to all
who came along, there was plenty of interest from the public, many
talking to owners about their Jaguars, with lots of pretty young girls
posing for photos with the cars, especially Leyland‘s beautiful E Type!
There are two displays coming up in March where you can showcase your Jaguar pride and joy to
the public, details on flyers and in Bill‘s Social Report, along with event reports and future outings.
This year the National Rally is in Glen Waverly, Melbourne, and we again have a contingent of
JDCHR members and cars attending. Some are coming on our Coastal Views to Outback Tour,
and others just going straight there. My atlas has again bamboozled me, taking us a week to get
down there, over some newfound off the beaten track roads. We will be spending a night with Helen
McCubbin at Lazy Acres Log Cabins, Lakes Entrance; you will remember Helen with the Magnificent XK150 that won a place in the Concour at our 2006 National Rally held on Foreshore Park.
Helen is also the proud owner of an E Type, so we have some catching up o do.
I first met Helen in August 2001 when Byron & I drove our XJ-SC in the XK120 Commemorative
Run in Recognition of the 1951 Open World Record.
In the early morning of August 2nd, 1951, Les Taylor (driver)
and Rick Rendle (navigator) commenced their epic run from
Darwin to Alice Springs, completing the dash of 954 miles in
only 10 hours 32 minutes. Their effort was rewarded with the
prestigious title of holders of the Open Road World Record
(91.3 mph over dirt road), a record that stood until 1955.
If you are interested in
reading more about this event and see the cars (majority of
XK120‘s of course!) you can look up my web site www.ichiintl.com.au then scroll down and click on Personal Pages, XJSC Round Australia Tour, and the Commemorative Run is
listed in the index.
There were many magnificent cars, with interesting people,
some from as far away as Denmark.
We look forward to seeing everyone at future Club outings, and our Club
meeting, safe and enjoyable driving.

SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT
W
e have had a good start to the year with the Mid Week Run to Stockton, with the morning tea break at King Edward Park. I was unable to
attend but by all reports a good day was had by all, with eight cars at Stockton for
lunch.
Of course Australia Day at the Foreshore is always a fun and jovial day for members. In past
years we normally gather under the trees on the eastern side of the display area, but this year the
organisers had put the children‘s carnival equipment there, with jumping castles and rides, so we
set up camp on the west side of the plaza under the pine trees. This turned out a lot better for us
as there was more room, good shade and we were able to see all the activities with less obstruction.
A good turn out of twenty-two Jaguars on display, and one Landrover—not quite a Jag but a first
cousin. They were a popular attraction for the crowd, with many admirers stopping to ask about
the marque and take photos.
Coming up is the February Mid Week Run to Brooklyn on Thursday 20 February, and on Sunday
March 2 we are going to a display at the ―Morpeth Motorama" at Closebourne House, 363 Morpeth Rd Morpeth. It is one block on the Maitland side of the historic Morpeth shops.
On Saturday 8 March is the Hawks Nest Motorfest. We will be off to an early start so we can beat
the ‗rush‘ into the grounds. It is always an entertaining day with a good variety of vehicles on display, competitions, raffles and lucky door prizes. Last year it was so exciting when Jan Hissey was
lucky enough to win a ‗free wheel alignment.‘
Friday 11 April we set off on the ―Coastal Views to Outback Terrain Tour‖. This will be a memorable tour heading off down the coast to Melbourne for the 45th National Rally and returning through
the ―Outback‖ via Horsham, Broken Hill and Gilgandra. This will be a three week trip and we will
see some amazing sights throughout NSW and Victoria, returning on 3rd May. Details are on
Pages 35-37. This will take a lot of detailed planning, so if you are wanting to come along let Ian
Hissey or myself know ASAP.
If you are not going on the ―Coastal Views to Outback Terrain Tour‖ but are going to the ―National
Rally‖ in Melbourne, please let me know, so we can organise to get together at the Rally.
Later in the year on October 28, some members are going on a cruise to North Queensland and
the Barrier Reef (details on page 29). There is much interest and some have booked already, so if
you have never been on a cruise and would like to join us, come along for the journey. If you have
been but not with company, I can assure you it is so much better when you have a few friends
amongst the other two thousand strangers.
As always, I invite members to take the opportunity to participate in Club events. If possible, acquaint yourself with the route beforehand and bring your mobile phone and/or 2-way radio.

