important that you respond to the
consultation on the Neighbourhood Plan
(see page 2).
We need to monitor the A120
improvements through Standon. The
draft Neighbourhood Plan says the
parish council will try to ensure there is
consultation about such proposals, but
we may have to lobby for the changes
that improve our quality of life, rather
than just the flow of traffic. The main
concerns expressed previously to
STANDonA120 were traffic speed ,
resulting in excessive noise, severance
of the community, discouragement of
cycling and even of walking where the
pavements are narrow, and air pollution.
All these are factors acknowledged as
relevant in government guidelines.
I believe that the only way to alleviate
these problems is to revert to the
STANDonA120 proposal for average
speed cameras. We came close to getting
agreement on this proposal in 2008,
when a meeting set up by Sir Oliver
Heald MP found that there were no
technical difficulties with the proposal,
but that it was contrary to
Hertfordshire’s policy on speed cameras
and that it was very expensive.
At that time, David Beatty was our
county councillor and he undertook to
try to get the policy changed, but he
became ill and then gave up his seat.
Without his support, we were unable to
get the policy change, which requires
four people to be killed or seriously
injured before cameras are considered.
I shall try to keep residents along and
close to the road informed. Meanwhile, I
should be pleased to have comments,
preferably by email to
[email protected] or by
telephone to 821698.
When STANDonA120 stopped there
was £206 in the bank, this has been
passed to the parish council for use by
the Neighbourhood Plan steering group.

Have you noticed the
increase in aircraft flying
low over our villages?
Over several months I have telephoned
the Stansted Noise Line to report
aeroplanes for flying low and loud. This
should not be happening, aircraft should
be flying on the outskirts of the villages
of Standon and Puckeridge only.
The Noise Line response was that this
was within the guidelines which I find
extremely worrying. I have been in
contact with Stop Stansted Expansion
and our Parish Council who forwarded
my concerns onto Councillor Graham
McAndrew who forwarded it to Stansted
Airport Environment Committee.
However, on 23 October, I was walking
the dog between 6-6.30pm and counted
10 Aircraft flying overhead proving that
the amount of aircraft is on the increase.
Several years ago I was a Parish
Councillor and managed to get a monitor
in the village when strangely enough,
aircraft disappeared.!!! When I
challenged this, I was told by one of
County Councillors that the wind had
changed!!! So the problem disappeared
If you are worried about these increases

New research finds that
Scouts & Guides have
better mental health
A new study has found a strong link
between participating in Scouting and
Guiding as a young person, and having
significantly better mental health.
The data, from almost 10,000
individuals, came from the National
Child Development Study a lifelong UK
-wide study of people born in November
1958. 28% had been members of
Scouting or Guiding as young people.
The major finding of the study was that,
at the age of 50, this group were around
15% less likely to suffer from mood
disorders (including depression and
anxiety) than adults who had not been
members of Scouting or Guiding.
Despite it having been many decades
since the participants had been
members, there was a clear and strong
mental health protective effect. This was
present even when the researchers
accounted for childhood risk factors,
including mental illness being generally
more prevalent in families from low
socio-economic backgrounds.
‘It is quite startling that this benefit is
found in people so many years after they
have attended Scouts or Guides,’ said
lead researcher Professor Chris Dibben.
‘We expect the same principles would
apply to the Scouts and Guides of today,
and so, given the high costs of mental ill
health to individuals and society, a focus
on voluntary youth programmes such as
Scouting or Guiding might be very
sensible,’ he continued.
The authors suggest that the findings
represent the benefits of learning ‘soft’
skills through Scouting and Guiding,
including teamwork and self-reliance,
coupled with frequently being outdoors
in natural environments. Scouting and
Guiding teaches young people skills for
life, and now there is evidence that these
skills can have a lifelong positive
impact on one of the most important
indicators of our health and wellbeing.
The study was conducted by researchers
at the universities of Edinburgh and
Glasgow, and has been published in
the Journal of Epidemiology and
Community Health.