The HUB February 2014
FROM THE EDITOR
S
ome of my time in recent weeks has been spent thinking about the HUB
and its effect on the Club‘s finances, This has been prompted by a trend
away from the HUB‘s previous cost-neutral position within the Club‘s
overall budget. Where revenue from advertising once fully covered the
costs of publishing and distributing the HUB, several aspects have been slowly changing to make
the HUB a net cost to the Club. These include:
 Growing membership numbers. Every current HUB costs about $4 to print and mail out. As
membership grows, the Club pays more.
 The vast majority of members still opt to receive a hard copy HUB in addition to the electronic colour version received by email
 Printing and mailing cost increases
 Declining advertising revenue, with two major prime-space advertisers discontinuing their
participation in recent months
The good news is that the Club‘s finances are geared to accommodate the HUB and its varying
revenues from advertising. But any leads that members can suggest to introduce new advertisers
would always be valued. Likewise, I urge members to again consider whether they really need to
have a hard copy magazine. The emailed e-HUB is in full colour, and provides the ability to print
specific pages such as event flyers or the Club calendar, to take in the car when required.
Still on the subject of the HUB, members would by now be aware that I will be standing down from
the Editor‘s position at the AGM in August this year, as I indicated last August. One member who
had shown some interest in getting involved has told me that travel commitments will prevent that
from happening. However, the suggestion of a ‗shared‘ position was raised. In fact there is absolutely no reason why several people in the Club could not share the responsibility for producing
the HUB each month, or taking it month about. It‘s just a matter of people spending the time with
me, between now and August, to learn the skills required to put it together.
Likewise, the Editor‘s job could be split up to reduce the workload, with one person doing the production and editing, with someone else taking care of collection from the printer, enveloping and
mailing. We just need some volunteers.
With now only six months to go, now‘s the time to get this sorted. Think about it and speak to the
President or myself if you are interested, or if you would like to know more. By August it will be too
late, as I will definitely be standing down.
I must add my congratulations to Dennis Trigg on his OAM on Australia Day. Details are on
Page 20. The unsung hero too, is no doubt Dennis‘ wife Alison, so Congratulations to her as well!
What this reminds me of is the reality, often overlooked, that many members in a Club like ours,
have skills and accomplishments that they don‘t broadcast and about which fellow Club members
know very little. We are no doubt full of hidden talents.
Until next month, happy Jaguaring!

JANUARY MID WEEK RUN
I am indebted to Doug Absalom who sent me his recollections of the January Mid Week Run held
on 16 January 2014, and the accompanying photographs—Editor
T
he Midweek Jag Club Run on Thursday, January 16th saw only four vehicles leave the starting point at Club
Macquarie but there was some controversy. Brian Dixon's early S Type took the
lead with Doug & David Absalom following in
the modern S-type and Tom Shannon bringing up the rear in the Toyota van. However,
the penultimate position was occupied by the
spectacular red & white 1962 Mercedes Benz 220 SE, owned by Peter Dwyer.
Motivated by a number of anti-Marxist remarks, Peter had been determined to bring the Benz
along to add some multiculturalism to the day, and he certainly succeeded. The 220 SE looked
decidedly American for a German - bred car but it certainly turned many heads on the trip through
Warners Bay, Charlestown and Merewether into the rotunda at King Edward Park. There, the
group were joined by Charlie Hankin and Ian in the XK8, and Wendy and Steve Crawford in their
XJ. Despite the warm day, the rotunda valley provided lots of shade for an extended morning tea.
The six-vehicle group then proceeded to Stockton via the beaches and foreshore and Kooragang, and were joined at the General Washington Hotel by Don Anderson and Janet & David
Merryweather for a very enjoyable lunch overlooking the working harbour. The sight of a ship
about a dozen stories high cruising past the window of the lunch room was the kind of spectacle
that could be enjoyed in very few parts of the
world.
Much of the lunchtime conversation centred on marque discrimination and the general consensus
was that multi-marquism was a good thing, since the Jags still showed up well by comparison. I
was a little worried about crossfertilization when the Benz appeared
to be a little too friendly with the Stype but was consoled when told that
the age difference may be a barrier. A
very enjoyable morning concluded at
a little after 2 p.m.

AUSTRALIA DAY 2014
O
ne of the things we in JDCHR do every year, is to mount a display of
fine cars on the forecourt of Customs House, as part of the Newcastle
Foreshore-centred Australia Day festivities. Another thing we do every
year is to annoy taxi drivers who feel that we clutter up their rank at
Civic Station, where we assemble beforehand. They‘re right of course, although
at the early hour involved, the disruption is minor. Nevertheless, there is perhaps
the need to consider alternative meeting locations for next year‘s event.
Twenty two cars is a good
sized fleet, and gaining entry
onto the concourse area just
inside the closed Wharf Rd
roundabout is always logistically difficult, testing our agility
and driving accuracy with the
small timber kerb ramps we
now use. However, we were
Jaguars starting to arrive at Civic Station as
Bill Whitby tries to direct parking (right)
Peter Dwyer and Barry
Price both spotted it
simultaneously (below)
all safely ensconced without any casualties
by 8.30am before any real crowd started to
build. But build it did, later in the morning, as
Newcastle people flocked to the foreshore
to celebrate Australia Day and enjoy the
various activities planned for the day—
speedboat racing, ski racing, cross-harbour
swim, yacht race start, aerobatic display,
flypast by RAAF jets and the famous Catalina ―Felix‖ from HARS in Wollongong.
There was something for everybody.
Our display included no less than 5 XJ6
Series 2‘s (who said they‘re all broken down
in sheds?). We also saw Bill Whitby and
Kelly arrive in Mark Perry‘s XJR100, →

demise of Bill‘s
S Type after an
unfortunate accident. There were
two Mark 2‘s, an
early S Type,
two modern S‘s,
a lone E type and assorted
other Jaguars and a Daimler. Quite a wide mix of
representatives of our marque.
As crowd numbers grew,
the level of interest shown
in our vehicles was very
satisfying. It seems to increase year by year as our
older cars become even
older and more distinctive,
and the average modern
car becomes ever more Above: The old boys’ Union—Phil McLeod, Leyland Rix, Eddie

There were also displays alongside the former tugboat wharf area, by the Newcastle Restored
Vehicle Club and the Central Coast
British Car Club. The latter included
some very tasty stuff, such as new
Jaguar XJ and a Jaguar F Type—are
these top end new Jags cheaper on the
Central Coast?
It was a great day, and what a way to
celebrate Australia Day, even though we
show up in British cars at a time when
the politics of the First Fleet‘s landing is
getting a bit touchy! Thank you to all our
members who participated.

DENNIS TRIGG OAM
hile many members were enjoying Australia Day
on Newcastle Foreshore, member Dennis Trigg,
Alison and their family were enjoying the pride they
shared in Dennis‘s recognition in the Australia Day
Honours list. Our President Ian Hissey reported this
rare circumstance at the Club‘s January meeting.
Reproduced below is the official Citation that lists the remarkable list of Dennis‘s achievements, which led to his fitting recognition. It‘s a wonderful example of
community minded spirit and energy, played out in a very direct and tangible way. You wonder
how Dennis had time for running a business, let alone maintain an interest in Jaguars, and before
that (still?) Rovers.