Friends of St Mary’s,
Braughing (FOSM)
We recently held two very successful
events. The exciting WW1 drama,
‘Seeing it Through’, held in conjunction
with Braughing Local History Society,
drew an audience of over 100 into the
church and raised £750. ‘Apple Teas’
was exceptionally busy and the teas
alone raised over £320. Selling our own
locally produced Apple Juice, Smoked
Cheddar Cheese, Chutney, Apple Sauce
and Christmas Cards added further to
the day’s takings. We are also very
grateful to Jill Cook who kindly donated
half the profit from the recent Jazz
Night in memory of David Williamson.
The Trustees of the St Mary’s Church
Braughing Restoration Trust would like
to thank the FOSM Fundraising Team,
Braughing Local History Society and

the Jazz Night such a great success.
Thanks also to everyone who came

large trees on the boundary with Knights
Court require attention. Three further
trees – two limes and a Scots pine have
died and need felling. In the past this
work would have been undertaken by the
Friends of Standon Churchyard
themselves but the nature and extent of
the current work (and the increasing age
of the volunteers!) makes it prudent to
seek professional help. We expect to
complete the tree work this winter.
Hedges
Some years ago the Friends planted a
mixed hedge along the boundary
between the almshouse meadow and the
almshouses. It has grown faster than we
have been able to trim it and has now
reached the point where it badly needs
laying. We hope to do this ourselves but
with some professional guidance.
Levelling
The flat upper part of the almshouse
meadow (where all new graves are sited)
is full - or almost so – and the next level
needs to be prepared. This will require
work with a digger, removal of weeds
and re-sowing with grass. The
mechanical work will necessitate some
external help – we have a benevolent
‘outsider’ in mind but the Friends can
probably undertake the rest themselves.
PS News December 2016
Wall
Clearance of undergrowth and ivy by the
Friends has revealed that the wall next to
Standon House, is in need of attention.
The wall itself is of flint topped with
brickwork and the work will involve
skills beyond those of the volunteers.
The Common Interest
This article is not intended as a plea for
funds – far from it. Nor is it in any direct
sense a call for more volunteers –
although in recent months a small
number of family members of those who
have recently been buried in the
Churchyard have become active in its
maintenance - and not just in their
family’s grave. Rather, it is intended to
emphasise that those who tend graves
and the volunteers who do their best to
look after the Churchyard have a
common interest. In part it can be
expressed in blunt terms: ‘You can
expect us to improve and beautify the
whole Churchyard and, in return, we can
expect you who tend graves to do so in a
way which respects the sanctity of the
ground and complies with the
Regulations.’ But it’s more than that.
All of us, whatever our standpoint, can
surely agree that the churchyard should
be ‘a place of dignity and calm, suitable
for peaceful contemplation, full of
email: [email protected]
Page 11
natural flowers and filled with birdsong,
in harmony with its natural
surroundings, emphasising the presence
of life alongside death.’ We, for our part,
have been much encouraged by the
subtle but significant changes to many of
the graves which are bringing the
churchyard steadily into greater
compliance with the requirements of the
Diocesan Regulations.

So far, business is good!
Not to be left out, Year 7 pupils have

Caution - Deer Crossing
Hertfordshire County Council is
asking drivers to be extra vigilant on
the roads this autumn.
At this time of year the male fallow deer
is unpredictable and can travel several
miles a day in search of a mate, crossing
roads in the process. The most common
time for the male deer to roam is at dawn
and dusk, which in late September and
October coincides with the rush-hours.
Although deer are present in residential
areas it is where major roads pass near
wooded areas, with traffic moving at
high speeds, that there is a particular risk
of collisions with crossing animals.
Some basic safety tips which might
help you to avoid collisions with
deer:
 Reduce your speed in high risk areas
such as wooded areas close to major
roads.
 Use your headlights on full beam,
when safe to do so.
 Be aware that more deer may cross
after the first one you see.
 Brake firmly when you notice a deer in
or near your path. Don't over-swerve
to avoid hitting it as you may cause a
more serious collision.