JAGUAR DESIGN DIRECTOR HONOURED
An award of a different kind was recently reported from the United Kingdom, at the Motorcity Automotive Industry Night (MAIN) Event, but equally pleasing to Jaguar enthusiasts. Below is an
abridged version of the press release issued by Mark Eedle, Brand manager, Jaguar Australia.
Editor
J
aguar Design Director Ian Callum has
this week been named 'Industry Innovator of the Year' at the 2014 Motorcity
Automotive Industry Night (MAIN)
Event Awards. Jaguar was recognised by the
MAIN Event Executive Committee as the ultimate definition of automotive luxury and
praised for its distinct design language, use of
advanced technology and outstanding vehicle
dynamics. The ceremony took place at Orchestra Hall, Detroit, in front of an audience of
over 700 automotive executives, designers
and international media.
Presenting the trophy to Ian, Keith Nagara, Executive Committee Chairman said: "Jaguars are
beautiful vehicles that all generations aspire to own. They epitomise the ultimate in automotive
luxury, desirability and craftsmanship. Ian Callum has led the design revolution at Jaguar that has
helped transform the brand, most recently demonstrated by the launch of the stunning F-TYPE
Coupé. This is a brand that is going from strength to strength."
Ian Callum said: "It is an honour to receive this award. It is with the benefit of having such a great
team around me that we have been able to deliver the cars and designs that define Jaguar today."
Ian Callum has been at the forefront of the transformation of Jaguar's design aesthetic since joining the brand in 1999. Born in Dumfries, Scotland, he studied Industrial Design at the Glasgow
School of Art. Upon graduating, Callum opted to specialise in vehicle design, enrolling at the Royal
College of Art (RCA) on the Automobile Design course, and has since received five honorary doctorates from universities around the world. Callum is responsible for Jaguar design language created over the past decade, which includes the current Jaguar XK, XF, XJ and the recently
launched F-TYPE sports car.
Staged in Detroit on the eve of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), the annual
celebration of automotive excellence allocates four awards across design and industry. Each year
two industry executives whose achievements have made a substantial global impact, leading their
institutions to set new standards of industry innovation, are recognised at the awards. Celebrating
not only established excellence, the next generation of automotive talent is selected by the MAIN
Executive Committee from current design students at Lawrence Technological University.

TATA LOSES MANAGING DIRECTOR
News also from the Jaguar company in the United Kingdom, but on a much sadder note.
Editor
T
ata Motors, India’s biggest carmaker, said
Managing Director Karl Slym died in a fall
from the Shangri-La hotel in Bangkok.
Slym, 51, was staying at the hotel when the
fall occurred, a spokeswoman at the Mumbai-based
company said by telephone yesterday, without elaborating.
The Englishman, who joined Tata Motors in 2012 after
a 17-year stint at General Motors, was the top executive for the carmaker’s operations excluding the Jaguar Land Rover luxury unit.
Slym came to Tata Motors from GM’s Chinese unit
and was working to steer the carmaker through the
biggest slowdown in more than a decade in Asia’s third-biggest economy.
He sought to reposition the failing Nano as a ‘‘second car’’ after buyers shunned the $US2300
compact pitched as an inexpensive alternative to motor scooters.
‘‘Karl was beginning to make long-term changes at Tata Motors,’’ Vikas Sehgal, managing director
for the automotive sector at Rothschild & Sons in London, said in a telephone interview.
‘‘His loss will be felt deeply by Tata Motors.’’
Bangkok police had no immediate comment when contacted by Bloomberg News last night and
said they may release information later today.
Slym had gone to the city to attend a board meeting of Tata Motors Thailand, the carmaker said in
an emailed statement.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, which has forecast the first annual drop in passenger-vehicle sales in more than a decade, said this month the industry was still going through a
rough patch as an economic slowdown damps demand for cars and SUVs.
The nation’s passenger-vehicle sales slid 5.7 per cent in the nine months ended December 31, the
organisation for the country’s carmakers reported January 9.
‘‘Karl was providing strong leadership at a challenging time for the Indian auto industry,’’ Tata
Motors Chairman Cyrus P. Mistry said in the statement.
Net income climbed 71 per cent to 35.4 billion rupees ($566 million) in the three months ended
September 30, beating analyst estimates, as sales at the Jaguar Land Rover unit jumped, outweighing a loss at the automaker’s domestic division.
Sales at Tata Motors’ Indian unit declined 29 per cent in the period.
Slym was the second GM executive to be appointed managing director at Tata Motors.