being a small luxury, can provide an
energy boost.
People do not necessarily have the
means to cook food so items (such as
instant mash or pot meals) which do not
need to be cooked or can be prepared
with boiling water are useful. If people
have to make a choice between feeding
the children or providing them with new
toothbrushes and toothpaste, food
always takes precedence, so toiletries
such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap,
toilet rolls, sanitary products, shaving
foam, razors would be useful. Nappies
and baby food are always needed (but
not baby milk, please!) People do have
pets (how often have you seen a
homeless person with a dog?) so pet
food could be included.
We will be making this appeal a
‘prayerful’ event and ask that you pray
for the eventual recipients as you put
each item in the box or bag. We will
have reception points at the back of all
three of our churches and you can leave
your donations there each week.
If you are not a member of the church
but would like to join in, the churches
are open during daylight hours every day
and you can leave contributions at any

The lads had a rather confusing first
experience of battle, marching up and
down the front line the night before the
Battle of Loos. Once battle had
commenced, they followed their C.O.,
going to support another brigade, when
the C.O. was wounded. Contact was lost
with the battalions to their front, so they
stayed put, enduring constant shelling,
and were later withdrawn without
having reached the front or firing their
weapons.
Later, Clarry, Bert, Horace and their
Battalion spent many months in the
trenches north east of Ypres. In a New
Year’s Eve letter home, Clarry described
an uncomfortable Christmas Day
carrying rations back and forth between
a ruined village and frontline trenches,
whilst eating bread and butter for his
own meals, tea without milk, and having
a spot of jam with his bread for dinner.
He remarks on being upset because a
friend called ‘Punch’ had been killed a
few days earlier. ‘Punch’ was in fact
Private 15306 Francis W Oakley who
was another of the local lads that had
enlisted the same day.
Until April 1916 the men spent a quiet if
uncomfortable time in the trenches, and
survived a German raid on 19 April
which caused about 200 casualties in the
hand to hand fighting in the dark.
Following this incident they settled back

campaign in September. It is at this
point that the brothers parted company.
Clarry and Horace experienced some of
the bloodiest fighting the Battalion
endured in the war, but Bert, suffering
from a fever, was removed from the
lines in August, so saving him from the
carnage of the Somme. While Bert was
being treated in hospital in both France
and England, his brother, and brothers in
arms were training for another stage of
the Somme offensive.
On 15 September the battle of FlersCourcelette opened, Tanks, being used
for the first time, got bogged down, and
the British artillery fell short, resulting
in the German wire being uncut along
their portion of the line. The attempt to
get through the wire under heavy
machine gun fire resulted in great loss of
life, following which the Battalion was
rotated back out of battle to regroup.
On 25 September 1916 the 8th Battalion
were again in action at the Battle of
Morval, which saw Clarry, Horace and
the 8th Battalion in reserve after
sustaining huge casualties the week
before. Although in reserve they
provided carrying parties for those in the
front line and suffered from shelling.
Almost 30 were killed, including Horace
and Clarry, and twice as many wounded.
An article in a local paper dated 11
November 1916 mentioned both Horace
and Clarry. It stated:

Nine myths about science
education in early years
education
and start to hone their skills – skills that
will be useful in all walks of life whether
or not you end up becoming the next
Stephen Hawking – from an early age.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but
STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Maths) is the key to
unlocking our future success as a nation
– and it should be educators’ mission to
nurture the next generation of scientists,
developers, engineers, medics, etc. who
can lead the way. The STEM learning
journey can start in the early years –
indeed, the earlier we engage our
children with these fundamentals and
break down the barriers associated with
the perception of science, thus turning it
into a subject that children are excited
about and not fearful of, the better.
Not all scientists wear lab coats and not
all science is done in a lab. Whilst it’s
true a lot of scientific work is undertaken
in a laboratory environment, teaching
science in the early years can be done
anywhere. Finding the magic in
everyday items, using kitchen chemistry,
forest school, engineering with Lego
(other branded building blocks are also
available) – the options are limitless.
Exploring science as part of the EYFS
will help children become familiar with
concepts that will lead to faster
progression when they go on to school –
but don’t underestimate what your preschoolers are capable of, and don’t
impose your own limits on them. Expose
them to as much as possible and they
will surprise you!
2. STEM has to be done in a lab
Science is so broad; it encompasses
everything; it truly is ‘understanding the
world’, or at least trying to! The world is
not confined to a lab, so how therefore
can you confine science to one?
3. Three-year-olds don’t have the
attention span...
You’re right, three-year-olds don’t have
the attention span for a traditional
classroom setting – that’s why we need
to rethink our vision of science
education. Why not turn
experimentation or the illustration of an
idea or scientific concept into a physical

on the parachute, this signifies white
light. The number of balls you use is
completely up to you – the more, the
better in my opinion! At the other side
of the room lay out 6 containers (again
1 for each colour of the rainbow) –
these will be used to collect the balls
later. Get the children to take hold of
the parachute, make a wave (as light is
a wave) and send the balls soaring,
splitting the white light into all the
colours of the rainbow. The balls will
go flying and the children will be in
hysterics! Now get the children to
collect up all the balls and place them
into the containers provided – one
colour per container. Once all the balls
have been collected, and the room is
once again tidy, get the children to
place the containers in the correct order
of the visible spectrum. For large
classes, you could set up multiple
rainbow containers, promoting
teamwork and a little healthy
competition. You could time the
children to see how quickly they can
complete the task and maybe even give
out a sticker (or 3!).
4. Science is boring
Is finding out about new things, how
things work and why things occur
boring? No, so let’s re-think. It’s the
way science has been taught in the past
that was boring, not science itself.
Would you have found it boring if
you’d played games, made things glow,
made things pop, fizz and bang? All are
achievable in an early years settings – it
just takes a bit of creative thinking.

5. You need specialist equipment
In some instances, yes – and we don’t all
have a Van der Graff generator in our
living room, I’ll admit. But there is so
much you can do with everyday
materials – it just takes a bit of
creativity! Why not turn the visible
spectrum into a real life rainbow? Take
a length of ribbon (about 2m should do
it) – 1 for each colour of the rainbow.
Have the children pair up and sit down
in 2 parallel lines facing one another.
Give each pair a different piece of
coloured ribbon – making sure you
follow the correct order of the spectrum
- Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue &
Violet (again, don’t worry about
indigo!). Now, white light is a mixture
of all the colours of the rainbow and
light is a wave. All the colours travel at
different speeds, that’s how we can split
them into the visible spectrum. Red is
the slowest wave, so get the reds to set
the wave speed by moving the ribbon
up & down to create a slow wave. Then
get the Oranges to move their ribbon –
a little quicker, then the yellows –
quicker still (you get the idea!). Until
we get to violet – the quickest wave.
You’ve now made your very own
rainbow!

7. Girls won’t enjoy it as much as
boys
If my research has shown me anything,
this is utter rubbish. I have equal ratios
of boys to girls in all of my Lab Tots
classes and I see no gender divide.
Exposing all children to science at this
age breaks down potential gender
stereotypes, before they have even been Lab Tots Christmas Special with

8. You need all the answers at my
fingertips
Whilst it’s scary if you’re asked a
question you can’t answer, most of
science is questioning the unknown.
There’s no need to feel that you need to
know the answer to everything. Surely
one of the biggest things we can teach
our children is how to go about finding
out the answer.
If you don’t know, find out and engage
the children in the process. Some of
life’s biggest questions still lie
unanswered – this next generation could
be the key to unlocking them.