PAUL HARRIS’S MARK 2
ember Paul Harris recently sent me these photographs of work going on on his Mark
2, ―just to prove that some members do actually work on their cars!‖ (Paul also has a
very nice XJ6 Series 2 that is often seen at Club events.) We look forward to the full
story from Paul, on the restoration of the Mark 2, affectionately known as ―Cherie‖.

THE WONDERS OF TECHNOLOGY
I
have a little Satnav
It sits there in my car
A Satnav is a driver's friend
It tells you where you are
I have a little Satnav
I've had it all my life
It's better than the normal ones
My Satnav is my wife
It gives me full instructions
Especially how to drive
"It's thirty miles an hour", it says
"You're doing thirty five"
It tells me when to stop and start
And when to use the brake
And tells me that it's never ever
Safe to overtake
It tells me when a light is red
And when it goes to green
It seems to know instinctively
Just when to intervene
It lists the vehicles just in front
And all those to the rear
And taking this into account
It specifies my gear.
I'm sure no other driver
Has so helpful a device
For when we leave and lock the car
It still gives its advice
It fills me up with counselling
Each journey's pretty fraught
So why don't I exchange it
And get a quieter sort?
Ah well, you see, it cleans the house,
Makes sure I'm properly fed,
It washes all my shirts and things
And keeps me warm in bed!
Despite all these advantages
And my tendency to scoff,
I only wish that now and then
I could turn the bugger off!
(With thanks to Leyland Rix, and apologies
to all the feminists! - Editor)
W
ith the new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette
Z06 that was introduced this past
week at the Detroit Auto Show, GM
raises the threat level to the bragging
rights of virtually every other supercar
in the world.
And while performance numbers are still
months away,
there
were
plenty of interesting details
released with GM‘s Z06 announcement—like an allnew ‗LT4‘ engine, as well as a new, GM-designed
eight-speed automatic transmission designed for
exactly this application.
That new ‗8L90‘ transmission, designed completely
within GM, by a dedicated team, is a traditional
hydraulic automatic—solenoids, valves, planetary
gearsets and all—but GM says that it provides the
super-quick shifts of dual-clutch boxes, yet with
more smoothness.
The eight-speed automatic is actually quickershifting than the PDK gearbox in the Porsche 911,
GM officials say; and that‘s a transmission that
engineers benchmarked for the project.
Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter pointed to
some tough packaging challenges. There wasn't
any existing dual-clutch gearbox that could take the
torque of the engine and would fit in the space
permitted.
―It's engineered by GM, internally, and many of the
parameters were focused on this car,‖ said Tadge
Juechter, at a pre-show event. ―So it's almost a
custom transmission.‖
Also of note is that the transmission offers up to a
five-percent fuel economy gain over a six-speed
automatic used in the same application.

2014 NATIONAL RALLY & TOUR
I
would like to invite and welcome members and friends of all Jaguar Car Clubs in Australia
and New Zealand to the 2014 National Rally, to be held in the City of Monash in the eastern
suburbs of Melbourne.
Accommodation will be available at the Novotel Glen Waverley, that is located between the
CBD and the Dandenong Ranges - being a short 20-30 minute drive from each. All rooms have
been fully refurbished, so a comfortable stay is assured. Shopping is on the doorstep, as well as
many international restaurants. Adjoining the hotel is Century City Walk complex, that offers Village Cinema, Strike Bowling, and Tabaret-Sports Bar, all located under the same roof. The train
station is located behind the hotel for easy direct access to the city or Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The 2014 National Rally will have a format very similar to those of the past. The Rally will be
opened at the Meet and Greet Party at the Novotel Glen Waverley on Friday evening. On Saturday morning a cavalcade of d'Elegance and d'Etat entrants will lead the way to Jells Park for our
Concours and Display Day. On Saturday night we will have a night of fun with music and dancing
at the clubrooms. Sunday morning will see our potential sporting heroes make their way to Sandown Racetrack for an enviable day on the track. A great day for entrants and spectators alike.
There will also be a choice of alternative events for those not wanting to go to Sandown for the
sporting event on Sunday .
The Presentation Dinner is to be held at Southern Golf Club Keysborough on Sunday evening. Monday morning will come all too soon as we gather for brunch at the club rooms and to
say goodbye. We will also wave off the Post Rally Tour participants as they head off to let their
Jaguars "Prowl the Peninsula".
Come and celebrate the Jaguar marque with like-minded enthusiasts. Help us to put "Our Marque
on Melbourne" in Victoria at Easter 2014. I look forward to meeting you there.

2014 NATIONAL RALLY TOUR
P
resident Ian Hissey has as usual put together a fascinating tour to get Club members to
Melbourne for the 2014 National Rally at Easter, and back to Newcastle. He‘s called it
the Coastal Views to Outback Terrain Tour—and with good reason. It covers the two
extremes and everything in between. See the map on Page 40.
The outward journey heads to Melbourne down the NSW coast and around the corner into Victoria, stopping overnight at:





Nowra (visiting the HARS Museum)
Bermagui
Bairnsdale
Port Albert and
Cowes (looking at fairy penguins)
On arrival in Melbourne there will be a visit to the Mike Roddy workshop and sightseeing on the
Friday prior to the Rally itself on Saturday and Sunday.
After the Rally, we set course back to Newcastle the long way—via:








Apollo Bay
Warnambool
Horsham
Mildura
Broken Hill (3 nights, sightseeing Silverton and Menindee Lakes)
White Cliffs (2 nights and sightseeing)
Cobar
Gilgandra
These Club trips are always greatly enjoyed and remembered by those who undertake them, and
a lot of good fun and camaraderie is assured.
Anyone interested in joining the Tour is urged to contact President Ian Hissey without delay.
Registration for the Rally itself closes on 28 February 2014; however the discounted cost rates
applicable to various Rally activities finishes on 31st January. Go to:

A string walks into a bar with a few
friends and orders a beer. The bartender says, "I'm sorry, but we don't
serve strings here."
The string goes back to his table. He
ties himself in a loop and messes up
the top of his hair. He walks back up
to the bar and orders a beer.
The bartender squints at him and
says, "Hey, aren't you a string?" The
string says, "Nope, I'm a frayed knot."
Two boys were walking home from
Sunday school after hearing a
strong preaching on the devil. One
said to the other, 'What do you
think about all this Satan stuff?'
The other boy replied, 'Well, you
know how Santa Claus turned out.
It's probably just your Dad.'
Paddy took two old stuffed dogs to the 'Antiques Roadshow'.
"Ooh!" said the presenter, "This is a very rare set, produced by the celebrated Johns Brothers taxidermists
who operated in London at the turn of last century. Do
you have any idea what they would fetch if they were in
good condition?"
"...Sticks?" Paddy replied.
Mothers In History :
Michelangelo's Mother: Can't you
paint on walls like other children? Do
you have any idea how hard it is to
get that stuff off the ceiling?
Mona Lisa's Mother: After all that
money your father and I spent on
braces, that's the biggest smile you
can give us?
Mary's Mother: I'm not upset that
your lamb followed you to school, but I
would like to know how it got a better
grade than you.
Columbus's Mother: I don't care
what you've discovered, you still could
have written.
Thomas Edison's Mother: Of course
I'm proud that you invented the electric light bulb. Now turn it off and go to
sleep.
